OK if you've read this thread:
http://forum.jdmstyletuning.com/showthread.php?t=1937

You'd know that I ran out and bought a Jazz. Well I picked it up today off Phillip from Larke Hoskins Honda in Roseberry. I got a free Honda umbrella (yay).

I didn't have time to talk to the lady who was trying to zap my wallet for things I didn't really need so I bolted out of there. The car was waiting for me in the wash bay and first thing I noticed was how easy the manual is to drive. Lifting my foot just slightly off the depressed clutch pedal made the car start moving forwards. Obviously designed so that even the worst manual driver couldn't stall it!

Off to JDMyard I go then to pick up some coilovers. Here's a few pics parked outside JDMyard:

http://temp.australianinfront.com.au/jazz/jazz1.jpg
Wow so clean.

http://temp.australianinfront.com.au/jazz/jazz2.jpg
Pumped guards lol.

http://temp.australianinfront.com.au/jazz/jazz3.jpg
So high off the new car fumes... I feel great.

OK so then I load up the goods (after loading up my stomach on McDonalds AND after the boss (Zi) taking the car for a drive around the block (so easy he says!) and I am off to IS Motor Racing in Rockdale. I get there only find this black S15 which wiped the smile (which the new car fumes was giving me) right off my face. :( To think that I was closing in on a deal on a black S15 only a few days ago, in black too. This pretty much broke my heart. I sat there and looked at the S15, then the Jazz... then the S15, then the S15 again. :( :( :( Regret so early? Ah fucking shit! LOL.

http://temp.australianinfront.com.au/jazz/jazz4.jpg
Which one would you take?! :(

http://temp.australianinfront.com.au/jazz/jazz5.jpg
OK well fuck, let's get back to reality. Here's some stuff I had in the boot.
- J's Racing C-Pillar bar from JDM CONCEPT
- Cusco lower tie bar from JDM CONCEPT
- Buddy Club N+ coilovers from JDMyard

http://temp.australianinfront.com.au/jazz/jazz6.jpg
In goes the C-Pillar bar.

http://temp.australianinfront.com.au/jazz/jazz7.jpg
And up on the hoist for the Cusco lower arm bar.

http://temp.australianinfront.com.au/jazz/jazz8.jpg
And oops Chris at ISMR had a Spoon front strut brace in stock and it found it's way onto the car.

Coilovers aren't on yet, will be on ASAP.

UPDATE: 7/4/07

Out with the old.

http://temp.australianinfront.com.au/jazz/hks_intake.jpg
In with the new.

OK coilovers are still not on, waiting for them from Japan (I had previously ordered the wrong set). CAN'T WAIT TO DUMP IT!!!

A few more little things:
- Mugen visors (great for opening windows for fresh air in the rain).
- Buddy Club P1 Racing QF light weight forged rims (custom painted black).
- GD3 plates (I couldn't help myself).
- HKS intake

van
08-03-07, 10:13 PM
I'd get the S15, but then I've already got a daily driver. You've got a far madder car in the GT-R, you don't need an S15! Be sensible, ya jackass ;). The Jazz was the right choice!

Now get some rims on that sucker!

LOL guys. S15 though S15! I feel a little emotional... like I want to cry. LOL. It's ok. I know I know. I've got the GT-R and I bought this to save on fuel, to get from A-B, to not attract Police attention, to carry big shit around, to save on insurance etc etc. sigh. lol.

Even the ricer in me was detesting... but what's done is done and the Spoon sock is on (the other reservoir is so small on a Jazz you can't even use the other sock so I'm saving for when I hit the clubs lol!).

15-03-07, 10:41 PM
nice choice dude !

i've been too lazy to drive my s15 lately so everytime i go out with my gf i drive her ECHO.

makes me want an echo so badly cause their so easy to drive as a daily, and dont have to be scared of parking and scraping etc etc

we all know the s15 is nicer then a jazz, but what's the point of having a s15 when u know u just wanna jump into the GTR instead !!

Jing
16-03-07, 12:35 AM
ignore justin, he is just whinging, he knows whats best for him but he keeps whinging. he cant help it that he has been spotted with a flower on the back of his car on the m5 :surprised:

Justin Fox
10-04-07, 09:47 PM
Fair call Shonen.

PS: Funny... a K20 conversion has crossed my mind. Only because the Jazz has no torque at all lol. But I am having fun out there in the car. The coilovers will be amazing. I can't wait.

Justin Fox
10-04-07, 09:49 PM
PPS: The Buddy Club QF's are so much lighter than the stock rims that I get wheel spin in the wet in 1st gear at about 6000rpm. Didn't used to get wheel spin at all lol.

Won't be too much of a daily driver if you are going K20 :)

Are you looking at gutting the thing and shedding it of some weight?

Justin Fox
10-04-07, 10:19 PM
Nah just joking there guys it's a daily driver and it'll stay that way.

IcemaN
10-04-07, 10:19 PM
a k20 will make it a more plesant daily driver:)
but shedding weight, is against the daily driver rule hehe

Justin Fox
04-06-07, 01:54 AM
OK for sure I am going to get flamed for this... but hear me out before you flame.

After putting on a short ram intake on the Jazz... I was truly dissapointed that it made hardly ANY extra noise at all. I suppose the car has been designed to be extra quiet and super efficient. The tiny engine doesn't help.

So it got me thinking about the exhaust system. The muffler is there to do just that right? Muffle the sound. I decided to take it off, axle back. 2 bolts and I was done. I started the car up, nice! Some sound! I went for a drive and wow, it's 100% perfect!

MOST cars you'd have a ridiculously LOUD result but with the Honda Jazz it's 100% perfect. Way under 90dB and it actually feels better too, definitely feels more free revving.

I've done more research and it's looking like more and more people are doing it on the Jazz. Instead of paying $1000.00 for a fancy cat-back there are a few people taking off the axle back (after the resonator which I would say is there to reduce a lot of drone) and then getting a muffler shop to install a straight through pipe with a flange.

Here's some movie clips of how it sounds:
http://media.putfile.com/CIMG2740

Video inside the car:

Hens
04-06-07, 02:20 AM
yeh justin
i did that with my mirage after i fitted my rear swaybar my custom catback didnt fit.
my system had a flange at the axel so i removed the axel and drove around for a week before i could get the exhaust redone.

it was very free revving and damn loud.
i have a hotdog resonator after the cat.

i might just have to get a axel back straight pipe before the next track day.
hehe

I think it'll look a bit better even lower. As it is now it's perfectly balanced. I want to drop it front and back another inch or 2, should still be plenty of clearance on speed humps etc, the front bar is sitting pretty damn high off the ground still as it is now.

Im gonna be hypocritcal and say its not low enuf still :P The front should be sitting at the top of the front guard, and the rear tucking a finger or two of tyre :)

Otherwise .... i think the tyres need white lettering, would look tuff! :)

Guys it's going to be slammed A LOT more I promise promise promise. This is the height I want it at:

http://www.jtuned.com/media/gallery%2Farticles%2FHonda%20Fit%20Spoon%2F004.jpg

I know the front is a little higher but that's 100% BALANCED for the Jazz. I will keep it that way rather than lowering the front to suit the back just for looks.

Jazzle yes the guards are completely rolled to the max.

Deviliss: Check the Carbing site (we plugged it in the JDMST blog recently). See if they make a dead pedal for your car (I think they do).

And here's my old skool cool N1 style muffler made by "Author" (originally for EG Civic) who are loooong gone I assume.

OK just installed a few more mods:

http://www.spoonsports.us/catalog/civic/intake/019_01.jpg
Spoon larger throttle body.

http://www.aj-racing.com/catalog/files/t_1327_01.jpg
Spoon Engine Torque Damper. Usually I think these are rice (took one off the GT-R) but the Jazz's engine moves a hell of a lot so this should actually work!

http://www.aj-racing.com/catalog/files/t_1270.jpg
J's Racing Roll Centre Adjuster. Since my car's a lot lower, this adjusts the roll centre back up thus improving handling. Check the diagrams below:

http://www.jsracing.co.jp/js3/img/rollcenteradj/FIG1.jpg
Stock.

http://www.jsracing.co.jp/js3/img/rollcenteradj/FIG2.jpg
Lowered.

Pics of it a few pages back, now lowered a little, nothing drastic (yet!).

Yes the plan always was for me to keep the car stock... but hey I am into car modifying so it was pretty much IMPOSSIBLE for me to leave it alone. I think I would modify ANY car I owned no matter how shit it was :)

The GT-R is so close to being "finished". It's awesome. Westside has just finished making me a custom battery tray (so sexy) and Indy's moving the battery to the boot for me as well as installing 4 massive white face Defi gauges on a carbon fibre blank sheet (thanks to Peter from Bodyform). Then off to Danny (Cyber Motorsports) to get a hardcore inside, outside, engine bay detail), off for a shoot, then it's track time!!!

iced - difference in sound that's for sure both at idle and low speeds, feels like there's more mid range but in all honesty it's not much difference. Was a simple bolt on which perhaps suggests that it's not as hardcore as it could be.

gotta reset the ECU and let it learn all over again though

Davf
23-06-07, 07:42 PM
There is only so much air the head/valves will let in, so i wouldn't expect a huge difference in peak power. The intake mod would've done more of a difference as far as mid range performance goes. ECU reset wouldnt hurt.

Out of interest, what difference in sound did your 'old school' muffler make compared to no muffler?

Justin Fox
23-06-07, 07:48 PM
I've never been a believer in re-setting the ECU. Let's start a new thread on this. Posting now.

Now this is really interesting. I tried the Buddy club axle back too so I have a little bit to report here.

Without the muffler at all the car has a really nice raspy note up top. Putting on both the Buddy club cat back as well as this old skool N1 style canon deleted this raspy note.

The Buddy club axle back was quieter than not having a muffler. It was also a lot deeper in tone (bass/more drone).

This old skool muffler somehow seems louder than not having a muffler on, very strange. It's quiet when cold but gets louder the hotter it gets!

So ... of the three, which would be your choice in terms of noise level, the sound it actually makes, and power delivery throughout the rev range?

Buddy Club VS Oldskool N1 Style Muff VS Nothing from axel back.

Im gonna take the rear axel back off the wagon next weekend to see how it goes for a laugh.

Sp33dY: I preferred no muffler at all. Sounded the best and most light weight :) I suggest you do it for an idea of what a straight through axle back would sound like as all 3 options sound fairly similar.

nice daily man.. spread some of your money around. Does it feel good waking up to two hot modified cars in your garage? eheh

I hate posts like these (I see them in other threads too). Nothing against you personally dude but it's not like I've got all the money in the world. I sure as hell would not have bought a Jazz if I had enough cash to keep the EVO running as a daily (was way too ridiculous on fuel). If I had more cash I'd be driving something other than a Jazz. A nice R34 GT-R will still cost $70k+ A new Mazda RX-8 is $50k+ A new 350Z is $67K... you get my point surely but please don't hate the player.

The fact is that the Jazz is a fairly cheap car and a fun car to modify. For example, an S2K would be a lot more expensive to modify than a Jazz.

OK just some figures on weight savings:

-------------------------------------------------------------

- Stock wheels: 7.7kg/wheel x 4 = 30.8kgs
- Buddy club QF: 4.6kgs/wheel x 4 = 18.6kgs
= Weight saving of 12.2kgs (unsprung weight FTW!).

- Rear magic system seats = 30kgs
- Spare wheel + tyre = 15kgs
- Rear spare wheel floor cover/panel = 4kgs
- Rear sliding parcel tray/luggage cover = 2kgs
- Tool kit = 2kgs
- Rear floor mats = 1kg

TOTAL: 66.2kgs!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------

Some more heavy stuff removed/replaced:
Axle back stock exhaust (8kgs)
Stock Airbox (2.7kgs)
Stock suspension (20kgs)

On the cards:
Bucket seats to replace front seats
Headers
Titanium cat-back
Lightened pulley
Lightened battery

:P hahaha I laugh at myself. Honest.

New mugen short shifter installed today. Easy job, took me 45 minutes. Shift throw felt amazingly tough and notchy when car was cold but after sriving it around all day today it's feels normal again. Not as hardcore as the TRD short shifter I had on the 86, nothing like it, but still... it makes an already decent shift better so I'm happy.
