Ok to clarify things this is not to nik the rims. Me and a mate drive a Suzuki swift to work and back its out daily driver shitter. And we have a flat tire. Usually no dramas but it has a lock nut on it and we don’t have the key for the lock nut.

The bolt is deep in the rim and very hard to get to.

I’m thinking the way we could get this fixed is either

1. Drill through the bolt and then try and break it off. (may damage rim)
2. take back end off
3. by far the coolest idea and spray it with liquid nitrogen and then snap the stud.
4. Just smash it off....

Does anybody have any better ideas hahahaha cheers.

(tip of the day when you buy a car make sure u have lock nut)

p.s. the lock nuts are on all four rims only one of them is flat atm but i would idealy like to get all of them off for future.

liquid nitrogen sounds like a cool idea .... but taking back end off sounds OTT!

Of those ideas:
1. Drilling the entire stud and replacing it is by far the most reasonable. New studs won't cost you very much.
2. With the wheel still on? I don't think so.
3. Liquid nitrogen idea is a waste of time, it won't work.
4. Your more likely to bend it and make the job 5 times as hard by "smashing" it than if you just drill it.

Alternatively, and the one I would try first, most lock nuts were mass produced, meaning you can probably by the same locks nuts with the key as well from somewhere. Failing that, I would probably just do an insurance job on the swift and buy another one with four good tyres.

If you got the car from a dealer or if you still have the phone number for the person you bought it from, I would harrass them for the lock nut key. (No harm in trying)

yeh we called the previous owner his answer (i never had to take a wheel off...)

I'm pretty sure that pretty much any tyre shop will have an allen key socket of the right size to take off that wheel.

mostly they take Chisel & hammer to it. in less than 2 min you'll be on your way.

having watched them in action......seems almost pointless having these things

allen key style bolts are nothing special.
all tyre shops carry the key adaptor which would look like a 12mm allen key?

post a pics so we can confirm

Fark...I've got one floating around since the Luce wheels use the allen bolts.

yeh it is a 12MM allen key that isnt the hard part its the lock nut ...

what ever i do this is going to be great fun hahaha

i dont feel like getting the shitter towed to a wheel place and then they say no they cant do it.

im not too worried about damaging the rim they crappy old 17's

i googled it and found this post
I'd use my arc welder to weld a new lug on top of the locknut and then remove it as usual thats all good and well but it would be impossible getting a welding stick inside the whell. FUCK

maybe a oxyacetylene torch

Just grab a socket that is the same size as the other nuts and grab a hammer and hammer it on top of the lock nut. Dont be too brutal with it, be patient and once the socket is firmly locked onto the lock nut you SHOULD be able to undo it if its not on too tight.

Thats how the tyre places do it, ive been in the same situation. When I bought the skyline the previous owner lost the locknut.

Hahaha you werent serious with the liquid nitrogen idea were you ?

Besides I dont think you can get access to liquid nitrogen, unless of course you work in some industry that deals with it (just incase you do :P)

I've lost my lock nuts before.

5 minutes with the right sized socket, mallet, and wrench and they had them all off.

Did it with no damage to the rim as well, but obviuosly the lock nut was a write off. Not a big issue if you've lost the key anyway :)

Yeh you can, just buy it from BOC or CSIRO or Sydney uni, Its cheaper than petrol!!!, only problem is you have to rent a container, unless you can sneak into the senior chem labs where they have it on tap :)

Ive had to do this to my old Charade, lost the lock nut, whipped out the hammer and chisel and the lock nut was off in a couple of minutes.
