1989 Mazda RX7 FC3S
Engine rebuilt with unknown internals
HKS T04R
HKS Exhaust Manifold
HKS 50mm wastegate
HKS Front Mount Intercooler
Apex'i AP Engineering Power FC
Blitz Dual SBC-R
Stupid big fuel injectors
Fuel pump that sounds like WWII fighter plane
6 point roll-cage
OS Giken twin plate clutch
Mazdaspeed 1.5 way LSD
Tein HR coilovers (They let the rest of the car down)
Some kind of large 2 piece front rotors with FD calipers. Very similar to SP RX7 setup
17x9 +17 Buddy Club wheels with 215/40/17 and 235/45/17 rubber (getting swapped in the next few weeks for Desmond Regamasters)
Defi BF Boost, Oil Temp and Water Temp gauges
Recaro SR3 drivers seat
Bling Pioneer double DIN headunit from Japan

Currently off the road due to a number of "cosmetic" issues, as well as some mechanical stuff. Should be fixed up by mid year.

1990 BNR32 GT-R
R33 N1 Engine
Tomei 1.2mm Metal head gasket
Tomei Type-B Poncams - 9.15mm lift
Tomei adjustable cam gears
Justjap Sump baffles
Tomei Expreme exhaust manifolds
Tomei dump pipes
Garrett GT2860R-5 turbochargers
OS Giken twin plate clutch
Apexi Power FC
Big front pipes
Even bigger cat back exhaust
BBS LM 17x9 +20 wheels with glorious Federal rubber
Recaro SR3 seats
Ohlins coilovers
Trust Intercooler
HKS remote oil filter kit and some kind of oil cooler which seems to work ok.

Car is almost back on the road. Still need Nismo AFM's, Nismo fuel pump and Sard 700cc injectors. Then looking at getting a set of Tein Monoflex shocks and some Ikeya Formula arms, and finally some R33 Brembos. Probably going to lock the HICAS as well when I get round to it. Also thinking about pulling out ABS unit, cos it leaks like an old tap.

Car is back at home now. Missing some panels, and some are bent as well, but it drives again.

Seems a bit laggier than I remember, but that doesn't bother me. Peak RPM on the drive home from the workshop was 8875rpm. and it paints lines on the road, which I think is cool.

Next step, change the oil for the first time in 18 months, and then fix the speedo and dash lights. Might try and knock the front guard straight and give it a spray with some rattle cans till I can get rid of the GTR and spend some coins on a proper paint job for it.

Oh yeah, and gate noises rocks.

I've always wanted to jump in and buy an RX-7. FC's are pretty cheap now... most have been through a rebuild too (seems a lot of people take them to Rick Shaw for the job). Are they really that unreliable? Is having one as a daily out of the question? You gotta let us know what it's like to own one dude!

Trolls Royce
17-02-07, 01:27 AM
Actually Justin, most of the cars I would say have not been rebuilt, or if they have, it may have been some time ago. It's hard to find one that has a strong motor, and a lack of proper maintenance can mean nightmares.

They also have some issues with cooling apparently, but mine seems to be ok. Water temps in traffic sometimes get up to 85-90 degrees in the middle of summer, but once you're moving it's fine. Going to swap over to a big alloy radiator towards the end of this year when it gets hot again. also need another oil cooler for it.

Provided you get one with a decent motor and don't go giving it hell all day every day, they are a pretty reasonable car for a daily. Sometimes a little on the noisy side, sometimes a little bumpy, but with the right mods, they drive like a go-kart. I drove home from work with an ear to ear grin yesterday morning.

A friend of mine has one at the moment with a Knightsports RF-320 (i think...) turbo on it and is about to put an intercooler and Power FC on it. If you're interested I can let you know how he goes with that?

Also, thats the first two things to do. Make sure you get a later model FC, known in aus as the S5. They run the electronic oil metering pump and stuff, and they also have Power FC's available for them as far as I am aware. Second thing to do is get a power FC and lose that AFM.

Just a quick update as to how things are progressing...

The old engine is out, and the new engine is getting sorted out as we speak. As far as I am aware, the head gasket and cams should be in by now. I'm ordering a new set of turbos, probably the Garrett 2530 equivilents, and I've managed to get a pair of Tomei dump pipes, Tomei exhaust manifolds, and a set of Splitfire coils.

Insurance should be providing me with a Power FC, and I've got some 555cc injectors, but I'm not sure if these are going to be big enough. I guess it all depends on boost levels.

Also bought an OS Giken twin plate clutch for it too.

All that really remains is AFM's and fuel pump, and everything should be ready to rock.

It's been about a year since the Luce engine was rebuilt, and it gets driven everyday. 100% reliable (touch wood!) but I think a lot comes down to who does the work on it and whether it was a thorough job or not. A lot of places seem to offer cheap rebuilds but then you hear of a lot of rotary guys who have to rebuild it again within a year (or less!).

I'm going to need bigger injectors from the looks of things. Tomei dumps, manifolds, and splitfire coilpacks showed up today, and I also bought a pair of turbos. Things are seriously looking up at the moment.

I'm going to track down a set of Sard 700cc injectors and a Nismo pump soon, as well as some Z32 AFM's and a Power FC. Also managed to get a full HKS piping kit, including suction pipes to suit Z32 AFMs. Shiny....

Time for another update.

Injectors, AFM's and pump have been installed, as well as gauges and boost controller. All the interior of the car is back together and it has been given a quick tune by CRD so I can run it in.

So now the mrs has the car and is on the way to QLD with it. Should be back in Sydney mid-jan with 3000km more on it, so then it's back to CRD for more. Supposedly my fuel pump is only flowing as much as a standard one, but I've been told this could just be a wiring issue with the pump.

dead32
24-12-07, 12:14 AM
what pump is it?

Trolls Royce

Nismo GTR. Supposedly they have some hi/low voltage thing that needs to be sorted out.

Babalouie
24-12-07, 02:02 AM
You could run a relay with the pump, use the stock pump wiring to activate/switch the relay, but the pump itself you wire up separately so that you know you're getting a full 12V at the pump.

exactly, best way to make sure ur not getting a voltage drop. therefore stable flow :D... if its anything like the silvia series of the same era then there is an inline resistor that u can take out...

So as a small update, I just got back from QLD a few days ago. Motor now has 4500km on it, and I'm going to try and book it in at CRD for a tune next week. Cams have made it quite a bit heavier on fuel on the long haul, but that might get better once the tune is cleaned up.

Car made 313rwkw, which is pretty much spot on what CRD told me it would make. Only thing I've done since getting the car back from CRD is turn the gain on the boost controller down ever so slightly.

Got a stock catback for my EPA test as well, and trying to sort out a stock airbox too.

Hopefully once I'm through that I can throw a nice quiet Kakimoto system on it and not lose too much top end.

Suspension and brakes are also growing closer.

Long time, no post....

Recently got a Trust 13-row oil cooler and filter relocation kit fitted. Also means I have a spot to plug in my oil pressure gauge. Anyone know how much oil pressure is too much? When the motor is warm, 3000rpm is 6bar and redline is 7bar.

Next on the agenda is the brakes. Once I've picked this up, the car will go back in for the brakes, suspension and rear diff, and if I'm super lucky, front diff. Apparently when fitting the Nismo front diffs, a bit of the diff casing has to be machined away. Whatever.

I also need a new gearbox. I was thinking about doing that whole PAR/PPG gearset thing, but everyone seems to break them. I also can't be bothered with the noise they make. My gearbox still works, but it's not 100%, which annoys me. Justjap sell new ones from Nissan, so that'll probably match the engine will, being new also. Might as well do that after the brakes and junk.

Then wheels, then seats, then MAYBE half cage. Then paint it. Then it's done....

I'll take some photos soon. Engine bay is all pretty now.

where does the 7 fit into those plans? :P

either way sucks about the box.. then again if the car isn't going to be daily driven I wouldn't bother so much about the whine from a straight-cut syncro set.

Ugh, fuck the whine. It probably is going to remain as the daily driver, which is why I don't want to lean on the engine too hard or any of that business, and why I went with Monoflex over something more track oriented.

It's the sort of car that I want to be able to do both a trackday and a road trip in. Speaking of which, I still want to do a Great Ocean Rd trip in this thing.

Do you have any pics of the GTR, would be nice to see what it looks like now and under the bonnet...

I do actually, just gotta get around to doing it. I've got 4 days off after tonight, so I'll try to put some up.

It looks stock with a few shiny bits. Pretty unexciting.

Also, on a hot day, this car sucks dicks. Just feels all laggy and unresponsive in 30 degree heat and traffic.

Best bring it to the UK then! It's single digit degrees here, and minus at night and early morning....booooooooost....

Hahahahaha, I'd love that.

We had a cold night here a little while ago. The car felt like an animal.

Time to update another thread....

So, engine blew up again, supposedly due to being overreved.

Crank bearings on number 5 destroyed, and they left some marking on the crank. Could get the crank repaired, but I bought a new one anyway. Engine is currently in the process of getting assembled. Last update I got was the head was getting the portwork done. Also found out that the pistons that came out of the engine had some hairline cracks in them. There are going to be replaced with a set of CP's, cos I'm too broke for the real deal.

Car has had R34 Brembos fitted up with braided lines. Still running factory rotors and pads cos they came with the calipers and are in perfect condition. Also got Nismo diff and Tein Monoflex installed, as well as replacing all suspension bushes with Nismo items. Nismo engine and gearbox mounts also dropped in as my engine mounts were shot.

The only things left untouched now in the driveline will be the transfer case and tailshaft. Hoping it's going to be much nicer to drive.

Was thinking about shooting for more power and getting the crank sent away to get grublinished or screw polished or whatever they to do them, as well as a set of Spool rods, but I dunno if I can be bothered. Too much money.

Finally a photo....

New engine is currently getting put back together. Should have it back early in the new year I guess. Then run it in, and possibly think about selling it.

Engine specs something along the lines of below.

R33 N1 block
Standard rods
Standard crank
Nismo head gasket (1.2mm I think..)
86.5mm CP Pistons
ARP rod bolts
Nismo crank bearings
Nismo oil pump
Tomei 260deg 9.15mm Poncams
Tomei cam gears
Tomei exhaust manifolds
Tomei dump pipes
Garrett GT2860R-5 turbos
Nismo 600cc injectors
Nismo fuel pressure reg
Nismo fuel pump

Starting to feel like it's a never ending money pit. All these clowns keep tellin me I'll feel different as soon as I drive it again. Maybe so. Either way, I think I need to either sell this or the FC.

Vashcat
22-12-09, 08:51 AM
Sell the FC, starting with a fresh rb26 should give you another 10,000k driving before next rebuild. :P
But really hold onto the 32 big fella.
