Can anyone suggest a suitable learner bike out there on the market?
New/Used...it doesnt matter. I want an idea of whats available for me.
I know the limit is a 250 and the only bike ive really looked at is the
CBR125R. Any other bikes I should consider??

cheer.

Personally i wouldnt get a cbr125 rather go the older cbr250rr coz u'll probs want more power once you get use to riding. Also if you do a lot of freeway riding the cbr125 will take longer to get to those speeds.

Another option if you want a 125 is an aprilia but they 2 stroke so maintenance won't be as cheap as a 4 stroke.

P.S. probs wanna post in the motorcycle section as you'll probs get more help there

What are you after from the bike mate?

Personally if i had to go through it all again id buy a DRZ400SM or a CBR250 again

Theres heaps of choices though mate...

What state do you live in, cause not all states restrict you to just 250s

Roadster

I'd even go dr650!

the power of a cbr250 is nice, but the reliability of a cbr125r plus the warranty and fuel injection it has makes it a better daily bike IMO.

danielb

It's so sorely lacking in power though. The 250cc parallel-powered kawasaki bikes would be heaps better for a daily

I had an NSR150SP and would get it again, I had a heap of fun on it, with the long P's period I'd consider an RVF400, they are an awesome bike, pricey though. CBR250RR or ZX2R (ZXR250) are good fun, like Dan said in the other thread DRZ400SM or any dirtbike will keep you entertained, they don't handle too bad either, gearing is too short for long rides though IMO

I personally wouldn't get a 250cc inline twin, I don't like the way they ride, power feels too lazy for a small bike IMO. although GS500's and ER5's are nice to ride, great daily and handle pretty well too. (ask tommo haha)

I'm in the process of getting a Learner license too. It doesn't have to be 250cc, it's the power to weight ratio thingy (if someone can clear on that for me) as there are some 400cc bikes available for Learners. I'd love to get a Honda CBR250RR but the clean examples normally would cost the same as a new bike so I'm looking at getting the 250R Ninja as it will be a new bike and with warranty. Anyone else can suggest anything else?

patawan

I currently got a 250r ninja now, great bikes to learn on. Power wise i think its pretty good for a learner gets up to 80-100km pretty easily.
The only downside I feel with it is that 1st isn't the best but once you get to 2nd it goes good. I was initially looking at the cbr250rr but with the price they were going for and the age i opted to go brand new and spend extra $$$ for warranty and piece of mind.
Ninja 250r is good on fuel as well get about 300km on a full tank which is awesome considering it cost <$20.

Melvin, whats your budget mate? Maybe we can help you more if you give us a budget. Also, what are you looking for in a bike? Comfortability, acceleration, speed, looks, reliability.... more info needed!!

completely agree! having recently ridden the RVF400 and its predecessor the VFR400, id say go with either of these bikes.

The V4 engine sounds really unique and they ride brilliantly. The newer RVF400's have inverted front forks and great brakes too.

The RVF is probably the most finely crafted sports 400 ever built. Exquisite.

I'd also consider a CB400 (if you're spending 'new bike money')

Yeah the rvf is a very fun bike, I had the pleasure of doing putty on a nicely modified one my mate owned, vfr isn't lams though, it has a few more hp, via different carbs

The cb400 looks like a very good bike, I haven't ridden one though

well im looking in the range of <8000. definately used. not quite loaded as some of the dudes here nor do i work hard  . uni student + part time warehouse work, not enough money :(

im looking to a street bike, so no dirt bikes or cruisers, thats quite comfortable, i dont want something that sits too low in the driving position ala moto GP style and im only 170cm tall. us filipinos aint too tall.

if i had to explain looks, speed, acceleration. theres a black ninja being sold here on the forums. that would be my perfect bike right now.

If you're going to buy 2nd hand and you got noooo idea on what to look for probably best to get someone at it for you. When i went to look at an RVF400 before i bought my VTR250 i had this guy Paul, http://www.motorcycleinspectionservices.com.au/index.htm, look at one for me. Very nice guy, professional and he really knew his stuff and because the bike was such a dud he said if you want to have another inspection ill give you at discounted rates!... But i if you can get one of the guys from the forum to help you inspect it;'ll save you the 200!

I got to ride the RVF400 though wikid bike but if i had 8,000 to play with id try and bargain down some CB400's haha.

Hmm all the above sound really good, especially the RVF 400, they are a nice bike. If your not afraid of riding a Korean bike have a look at the hyosung. I bought one for the size, warranty etc... and as much as the older ones have had probs I havent heard of major issues from the 2007 and later bikes. I have a 2008, and I havent had any probs. With a little bit of work the 650RL (lams approved) can be a fun bike still.

Buy a DRZ400SM !

Right in your price range, more torque than 250s plus you can hop gutters n shit

Yeah they are a good bike, I rode one with a pipe and some pilot powers on it, it was good fun. they are a very reliable bike too.

im looking to buying the RVF400 looks good. but looking around on bikesales, doesnt seem like nsw have them. They must, but no one is advertising. Prob go visit action motorcycles or something

For the guys who have riden the new RVF's , whats the ride like on it. Is it a hell of alot different to a 250cc considering its still LAM approved.

Team Moto at Blacktown have a few from time to time. if they don't they could source one easily. as could any dealer.

The one I rode had, Pilot Powers, Full Exhaust, Braided Lines etc. It had good mid range and a good top end, turned nicely, braked well.

The main thing you'll notice over a 250cc 4 cyl is the bigger mid range whilst still maintaining a good top end.

They have good support from Tyga Performance in Thailand too, they make some good parts for many bikes.

V4's are an awesome engine in general, pity the only perfomance bike with on is the RSV4 these days (or the Desmo RR haha) like Garth said they sound great, with a pipe you get an awesome growl, I even think V4s sound better than the inline 4 scream and 1000x better than a V-twin fart ( :P )

As you can tell from that novel I really do love RVF400's haha

Garth: I know haha

And Yeah that place has heaps, most have the Tyga "RC211V" style kit, same with their CBR250RR's, and most have some sort of Race Rep Paint Job on it, I much prefer the standard RVF Body.

Dan: That place is awesome, I think Steve tipped me off on them, I got mine for $392... most places wanted around $680. the had the info sent to the RTA like normal too, sweet as.
