View Full Version : Ever been this situation?

My day started off bad and has gotten worse... I was front ended tonight (and if anyone's curious or saw it, the accident was on the corner of Glenaiyre Avenue and Curlewis St in Bondi, nearing 8.30pm). Front bumper is all scuffed up like a mofo, number plate has shat itself and the bonnet needs replacing... that's all I can see from tonight. I'll have a better view of the damage in the morning.

HOWEVER, the accident wasn't my fault. A girl on P-plates stopped at an intersection out the front of a convenience store (people in Sydney - Glenayre Ave and Curlewis Street in Bondi) and I came to a stop about 3 or 4 meters behind when out of nowhere she chucks it into reverse and WOOOOSHKA, straight into my front end. Only thing is I had no witnesses in the car and they had a full car load so God knows how the hell this is all going to turn out.

The only upside to this is that there is no damage to the radiator support or anything that looks structural, so I guess the only way to look is up.

Not the best time to happen when I've got assignments due in the next few weeks either.

QUESTION: I had no witnesses and the other car had a full car load. If they were to say turn the story to say that I smacked into the back of them what would happen? It definitely wasn't my fault, and if shit goes down which Police station should I turn to for advice? I was thinking Bondi police station since it was there. I've got the plates and all the details of the other driver.

The pics... so fucking depressed right now...

But you have the Name, number plate and phone number of that girl?

I dont know how it is in Australia, but dont you get the police for exchanging all you phonenumber and adress.
The police blames one person for causing the accident. They also document if there are skidmarks from the cars.

If the girl refuses to pay, you can make an expertise if you car stood still and was hit by the other car.
If you would have driven into the girl, the front of the car goes down. This way it can get proofed who hit who. Another way is, if the barke light of the girls car broke you can see at the lightbulb if it was glowing or not at the moment of the collision.

At the police you should mention that the other car was fully loaded. Can be a hint, that she couldnt look back.

Its a shame your car is a bit old, because otherwise that "new car ECU black box" could have worked out in your favour.

And since its your ECU and not hers, she can't block it as being submitted as evidence in court since its not violating her privacy in any way.

If I ever get front ended like that in a way that causes major damage (and this has happened to me before as well), I'll have my car towed so its not driven again.

That way when the guys pull the last few seconds of what my car was doing from the ECU's memory, they'll see it wasn't moving so any impact must have been caused by the other party.

With all that bad weather last night I'm not surprised!!!

You should be AOK so long as you have all the details, time, location everything.

All the best man, shame about the damage but it looks like you'll be getting her back to looking just fine.

there is no black box in cars new or old
we were doing scans on cars for the police for about 12 months to determine what happened in a shit load of fatal accidents
the data comes from the ABS module

Really? I guess these guys (http://editorial.carsales.com.au/car-review/2014830.aspx) don't know what they're talking about.

We all know that aircraft have Flight Data Recorders. The so-called black boxes log information on an endless tape (and digitally) so that the last few minutes of any flight can be reconstructed.

But how many motorists know that hundreds of thousands of cars on Australian roads also have black boxes and that police and insurance companies can with sufficient cause gain access to the data stored.
...
Simply, if your car contains an airbag, it has an event data recorder (or black box) of some type. Some record only up to a fraction of a second before a crash or deployment event. Others, like late model GMs, record up to five seconds of data.

And Holden should sue Fairfax for their lies about the VE Commodore (http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=1943):

Holden Australia says its latest VE Commodore range has a device that records a car's speed before a crash, acceleration and braking, if seatbelts were buckled and if the airbags worked properly.

Police could use the information to prove if drivers were speeding before an accident.

Fairfax even has the audacity to claim that Holden themselves say this non-existant device is in their cars. I'd be furious if people were putting words into my mouth, especially when its about something as sensitve as people's right to privacy.

ill say it again
my boss and i were to ones who started scanning vehicles for the poilce and insurance companies giving them speeds, braking, seat belt and occupancy data etc
so i think i would personally know how the systems work and what the cars do and dont have.

they dont have a seperate box the records data
in most new cars which use a can bus system all the individual control units recieve the same data
and store the last couple hundred metres so you can get speeds from ABS, SRS, insturment cluster etc etc.
you can still get speeds from cars without CAN as long as they have ABS or SRS.
holden didnt even know their cars recorded until we approached them asking for a letter of recognition that data was stored.
we have done extensive testing and are still testing more and more vehicles
to prove that it all works and to have it certified
so it can be used as evidence in court.

no one in australia knew any of this data existed until we stumbled upon it by accident.

what you talking about?
i was in your car when it happened! :p

if she can spin lies so can you

no but seriously if shes on her red p's im assuming shes pretty young? if she does try to lie with it ask her and her friends to sign a stautory declaration of what happened and say if in any way shes caught lying (you can make up the story about the black box i guess) then its off to jail for her and her friends. permanent criminal record etcetc

hopefully it wont be worth the risk for her

they dont have a seperate box the records data

I never said there was a separate box which records data.

If you note the inverted commas I used when referring to the device, it designates a quote. The media and the OEMs refer to some electronic system retaining a certain amount of data from a specific set of inputs as a "black box" so Joe Public can understand what they're talking about in 2 simple words, since an aircraft's "black box" (I'd hazard to say that not all of them are black these days, so please don't start on the fact that the one your cousin the aeronautical engineer worked on being grey means that not all aircraft have "black boxes" either) is something that everyone in the modern era understands.

But, by your own comments about how "in most new cars which use a can bus system all the individual control units recieve the same data
and store the last couple hundred metres so you can get speeds from ABS" etc, that data is available.

And my original point (whether you choose to call it a "black box", "grey box", "ivory box with the aubergine polka dots", "data logger", "CAN bus input storage subsystem", "widget #5245") is that its possible for people to pull this data out of the car and say, "Hey, when the accident happened my car was doing 0 km/hr" is still valid.

wow... neva relised how cleaver cars are. All these little gizmo's and stuff. You guys are like little detectives... it's cool! hehe.

man so sorry to hear about that. That exact thing happened to a friend of mine a year ago, and he went straight to the cop shop reported it. Other person got into shit. So yeah... go report it to insurance and cops. Did she do a runner btw? Cos if she did... it kinda proves that she reversed into you!

I think we need to do a JDMST mission day: Locate the girl, and bash her!
