Kei Cars & Kei Car Tuning. Define and discuss.

Kei cars, K-cars, or keijidōsha (軽自動車?, lit. "light automobile") (pronounced [keːdʑidoːɕa]), are a Japanese category of small vehicles, including passenger cars, vans, and pick-up trucks designed to exploit local tax and insurance regulations, and in most rural areas are exempted from the requirement to certify that adequate parking is available for the vehicle.

These standards originated in the times following the end of the Second World War, when most Japanese could not afford a full-sized car yet had enough to buy a motorcycle. To promote the growth of the car industry, as well as to offer an alternative delivery method to small business and shop owners, kei car standards were created.

The cars feature yellow licence plates, earning them the name "yellow-plate cars".

Because regulations only restrict physical size, engine displacement and power, manufacturers have introduced many advanced technologies to the class. As a result, kei cars are often available with forced induction engines, automatic and CVT transmissions, front-, rear- and four-wheel drive, hybrid drivetrains, air conditioning, GPS and many other features.

There used to be a guy who brought heaps of these little cars in. He had a paddock and they all looked pretty ratty but damn they were cheap! Does anyone remember him or have any info on whether or not he's still around?

I have probably driven every existing K-car ever build, for the simple reason that I worked at a Suzuki/Daihatsu dealer in japan.was a great experience:D

Here are my all time favorites::cool:

1) The fastest of the fastest:
-Most poular and fastest K-car is still the Alto Works CN21 RS-R, it has the max 64 HP output and weights as much as a PC . .lol

-After that you have the all time rivals : Suzuki Wagon-R RS and the Daihatsu Move RS
- Subaru Vivio with the supercharger
- Honda Today with Beat engine and 5MT
- Suzuki Capuccino
- Honda Beat
- Az-1 Autozam

By the way the Honda City Turbo was not a K-car but had more then 660cc and 64HP, > it was a subcompact hatchback with 100HP , like Nissan March Turbo.

I'm a little hazy on this matter, but they were 4wd also werent they? And with a bit of tweeking capable of a bit more than the 64hp that is the legislated limit for Kei class, so I have been led to believe.

EDIT: Ahh yep... should've read the article JF posted before writing this

You are right on the 4WD, but that version had some lower power output if I remember well, also more heavy. The Alto Works doesn`t really have 64HP only, most on dynas had over 70HP on japanese premium fuel. The engine the way it is is good for 120HP if you change the Turbo and cooling, injection.

ive heard of people getting the N1 Suzuki tuned ECU and it almost doubles the out put of Suzuki's F6A engine. im sure with some breathing mods and exhaust (which you can get off the shelf for just about any kei over there) they can produce a reliable 100hp easy.

most kei motors are capable of producing more power but have been retarded alot from factory to meet the 47kw imposed limit and for fuel consumption.

i just got back a few days ago from Ebisu matsuri and i witnessed one of my 'drifting/car building' goals on track being done by a local. CN21 Alto Works RS.R, AWD, front drive shafts removed (unsure but locked front diff as well maybe? my japanese is very min.) and he was sliding school course with some difficulty but i sware the whole weekend there was nothing cooler than seeing a 660cc kei FR sliding at the track. it made school course (which is reativly small) look like a massive track for him. tiny rims too... 14x6 with 155/55 R14's but it was still poking.

soooo cool! will eventually post some pics of it.

Fact the Mazda AZ1 one was actually produced with the help of Suzuki the motor is the same that you find in the Cappuccino and other Suzuki Kei class cars which is the F6A 12 valve 3 Cylinder Turbo.

Problem with the N1 Ecu is that its not tuneable. You are better of with something like an adaptronic.

I know my car made 48.7rwkw with just a muffler, pod and advanced timing.

There was also a guy in QLD who got an adaptronic with just a dump pipe running 16psi (which a working standard turbo can handle) it about around 60 odd rwkw. Suzuki really had to restrict these motors to meet the requirements...much like the "gentlemen's agreement" for normal cars.

In factory tune, the fwd turbo kei's are usually faster, as the 4wd system adds 10% extr weight. The 4wd versions weren't necessarily developed for added performance, more for snow conditions etc. However, obviously with 200+ hp, 4wd would be an advantage ;) Does it not break gearboxes or driveshafts at that sort of output?
I have an L200 Mira, basic aussie spec thing. Few basics done, but not for speed :P I'd love a trxx. Would prefer it to an alto works.

L80 Handivan (same chassis as the L70 Mira) and an L200 Mira. On the technicality, the L80 isn't a true kei-car since it doesn't conform to the engine capacity limits (846cc for the non-Japanese models. Japanese versions had a 550cc engine either NA or turbocharged) but for all intents and purposes, it is still a kei-car.

Just keep in mind that the older Sherpas are 550cc and are slooooooooow. Usually any kei from 1990 onwards is fine and capable of reaching and maintaining highway speeds. There's also not a lot of support for these in Australia. Finding tyres is nigh on impossible without importing for wheels any bigger than 12 or 13". Not trying to tell you not to get one, but just letting you know what it's like.

Also, there's plenty of VIP kei cars in Japan, so it wouldn't be a first. It probably would be a first in Australia, though.

Welcome to the joys of never being able to find parts. Particularly tyres. Looks pretty clean though, so you'll save a bit in not having to replace everything.

Also, I can't remember if these things have a siamesed intake port, so if you ever want to replace the carb, you can just find a single barrel job from something else and adapt that. If they still have individual intake ports, then find a single 40mm sidedraught. ;)

Where are you getting those? Myself and a few mates have been looking around for 13" tyres that small and 145/70R13 is the smallest available locally. Even then, they're still 1" bigger in rolling diameter than the standard 145/70R12.

Keith 4 Wheels at Springwood in Brisbane are able to get heaps of varying sizes... they weren't the cheapest tho... Bob Jane @ Toombul in Brisbane were the ones that could get me cheap wheels and tyres... if they don't have it they can import it and they're good on prices...

this is at least what they've told me... when it comes time to purchasing and actually putting them on the car it may be a different story, but in theory its sound... other than those 2 places, every other tyre mob i went to hadn't even heard of a subaru sherpa or kei cars...

I got my 13" watanabes on the sherpa now lol... and found a new clutch... turns out the carbie was a side draught too so I've used an adapter, replaced the the air cleaner and air filter set up with a Ram Flo stack filter and I had to cut a hole in the bonnet and put a scoop on to accommodate it... Sherpa's lookin mean as these days...

Yeah, I should be out. I'm not entirely certain about the others, but there will likely be a couple at least. A mate of mine might have his L700 out as well if he gets around to sorting it out.

nice! whered you get em? my mate just got a mira and hes not sure where to get wheels for the mira since it has the unusual stud patterns!

if your mate is keen... i have a pair of 15x6 SSR mesh in 4x110 and a set of 13x6.5 SSR mesh also in 4x110... even have a set of dragways for next to nothing in 4x110.

Does anybody know if the turbo Daihatsu Miras were sold in Australia? I'm pretty sure you would be able to get an exemption to drive one on P plates. hmmmmmmmmm

xsoarerx
21-07-11, 10:36 AM
no they weren't.

your allowed to drive Cappuccino's and turbo mira's according the the P plate laws (well in QLD anyway) but from what i hear P platers are not allowed to drive something with a mod plate right?

so, P platers would have to buy the import ones rather than locally engine swapped or turbo'ed NA engines.

but... i could be wrong.

Would anyone know what size/width wheels would fit a Daihatsu Mira? Maximum would be flush with the guard I guess but anything less is alright. And offset as well. I'm clueless about this :|

ill-minded
22-07-11, 02:59 PM
5.5J +25 is about as big as you can go on standard guards without having to molest them (much). If you want to go wider, just adjust the offsets to keep the amount of poke the same. L200 rear guards are crap for beating out to fit wider wheels, so just keep that in mind. Also remember that tyre selection for kei-cars is almost non-existent.

Meek
23-07-11, 12:34 PM
Thanks for that.

So what would fit better? 13x6.5 +18 or 13x6 +5. Or are both of them not suitable at all?

ill-minded
23-07-11, 01:23 PM
Probably 6.5 +18. You'll need to beat the rear guards out though. How much will depend on tyre size and however low you intend to run. The front guards may need the lip rolled out as well, but it's a lot easier than the rears. The alternative is to cut the rear guards out and weld in some sheetmetal and make your own.

A question for other Mira owners. How many k's are you getting from a full tank on average? I'm getting around 260-280 on 95 unleaded, but that's driving past the empty line, and even then my petrol light doesn't turn on.. Maybe my car leaks petrol... Because I saw an ad for a Mira and the owner said he gets 300+ k's :/

For now, the new motor needs to go in. Once I get it back on the road, it should pique the interest of a few people at the next meet.

Just got my Mira back from the mechanics for a check up after I felt my car lose power and the engine starting to vibrate vigorously on idle. Seems that one of the pistons went... :( Mechanic says it will cost more than a Gbomb to fix.. I'm now deciding on what to do with it.

Would it be worth fixing the engine or replacing the motor with maybe a Sirion engine? I heard they fit without too much trouble. Or sell it for almost nothing as rego runs out soon?

In a nutshell, unless you want the headaches of lots of fabrication woes and shit generally not fitting, the only engine choices are any of the E_ motors (EB, ED, EF, EJ) or if you can find one affordable enough, a JB-JL or JB-DET. Outside of these options, I wouldn't bother. If you want more power than what's available, add turbos (or bigger turbos if they already have one).

The beauty of these cars is that they don't really need a lot of power to be fun.

g
06-10-11, 12:21 AM
i was wondering if a b series honda engine would fit into a L200.

EDIT: which cars are the E_ motors (EB, ED, EF, EJ) and a JB-JL or JB-DET models from?

ill-minded
06-10-11, 12:39 AM
With enough money, you can get anything to fit. Realistically, no, a Honda B series will not fit. There isn't a whole lot of room between the chassis rails in these things. With the standard 3 cylinder and 5 speed box, there's about an inch or less of free space on either side of the motor/box.

EB: 550cc in Japanese L70 - NA and turbo
ED: 850cc in Australian L80 (same as the L70 in all other regards) - NA only
EF: 660cc in all L200 and L500* (also L600 Move) - NA and turbo
EJ: 1000cc in Australian L700 (and base model M100 Sirion) NA only
JB: 4 cylinder 660cc in Japanese L500 and all Copens - Predominantly turbo, but I think there may be NA versions.

*The "Handivan" varieties usually came with the ED instead of the EF.

Big converter and a big turbo, you cant drift the fucken thing. Might as well make do with what you have...
it'd still be more fun with a manual imo, that's part of the fun of having something the size of a shoebox with fuck all hp!

The lack of torque and power gets tiring pretty quickly, even with a manual box.

Ian, you need to spend a day by yourself in my car when its fixed. Just remember how attached I am to it....

Don't get me wrong, I love the manual in my car.. except the 9 times (that's right, gearbox number 10 in there now, yet to turn a wheel) I have replaced the gearbox...
So, if you already have the car, save the money and get on with it.. Put a -10 off a GTR, or a TD04 and a 5,000rpm converter, You can rev the little motors to 9,000rpm. Could be fast and will definitely be different. Think outside the square........

Would anyone know if it's difficult or expensive to change an auto transmission to a manual in a Mira?

I probably have all the bits needed to convert the car to manual, minus the clutch, gearbox and driveshafts, I can put them aside for you?

You will need a complete pedal box, the clutch and speedo cables, the floor shifter and cables, a set of manual driveshafts, a gearbox, clutch, flywheel, You would need to re-wire the reverse light switch and the inhibitor switch also.

I think you should have a go at tricking up the auto, fit a turbo and just up the boost it until it goes good

I've been thinking about the car heaps lately, but I have a silvia to get running and a lancer to sell first :(
If you could take a pic or just to give me the general idea of how/where its mounted that'd be great.
The doors just seem too thin and I can't visualise there being enough space.

I had a 4 door L700 turbo auto (not a Mira Gino) for 2 years when I lived in Japan, was a very good car, if a little slow.. I don't think you could get a whole Gino here, but if you cold get a front cut the bits would fit a local L701..

-manual or auto gearbox?usually Malaysians go to halfcuts in search of thier desired item (new & recon item are highly priced)
-alternatively you can mix gearbox (the gearing) from the other car (daihatsu charade, cuore) as long you know what is engineering:P

any mira turbo owners here?
care to change some information like mods, spareparts etc...??

No one in Malaysia wants to talk about gearbox or drag times. Never heard any times mentioned and no one seems to know what to do to strengthen gearboxes.

My engine is completely stock standard. except for an oil return in the sump, a decent fuel system and a turbo. 195hp and reliable on pump fuel.

efimira
24-03-12, 11:47 PM
I have, but its more of a street car.. I just like getting it on gate on the way to work...
It started as a cheap run about, then within 3 weeks it was turbo and the joke got less and less funny until it was beating my mates WRX and keeping up with GTR's..
I just drive like this most of the time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX0a5aQ6Vsk
Now I just want to finish it off a little more and sell it, once its gone I will be (hopefully) moving to Japan full time..

Basically have a Charade box in it now.. When I get back from Japan I will get custom driveshafts made and re-do turbo manifold and exhaust.

if my mira was a dedicated drag car it would be more "badass"
300hp? Please link me to this car.
Most ive seen is 205hp in japans fastest mira
and 194 (around that) in a suzuki alto

prove me wrong.

What gearboxes would handle 300hp in a mira? Lol

efimira
30-03-12, 10:26 PM
I'm not sure I believe it either, as I said, no Kancil owners/tuners want to show any evidence, or share methods.
300hp? I think horses must be smaller in malaysia, much like the Deer:
Regular deer:
http://images.nationalgeographic.com/wpf/media-live/photos/000/007/cache/white-tailed-deer_756_600x450.jpg
Malaysian Deer:
http://www.malaysia-wildlife-and-nature.com/images/mammal-kancil.jpg
..and still dodging the question. They probably run rubbish times, why wouldn't anyone know?, its not like they are not popular cars in malaysia, most guys have an idea of what inspired them to build their car, or aspects of other cars that helped their creativity.
No one can even mention the best time they have heard of a kancil doing. Maybe they are more worried about putting "jasma" dress up parts in the engine bay to show their mates?

cheers danny!

I love kei cars! They're cute and convenient. They'll probably end up being one of the only options for me too, as fuel prices are skyrocketing at a rate too high for a poor uni student :(

Some of them seem to have quite good tuning potential too.

Use your imagination, the sky is the limit..

You don't need to be doing 200km/h to enjoy them either.. Fun at legal speeds.

the bigger issue with tuning them is the short wheelbase. Twitchy + racecar = fucked.

It's even worse there!!! Bumpy roads get you sideways like no tomorrow. I find it manageable in the dry, but in the wet.... Fuvk no!

Fair enough, pretty snappy then aye. This one on the touge seems to be set up quite nicely, despite being torque-less.

So much easier to drive my crx that is apparently snappy lol :/

And in that video they werent really pushing the little fucker. They drove it like a 'normal' car, ie, they let go of throttle, instant loss of speed. You have to drive these things like the oldschool f1 cars (circa 1930's)*... flat to the floor pretty much ALL the time. Tis scary as all fuck lol.

Most coilovers for 'sports kei' cars end up giving you something like this az-1:

Should see some of the az1/cappuccino/beats that have cages; lifting front wheel under acceleration.. rears under breaking... and then you look inside and theyve got a pastic seat with minimal padding. Crazy i tell thee crazy!!!

must be a cappachino thing.
my mira is fine in the dry. sure if you hit a bump whilst pushing very hard (ive made 6L commos look like idiots) and youre turning shit gets interesting. thats why not everyone drives a tuned kei car
same goes for people who race 250cc bikes. you have to throw them around more than a bigger bike.
you can still push it hard in the rain. it just understeers if you go too far.

6kg springs in the front of something that is a very light MR might be a good reason.

Ok, instead of calling names, take it as free advice from me, upgrade your gearbox before you make more HP.
As I said, over the years lots of kancil owners have asked me on facebook/youtub/forums for advice but none have given any and you are making excuses now too.

Maybe grab a pack of pringles and sit down, ask your mates what they know about it? pretty sure you would have buddies with the same car.

Im no expert, but id assume it was the 51:49 weight ratio coming into play. Stock its set up to understeer quite a bit, but its quite easy to push through that and snap straight into oversteer. Took a while to get used to it, but it hasnt done it since ive changed sussy... mainly coz ive still havent driven it that hard yet :)

6kg springs in the front of something that is a very light MR might be a good reason.

Ive got 6kg front and 4kg rear, and its bareable on melbourne roads. Weight ratio isnt too different between the az1 and the cappa either so id imagine itd be much the same. Garage limit is mainly track based, so guessing their dampers are fairly insane.

I was just saying it in a general sense. I imagine most people would prefer non-twitchy racecars. Sure you could tune it out, but you could also start with a base car that doesnt shift around weight so easily.

Still, using a wheel alignment to get rid of the twichiness inherent of a lightweight vehicle sounds a tad retarded to me. Using a longer and widerbase just makes more sense (to me).

when a big car beats me in a race (too-gay not straight line, thats for people that cant drive) then i will agree with you.

You do understand how inertia works? Less weight=less inertia to "shift weight around"

I have been driving the mira for 3 years and almost 100,000km..
I have never felt this "twitchiness" you speak of. Put the right size tyres (Put a 5" rim and decent 165~175 tyres) on it and some decent shocks it is as good as any other lowered car on the road.
It has been cheaper to modify then most larger cars (as long as you use your imagination.) Leftovers from bigger cars have been useful.

Stock Mira rack is 4 turns, doesn't help, the handling is pretty neutral until 10/10ths, then you can have understeer until christmas..

There is not much lift off oversteer until you lower it onto the bumpstops/fit some hard springs/dampers. Red's Mira is set up a bit lower and a lot harder in the suspension then mine.

because its snap lift off over steer(like a honda), not a walk in the park.

a that's about about what i figured, you guys meant on stiff low suspension unsettling on bumps not doing it to slide the tail around on corners to go faster haha

still zero fucks given about lift off oversteer in fwd, snap or otherwise lol
