Picture I took today.

I've wanted one for so many years now I don't know if I want one anymore... but I am still semi tempted.

If they could do 90 - 100kph and had more than 5L fuel capacity I would consider one as a daily for sure

Why not buy a vespa and be all upmarket?

Wait, i just realised how JDM as F*CK that thing is.
Get one. Put tanabes on it

I would buy one cause they look less gay than any normal scooter.

Scooters are so easy though, i would love one for quick trips up the road and to work also.

I have a ute to carry big shit, a CBR1000RR to go fast, and would want a rad little scooter for the other shit

Arrr that looks nuts!

But yeah. The domain was free, it's on my existing hosting package, and a forum takes an hour to get going. Not much hassle really, and if I end up getting a ruckus, it'll be a handy resource (assuming any sort of local community actually springs up). Me no complain!

Hello forum members.

Noticed that we were getting some referral traffic from this site so we decided to take a look and are glad we did so.

If anyone has any questions about the Zoomer/Ruckus we've been specializing in this specific model for the past few years and will gladly help out anyway we can.

If anyone is planning to make it out to this years SEMA show, we've been invited for the second year to take part in the Ruckus Corral which will be held in the new Powersports and Utility Vehicles section located in the South Hall (upper level near Toyota). If you’re in Vegas Nov 3-6, and have the proper credentials, please visit our booth #37089. We're also building out a nifty Yammy TW200 that should hopefully be on display if we can find the time to finish her.

We chopped up a short 30 sec promo vid to promote the Corral this year:

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/D30UXb2ooXs&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/D30UXb2ooXs&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Many thanks to everyone over at SEMA for the opportunity.

And on a somewhat related note, we’ve been chosen as one of the builders for this years Scion xB Tuner Challenge and are also building a matching Ruckus that will be displayed in the truck bed.

To find out more about the Tuner Challenge please visit this LINK (http://www.helloscion.com/Articles/2009/10_M_SEMA_xB.aspx) for Scion’s official press release.

http://bowlsla.com/b/scion/BOWLS-SCION-REND-720.jpg

We are also documenting the entire build on video and have cut up a short trailer:

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eRGQHXSXKds&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eRGQHXSXKds&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

We are an avid reader of both hachiroku.com.au and the build threads blog and are glad to see some of the owners/contributors on this forum.

Here is our project AE86 that we've been working on for some time now and was featured in Auto Salon Magazine a few years back:

http://www.bowlsla.com/recon/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/DSC_0117.jpg

Sorry for the lengthy post, we don't feel like spamming the board anymore than we already have. LOL.

If anyone is interested in seeing more I could post up more shots of bikes we built or provide any info in regards to these cool little buggers.

Glad to hear that Deus might be bringing these guys in. We've been a fan of their work for many years.

Anyways, thanks for listening and we hope to make some new pals in OZ.

Trawlled through the US Ruckus sites last night and worked out that I could have my dream Ruckus pretty well finished for under $5k AUS. Weighing only 50kg, the 50cc motor won't need to be touched internally to get me going at pretty decent speeds.

Best of all; the GF approves! She suggested that if it ever becomes legal to register - we could get 2!!!

Garth Ivers
15-04-10, 05:28 PM
sorry stan but if it hasnt happened by now, its not going to

importing yourself only works for pre-1989 vehicles, otherwise you would need to obtain the mod plate rights and for that you need amongst countless other things, a garage and a trained mechanic to comply the vehicle in its own dedicated bay... oh and a shitload of money and a few bikes for crash-testing purposes

Taz_
15-04-10, 08:53 PM
I think when you can't get something you want it more.

In Europe and the UK they are readily available. In the UK they are not popular at all since they are massively overpriced there compared to other far more powerful scooters.

In Europe they are generally only seen sporting Joey's pizza signage since they are used for pizza delivery.

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb287/Taz_79/joeys.jpg

Both of the above regions have scooters and bikes in high numbers on the roads compared to Oz.

I'm not sure how a Ruckus would go down on Oz roads given the slow top speed.

It really puts a dampener on the novelty factor of it all.

If they are 4k it is cheaper to do a private import, import duty, paper work and rego yourself.... Nobody is going to pay 4k for one of them. The thumper is on saturday, though I'm not sure a japanese bike show in sydney will be able to top one in japan......

Might head up this saturday for the swap meet, been chasing a yammy motor for awhile.

And here is a zoomer I saw in japan (one of many), and a shop that specialized in putting SR500s into random and custom frames. Pretty much what Saturday is about!

You want a Pizza delivery scooter?

(They use them for Joey's pizza here in Germany)...

That's a steep price for a 50cc scooter than struggles to hit 70km/hr and isn't new but I guess it costs money to want to be different.

Brand new they are approx 2,000EUR here ($2,850AUD) + you would need to compliance for Oz.

Low klms ones (less than 1,000klms) are approx 1,600EUR ($2,300AUD)

I saw a woman riding one the other day putting along all wobbly like and it totally ruined the whole image for me.

It would be great to zip around to the shops, maybe when Australia becomes more scooter friendly and road users are more aware of bikes in general they would make more sense.

I guess after all, it doesn't need to make sense if you want one. No one can convince you what you like or don't like.

$4k is a bit of a stretch considering the prices outlined by members above to import one yourself (probably in better nick too)

I'm still keen as mustard for one but will hold out for the first round of reviews by Australian owners to see how it handles our road conditions. I'm only 50kg so the 50cc thing won't be as relevant, but it'd be kinda pointless if it was only capable of doing 20km/hr up one of our hills.

Yes... you can dump a bigger engine into it but given the scooter is so minimal already, you'd be pretty crazy to spend $4k on the frame, wheels, and seat :P

I'm pretty sure you wont be able to do this because they are the only people with the compliance for them and i'm sure they will just ignore you and force you into buying there own bikes which is why they can jack the price up so much. Its just the same process as importing a car so you have to have a workshop comply it

That's overpriced, even for Deus.
Why would you pay so much for something thats pretty much death on wheels like scooters are, that cant go on a freeway and has no dealer support network?

i have no idea what a rx4 wagon is like (guessing by your sig), but the same can probably be said about it. Probably overpriced for a 'car' that's got no dealer support network and all the modern day safety features like airbags etc.

i'm thinking about buying the zoomer, yes $4k is expensive which is kinda holding me back cause i don't have the spare cash, however i also think of the resell value, there's probably someone else out there willing to buy it off me later for roughly the same. the price you pay for that bit of fun with a toy.

I can buy other brand new scooters which are much better & cheaper, it just doesn't have the cool factor of the zoomer... i'm still undecided. it's not really the price, just the 50cc :(

The Ruckus doesn't really suit Australian roads. I've ridden one in Canada and the thing is SLOW. I was going up a slight incline, and it was barely doing ~30km/h.

It'd be perfect if I lived in the city and used it as a runaround (since you rarely go over 40-50km/h in Sydney anyway) but I seriously hope I never see one on the road - it is dangerously slow.

And $4000 for a 50cc scooter is way too much - no matter how you try and justify it. If only it came with a GY6 in it from the factory...

4k is steep for what you can get in comparison. I think it'll be abit of a novelty unless you throw on a bigger motor.
Something less powerful than a postie bike on main roads is quite scary

um no.

car will probably cost all up, 5K. Support network? Mazda dealerships, Bursons if I get really desperate.

Cool is something that looks good, but can still haul. Cool is also butt ugly, but can also deliver a knockout punch. Not cool is dawdling along revving the tits out of something and getting pasted by postie bikes. Thats about as cool as wearing a cardigan made out of a ginormous ballbag.
4K is a lot of money for something with so many limitations. 4K will get you something way cooler and way way way faster than one of these.

And i'm sure 5k can get u something 'faster', 'safer', 'newer' than the rx4 with less 'limitations', but you probably still prefer the rx4 cause you LIKE it more. Nothing wrong with that.

Not everyone's going to buy the faster and cheaper bike or even car for that matter. Would you rather a $5k rx4 or a $5k civic?

4k is expensive for a 50cc basic scooter that's probably worth 1-2k overseas, but at the same time 4k isn't a great deal of money either.

I'm tossing up between something like the tgb bullet for 3.2k which is cheaper, faster and more practical or the zoomer for 4k slow and expensive. For me i'll probably ride it once a month if that, and i prefer the looks of the zoomer over a normal scooter, simple as that. Even my zx2r is cheaper and faster than the zoomer.

you do realise ur on a car forum. People on here spend money on all sorts of random car stuff. sound systems, bodykits, suspensions, rims etc. I'm sure most of have friends who are not interested in cars & would be like wtf, what did spending $$$ achieve. just because something isn't to your taste doesn't mean it's shit.

yes - $4k zoomer is definitely overprice but there are still good reasons why ppl actually buy it. *to make it cool, the mods will probably make the total price more like $6-8k so even more overpriced :(

it's almost the same as the LF-A, why would anyone pay that much for it :)... cause they can and probably just wants to own something unique.

Can I please ask, how many of you giving the big ups to these things have ridden a scooter any extended distance?
Even interurban distances?

Because they really do suck hardcore. Which you'd know if you had some experience and weren't just looking at the pretty pictures and leaping at the rumbling 50cc bandwagon because they look cool and you can buy obscure hotup parts.

A $2500 15 year old CB250N would be a better riding experience every day of the week.

keungleung
25-06-10, 12:26 AM

I am glad to see that there is a lot of interest in the Honda Ruckus down under. We are MotoIQ.com, a USA based web magazine that does a lot of compact cars stuff. We noticed a lot of referral traffic from here so we decided to check it out!

Google lead us to this thread and here we are.

We happen to have a project Honda Ruckus that we have extensivly modded with the help of our sponsers and we belive we have the fastest Ruckus with the 50cc GET Honda engine in the world. We can hit 59 mph and can beat many an engine swapped Ruck.

We also managed to get 50 mph out of our project bike with just bolt on's and tuning. No bottom end mods at all. Our mods make the Ruck quite a pleasent urban commuter, from a piss slow boring machine.

http://www.motoiq.com/projects/project_honda_ruckus.aspx

Check our build and check out our links for suppliers of parts for the Ruckus.

Also check out MotoIQ.com, I am pretty sure most of you will love it, plenty of hardcore tech and builds!

http://www.motoiq.com/home.aspx

We look forward to your visiting! Hope you find our Ruckus build informative.

Unfortunately, in NSW you need a bike license even if it's a 50cc, although there is a "scooter license" that restricts you to automatics up to 160cc in exchange for not needing to do the pre-provisional course. Also, if you do the pre-provisional course and pass your riding test in an automatic scooter you're restricted to automatics until you get your full license, at which point you're free to swap your Zoomer for a CBR1000RR.

Also, I learned from experience that if you do your pre-P's/riding test in a semi-automatic such as the Honda Cub or the CT110 (Postie), you won't get an automatic provisional restriction.

Yeh I've got the GY Ruckus,

JiaJue GY motor, which is a 1P57QMJ motor, but the head is a lot bigger compared to dudes in states which makes a few hassles.
OKO 30mm slide throttle
RRGS drag forks
RRGS front disc and 4spot caliper
cnc levers and brake cylinder
YSS rear shock
12x4 front, 12x8 rear
lowered seat
drag handle bar
NCY pegs, sidestand
some china performance pipe, racing coil and cdi.
I wanted it to retain a lot of the look of the standard ruckus, so kept the standard lights and floor, chopped a hole in it for the carb to poke through. Kept the standard front mudguard, and re-moulded a piaggio rear guard to suit.

Rubbish phone photos

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk114/madgarbage/scoot/brp1_zpsda3d91e4.jpg
http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk114/madgarbage/scoot/brp2_zps108e96e7.jpg
http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk114/madgarbage/scoot/IMG_0674s.jpg

Its a fairly easy swap really, way easier than car engine swaps, the only issues I had was remembering that unlike a motorbike, the cables are pretty tightly packed on low bars and with standard controls the throttle cable is really easy to bind when trying to route through/into battery box. And while the slide carb is lovely when it works, the angle it sits on, creates havoc with the float level. Fine line between running the carb dry and overfuelling out the bowl overflow. Getting a wedge shaped manifold plate made up to change that. Will change the pipe to something nicer and convert to rear disc, but thats about it for the short term.

If you're planning on actually using the thing to commute to work or go actually go places solo then throwing in a 150cc GY motor is worth it. Transforms the thing so you're no longer at WOT just trying to hold 60kmh, you can now plug along at 60 with the throttle barely rolled on, hills arent a problem and you got punch to overtake or whatever. But if you're just riding the ruckus within a group with a bunch of mates every so often, I'd honestly keep the stock 50, as they're a lot of fun like that.

Any Q's on swap just hit me up on PM

Will do mate. !
Writing this from my phone in a motel at Scone, after what Bill & Ted would call a 'Most Excellent Adventure'.
Picked her up lunchtime today from Jason at Zoku, after a spur of the moment decision to drive from Toowoomba, QLD to Rockdale, Sydney
Left at approx 10 pm last night, packing a carton of 500 mL energy drinks, and driving non stop, apart from bio breaks and swapping driving duties with the wife, arriving at his new shop at approx 10am and having a power kip tip the agreed time to meet of midday
Went thru his amazing collection, of which at least 6 or 7 were Ruckus/Zoomer in various stages of undress
Fell in love with his white 2010 injected model, with the lowered seat rack already fitted
Threw the agreed amount to him, kicked tyres, and some manly tractor talk, then left, arriving at Scone at approx 6 pm tonight
Now 2 things need to be said at this point
1. Jason is one of the nicest, helpful guys I have ever met. Really went above and beyond the 'call of duty'
2. If you're after one, get onto him ASAP, as these may be his last, as the cost of buying them, as a small operator, servicing and compliancing these to aust stds, then having to justify the 3-4k cost to potential buyers, myself included, is a bit much

Will up a pic when I can, as my phone went flat during the day, no pics, and is on charger now, in the motel
Will link the for sale pic here to help

From the Tokyo Motorcycle Show 2013 last week - not actually a Zoomer but (arguably) better:

Honda CC110 (Prototype #3) - essentially an updated CT110 with double-auto-clutch 4-speed and fuel injection.

Apparently there's a good chance it'll go on sale, hope we (or better, Australia Post) get them!

Has anyone imported one of these themselves? Curious how different it would be to importing a car? i.e./do they require container or can they go on a normal roll on roll off ship?

tofu86
03-06-13, 11:05 PM
i'm assuming as a personal import you have to own it in japan for 1 year..?

BigWillieStyles
23-06-13, 12:43 AM
I have been looking at these for a while, the older ones are carb fed while the newer ones are fuel injected. Would the fuel injected ones be easier to modify as they could adjust to minor a/f changes?

i'm assuming as a personal import you have to own it in japan for 1 year..?

Nah, they have become elligible for import under SEVS i believe.

Theres "kitaco" units that control/adjust fuel maps and ignition. Have a look for them on yahoo japan and/or google search. Its interesting to know what can be done.
One is called i-map and the other is called cdi controller i think

Otobai in Melbourne is also bringing these in now. Says on their website that they expect a shipment soon and that they can comply.

While visiting family, I dropped in on Otobai in Melbourne, they had about half a dozen Zoomers on the premises which were already sold to new owners. They are a wholesaler, however mostly do private imports and compliance on Zoomers. They did have one green one available. They also told me that if I wanted something in particular, a black one for instance, to let them know and they would import one with their next container.

Not a Zoomer, but Australia Post's new ride is here - the new Honda Super Cub 110, with electric start, PGM-FI fuel injection, dual autoclutch and more carrying capacity. Fitted with the exposed handlebars, headlight and short fender from the CC110 as previewed at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show earlier this year. Do want!
