used to have a crm250 as a little road warrior.
Someone broke into my garage (two security doors in an apartment complex) and stole it.

I still got a xr200 but that is just no fun in comparison.

Garth - Partial Credit

Ram - No

CaptainColen - Nice I don't mind the old CRM's no matter how butt ugly they were. Make a nice weekend toy. XR200's are awesome, can't kill them!

I rode a CRF250X to victory at the pacific park championships of 2008.

Thinking of an old XR as a daily/bush basher when I move up the mountain, until then... I'll snake a ride of yours and marco's

too true; the amount of times i have dropped/bogged/flipped etc this bike is ridiculous. Aside from several clutch/brake levers, i have never had a problem with it - ive had it for about 6 years as a farm bash around, ridden regularly.
I must admit pretty much everything is bent well out of shape and the power curve is shaped like a pear but i wouldn't call it anywhere near dead.

Whats the deal with the new XR's? little inline twins /w water cooling?(shit to break)...
They just don't make em like they used to!

No such thing as XR's anymore.

New offroad/registerable lineup is the CRFX range.

250 or 450 Singles, Water Cooled.

Make probably double the power and half the weight

what do you guys think would make a good first bike? i could only spend around 4k or so, and it will be dropped(read stacked) alot! whats bullet and idiot proof?
it needs to be able to take 2 people up pretty much any incline i point it at so i would need like a 250 or something i think.. any ideas?

brasher
21-10-08, 09:59 AM
125 2 stroke is the best bet for a first bike, cheap and easy to maintain, will teach you good throttle control/clutch skills, very light and nimble.

Any jap bike made within the last 5 years will prove reliable and will still be fun when your skills improve.

Current gen 250cc 4 strokes require a fair amount of maintenance which can put off a lot of newcomers.

SUROK
21-10-08, 10:40 AM
yeah but a 125 cant take 2 people with any sort of speed.

brasher
21-10-08, 10:42 AM
Yeah... what would I know

SUROK
21-10-08, 10:50 AM
well im just saying that the 175 i was riding was pretty gutless going up hills. and it didnt make it up one hill with 2 people on it. so i would want more power than that. but i guess it could have been out of tune? or a crappy 175? yamaha DT 175 was the bike
EDIT: actually it was probably WAYY out of tune..

brasher
21-10-08, 10:55 AM
dude, thats a farm bike....

It's like comparing apples to oranges, a 125cc mx bike will take you, ya mum and a llama up a cliff-face with enought throttle.

SUROK
21-10-08, 07:23 PM
so whats a good 125cc ? can u put pegs on the back of any bike?

benxxx
21-10-08, 10:18 PM
YZ, CR, RM, KX... take your pick, I doubt any of those have pegs, I'm also not sure if the sub frame could handle it.

Why do you want rear pegs on an MX bike ?

SUROK
21-10-08, 10:33 PM
cos i would want to be able to take my gf with me on adventures.
i dont intend to race it at all. i need more of a trail bike or something. so the ability to take a passenger is essential

Oh dear

Only "offroad" bike I can think of that comes with pillion pegs off the factory floor is the DRZ400 "S" but it's way out of your budget.

Just tell her to get on the back and hang on... to be honest it's plain dangerous to ride off road with someone on the back, pretty irresponsible to be honest. The thing about riding dirtbikes is expect to come off every time you ride, so I don't think your girlfriend will be too impressed when she is covered in leaking fuel and has pebbles 1cm deep in her skin.

Went up to my mates farm just south of Port Macquarie over the Weekend, got a bit of riding on the camera, sorry it's just a lot of the same corner and some very average video/editing lol

I'm on the Yellow DRZ.

Does a DR650SE count?

Dirt / road trails are where its at.

Haha more power than you really need off road but it translates to the ability to go absolutely anywhere.

I'm a farm boy, got my first motorbike when I was 7.

Hi guys, thought some of you might enjoy this video of some of my mates who are into their dirt bikes ...

This video with the dirt bikes at Mt Cunstable is particularly good viewing - there's a great hillclimb section about 3 minutes into this video and some stuff that was so steep they had use ropes at about 8:00 minutes
