Hi All,

My name is Tomi, I’m from Melbourne, Victoria, thought it was about time I posted. Mid last year, after a few years of saving up, I was finally able to afford my dream car - a JDM S15 Silvia. Over the years I'd extensively researched the car and knew exactly what I wanted, so I decided my best option was to import an example.

The car was located in a Narita dealer after many long hours of searching by Ben from J-Spec Imports through auctions, dealers, classifieds etc.. It was in the condition I wanted, had all the options I had specified (along with a few extra's) and was reasonable in terms of price. The car arrived in Australia a few months later, and I had it complied and registered in Victoria by November '06.

Since that time I've been slowly modifying it to suit my tastes, the current modifications include:

So that's about it for the moment. Future mods include fiiting my Vertex Ride widebody kit, Work Meister's, updating some interior aspects and some engine work when it decides to pop :). Comments welcome.

All the nav and stereo work??

The Navigation doesn't work here in Australia, which I knew would be the case. I wasn't bothered as I intend to upgrade the crappy LCD screen with a touchscreen and have this hook up to a Single DIN carPC, that way it will handle Navigation, MP3, DVD, Consult etc. The problem I've ran into, is that a few months ago, one of the cogs used to make the screen popup has stripped one of its teeth. So I'm trying to find a solution for that before proceeding with the rest. Stereo works a treat though lol.

Not a sunroof fan? I didn't actually go out looking for an example with one. With JDM S15's the sunroof was an expensive option hence it was pretty rare. In contrast though all ADM S15 Spec R's have a sunroof.

Been a while since I updated, finally got some time to install the mods that have been sitting in my room for the past month:

$7 Needle Nose Pliers + Mum's stove = Injector Remover

HKS EVC V:

New PowerFC vs old ECU:

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k22/tomi_a/StockECUvsPowerFC.jpg

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k22/tomi_a/ECUmounted.jpg

Greddy Intake (painted in crinkle black) w/Tomei 70mm Throttle Body. Need to get silcon joiners and modify the intake pipe to complete:

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k22/tomi_a/GReddyPlenumTomeiTB.jpg

New Z32 AFM vs Stock AFM. Plug wiring done, need to modify the GruppeM intake adaptor to finish:

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k22/tomi_a/StockS15AFMvsZ32.jpg

Going to Sabbadin Automotive this week for a retune. I'll be giving the power mods a rest for a while to get the bodywork and handling done, then maybe bigger turbo, cams etc.

Well my main suspension gear arrived from Japan on Friday. Had a busy weekend and got everything in except the Cusco E-Con. This is what I ordered:

Cusco - Zero 2E Coilovers (F:8 R:6)
Cusco - E-Con (Electronic Damper Control)
Cusco - Sway Bars (Front and Rear)
Cusco - Adjustable Pillow Tension Rods
Cusco - Tension Rod Bar
Cusco - Adjustable Rear Upper Arms
Cusco - Adjustable Toe Control Rod
Nismo - Power Brace II
Haven't done subframe bushes or roll center adjustment at this pont. I'll take it down to Traction Tyres to get tweaked shortly. Here's some pics throughout the installation:

I haven't actually got the R34 GT-R wheels on at the moment. Had issues with the front touching the coilover collar. Shouldn't be an issue once the height has been adjusted properly, worst case scenario I stick a couple mm spacers on. Running R34 GTT rims at the moment, no issues at all due to the sensible offset lol.

Autobarn believe it or not, the range is called 'Garage Tuff' excellent jack for the money. It's actually aluminuim so very light to move around. Given the material the load capacity is 1200kgs, most steel jacks are higher than this. However if you think about it 1200kgs is more than enough for something like an S15 which is a bit over 1200kgs. You are not lifting the entire car at a time - only a portion which this jack can easily accomodate. That said always use jack stands and wheel chocks too lol!

The piping is all aluminium, powdercoated in black. If you just spray it normally it will scratch/peel off easily.

Pretty normal actually given thats where the coilovers sit, just depends on the version you get - above or below the parcel shelf.

Most people get one that sits below the parcel shelf as it's easier to install, however they sit in the middle of the access port to the boot so you can't push things through if your carrying anything long.

The other brace your looking at is in the boot, it's an OEM brace not sure what it links though given how far back it sits. Might even be something to do with crash impact zones or something.

Would've thought the Power FC as a plugin standalone would've been better or are SRs that different from RBs.

IMO, the PowerFC is highly over rated - at least for an SR. In terms of tuneability it is argued that finer tuning is achievable, however in a real world application most of us would not notice, if at all. Some of the reasons I made the change:

- PowerFC has rubbish cold start idle/return to idle no matter what you do. Which according to most reputable tuners seems to be more apparent with the S15 SR20.

- PowerFC being a complete replacement ECU does not have provision for the consult port, which is very handy when diagnosing issues.

- PowerFC is not stealthy, even with the hand controller unplugged it can be identified easily if the kick panel is taken off (which the cops have been known to do)

- Nistune utilises the factory cold-start maps, and has no issues with idle.

- Nistune retains the consult port.

- Nistune is stealthier given its a daughter board, unless you were to physical pull it apart you could never tell.

You could compare the two to death, but those were my main reasons. :)

PowerFC's for some reason, especially on a S15 SR will for no randomly begin to hunt when idle. This isn't due to the cams, otherwise it would be more of a constant.

When I had mine some days it would be fine, other days it would be all over the place. Checked and cleaned almost every sensor you could think of trying to fix it.

I get a Nisstune - not a single issue with idle.

Mate Can I ask,

Haven't had any experience with them. The version I have of the nistune can be programmed in real-time. Older versions were more primitive and required the EPROM chip to be removed and flashed to update the tune.

I assume that the 'Japanese ROM Tunes' will fall into one of these categories, or be full replacement ECU's.

Sort of, but more flexible. It's worth a read if you're curious. It's definitely a viable alternative to standalone management. Most of those Japanese ROMs aren't realtime programmable whereas the NisTune is. Check it out here (http://www.nistune.com/) if you're keen. It's similar in the sense that it's a daughterboard for the stock ECU, so you retain full functionality of the standard computer.

ahh right thanks mate... I figured it would be fairly well as you've described.

That's exactly the reason I went for a ROM tune with my S15. I guess it's a bonus that my tune was done by a Japanese engineer for Aussie fuel.

Consolidated the mods and pictures on my first post to show better progression over the years.

The car is currently getting some fabrication work done i.e. the battery tray mounting and intercooler hole are being cleaned up and engineered. Decided to do this for two main reasons:

- The battery is not secured properly given the vertical mounting to accomodate the intercooler piping.
- The hole for the intercooler piping goes through the original battery tray.

I will have the car back Monday with both of these items corrected along with certification that these mods meet ADR standards. I've been very paranoid about this aspect of the car from a defect perspective as it's the hardest/most time consuming item to clear if your done.

I have not been defected, but figure its easier to get this engineered if I'm not trying to clear one. I'll post some pictures up of the work when I get it back.

So as previously mentioned, I got some basic fabrication done to the battery tray mounting and intercooler piping hole. This was done to ADR standards and I now have an engineers certificate to help avoid defects on these. Here's a picture of the finished work:

hehe vertex are perfect for s15s :) 250rwkw should be damn aggressive for sr20s. i had a white ja spec s15 before with only 200rwkw and that thing was scary enough on the road :)

There aren't many cars that have been built in AUS that I actually like BUT!

Love the car, love what you've done and love how you've done it. Respect man.
Goes to show, quality parts make a difference as your dyno results have shown.

Big numbers for a small-ish turbo using the small rear housing too.
Should have went with the .86 since you have bigger cams. Would have gone nicely. The difference in spool time to full boost is SFA, 200-300rpm?
And I think Garrett may have initially designed that turbo with the larger rear.

None the less the car is all awesome, till this........

Tis a shame.

Really digging the OEM/factory Nissan look and feel.
Car must go and handle like a dream.
Good work and bravo.

Thanks mate, I went with the .64 housing to avoid lag - the cams are only Poncams so I dont think there would have been a noticeable real world gain. 250rwkw is enough for the moment.

To date I've been mainly concerned with handling and power of the car, so the exterior hasn't really been touched. The Vertex Ridge widebody kit isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it is for me :) I like cars that look clean, as though they could have come from the factory like that - which I think I can pull off with this approach.

Ok, JDM S15's as a part of Japanese emissions are fitted with a carbon canister system. The theory is that excess fuel vapour in vacuum system is absorbed thus making the world a better place. These are not fitted to ADM S15's, arguably work and create a real mess of the vacuum lines (more potential for boost leaks)

So I decided to get rid of it, very straight forward, here's all the crap thats associated to it:

For me it was to clean up the rats nest of boost lines it creates. I want to minimise the potential for leaks.

Mint mate. They look great.
I actually didn't mind the stock tails, but the Yashio LED's look amazing for an after-market option.

Just out of curiosity, is there any advantage with the 2010 models? or is it just the manufacture year?

The 2010 model uses LED's for both the brake and indicators. Models prior to this did not have LED indicators.

Had a few issues corrected by DrDrift (Sam). He also managed to squeeze out a little more power compared to my last run (250.7rwkw) Runs perfectly:

Hehe, probably the only after market ones I like. For me it updates the rear a fair bit compared to OEM.

I got mine through RMS Motors (Henry) shoot him off a message and he'll take care of it.

vac leaks = power gains

It didn't actually have any vac leaks, issue was with the condition of IACV and routing of the BOV return.

nice car man, simple (y)

i have a pewter/gunmetal JDM spec r with sunroof and pop-up dvd aswel , and many more options.
same tail lights too.. well i went Wise Square LED. has more of an OEM look because the smoke isn't too dark and it's black housing not chrome (same OEM housing) :)

you said you really wanted the pop-up option.. can i ask why? what function do you use on yours? 1999 models didn't have DVD, and nav is useless? or did you upgrade to a slave screen and DVD head unit like i have?

I'll be using it as a slave screen to output GPS and DVD from my Pioneer single DIN headunit. Originally I was going to convert it to touchscreen running a CarPC, lost interest in doing it though - might pick it up again in the future.

Few new items added to the car over the last few months, I'll get some pics up later in the week:

- Koyo Type-R 53mm radiator
- Nismo Thermostat
- Defi DIN Cluster (Water Temp, Oil Temp, Oil Pressure) along with the necessary sensors/adaptors. Faces are black, illuminates red
- Pioneer AVH-P6350BT single DIN touchscreen headunit
- Modified Digital Climate Control to illuminate with red LED's
- Painted the top tank of the Koyo Radiator, Fusebox and Fan Shroud in black VHT wrinkle to keep things looking factory

Awesome build thread, spot on with the mods and clean look.
Im currently running an alloy air box but i'm thinking of putting the GruppeM on mine with a z32 AFM. Did you have to do much in the way of modifying the intake adaptor to fit the z32 AFM. Do you have any pics of your modified version. It looks great with the Garage defend cooling panel as well.

Looking forward to more build pics
