14-07-05, 08:00 PM
That is something that i have already thought of a few years ago! A custom keyboard, but somehow no one's selling one at that time!

14-07-05, 08:32 PM
I can see the possibilities, play movies, play side scrolling games and almost anything through that keyboard :D

14-07-05, 08:33 PM
Yeah, it's only a prototype but apparently they've lined up a manufacturer. If it's under AU$400, I'll get one.

14-07-05, 08:47 PM
You are so excused.....thats awesome. I want one baaad.

14-07-05, 11:19 PM

15-07-05, 12:15 AM
Damn right. I can see this keyboard driving interstellar travel.

"It's a nice idea John, but this ship of yours will never make it to Alpha Centauri"
"Don't underestimate this ship, Peter. It' got an Optimus keyboard. Each key is an independent OLED display!"

15-07-05, 03:41 AM

17-07-05, 03:48 PM
Apparently it'll be out by the end of the year, and it'll be around AU$350-450. Expensive, but I'm personally okay with that price. I'll be getting one :D

Garth Ivers
17-07-05, 03:53 PM
van maybe we should go a group buy?
im up for one

17-07-05, 03:59 PM
Oh I'm up for one mate, believe. I think the price is fine. There'd be a lot of work in that keyboard, and asking for less than AU$350-450 would be like asking any of us designers to work for 10 bucks an hour. Me no think so!

17-07-05, 06:54 PM
Thats wicked, I wonder how many profiles they've programmed for it for all the major apps out there. This thing will sell with regular profile updates.

Second issue, how robust are the keys =)

The Russian developers of the Optimus keyboard noted that the Art.Lebedev Studio will begin accepting pre-orders for the Optimus keyboard in December 2006 while the estimated ship date is sometime after next spring. The keyboard’s designer, Artemy Lebedev, has continually delayed the keyboard for a number of different reasons since its official announcement last January. The interesting looking keyboard immediately garnered attention from users because of the keyboard’s ability to allow users to customize every key for a number of different purposes.

The Optimus keyboard and Optimus mini three are both innovative keyboard concepts that have faced long delays that have left possible consumers frustrated. DailyTech posted an article in May that noted that there was no expected launch date for the full-size Optimus OLED keyboard – it looks like the outlook hasn’t gotten any better. However, Lebedev has since dropped the OLED component from the keyboard, instead opting for backlit LCD keys.

While not being able to deliver with the Optimus keyboard, Artemy Lebedev has posted a blog about the Upravlator, the company’s “new keyboard.” With the company’s track record with its previous products, we’re not holding our breath.

Sounds like a bit of a step backwards, to me. They've had to ditch the OLED idea, which is going to result in a lot of heat issues, having 100 small LCD screens sitting next to each other. I'll have to see it to be sure, but at this point right now, I'm not longer particularly excited by this product. Asses.

Hah. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. OLED is way more durable than LCD. Lighter as well. I would NOT buy a keyboard made up with 100+ LCD screens.

I wonder why they had to ditch OLED, I thought I read that it's also cheaper to manufacture than LCD, so that wouldn't be the reason

Before we bring the hate upon the Optimus keyboard, there is a bit of news that came about today. On December 12 Art.Lebedev will be accepting 103 pre-orders for the Optimus keyboard. The keyboards will ship "about May 2007" and will have a price tag of... (are you ready for this?) ... $1,200. Yes. Twelve hundred fucking dollars—pardon my French. It may be a joke by Artemy Lebedev, but regardless of the $1,200 price tag or not, the Optimus keyboard is heading in a downward spiral.

This is what the keys will eventually end up looking like:

Not exactly what we'd been told to expect. And US$1200? That's a little bit more than the "no more expensive than a reasonable modern mobile phone" we'd been lead to believe would be the price.

Wow...they really screwed that one didnt they.

07-12-06, 08:51 AM
ohh well
i just have to wait till the price goes down but for the meantime i can use the next best thing
