Just got back from first ever track day on the bike, and my GOD was it awesome. Can't even compare it to doing track days in a car...

Turn 1 at EC is amazing, anyone with a bike has to experience it.

Just thought i'd create this thread anyway just to chat about experiences, techniques, random questions, whatever.

Congrats mate! i plan on doing a trackday later on, once i get a suit and some boots. :)
If you dont mind me asking how much roughly does it cost for a trackday at EC? Manage to get any times down too?

Just wondering would it be best off doing a Superbike School Course before doing trackdays?

I heard the Superbike School is good, however my friend recommended that I hit the track at least once beforehand.

If you have never driven at EC before, I suggest you do a ride day there before completing SBS level 1. It helps to know the track or at least know that turns 2 and turns 9 are very slow when executing their drills.

when I was doing my level one, more than half the people in my class had never done a track day. end result is that once we hit the track they were still putting around at 60kph around corners on a unknown track unable to fully concentrate on the drills they were suppose to do... whilst I rode around overtaking everyone without the use of brakes for the corners... LOL

But that's cause you're awesome steve!

collin;

EC trackday cost me $185 including lunch.

To be honest i have no regrets about doing a trackday before some form of superbike school thing, but that's up to the individual.

Quick snap of me on the day hehee (couldnt resist)

I haven't done a track day yet, maybe cause I seem to be pitting/timing/photographing them all the time haha but I would do at least a few track days before superbike school, you just have to watch and follow the right people, and even the wrong ones, no one way is perfect so just as you can learn from schools you can learn heaps from watching and talking to other riders, as well as having people critique your style too

trackdays at EC cost around $200+ can be cheaper in a group buy, but its well worth it, no cars to worry about, and the straight is pure goodness, except when the bigger bikes overtake u the first couple of times where u can nearly piss yourself

check out http://sydneymotorbikes.net/ they do some trackday organising

also they have a 50cc pocketbike race up the eastern/northern suburbs

What is the toll of a trackday on your bike/tires like?

e.g. You come back with lots of rubber balling up on the edges when using soft compound tyres like Pirelli Dragon Supercora's are the tyres still ok for normal road use and more track days?

danielb
14-08-09, 09:11 AM
I find it's easier on the bike than trackdays are on a car.

My tyres had balled-up rubber on the sides, but once you lean the bike over again on the road it gets rid of it all quickly. Still fine for road use, of course depending on how much tread is left.

I need to get out there and do another day :(

Thanks,

do you see nubs stacking it thinking they are Rossi or Pedrosa? Or mainly guys doing slow speeds on every corner?

Depends a lot on which group you're in, the EC days are split into 4 groups ranging from slow to fast. There were a lot of crashes the day i went (one involving a certain forum member, :P ).

You do however have both ends of the spectrum, people who think they are godly (some of them are very quick) and the others who dawdle around the track and can actually be quite dangerous to ride with due to their unpredictability!

heavier riders, those who are fast and who enjoy powering out of corners will see their tyres destroyed in as little as one to two track days. this also depends on the tyre of course. i've completed 7 track days on my pilot powers and about 8,000km of commuting and there is still tread left. not sure about the heat cycles tho lol.
I usually brake early for slow corners, corner speeds are not bad, but my exit speed can be improved on.

that said, the supercorsas were on my mate's 600rr, and he munched it in two track days, he is lapping ec in the 1:55's, but he is biggish fella.

hey, it was cold, and i was stupid to go so fast too early.

I hate it when a busa or thou holds you up in the corners, and you manage to overtake them, only for them to fly right by you on the straights and then slow down to 140kph for turn one! GRRRRR

you'll net 2:0x at the end of the day....

for turn one... just make sure your in position for the corner heaps early! stop breathing and turn in at 180kph, resume breathing when you've cleared the turn :)

I will be booking again for November 7th @ EC if anyone else is keen. I'll book mid next month just before I leave on a big trip to the states.

I'll go in the medium slow group as was getting 2:03s last time out very consistently (ie. every lap in the last sesson) and found I was over taking most people... so hoping to improve upon that as after thinking about it for a few days, some areas I reckon I'll net some easy improvements :) All in all, I don't care about the times, but I think if I'm faster I'll have more fun again.

I know this is an incredibly vague and possibly retarded question but what are the most common bikes people ride on an open day? Seeing as a track car is out of the question for me these days I've been more and more keen to get a track orientated bike and do the odd day here and there, nothing serious mind you

anything with two wheels really. I have seen motards to sports tourers to racebikes at trackdays.

I reckon the most common track bike would be CBR600's and R6's alot of them a few years old, have race glass, suspension/tyres and a few other bits and peices added

as steve said though on any given track day there is a massive range of bikes

If you're looking for something fast and already set up (or even just some parts)

If you're on a motard it will be awesome, the straight and t1 won't be the best, but the rest of the track would be so good

If I was rich I reckon I'd ride EC every week if I could haha

the track was slippery, and it wasn't as hot as the week before, hard compound tyres didn't work as well on the colder track, even tho I had tyre warmers on.

majority of the damage is from the bike flipping twice :(, if it slid to a stop, i'd still be riding.... damn oggy knobs. i might just take them off for the track.

well, its nice to ride something slow, there is just so much time to think about stuff before it happens. when to start braking, turn in, getting body into position. pity I didn't time myself with the zzr. just went out for a laugh. overtook like 6 bikes on the zzr lol. 848, hypermotard, cbr900, rsv1000 just to name a few lol.

topped out at a indicated 170kph at the end of the straight :P

yeah, good to have proof of me overtaking other bikes haha.

advice? take your time to learn the track. and make sure you suit up with all protection gear, always be ready for a stack everytime you hop on the bike.
