In what feels like an eternity ago I contacted Brendan Underwood after reading an article on "How to buy Godzilla" in SPEED magazine (RIP). The article featured Brendan’s immaculate R32 GT-R V-Spec. I hunted him down and asked him a billion and one questions about R32 GT-R's, bought some parts from him and over time we became mates over MSN. Silbeer, his latest project, started in 2004 and has won Auto Salon show awards, a feature in UK Banzai magazine and cover car of Fast Fours magazine.

Justin Fox: I’m pretty sure I remember reading an article in SPEED magazine and your GT-R was featured in it.

Brendan Underwood: Yep. Had my almost showroom condition R32 GT-R V-spec (http://www.ipixel.com.au/vspec32/gallery/) in there. I miss that car.

JF: That's the one. That was an inspiration to me, big time. What happened to the car?

BU: I was way overstretched financially on it so we had to sell it. It went to a good home in Melbourne where the owner did a few more choice Nismo branded modifications I believe.

JF: I do remember you buying another R32 GT-R not too long after. I remember it had ridiculous offset. Maybe the first GT-R I had ever seen in Australia (on SAU (http://www.skylinesaustralia.com)at least) to go so wide.

BU: When I sold it I had a nice Black Silvia (http://www.ipixel.com.au/temp/black-silvia) lined up. I sourced it through C-Red where I purchased the V-spec. At the time we had a Camry wagon as well, great car, V6 with 17" rims to boot, somehow I got this crazy idea to sell the Camry and buy the Maroon R32 GT-R (http://www.ipixel.com.au/temp/p1-qf-r32gtr). It was a good price, but soon after getting it the bottom end let loose. When we opened it up, it had definitely been whipped bad.

My wife used the Black Silvia as her daily, and I borrowed my Dad's 180B SSS while we rebuilt the GT-R engine.

JF: Care to share what happened to this maroon GT-R?

BU: To cut a long story short, after rebuilding the engine a second time (!), sorting out the suspension with a Whiteline kit and dropping some killer-b's (Brembo's) into the mix, the day I finished getting it tuned was it's last day on earth. Being a little overzealous at the time I mounted a kerb and went under the low bow of a tree completely squashing the passenger side of the turret. RIP GT-R.

JF: that must have been painful, especially after all that work.

BU: It was. I was lucky my wife didn't castrate me. I think she saw it coming at some point. After that incident I really had to take a relook on my driving habits.

JF: So how long was it between the incident and the Silbeer project?

BU: About a month! I was already eyeing up the possibility of a Silvia build, because I really enjoyed the chuck-ability of my black one.

JF: Charles from Auto Salon would definitely classify you as being one of those dying breed of modifiers. With Silbeer you've gone all out but you never did that with the other cars. You also seemed to have time on your hands, from 2004-2009, that’s a long build! How do you explain the motivation behind a build such as Silbeer?

BU: Yes August 2004 to about November 2007. I'd probably have to blame myself being really anal-retentive. Everything needed to be just right, the usual drift treatment wasn't going to cut it for me, so I went the 'factory special' route, something Nismo or Autech might have done. I knew from the get go it needed to be clean and simple.

I think also at the time, I'd just got Foxtel and was watching a lot of Chip Foose and his Overhaulin show which had a big impact on how to do it right.

JF: I know, through our many online conversations over the years, that you’re a busy man. You’ve got how many kids now? You’ve changed jobs a couple of times too. I even read somewhere that your wife was driving the GT-R with the kids in the back! How have you managed to make this all work?

BU: Yep, I now have 3 kids and my wife is very understanding (I suppose that's an understatement). There was bribery involved at a couple of points in the build. Diamond rings, other assorted jewellery items.

JF: You also have a relationship with C-Red (http://www.c-red.com.au), what’s the situation there?

BU: Well I bought 3 cars off of them. Jeff Ash was the owner at the time and we have become very close friends. We collaborate on ideas all the time. I was also C-Red’s in-house designer, refreshing the C-Red brand and doing the website among other things in exchange for C-Red’s help on the build where necessary.

JF: I've not met Jeff but have had chats with him online, and seen pics of him in Japan at Tokyo Auto Salon many years ago. He's way into JDM culture. Did he perhaps influence you as well or were you already a JDM nut?

BU: For sure there was definitely some influence from Jeff, we have similar tastes, less is more.

JF: Amen to that. Any parting words Brendan? Silbeer: Where to from here?

BU: After a great day at the track up at Barbagallo, coming down into the final corner at 190km/h, the clutch went to the floor. Something had let go (it felt like the pivot release point, a weak point in the SR gearbox). Silbeer was trucked back to the workshop. If you read my blog earlier this year, a head replacement had been on the cards for sometime due to tuning problems on an over serviced head. The engine and gearbox are now out of the car.

As the head is going to be off I'm going to refresh the bottom end too. Currently I'm only running stock Z32 (VG30) pistons, so I'm almost at the decision to go for some forged pistons and have the bottom end blueprinted and race-prepped again, maybe some slightly higher compression pistons too to try and get back some of the renowned SR20 low-end torque.

When I popped the hood after the clutch broke, there was also an even coating of oil over the drivers side of the engine bay, we think the oil filter sandwich block seal may have failed, so I'll be putting on of Tomei's sandwich blocks on that bolts to the side of the block, rather than using the centre threaded bolt.

While on the track that day, temps on the short track were manageable, but on the long track where you're at WOT about 80% of the track the temps were getting a little hot. Even with the big radiator and oil cooler. This could be a number of things, but I'll start by fitting up a standard engine undertray as that could have an affect on the cooling system.

Once we've redone the engine it's really time to get it out there again. I've been a little slack on track time since completing it mainly due to the problems with tuning and the fact I couldn't wring its neck properly without it crapping out on each gear change. Looking forward to this next version for sure. Sillbeer v1.5?!

this car is immaculate. You really need to see the undercarriage pics to see how much work went into it

Totally right, Anth. The issue of Fast Fours with this on the cover is probably the only issue I've ever bought. Everything that's been done to the car just enhances the original product, nothing tries to reinvent it.

Makes it look super clean and gives an out of the factory feel.

I absolutely love the attention to detail and having spent hours reading over your blog in the past, your dedication to perfection.

You've built something to be VERY proud of. Your Silbeer project will definately be the bar I aim for when I very soon start my next Silvia build, albiet in later model format.

Congratulations...

Many thanks for the kinds words coming through. Having used it for my daily driver for over year, you kind of get a little nonchalant about the details...until you get feedback like this. Really looking forward to the next phase of her progression.

Hmmm.. sounds like JDM Style Tuning to me.
I just look at this and think, wow, you never see S13's of that standard. Not around these parts.
Not that there's anything wrong with a pig drifter of course. Just strange that this seems like 'something different' for this car.

Brendan, weren't you looking for a Hako? Did that eventuate?

It's still a possibility, but I need to have somewhere to build it first and doing it at the workshop again would definitely not fly with the Mrs and kids. So until I have my own garage/workshop...it's in an indefinite holding pattern.

Um, I don't think they are. Pretty much perpendicular.

When it went in for an alignment with John Fowler at wheels world, he was really surprised with how stiff the car was. He usually does alignment on high end cars (Porsches et al) and was very pleased with this one. He said the height was a good compromise for a car to be used on street (mostly) and track (occasionally).

lol i dont think you mean perpendicular.... parallel maybe?
if so that is the perfect height for your car - meaning that the centre of gravity is balanced, hence why it would handle so well

sillbeer
29-09-09, 10:27 AM
Perpendicular to the wheel, so yeah parallel to the ground...sorry. I was originally going to run Ikeya Formula Lower Control Arms front and rear, but after trying to get a base geometry set, I gave up on them. For my mainly street use they would have been overkill. The stock/Nismo front/rear LCA's work fine and if I really need to change anything down the track if I go lower, I can get some of those Moonface Racing (MFR) Roll centre adjusters.

Awesome car. Such a shame more S13s don't follow the lead of this car.

sillbeer
29-09-09, 07:00 PM
Thanks Babs. There's plenty I might have done differently now in hindsight, but that's mainly in the early prep of the car - things like soda blasting the shell to start with. But hindsight can be a bitch like that.

Cars look better low :) Also remember that Speedhunters is full of JDM fanboys and SoCal people, so lowness is a way of life.

What is it with people being obsessed about having perfect geometry and high performance... especially on the street!

If we were being sensible we would all have stock Hybrid Estima vans :)

edit: The beauty of it is that nobody would have their car the same as yours, so it means that your car is REALLY your car. Within a few seconds of looking it is easy to understand the thinking behind almost any modified car. Most cars are just a project with a goal that has yet to be reached. Others are finished with the compromises that real life imposes. On internet we all have infinity dollars and no police so we can be as silly as we like with mods.

Just another admirer of this amazing build. You've built something unique, tasteful, and totally personalised. As people have said, it's a shame there aren't more S13's like this one!

With all the dough that's gone into it, i'm sure people have mentioned what you could have bought instead, but i'm glad we're not all the same, or builds like this wouldn't happen.

Thanks for sharing.

sillbeer

I need to share more. I have 5mths of pics from when it finished at the track to the engine sitting in bits. Currently getting the engine rebuilt...hindsight is an amazing thing. Doing it right with ACL bearings and 9.0:1 forged pistons. Will be sure to update here when there's a new post up.

Oh, and thanks.

D1 body kit may be??

nebuchernezzer
08-12-09, 03:10 PM
^ What?

Amazing attention to detail, and the body styling suits my tastes. If it was mine it'd have been lower but it's not mine so all good :).

sillbeer
08-12-09, 03:12 PM
Erm, no. The standard aero kit stays. This is only a mechanical change, no cosmetics. Although I did custom order the Ross Tuffbond Harmonic Balancer in red...it's a piece of art.

sillbeer
08-12-09, 03:15 PM
Thnx Nebs. I'd have it lower too, but a red import Silvia with wide body and 10.5" rears already attracts attention from the po po, so height has been set as to not make them look too close. Plus at this height, I really have nothing to worry about in regards to daily road obstructions. If i was to go D1 kit and stay within the realms of non-fuzz attraction it would have to be set even higher. The constant worry of whether or not I'm going to get a work order every time I spot the boys in blue is something I can do without.

nebuchernezzer
08-12-09, 03:44 PM
Yeah, I've been quite lucky with mine, I had to put some effort into tucking the exhaust up high to maintain ground clearance but with the OEM kit it doesn't look SUPER low anyways.
So although mine is below legal height i've been pulled over by RBT with no problems.
The OEM kit is good in that it makes the car look nice without lowering the bodywork far (hardly any!) at all.

sillbeer
08-12-09, 03:48 PM
Yah, that's one of the problems of going with a kit that goes much lower than the chassis itself. At least with a stock kit you can go lower without the kit itself being in jeopardy.

You can get the rear pods as reproductions easily in Japan, I used to sell them to people in Oz fairly often.
Another alternative to the aero front bumper is getting the OEM optional front lip like my car is. It's possibly rarer than the Aero bumper but once again they make FRP reproductions of it in Japan (used to juuuuust be able to squeeze one into EMS postage haha).
The side skirts are of course easy as pie to get hold of.

Thanks for that. In all the excitement I forgot to mention how good it was to drive! In one word...brilliant. The handling setup was nice and sharp, with good turn in but with so much grip in the rear I had to be on the ball ready to catch it. The brakes never had a problem all day with the killer B's performing flawlessly. The only downside was the engine dropping a cylinder or two if I took it too close to redline and taking a good 3-4 seconds to clear up again, thus the reason for the head change. Needless to say I had a grin on my mug for a week afterwards even with the release pivot failure.

This is an epic car, I first saw it years ago, and am still in awe of how incredible the execution is.

Thanks again all. Have made recent updates to the Blog too, both visually, functionality and a little more content. Still trying to get time to post up my pics from World Time Attack Challenge last year.

They were some great pics. Still need to convert them to wallpapers, they were kind enough to send me the original assets from article.

On internet we all have infinity dollars and no police so we can be as silly as we like with mods.

you good sir, have hit the nail right on the head.
