Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but the 4 letter minimum for search is very painful, especially on a car forum where so many acronyms are 3 letters or less. Does it really screw up the forums to make the minimum to 2 characters? If so, how about enabling Google search on the forums? I have seen that on other forums

You can use google to search the forum by adding the "site:" tag in the search bar.

So head to google and punch this in site:forum.jdmstyletuning.com gtr

Yeah that lets me search for 3 letter stuff. But for vip* i then also get viper etc.
Still doesnt help when i was searching for V8...

Its just an inconvenience that could be avoided i think, but thanks Justin for looking into it. I think the Google search idea might be a good one, though i dont know whats involved in making it work (xda-developers.com has it)

Thanks Lowa... That worked great

I even extended that and made my own search "provider" for IE7+...

Then add this to the URL box:

And description JDMST Google search

Searched for V8 nicely :)

Had the same problem trying to search for 'kei' the other day.

Appreciation for the content of this thread.

The minimum letter thing is to save the database from being stressed when building the search index and things like that, so I'm not surprised there's no hack for it.

I agree it's annoying - particularly on a car forum - but it's just one of those things!

There is a hack & you can reduce it to 1 letter if you wish.

You need shell/console access to restart the MySQL service once you add some lines to the my.cnf file. Then there is a setting in Vbulletin Options -> Message Searching Options -> Search Index Minimum Word Length which you can set. From there you gotta rebuild the search indexes which is when your db grows in size. :)

Just create a Google custom search and add it on the search page. Just like on http://forums.overclockers.com.au/

EDIT: Im also not sure if its available in vB3, but in vB4 I have an options page called "Message Searching Options (vBulletin Internal Search)". This allows me to add specific words which I want to add to the search index, even if they are under the letter limit.

I really must hurry up and get VB4 installed on my own space...
