Shit man.. Ok, so im back..

What justin said was

"I can speak a bit of Indonesian, Yonas is the one that teaches me. He wont teach me rude words like dick, vagina, ass, etc"

but your writing is strange. like english writing indonesian...

anyway, it has been a little while, but I'll start from the beginning.

This is a bit of my week 1 diary.

Day 1 – Friday

Well, i'm sitting here, it's 10:23 am, and i'm in Jakarta.

Last night, was off its head. We arrived at about 7pm local time, and it took a little while to get through customs, they didnt even scan my bag. After stepping off the plane, it was so hot! Although it was night time, it was like stepping into a sauna!

Hendrick took his sweet ass time getting through customs because he filled out the wrong form – so eventually, after exiting, we met up with Hilman and his driver, and Hendrick's uncle, we'll call him Om.

Anyway, The most interesting thing about Jakarta, is that there are people everywhere. SO many people, everywhere. It is unbelievable. And although looking on the map, the distance from the airport, Soekarno Hatta to our Hotel in Semanggi, is not that far, it took us about 2 hours. I took a couple of videos of the car ride, the traffic was unlike anything I have ever seen before! Most of the roads are toll roads, but they aren't too expensive, maybe 2,500 rupiah, which is like maybe 30 cents or something, but when you factor in the amount of traffic that passes through the gates, then you can understand that owning these toll roads is a pretty lucrative business.

Gotta go shopping for some clothes – wasn't that successful, but I'll continue where I left off.

Anyway, after arriving at our hotel after negotiating our way through the city we met up with Hilman's cousin, Risky. Whilst in the car from the bandara – (airport) hendrick's uncle who has the same name organized a room for us at the Hotel Borobudur. Now, the problem is that my batteries have not worked too well on my camera, but I have taken a few pictures, as you can see.

So we jump in the Kijang (like a Toyota 4wd but smaller), all 8 of us, and get to Hotel borobudur. And everyone is astounded because there are bule (white people) and we immediately get ushered into the VIP elevator. We get into a karaoke room and there's Manchester United VS Benfica on the TV and the score is 2-1. But, Uncle decided that we needed some indonesian girls, so out of nowhere, these three chicks come into the room and start singing. Thing is, us bule are thinking that we're probably at a brothel, and feel really uncomfortable at the idea of having prostitutes hanging out with us on the first night in Indonesia. But we find out that they're not actually hookers, just like a kinda Indonesian geisha or something! Risky is an awesome singer, absolutely unbelievable. He put us all to shame with his skills, singing in English and Indonesian.

The ride home was interesting. Imagine 5 drunk whiteys and 2 drunk Indonesians, screaming out the window – and we drive past McDonalds. At 3am, it doesn't matter if you're in Melbourne, or Jakarta, McDonalds is still open, and there's nothing like the feeling of a quarter pounder in your mouth after 6 litres of beer.

Ordering is a bit difficult because the Indonesians aren't quite used to bule speaking their language, and even though you get the language perfect, and pronunciation as good as a bule can get, they're still not used to hearing Bahasa Indonesia from someone that's not asian :).

The other thing that is awesome is that there is cricket on! Its on ESPN india, and the commentary is in English too! Seems like we're doing better in the 3rd innings.

Beer is CHEAP, like EVERYTHING in this place. Only 10 bucks for 3 litres, and after 15 jugs between the 7 of us, uncle was driving, we were trashed. Hilman ended up having a bit of a chuck in the bathroom all over the floor, and somehow destroying the shower curtain in the process. Cigarettes are about 9,500 ($1.50) a packet for Dunhill blue, but there are cheaper that are like 5,000 rupiah, so i dont think there will be a chance to quit while I am here.

The thing about Indonesia, is that it appears to be a developing country, but from what I can tell, it has everything that we have back home in Australia, the problem is that there is a issue with distribution. Joel commented that it's unusual to be stared at so much and it's an inquisitive yet angry kind of stare. I dunno how to take it.

I'm finding the language barrier, not too hard at all. They speak pretty quickly, and there are a lot of slang words that I do not know at the moment. But the problem is, that because I'm tired, and because it's all new. I'm finding that I'm talking to my friends in Indonesian more and more. Like, Hilman will ask me a question like “what's that noise” (we're watching the cricket at the moment and it's windy, we're on the 53rd floor of the Hotel). And I respond itulah angin, or it's just the wind. It's like some quasi-form of English that we're using now. The other bule are starting to incorporate Indonesian words into their english dialogue. Very very strange.

teman saya, org bule, sakit perut selama 3 minggu, mencret 1000x sehari. astaga!

wow, what a trip!

a few pics from the aftermath of the floods. this is TINY compared to what i witnessed. waist deep water and even worse in some areas.

highlights for me:
- sisters wedding relocated in a week
- rescuing an elderly man from his flooded home
- walking in waist deep flooded water and seeing a snake swim right by me!
- my engagement party

some pics from jakarta. far from the extremities of the floods though:
