i needed new tires recently and my mate suggested the new michelin precedas. didn't thnk much of micchelin (in terms of street legal tires) but i gave them a go and boy i was impressed! the grip is terrific and there is almost no road noise even when ur pushing it a bit. then i read the article in an issue of autosalon magazine which rated the tire very high so i was happy to have made a good decision.

but i'm still very new to the whole tire thing and how much difference they make so im wondering what u guys recommend for tires? street and track use

The problem is that tyres change every year, the range that is... so it's hard to say which tyres are the best.

In the same year I tried both goodyear's top of the line streets and Bridgstone too. The Potenzas were fantastic, stiffer sidewall but didn't last very long... the Goodyear's were softer, more comfy, quieter and better in the wet.

Since then I've gone for semis for street. I tried T1R's but they were crap on track, in fact I killed them in one track day... great for street/wet conditions but track them and they die.

R888's lasted over 10,000kms on the MX-5 and warm up real quick too, but then again the MX-5 is a light car.

In the end of the day you get what you pay for... never tried Continental Tyres SHIFTY, they sound cheap and nasty though someone correct me if I'm wrong!!!

I'm still a fan of Potenzas though.

I had potenza's also on some rims a while back and was very impressed with them.

If u want some 'fun' tyres ... buy POS-A-TRACTION's ..... yes, they are available from all good Bob Janes for under 70bux each for a 14" on stockies :P

hehehe....

Continentals Tyres are actually great..

I never heard of em till my grandpa told me he like owned the Aussie rights and NZ etc... (he owns TYRES 4 U)

BMW, MERC's, Audi's.... (all the top models aswell) M's,AMG's,RS's... use em....

They are not that well known in aus YET tho... but they are really good.
Worlds fastest road tyre aswell

AND FOR THE CHEAP PART... ummmm for there top brand ur looking at $400 (aprox)[depending on where u buy] a tyre

Choosing the right tyre is pretty hard these days. So much choice. So many confusing features & benefits.

The best tyre is the tyre which fits your aplication.

Rotary.....sounds like you made the right choice .....and thats what matters.

for me.......I'm still longing for the Azenis 615's to come out in a 16" size.
if it hasn't come out by december........looks like i'll have to go back to 15" rimms :? :(

Continental Contisport-contact 2's are very good street tyres(right up there with the best michelins and bridgestones).

As mentioned, the top euro marques tend to use them, and a lot of the new mkV golf gti owners swear by them as well.

They apparently get the holy trinity of wet/dry grip, low noise and durability.
The only thing i'd say against them is they look boring- which matters to some!

hmmm shifty. I wouldn't put continentals on my car. Not the fact that they are bad tires. Everyone I actually asked said they were really good. There's just a little sumthing in my head that only allows me to put japanese parts/tires on my Japanese car. Pretty gay huh.. but that's how I think? :s

Btw I noticed alot of people were running Nankang tires at track the other day. what are they like? Not critisicing or anything, but from memory my mate was using them on his Skyline and said they were bad... I drove the skyline and they feel like a really hard compound tire, and don't grip very well? Also the guys at Bel garage pointed and laughed and mumbled when they saw them on his car. Any insight on those and firestone tires.

One more point I would like to bring up since we are talking about tires. Do semi slicks put alot more strain on your car? As in drivetrain wise? I have been told that they do... but would like to know more.

I think I have kinda convinced myself that street tires are for street, and semi's are for track. Or maybe Yokohama C-drives are crappy tires.

no way man, Semi slicks all the way, if Subaru can put them on their STi's...

just make sure they DOT approved.

just get new rims with street tyres and shove some slicks or semis on your stock rims and drive on ur road tyres 2 the track and change 2 track tyres at the track .... u got space since u took out your rear seats....

wouldn't bother going full slicks shifty. Good point Luc with the Subaru thing. shifty i've had my seats out for agesssss.

sorry haven't been back.
I think the 16" size is 205/40x16

proper R compound semislicks not all that good for city traffic. even on the mountain roads you need to almost constantly be going spastic to keep up to temp.
Street compound with semislick tread pattern is my own personal cup of tea. Gets driven on weekends. 2 or 3 hard corners & they are up to temp. & don't really need warming up in summer weather. :D
Using proper Dot aproved semis for road also kills them very quickly too. Even just driving them to the track & back. But you gotta get there somehow .....

I wonder if Justin gone through tyres as much as he gone through cars?
