"But with the throttle screwed on, there is only the barest margin, and no room at all for mistakes. It has to be done right... and that's when the strange music starts, when you stretch your luck so far that fear becomes exhilaration and vibrates along your arms. You can barely see at a hundred; the tears blow back so fast that they vaporize before they get to your ears. The only sounds are the wind and a dull roar floating back from the mufflers. You watch the white line and try to lean with it... howling through a turn to the right, then to the left, and down the long hill to Pacifica... letting off now, watching for cops, but only until the next dark stretch and another few seconds on the edge... The Edge... There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. The others- the living- are those who pushed their luck as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later. But the edge is still Out there. Or maybe it's In. The association of motorcycles with LSD is no accident of publicity. They are both a means to an end, to the place of definitions."

God. such a hard decision hahaha drift car or custom bike that i cant legally ride.....

if you mean because of l's/p's restrictions there are plenty of rad bikes you can ride legally, mods wise is another thing... especially if you go 70's yamaha or kawasaki two stroke action

at quick glance at least half the bikes Garth posted are learner legal.

haikii
24-04-09, 12:43 PM
Ah right, whats the go with making a custom bike getting it lam approved. is it just as simple as getting it to the engineer checking it over for an ok and he'll give you a plate?

Rob86
25-04-09, 11:10 PM
dude i wouldn't bother. if it's an old bike you have a 99% chance that no cop or car rego inspector will have even the slightest idea what they are looking at plus generally there is nothing overly, if at all illegal about a lot of the mods. As long as you keep a chain gaurd, mirrors and indicators somewhere on the bike you should be right.

Look at the bikes deus ex machina are pumping out to rich old tards at extortionary prices, on some of them everything including the frames are tampered with and are sold as learner legal.

My first bike was so modded engine wise and to a lesser extent body wise it was hilarious but it was on the list and i never got hassled in the slightest.
also my current bike is LAM approved (xs650) and if you saw it....

So without me rambling on any more just make sure you get it rego'd and then within reason do what you want but keep the stock parts, a couple of mirrors and a chain guard take no time to throw back on before inspection.

Sorry about the essay guys!

go to scotts motorcycles at rockdale. they sell import yamaha sr500's at fairly reasonable prices especially compared to deus.... go to deus if you have a lot of cash to waste.

otherwise buy a stock bike and do it up yourself, a lot of the mods are easy enough to do if you have basic mech skills.

There are some rad bikes on the lams list (especially the 70's two strokes!) and most of them will be faster and a lot more fun then going for yet another freekin' cbr250!

hey garth what bike is this i'm obsessed with it!

it's a kawasaki w650, Garth was going to buy one until the vespa of his dreams popped up.

Look up Brat Style and go to their site, they build lots like this (that's where this is taken from)

It wouldn't be hard at all to build one up like this...

haikii
20-05-09, 06:13 PM
Is garth on a vespa now? wtf? unless it is like 1970 vespa i've just lost all respect for you :P

cause then we can dress you up and do this! pa pow!

yeah as soon as i posted that i started looking through that brat style site its fucking awesome

w650 aren't LAM though hey? bit expensive aswell

Rob86
20-05-09, 08:44 PM
power to weight too high? or maybe they were just overlooked, the old ones are pretty rare and i don't think too many were around until gayeus started bringing them in.

You can ride a yamaha xs650 on l's/p's, the older ones look good and the w650's are very similar aesthetically . I have one and will maybe have another soon...

Alternatively you could go the real deal and get a triumph or bsa but they are expensive and you had better have some mechanical skills. On the plus side though you can get away with a lot more like not running indicators and such.

Garth Ivers
20-05-09, 09:46 PM
yup ive got a vespa now. soon after my coming out i was confident enough to express my life choices and went and bought the cutest one i could find..

arent you all proud of me?

lol you fucken dumb****s, NO i do not ride a friggen twist-and-go... fuck you rob lol

20-05-09, 10:06 PM
yeah no i'm really interested in buying a bike like these even though i was just about to buy a trail bike although my parents wont let me get a road bike

what would an sr500 or xs650 be as a learner bike? but it wont be used that often mainly as a project

Rob86

what do you mean?

assuming you mean what would they be like they would be fine.
the xs's are a little heavy but not awkward like modern sports but they are an old bike so you may have to maintain one a little more.

sr's are light, skinny and can be modded to go reasonably fast plus have every aftermarket part available for them easily. Also you can buy a virtually new one which means less issues. The down side to them is they usually are more expensive than xs's (although xs's are creeping up there) and you unfortunately get the stigma of a deus bike attached which really fucking sucks and has ruined sr's for a lot of people.

If you were to go for one building it as a street/flat tracker (like the one pictured) rather than a cafe bike would be better to learn on as the positioning makes the bike a lot easier to manouver and you have better visibility sitting like that.

either bike would be good, i am tossing up whether to keep my xs and buy another one (one hard tailed and one tracker'd for practicality) or sell it and build an sr as fast an skinny as possible. Its a hard pick between the bike's and the deus stigma is a huge factor against the sr as i already have people ask or say my xs is a gayeus bike and it is fucking annoying!!

Hey Garth when are you taking me for a spin on your vespa?? hahaha

ayden_d
21-05-09, 12:17 PM
it seems to be quite difficult to get a xs or sr through bikesales or other sites so i was just wondering would it be worth looking into importing your own bike?

so what is your new bike then garth? because that tw200 looks mad

Rob86

xs's are kind of rare and like most things of that nature you have to know where to look or the right people.
you shouldn't have a problem finding sr's though but dont expect to find either bike looking the way you want, they will more than likely be in cafe trim or stock.

How much do you want to spend?

ayden_d
21-05-09, 02:17 PM
oh yeah i wouldnt want to buy one that is already looking like that one as that's half the fun. i'd probably end up spending a bit less 5k on one that work need a bit of work

I think it's an xs400 judging by the size. the xs 250's and 400's engines aren't a brit copy and both look like that.

xs400's don't have a good rep plus are pretty scarce...

Look up wrench monkeys, im pretty sure they built it. they are sweedish or dutch or one of those snowy euro countries haha

Hey guys, just asking for some ideas, Im considering selling the bike to pay for some stuff i need for school, hopeing to get about 5,500 or so. Most likely have about 3000 left over and yeah not too sure what bikes are out there. I loved danielb's old srx400, loved the kick start and the look of it although its rare as horseshit or anything that might be a good base for perhaps cafe racer style. I am on my p's so LAM approved only..

Yeah i still haven't seen another SRX400 since then. I have seen some SRX600's though, and as far as i know they were sold locally in Aus. Learner legal as well.. twin front discs etc.

It will be hard to find something that you will want for that kind of cash unless you are willing to or able to do some work yourself. Old or classic styled bikes are rising quite quickly in price lately.

There are a heap of lam approved bikes that would fit the bill for what you want.
yamaha sr500, xs250/400/650, rd250/350/400 (stupidly fast with a little work 70's two strokes)

old cb250/360/400 honda's

kawasaki kh100- 650

Suzuki t250 and maybe the t550.

Im sure there are a few more out there plus all the British bikes but the will be way more expensive

haikii
27-05-09, 11:15 PM
I'd love nothing more to do the work myself. Theres no better way.

Ive always had an eye on the CD250 when i first saw one for sale years ago.

Heres a cool pic of one by Heiwa Motorcycles

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zkezPcJr-mE/SZAIM6cvdXI/AAAAAAAAAL4/Gb8M0XmpuP8/s320/cd250.jpg

The cd's wouldn't be a bad choice at all, super reliable and cheap rego! I've seen a few going for 3g or less lately and that one looks pretty damn nice

If you go for a yamaha though they are way easier to find or adapt aftermarket parts.

What a week it has been for my shit box bike collection!

First up I got my main xs running sweet as after some half assed self tuning resulting in some missing.
I then ordered and paid for my hardtail from Dan at SLICE & DICE in qld. I hate how poor the stance is on most xs's due to the steep backbone so after a chat with Dan he put my mind at ease and is building one that should look just right, like the one below...
Lastly I got the engine on the new one to turn over so next chance I get I'm going to hook up the vitals and try get the bastard to fire up.

These two are major inspirations to how my ridged one will hopefully turn out, the first built by Dan at Slice & Dice and is pretty much the best xs i have seen and the other, who knows.

There aren't many forums but there are a million and one blogs.
A huge chunk of these pics are stolen from bubble visor blog which are in turn taken from a lot of builders websites and other blogs...

If you are after mags for these bigs check out dice, greasy kulture (yep with a k just to be extra "kustom"), cafe racer and sideburn. you can get them from faster pussycat and motociclo.

I predict lots more 'tracker' conversions appearing in the coming years. Much like 'fixie' conversions in the bicycle world. I reckon the more mundane learner bikes, CB250Ns, GN250s and stuff would actually work quite well for the application.

It was awesome. It looked like a bobber/cafe racer rolled up into one. Some sort of harley motor, wire spoke wheels, balloon tyres, no usual harley shit hanging off it, totally matt black all over and the old style tractor leather seat on springs. It looked fantastic. hey guys,

does any1 have any recommendations for where to look for classic bikes? im looking at buying a yamaha xs650 (1977-1980) and havnt had much luck finding one. biksales etc seem to have only highly overpriced dealer bikes and ebay doesnt have much of anything.

cheers

Yeap that was me, you drive a r31? I remember that day.

Hero I was in the 31,I had been having the idea to get a classic or older bike and your bike inspired me to look into it better, keeping my eye out for a cx500 although I duno if they are Learner approved?

they just look like an importer from Japan.
there are plenty of SR400 and 500's around, they just have the "tax" levied on them now because they've become popular. w650 Kawas aren't that old either, bargain hard with some of the people advertising on bikesales/bikepoint as some of them have been for sale for a long time.

anyone know the link/site that has the game (flash maybe?) where you build your own harley and can customise it?

There's a sportster at work that has orange rims and cloth wrapped pipes, I descibed it to my boss and then we got chatting about customised harleys, I told him about the site, now he wants to have a go at building up a sportster for the daily commute - he's got an idea in his head of what it would look like but the game would be pretty handy for him.

I also got chatting to a student at work that has a GB400, he told me it sucks on the freeway. there goes that idea for my next daily.

they look the goods although i would hate the limited travel and harsh ride, limits the bike to a definite street tracker with no off road use possible

i dont think people build bobbers/choppers to take them off roading, there easily just a road cruiser. Although ive seen a growing trend with allot of bobbers and even cafe racers using dirt tyres to add more of a vintage look to their bikes.

i saw a few pics on a japanese blog site with 4 bobbers going nuts in a dirt field so people are starting to push the boundaries... ill try and find the site again
