hey guys.

with twin plate clutches, are there what's known as silent types and non silent types? you know the metal grind you usually hear with twin plate clutches, is it possible to have a twin plate clutch without that noise? does the noise come in straight away with a new clutch or does it take time to wear in..

thanks

As far as I know, the producers of some twin plate clutches have been able to engineer around that noise. To my knowledge the one's equipped in FPV F6 Typhoons are silent so I assume you can get aftermarket ones that quiet.

I'm not sure why you'd want that though. Personally, I love the bells... You get a kind of knowing nod from other enthusiasts when you rock up at maccas...

ATS makes multi-plate clutches that, like their LSDs, use carbon plates. These are a bit more progressive on pick-up, and are practically silent in operation.

Yeah carbon twin plates are awesome, my next clutch will be an ATS carbon twin.

They hardly shudder at all and almost as easy as a stock clutch to drive.

I always thought that carbon clutches needed to be warmed up before they worked properly, making them impractical for normal road use... But I could be wrong...

Carbon twin plates still rattle, but they are quieter than conventional twin plate clutches.

They are also very, very easy to use, however don't take this as a reason to ride it like a stock clutch. You will wear it out very quickly if you do so (you just won't know it).

Carbon clutches do slip when cold, but its nothing extreme.

I've had mine in (an Exedy twin carbon) for about 1000kms.
