watanabes please! :D

Would love to have gunmetal Watanabes if they weren't so expensive to begin with :-o
The car came with the current set of wheels when I bought it and they aren't too bad looking
I am contemplating the Panasport Prorally wheels though. Similar to Watanabes, but they are more sculpted somewhat ... as opposed to Watanabes sausage like profile

This is what the Panasports look like

Watanabes are awesome, but I don't want to end up looking all that similar to the other MX5s out there

Macey, I just photochop Philip Lee's (another Miata owner from Brisbane) wheels onto my existing car's pic :D
I have 16s on my Miata at the moment and I think they look pretty proportional to the car (not too big or too small)

Cheers, mate. The old ones are OK IMHO
I've grown to like them too somewhat, they make the MX5 look a bit more luxurious and grown up
The Panasports make them look a like a Hot Wheels JDM Street special, but I like it
Looks race-y to me ...

Hi "twin brother" :D

I sourced the wheels from Sunny in the end. He's a top bloke for sure, nice guy.
I got the offset figure from his email, but I think they are exactly carbon copy of yours.

I really love the new wheels, Philip. And they transform the car's handling too.

yeah sunny is a top bloke. i got most of my jdm stuff from him including the car and wheels.

initially i was going to get them painted in silver (from pink!?!) but the shop "stuffed up" and delivered them in gun metal with a bit of blue pearl. i thought it was hot so didn't complain.

yo justin, what was this controversey regarding your car?
Some members on the MX-5 forums (not sure if they're still there or not) like to engage in price-bashing when a car goes up for sale, so of course there was plenty of that when Justin first advertised his car for $25k last year

Thanks for the comments, mate.
Wish I could do more for the car in the future, but my age is catching to my senses (i.e. sensibility).

I am indeed happy with the car and its condition, let's hope I can keep it that way for years to come.
I'll probably swap back the black OE radio to replace the aftermarket Kenwood one in the car, looks much more retro.
Contemplating the BD rollbar and NB seats like yours too, Stan.
I am the only NA without a BD rollbar there, what's going on? :D

The tyre shine is just for the meet, usually the tyres are just scrubbed clean during wash.

hmmmm those sparco roadster might be a tight fit

It'll probably be a tight fit for the car and an even tighter fit for me .... hahaha
Sat in deez's Sparco Ultra and that is pretty tight already

Do you have any other recommendations, Kelv?
I am looking for something that doesn't have aggresive side bolsters so that I can get in and out of the car easily (hence the roadster choice)

Andy Wana
06-08-07, 12:24 PM
And it doesn't have to be Sparco in particular ...
I prefer something with leather on the sides so that it won't wear out too quickly

Babalouie
06-08-07, 12:38 PM
I found that with the top up, it was really hard to get in and out cos of the lap bolsters on racing buckets, and cos of the ribcage bolsters, you'd have to squeeze in between the steering wheel and the seat to get in (even after you slid the seat all the way back).

So IMHO I reckon for us "larger framed" ppl :) we need to get recliners not racing seats :D

well kev I manage to squeezed my fat ass in the sparco sprint lol
Andy, the mx5 been bless with a narrow cockpit and only a few bucket seats fits our mx5s..... I had no problems with my sparco sprint but i couldn't fit my sparco evo 2 bucket because the shoulder wing bolsters are too wide. From memory it had to be within 21 inches wide

The car's got Bilsteins as standard, so it'll suffice for the time being
Will definitely look into coilovers (Bilstein PSS9s maybe) in the near future
Car needs to be slammed another 1 - 2 inch

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you see it) marriage is next, other mods will have to wait
And gotta save up for all those parts that I've highlighted in my Road&Ster mag when I go to Japan later this year

Mr Happ

JP is a good place to get coilovers, as you will have seen in r&s. Just buy as much as you can and head down to the post office and send home with EMS.

Absolutely a steal at $250 NZD

Nothing much to be honest. The only must-do is the usual oil and filter change.

Nice-to-dos would include:
- check the ignition timing,
- bleed brake fluid + re-grease caliper pins
- tap out air filter and clean if it's a K&N type
- change fuel filter if it wasn't done at 100k (bit of a bugger of a job)
- oil flush if your lifters are ticking a lot
- check for leaks and replace CAS seal if leaking
- check turret boot & tunnel boot for splits
- change g/b and diff oil if you don't know when it was done last
- renew muffler bearings and refill headlight fluid :)

And that's it really. If you feel like DIY you can come over to the Garage Mahal and I can "supervise" you :D

Just want to gauge interest here before I make a decision this evening about keeping it
I'm thinking of going sensible and keep a small hatch for my daily car instead (I know, it's sad)
I will consider a trade (and money your way) for an auto 2006-2007 Honda Jazz VTi/ VTiS with low kms and in good nick

I am thinking of letting it go for around $15,900 ono
Once I get the details of the car up this evening, you'll see a genuinely great car going at a great price for quick sale
I still have ALL my original parts when I bought the car and it will be included in the sale

Why is your car at Mania?

Long story...sigh. My radiator decided it was time to shit itself, and it had leaked all of its coolant without me even noticing. Main reason would be that it was at night, and leaving my mate's house it was dark and I couldn't see anything. it was when I got home and crawling up the driveway that the car suddenly stalled and died, that's when I knew what had happened.

Didn't seem like a major issue I thought, and I left the hood open overnight so the bay can cool down slowly. Filled it back up and then took it to Mania, got a new Cooling Pro radiator and all was sweet. I had an exhaust installed the week after and it was only then that the car started to blow heavy smoke as well as smelling like crap. The diagnosis right now seems to be that the oil/piston rings have gone and its burning oil as if they were cheap as cartons of milk.

Not happy Jan.

Babalouie
15-10-07, 02:20 PM
Ouch...so is a second hand motor going in?

Ahh....don't feel so bad. I found out that my engine was stuffed when I had headwork done. The head was shaved for more compression and fully reco'd so that the valves were now sealing perfectly.

After reinstallation, the piston rings now became the weak link and it started to drink about half a litre of oil a week :( It later turned out that the workshop that did the headwork knew that there was something wrong with the engine anyway but decided to turn a blind eye and put the head back anyway. So in the end I ended up rebuilding the engine twice :D The head had to come back off again, and this time the whole engine came out with it too for a proper rebuild (at a different workshop obviously).

These things happen...

deez
15-10-07, 02:41 PM
The guys at Mania have suggested to keep the current engine as it doesnt look to be too bad, so that's what's going to happen. I figured it would be better to keep it despite what happened as there is relatively low kays on it and a major service has already been done. Considering the history of 2nd hand motors are pretty much unknown as well, that kinda helped with my decision :) Of course it would be much nicer to shove a 1.8 in there, but then I thought if I go that route I'll have to take my headers out again and sell them off to get 1.8 ones and it just adds more drama and $$$ :P the extra oomph would DEFINITELY be nice though as the 1.6 is and always will be asthmatic below 4000 rpm without some internal work. But I really enjoy the rush the car gives as the revs kick in from 4000rpm, the intake roars, and the little motor screams to redline so quickly its fun to just watch the tacho :) My own Vtec moments without the actual Vtec lol

Damn those rebuilds must have been expensive eh :( I always have this struggle of selling/keeping my car, especially when I start to think if I have a new or newish car to work from, all the money could be spent on mods. Instead, probably half the time I'm getting stuff fixed here and there :P

But, old cars are just awesome to keep :) I just love em....much more character and much more feel.

Babalouie
15-10-07, 02:45 PM
So....Mania is re-ringing your pistons or replacing the pistons? Are they honing the bores?

Since the engine is out, it's a good idea to get it honed by a machine shop...once I rebuilt a motor by just replacing the rings, without honing the bores professionally and the compression figures afterwards were not that great.

deez
15-10-07, 03:01 PM
Hmm....I'm not exactly sure what they are doing with it actually. Think they're just re-ringing it.

I have no idea about bores lol....what happens when you hone the bores, and what happens if you don't? What do you mean by the compression figures not being great? Sorry I'm a complete noob haha

Andy Wana
15-10-07, 03:27 PM

(sorry to whore up andy's thread!) :D

But the pistons slide up and down inside the engine, yes? The cylinders that the pistons run in are called...the cylinders, or bores. Now if you have bad ring seal, the other half of the equation is possibly the bores.

In theory the rings should be a softer material than the bores, but in a thorough engine rebuild it's a good idea to get the bores honed to renew the surface. To do this, the best way is to put the block in a "Sunnen" honing machine, which machines the bores to make the surface smooth again for a good seal for the new rings. If the bores are really bad (eg got grooves or scratches in it), the machine will have to take off a fair bit of material, and so you will need to get oversized rings or pistons to fill the (now bigger) bores. The other thing that a honing machine does is leave a very fine cross-hatched pattern which is the best surface for good ring seal and break in.

The alternative is a hand-honing tool that you attach to a drill but that is teh dodge IMHO.

You see, the old bores will have worn-in with a micro-wear pattern that will suit the shape of the old rings, which is from the original breakin period plus years of driving and wear.

If you don't hone the bores, the new rings will have to break-in to match that exact micro pattern on the bores to get a good seal, and if the rings are a soft material they may eventually get a good seal after say 10,000kms of driving.

But often the only way to guarantee a good seal is to hone the bores so that you have fresh surfaces on both sides. Then you have basically the same ring to bore position as when the engine was brand new, and (depending on your valve seat wear) you will have the same compression as a new motor. Not honing the bores may mean that you get only "half-worn" compression, which is a bit of a shame since everything is out and dismantled anyway.

Luce will drink about 60L of 98 octane for every 270kms.

IIRC my DC2R wasn't expensive to service, it's just oil changes until you get to 40,000kms....but any new car service will always cost a few hundred clams even tho it's just a oil change :D
