This is my ST184R Celica.

When i first bought it nearly 4 years ago, it was a basically stock ST184, with only wheels, a cat back exhaust, and a Pioneer CD player.

The first thing I did when i got it home, was strip the stereo from my wrecked SA63 Celica and put it in, aside from that stereo and a pod filter, it basically stayed the same right up until mid 2009... When, after looking around on CelicaTech and 6gc.net, i got the idea in my head that I could turbo it.

Now, the most common way of turbo-ing an ST184 is to simply swap a 3S-GTE from a GT4 celica, MR2, etc in to the car... but I felt like being different.

I decided I would try what a lot of guys in the USA have done... turbo the 5S-FE that is in the car already... Below is a basic list of the parts i used to do this;

STAGE II in progress
-Full rebuild (got bearings, rings, gasket kit)
-3S-GE Head - purchased
-New Front Suspension
-New Brakes
-New Clutch

Parts used;

CT26 Turbo
3SGTE Exhaust Manifold
3SGTE Dump Pipe
GT4 Celica exhaust flange (to make an exhaust to fit)
K&N GT4 Pod filter
2in Aluminium intercooler piping kit + Silicone Joiners
No brand 26x6x3 intercooler
HKS SSQV Blow off Valve
Greddy Emanage Blue
Blitz MSTT turbo timer
Denso 360cc high impedance injectors.
Walbro 255lph fuel pump
VDO Oil T-piece
heat shielded rubber coolant/water lines
Speco Boost Gauge
Zeitronix WBO2 Controller
Bosch WBO2 Sensor
Zeitronix LCD Display (Boost, EGT, AFR, etc)

The car is currently running and has a pretty safe/basic street tune in it @ 7psi

I have done a few exterior modifications to the car since I purchased it;

Exterior
GT4 Front Bar
GT4 Fog Lights
GT4 Bonnet
de-spoilered
flat-black rattle can paint job :D
17x7 ROH Boost-R wheels

Below are some pictures of the car how it is right now;

Hey bud,
Have you got any spare 360cc injectors with the denso connectors?
What are the 440cc injectors out off, any part number numbers off them?

Cheers
Henry

I could probably get some 360c's for you.

the 440cc's are from a supra i believe, they are low-impedance.

I will have to look this arvo to get a PN

nice work, what modifications are you going to need to put the head on the 5s block, is it just bolting it all together?

It was already turbo man, has been for about 6 months.

In total i have spent less than $2000 on it, that includes the new bits going in to the rebuild.

ring dramas;

So unbeknown to me, toyota decided for some reason that they wanted to make two different pistons for the 5S-FE

One has a 4mm Oil ring, whereas the other has a 2.8mm oil ring. Toyota also do not tell you which years had which ring.

If you go to repco, bursons, autobarn, etc and try and order rings for a 5S-FE you will end up with the 4mm ones, that is the only listing they have....

My pistons had the 2.8mm oil rings... I had already purchased the 4mm oil rings (not knowing any of this)

Anyway, after calling three different repco's, and autobarn and two bursons I finally found a place that could source me the right rings (Repco Albion)

$150 later (they only come in chrome, not cast) I have a set....

So in total I spent about $250 on rings... FAIL.

MEGA FAIL

put the rings in, went to push the pistons down the bore, one of the rings came loose and scored the fuck outta the bore.

The block is basically useless now. :angry:

So, my options from here are;

1. Buy a new block (~200) and get it machined (~100) = $300
2. Put some new mains in the 3SGTE on my shed floor (that belongs to my housemate and has a spun main) and throw that in. = $free (3SGTE and 5SFE mains are the same part number)

needless to say, I am going with the free option...

Project 5S-GTE is now on hold, I will run the 3S-GTE until I decide what to do with the 5S.

I *should* still be able to bring the celica to sydney... fingers crossed.
