OK... I know I've bashed the Honda Jazz a billion times before. I'm here to contradict myself (hey that's a good thing right?!).

After living with it for a couple of days I can already see why people might love this little van/car thing. I even think it looks nice (I'm borrowing the VTiS). The new kit is definitely nicer than the old one.

It's an auto, latest model. I played with the 7 speed paddle shift for about 5 minutes. Works faster than Christinas tiptronic shift/paddles in her MX-5 and also holds "gears" better. It also has down gears on one side (left paddle) and up gears on right which makes much better sense than any of the rest (same as Alfa Romeo, Ferarri etc). Still silly and best left in auto mode.

"D" is pretty boring, "S" is sporty and there's definitely a difference in acceleration off the lights in "S" mode rather than leaving it in "D".

The steering is so light, perhaps the lightest steering I've ever felt in any car. Feels a little strange on fast-ish tight corners, say a roundabout, as you have to turn the wheel quite a lot to get the car to turn... but the wheel spins back very fast when you let go of it (unlike say Christina's MX-5 which forces you to turn it back yourself).

You can feel the constantly variable auto when you come across a big hill. Instead of having to put heaps more pressure on the accelerator to go up it, you can feel it trying to apply more power to keep the same speed. All in all a lot smoother than old skool jerky automatics that's for sure.

It's super easy to stay at 60km's/hr. I found this hard in the EVO (LOL!). IE: This car will keep you (well, me!) out of trouble.

Amazingly it steers/corners damn well on a twisty bit of road. I am quite surprised. Also can handle being chucked into a sharp corner with ease.

General Conclusion: Quiet, easy, comfortable, handy and... easy (oh I said that already). Easy to park (does amazingly sharp turns at parking speeds).

All of a sudden everyone's cutting me off and I feel like I should be in the left lane, but then they're all braking in the corners and I'm just throwing the little Jazz in there and catching up as well as changing lanes into gaps in traffic very easily as I have great vision in and out of the car (hey it's also got great brakes!).

Love the instruments/speedo, it's so clear and lit up day and night. Stereo's not bad either, like the big buttons and stuff... feels like a Mac rather than a PC.

All in all, OK, it might cause more accidents by having people fall asleep at the wheel (as the car is so easy to drive, read: boring) but it's a great car for the masses. I could definitely live with one... for a while at least! :)

i've been in a normal jazz and it was horrible...the cvt makes the car feel really sluggish and it sounds like a clutch slipping while the car isnt going anywhere even if you floor it lolz.

I tried a a-calss merc as well and its sorta the same feeling except the honda lets you shift when you want whereas the merc has to think about it and sometimes wont let you if it thinks its not a good idea.

Ah well I guess they are good for going from A to B (in a very boring manner).

First of all, isn't that Honda's dropping the CVT from the Jazz range? Read a post on ozhonda on this. Honda had too much issues with CVT. And, didn't you last time mentioned that the handling of the jazz is scarely when you do the test drive??

No doubt Jazz is one of the best among the small car range, but at least get a manual ;)

Yeah the initial test drive was for my sister and it was in a GL... A 1.3engine I think. Lowest of the range. This car feels a lot better than that one we tested. Maybe the suspension set-up is different on this 06 model?

I'm still really unsure about Automatic Transmissions in general. They sure make you feel sleepy on a long-ish drive.

well i have lived with one for the last 2.5 years (read: my missus ride) and it's not too bad.

i never use the manual mode on the CVT becos i dun see the point of it. it's not a sports car and i prefer to keep the fuel consumption as low as possible (this is the what they're designed for).

it's the right size for us and performance is adequate so we're happy with it.

but i echo Justin's comment - it's BORING....

Doghouse for you Justin....for at least 10 min.

I love the jazz. Everyting about it. We bought one. The 1.5 auto with the gearchange flaps but then realised its just a tad too small & upgraded to the Civic VI. which is a fair amount more roomy for a family. My sister in law bought the Jazz the same day we did. I drive hers occasionally. It more fun to drive than our Civic......especaially in Manual mode. The seats fold flat if you need move things. It goes harder than the civic VI 1.7 because its a lot lighter. I never drove the 1.3 version so i can't compare.
The jazz is no performance car. its a workhorse. In the sense that it gets you from place A-B. Most of us here get our cars to get from A-B via Z.

I think the Jazz is really what the Civic used to be in the 70's or even still in the late 80's. The civic to me seems more of a medium size car than a compact city run about now days.

The jazz is a fantastic car for its intended purpose. Its defenatly no sports car.

Boring going slow... YES! what car isn't when you driving the speed limit.

I found the tranny on the Jazz is quite responsive on the auto model. As some one had already compared to the A-class merc, i'll compare too (I feel they are similar cars)... hmmmmm... I'd have to say no chance. The A-class merc is a A-class merc. A cheap sounding name for a cheap car. Although I prefer the tiptronic shift to be by the gear stick rather than the paddles. So well up to merc for that IMO.

Justin have you driven the New civic? When I was looking for my sister... it was a choice between Civic or Jazz (both 06 models). Just for comparison... I much prefered the Jazz. Even though we ended up with a civic. It felt lighter into corners, interior had really good apples. I was like a 16 year old again on my Learners. Prices of vti-s Jazz and the base model civic are similar. The Civic feels wayyyyyy more torquey, and the suspension, I feel is set up a little better. Anyone notice strong Under steer with the Jazz?

Whoa.. reading back on my coments, contridicted everywhere... all i'm trying to say is, the Jazz is an awsome car overall... smooth, easy, responsive, and damn happy! The Civic is also cool... but i'd pick the Jazz because of the vibes, and driver friendly feel! :)
