View Full Version : Toyota Corolla AE82 Twin Cam of unroadworthiness and defects!

Hey Guys

Been lurking around here for ages, thought id finally put my car up. :)

The plan with this car is to have a nice reliable cheap daily P-plater car that will allow me to have a bit of fun at the track.

The previous owner had the engine and gearbox reco'd and did one track day with it, so it is pretty fresh and runs smoothly. It was meant to be a rally car so I like to believe I saved it from being tortured to death on gravel :)

Mods so far:
- Custom CAI
- Fake Bride seats with custom rails
- AE100 STD Coilovers, modified to fit by MRP
- Front slotted larger rotors
- 15x7 949racing 6UL
- Kumho KU36 205/50/15

How it looked when the previous owner bought it (dont have a photo of when i did. looked the same though)

Car still needs alot of work to get it to be how i want it to, but that all takes time.

Thanks for looking :)

Nice Old school :)
Its come up nice, look forward to reading what you do with the car.
Its a great car to start with, but like me i started with my bluebirds for the same reason then ended up wanting nothing else & stuck with them lol.
Keep us updated on this great little car !

My first track day is coming up in a week and a bit over at Winton. Cant wait!

Got a list of things to do before, the main thing is working on the brakes.
Had some Bendix pads in my AE102 that had no overheating/glazing problems whatsoever (even on track on a 40 degree day, yes i tracked the granny car... once, shamefully hahaha) so i bought some Bendix pads today. And I have to sort out some brake ducting so i dont cook everything.

Also all the cars fluids are getting changed, suspension all checked to see if its still tight and might do a few other little things.

Thats pretty much it for now

oh and also, pics :)

Oh hai

So today I woke up at 5AM and drove up to winton for the winton tampered track day, the first proper track day ive attended, and first track day i have attended in this car. Got to scrutineering, acting all noob because i am and asked for directions to everywhere lol

Pics of car:

Prepared the car and went out for my first session aiming for a measly 2:00 lap time.
I went around fairly easily just getting to know the circuit again and the car in these conditions and it was a bit sketchy here and there but not too bad. The session got cut short another car getting stuck in the gravel trap. So i was a bit disappointed about that, and crawled back to the pits to see my time... lo and behold I have a look at the screen and am shocked that i got a 1:51.4!!

So I got all pumped and went out for the next session, making a few adjustments to my shocks beforehand. The car felt much better but still very floaty and understeery. Traffic didnt help in this session, kept on getting held up by other cars, which wasnt very fun :( Came back with a 1:52.3

The car kept surging because i had no petroleum, so i dashed into town to get some. Got back just in time to lower my tyre pressures and adjust my shocks up before heading out with a passenger this time. Ended up with a 1:52 flat

Session 4: Went out by myself and had a few hotlaps, car was nicely adjusted for the track, only thing holding me up was the tyres, at the beginning. I pushed the car a little bit more and managed a 1:49.5990 PB

Then on my last lap my head gasket blew and i lot pretty much all compression in 2nd and 3rd cylinders GAH!!! :(
We packed up and limped home, kinda happy, kinda sad with the results form the day

i have some video ill upload of session 2 and sesh 4's BHG shenanigans in the next few days

FARK~! 1.49.59!! It took me 5 or so track days to get below the 50 mark.. on worn semi's, top notch effort dude!

02-11-11, 12:22 PM
Vids of skidz...

02-11-11, 12:40 PM
nicely done dude, pretty good time for a first go. Wait did you drive home with a blown head gasket?

nicely done dude, pretty good time for a first go. Wait did you drive home with a blown head gasket?

Yeah I had to. The engine oil wasnt being contaminated and it wasnt overheating at all, I just lost compression in cylinders 2 and 3 effectively making it a two cylinder car with approximately 15kw LOL.. actually I think its either a warped or cracked head after giving it a thorough check.

Trying to do some form of a temp fix tonight to keep the car running for a week so i can do some parts hoarding

02-11-11, 08:12 PM
Awwwww yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah car looks mint man :D

02-11-11, 10:55 PM
Temp fix = fail

Head is coming off tomorrow morning

Also, I got some photos from the guys over at TOCAU

03-11-11, 09:04 AM
sorry, I was the one stuck in the gravel trap.. How come you got a blown gasket? How many km on your speedometer?
Nice time on street tyres.. your car is quicker than me !!
Nice to meet you on that day

That all good man, just glad everything was all right :)

Honestly im not sure yet, gonna double check a few more things this morning and if theyre ok then the head is coming off today

On the straights i was massively underpowered i was barely hitting 140.. but just before my gasket went i hit 150 and changed into 4th lol weird as!

Thanks man, and likewise!

Havent updated here in a while. A fair bit has changed :)

I began pulling the Bigport 4AGE apart, as it suffered from a blown head gasket, But during this process I cracked it with the design of the bigport and the water hoses and pipes on the back of the head.
So I decided to do it once and do it right. Out came the Bigport and the aircon... and in went a Smallport 4AGE :)

I will be gaining 17KW and 11NM (in theory) and because I have taken the aircon out the car will weight in at less that 900 kilos.. which is about perfect :D

Just waiting for it to be wired up by the auto electrician :)

30-11-11, 11:30 PM
3 weeks without a car has been killing me. Still no news from the electrician other than the fact that he now knows how he is gonna tackle the job exactly. Should be done by the end of next week... I hope.

In other news, gonna start applying some elbow grease my old daily wheels next week. I dont believe ive showed them to you guys yet, so ill leave them as a surprise ;)

oh and i found my old RC car in the shed which i lost when i moved house about 7 years ago (WOOOO!!! :D ) gonna need a new engine and maybe a new shell.. Im thinking AE112 WRC Corolla.
Also, the batteries for the remote and the steering controls and throttle still work after sitting in the shed for 7 years.. amazing!

01-12-11, 12:02 AM
Those seats, do wannttt ! Also, those 6ULs :D
Pretty impressive Winton time too.

01-12-11, 12:07 AM

As if steal my thread title. So sad.

Hey dude its fixed.

In other news... Sparky has done most of the wiring now and just have to finish off the fuse box, i have a few more things i have to fix still so it should be back on the road by thursday arvo (AWWW YEAAA) Also, I have a bunch of shiny parts waiting to go on and i am going to start applying some elbow grease to the set of wheels im gonna use as dailys :)

06-12-11, 02:52 PM
So i thought id post some pics up of some of goodies that were hiding under my bed lol

So what you can see is...
- 18mm 3pt adjustabe rear sway bar
- 350mm Nardi Deep Corn
- Catch can

I also have a 440g Skunk2 gear knob, but i already put that on the car so i kinda can't take photos of it at the moment ;)

Just about to start cleaning up the other 4 things now ;) ;) hehe

06-12-11, 02:56 PM
FFFFUUUUUUU Super Jealous of that Nardi !

When's the next time you're going track this ? I'm very keen to see how it goes with the smallport and the swaybar addition ! :D

Next trackday is in on Australia day at the end of January... Im keen to see how it goes myself, if everything is as planned i should be looking at 1:48's :)

Also, just started refurbing some wheels for daily use, ill just leave this here... ;)

06-12-11, 11:59 PM
.... some of goodies that were hiding under my bed lol

under your bed? lol
godspeed for your next track day!!
After installing sway bar, be really cautious on the 120km/h sweeper. Even my rear end of my car lost out a little bit
Car has to be still responsive enough to turn right and prepare for the hair pin.

Sway bar will increase the time by at least one second, so 1:48 flat should be achievable.
I have improved the time by 1 second in Wakefield just by putting the rear sway bar

Yeah under my bed, not even kidding! LOL I dont have any storage space at home so my bed is the best place to keep all my goodies for now :)

Its interesting how you were having oversteering issues, i had massive understeering issues all over the course except the S-bend.. It will be an expierience learning the car again with the new engine and suspension improvements especially since driving my parents cars for the last 2 months. haha

Im looking forward to picking this up tomorrow, hopefully ill get to have a decent drive before i go on hols later this week ill try and take some photos with my new camera if i get a chance :)

27-12-11, 10:19 PM
Nicely done man, Want those wheels for my car lol.

27-01-12, 07:19 PM
Still haevnt gotten my car back. Was due to have it back today, but it seems ill get it back on monday or tuesday. Yeah i know the date keeps on changing, but its out of my control really :( just looking forward to getting it back soon :D

Also, started restoring my wheels again and have finished 2 of them so far.

Theyre Gemini wheels 14x5.5 with about a 20 offset

(before and after btw ;) )

Theyve cleaned up really well. After taking the silicon/gunk that they have on them off then polishing, painting and polishing again, especially with all the spokes these wheels have it takes a fair bit of time.

can't wait to see them on the car now that theyve been cleaned up :D

01-02-12, 10:51 PM
My car is all wired up and ready to go, but when we tried to crank it over nothing happened... woot. The sparky thinks he knows what the problem is, so if all goes to plan ill get it back friday.

Shes so dusty and smells funny too :(

23-02-12, 09:44 PM
2 effing G.

Car has been sitting around for the last week with a few issues and i just got the chance to work on it today.

Car started up beautifully, but had a few teething issues with the new motor. There's a bearing on one of the pulleys thats about to seize up so its making all kinds of noises, then when i put my foot over half throttle it just bogged down.

I thought the timing was out so i adjusted the dizzy and played around until it was running perfectly. Took it for another drive, same problem but it now caused the engine light to come on.
So i bridged the diagnostic thing to check out the engine code and turns out it was number 52. Looked through this 4AGE book that the sparky gave me and it only had codes until 51... great.

So i jump on my phone and google said engine code and it turns out numero 52 is actually for the #1 Knock sensor. I looked around the knock sensor for the wire and gave it a tug and it was on its connector, tried to start it again and same problem. Now im crapping myself thinking this new motor is farked.
I thought i might aswell try and disconnect and reconnect the knock sensor plug, turns out the plug wasnt sitting on its connector properly. Fire it up again after this and all was perfect! the loose plug was causing the engine to think it was knocking. Problem solved. :D

So I gave it a wash, and drove it all afternoon and had the biggest cheesiest grin on my face lol Engine pulls hard compared to the bigport and just has so much more torque... motor is at another level + the sounds.. oh the sounds.... its just awesome!

Now i just gotta put all that dash back in tomorrow and fix the bearing on the pulley, secure a few more things and make a plate for the ECU to sit in the footwell....

Onward to some pics!

So I went for a drive in the morning and then came home and suddenly a wild interior appears along with some wheels? how odd.

Why? Because street car.

29-02-12, 10:40 PM
So clean!

01-03-12, 08:32 PM
Subtle change to the car, I ended up lowering it 20mm, but i will be changing it back on sunday, because it handles like crap! :(

Also the exhaust suddenly sounds different, louder, pops more and its making heaps of fumes... pretty sure i didnt scrape it on anything, and im also pretty sure my cat isnt doing its job anymore lol

I went on a 800km or so return road trip last weekend in the mighty lunch box.
The car did exceptionally well, no smoking, no overheating, no oil or water consumtion and best of all 6.9L/100km!! Engine has finally settled and is just ticking along nicely :D well, apart from one thing, o-ring in the dizzy has gone, oh and the driveshaft decided to break after i got home... so two things. lol

Seat was a bit harsh and was lacking padding for long trips, so i had to make my own pillow with towels and stuff to avoid getting a numb bum an numb legs LOL!!
While talking about my seats, I had a look at my Bride's tag this morning, and I'm now not too sure if they are legit or not considering the price i paid. I can't read the japanese on the tag apart from the english saying "Bride" and "Made in Japan"... made in Japan is a good sign right? :D

Heres a couple of photos before the return trip

Today I fitted the Whiteline rear sway bar, and man what a difference it makes! car handles really well now even with it being a touch too low and with rubbish tyres on. best mod, really happy with it and recommend it for any FWD car :D

All was great until i was finishing up my test drive and blew my head gasket again on the way back.... ripped the head off it and here is the damage:

It holds a new record: its been on the road for about 7 weeks which beats last time :P haha

Im going to put a TRD gasket in its place and throw in the bigport cams in the process for a bit more power, so im not too fussed :)

so much win in this car

where did you get that air pod cylinder cover box?

Applied for a track day in may, but i am the last in the waiting list... fingers crossed!!

Should have a few updates coming in the next month :)

so much win in this car

Thanks man! theres a bit of win sometimes, when it works which is rare! lol

Its pretty much just some plumbing pipe with carbon wrap and some paint, made it for my dads land rover years ago to suit his snorkel and i stole it when i got this car... funnily enough it was a straight swap apart from the bracket to support it :D
Its still not finished for this car, im gonna open it up on the cold side just to get some sound and a bit more response ;)

what wheels are those 15X10's? :0

10-05-12, 12:27 AM

I went with the 949's again, theyre a great wheel and very cheap for what you get! Same goes for my tyres, Kumho KU31's! They grip really well but as soon as you got that bit too fast on them they lose grip straight away and arent progressive at all, im putting that down to more of a new tyre syndrome rather than the tyre itself.

Met this guy as I was handing my tyres over to the shop and he has an Escort track car, with a turbo duratec motor, which does 1:35's around winton when it doesnt snap axles haha! From having previous experience with these cars and suzuki swifts he recommended a few things with the suspension, so the car is now lowered 25mm in the front and 35mm in the rear and after a string alignment to the toe settings he recommended the car is handling great!! Only one problem with running this low (which is surprisingly legal height still) is that the sway bar is hitting a lip on the body of the car, so some mods with an angle grinder will fix that :)

Now enough of my blabbering... PICZORS!!!

hahaha probably takes as long as an oil + filter change thanks to the hard to get filter location!! jackychan.jpg

Also, thats why I went straight to a TRD gasket... no more gasket popping for a while ;) *touch wood*

Thanks dude! :D

Was that the pov spec 2AC model with no front sway bar, only one mirror and no tacho just a blank spot that says corolla? lol theyre so povvy that theyre actually cool! :P

Removing more weight.. doesnt look suss at all with only one seat and no rear plastics! :P

Im really tempted to remove all the sound deadening but it goes against the philosophy of this car lol! im borderline butchering it already! haha

Im really surprised with the "ruined" suspension geometery how quick this thing is around corners! it just grips and grips and grips! Even in the wet! Although the rear needs a wheel alignment and stiffen up the rear sway... also some grinding action too stop the knocking haha

and my signature photo with new rims ;) lol

The light effect is just simply setting your shutter speed for a long duration and then running aorund the car like and idiot with some form of light lol in this case it was a phone ;)

We have in the past, but last time we went we were told we need a permit to hold it there... :(

can't wait to see the difference it makes as i can hear the rear of the car croaking and bending all the time. Gonna fang it around some corners tonight ;)

01-06-12, 03:17 PM
makes a MASSIVE difference in FWD cars. lift off oversteer FTW

03-06-12, 11:32 PM
I think you are getting it mixed up with sway bars. This does make an improvement, makes the whole rear more responsive and reduces a ton of body twist and movement. I cant hear any creaking anymore from the rear :P and surprisingly it feels like it has less body roll again :D

Still needs a little more work on the handling side of things before i look into more power ;)

05-06-12, 04:03 PM
Dunno when I got one for my swift it made a pretty noticeable difference coming into corners. As opposed to the steering staying the same it'd really tuck in as soon as i let off. then again I never replaced the rear swaybar so that would most likely make more of a difference. Any car thats 20+ years old would not be anywhere near as stiff as when it was younger. braces etc help heaps hey!

What other handling mods do you have planned for it? really love this car!!

Ive actually heard of other cars having a larger gain from braces. Civics, newer corollas do benefit a fair bit, mine has made a difference but nothing too drastic. Rear sway bar made the biggest difference in roll and oversteer

Just gonna make it wider, add more grip and improve the brakes for now then its gonna stay like that for a while, im fairly happy where the car is at the moment so im just gonna enjoy like it is for a bit longer :)

09-06-12, 12:53 AM
Hey just wondering, the wheels you have currently on your car, what are they called?

6UL wheels 15x7 in black.

I'm pretty sure they don't ship here.

10-06-12, 01:28 AM
...And bronze too ;) haha

In NSW you should be able to get them from JDM Yard.

10-06-12, 11:48 AM
This is a nice car mate, you've done really well with it :)

I was looking at an SX for a while for a cheap, quick, fun car. Ended up with the N15 SSS though.

I wasnt aware that the 4AGE engines had such an issue with headgaskets, sucks. Is it worth going ARP headstuds with a metal headgasket for longevity?

Thanks mate!! Yeah SSS's are in the same bracket, i rate those cars. :)

They normally are very very reliable motors, i think ive just been dealt the short straw haha Im running a TRD gasket now which ups compression and is a 3 layer metal item so it wont pop for a long time, and ive just reused the standard bolts. she'll be right!

Went on a cruise with TOCAU, had a blast ripping it through the hills with the newer corollas!

19-06-12, 02:21 AM
So im pushing the fitment game on track-ready AE82's by running a 205 tyre, now that my car has been lowered it was going to be an issue to fit them into the puny guards the 82 has. But with some massaging to the guards my track wheels fit with minimal rubbing!
Its only rubbing on the rear bumper as its the lowest i have ran these wheels. Its fine though. Really happy with how it worked out as I only raised the rear by 10mm which evens up the rear and front heights a bit more

I also added rear cambers and a 3mm spacer... needs more though

I bashed the inner guard out to make room and ended up cracking the bog i used to cover the rust for the RWC many moons ago. Ill fix it up nice and proper along with a few other places of rust in the car, looks a bit ugly but FUNCTION>FORM

22-06-12, 01:40 AM
Found out my guards had no solid outer skin. The outer guard was made of bog and was all that was holding my guards together. So I rage quit the guard and made a new more solid item to go in its place. Plus now i has more room for the 205's!! :D

Havent taken a pic of the end product, but lets just say my car is multi-coloured for now... :P

Also rolled my front guards and made a mess of one which will need paint, ah well!

23-06-12, 03:55 PM
ahhhhh rust repairs on guards hahaha reminds me of when i had my datsun 1600 lol. Nice welds though! they look neat! tire does fill out the guard well. with more spacers would look great! would they affect handling at all at the track?

Everything about this is so cool. The wheels are spot on for the build and the functionality of all mods is excellent. Keen to see how you go next track day with some quicker times.

Thanks mate! it still needs some more work, just bought a daily recently so this will be getting some more attention once i get the other car on the road.

I got this thing all in one colour now, heres just one pic for now

Went up to Winton today with a few mates, had a ball!

Passing GTR's and WRX's and getting TX3 drivers mad.

I had an issue with the R888's, not only was the weather cold, but they're just too big for the car and i couldn't warm them up regardless of what tyre pressure I ran. This caused them to be really snappy and unpredictable which made the car a handful all day... it was pretty fun though :P

The A1RM's pulled up better than anything I have ever experienced, felt great braking later than all sorts off cars!

But, I wasn't happy with my suspension setup, the front is rolling around too much compared to the rear and the grip is too high for the springs so the nose is diving and the car is rolling too much through the corners for my liking.

I was just starting to gel with the car but decided to call it a day in session 3 due to doing in my rear wheel bearing and a few mates having some bad luck of their own.

Anyway, here are my session times.

Session 1:
2:14.2800 1:52.7850 1:49.3340 1:48.4470 2:00.0830 1:50.4730 1:48.6590

Session 2:
2:05.2700 2:00.4480 1:55.0730 2:02.7710 2:00.6170 1:53.9150 1:50.4480

Session 3:
2:07.6110 2:01.9410 2:20.0790 1:52.9330 1:49.1490 1:48.7830 1:47.9560

Now to fix broken stuff and get ready for the 16th!!

27-08-12, 07:36 PM
Thought id get some nice new wallpapers with the new wheels ;)

http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/3750/imgp8506.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/818/imgp8506.jpg/)

Where might this be? Wouldn't mind taking some pics there at night

28-08-12, 09:37 AM
Got some pics off of a mate :)

CTX: It was a popular spot under the bolte, afaik its all fenced off now.

05-09-12, 01:04 AM
So like totally yeah...

Also, found the little biatch knock coming from my rear drivers side caliper - everything is tight but the top half wobbles, slider pin things worn maybe?

Oddly enough, The new spring rates are 10/8k whereas the ones before them are 6/4k. They seem to be working alot better with the car and the shocks and surprisingly have a very comfortable ride (dafuq?) the car is more planted, stable, easier to drive and much more predictable on the limit of grip. Very happy with them! :)

11-09-12, 09:53 AM
So its gone stiffer, wider, lower and now has genuine advan triangle stickers from japland... ive always wanted a throwback/retro sticker to the 82 gr.A days :D

Not much left to do before sunday! :)

17-09-12, 12:19 AM
Another day at winton!

Got there as soon as the gates opened at 7 and were the first to pick a spot. Swapped the tyres over and just did usual maintenance checks as per usual to get ready for the day.

Sitting purdy

There was a slight mix up with the groupings so I only got an outlap and inlap in the first session when I took a friend around but immediately I could tell that the car felt very different to last time, alot more grip and predicability. Brought it in and refined my tyre pressures, and found my oil cap was leaking because I didnt tighten it properly lol

Got the full second session. The group had a mix of cars, but got held up by an XR8 and Mitsu Starion. Unfortunately after my hot lap my fire extinguisher came loose and was flying around the cabin so I called it a sesh...
Considering I was aiming for a 46er I was stoked when I found out I had done a 1:45.7

In the third session I further refined my tyre pressures, adjusted the rear shocks to an increase oversteer tendency and then removed the passenger seat because racecar. Also, I had a massive powersteering leak so my dad cut his sock and put it over my PS reservoir LOLLOLL it did the job.
Ended up pushing a bit harder but the brake fluid was going spongey and lacked feel. The session ended and I pulled a 1:45.2 another improvement!!

hardparking at the racetrack

dad's sock ahahah

because racecar.

The car was feeling great, the suspension was feeling spot on but the brake fluid was letting the car down. So we gave it a quick bleed at the front and that gave me so much more confidence. I took the car out in the last session and realised I didnt have to brake from turn 2 through the sweeper until the first hairpin! the car suspension was amazing. But the day was starting to cool and I thought I had less grip when in actual fact I was pushing the car harder than ever!

I finished the fourth session with a new PB of 1:44.4420 !!!! my jaw dropped when I was told and I couldnt wipe the smile off my face :D

It was an amazing day that was run quite smoothly, nobody had any big dramas and were all able to drive home. Thanks to OzRenault and MelbS15 for organizing the day, particularly OzRenault for giving me a spot, thanks!! :)

Here are my session times:

where did you get advan sticker?

18-09-12, 01:38 AM
Thanks guys!! :D

I got the advan sticker from a bloke in Japan. He may put them up on ebay occasionally

Heres a video from session 2... me being a bit of a derp forgot to turn it on in the following sessions... :(

After stalling for such a long time, I thought that I should get the exhaust done.

The exhaust setup I had previously was a fairly standard setup apart from the straight through xforce muffler with dodgy welds. This caused many exhaust leaks around those weld points... It was loud, droney and no better than standard, actually if anything it was probably worse.

So after making a few orders the mailman made a visit last week dropping off these two Magnaflow items. A High-Flow Cat Converter and a Straight through muffler both in 2.25 inch.

So I went about fitting them up at the exhaust shop. After getting quotes from many places and advice, I went to TrueFlow in Melton. Walked in and told them that I wanted a 2.25 mandrel system and ill supply cat and muffler etc etc.
As I returned to collect the car, I found that they not only welded in the cat and muffler, but they also kinda remade my secondaries and flex pipe!! Not bad bit of work when they didnt even charge me a cent over what they quoted :D

I didnt end up going with a tip, I like how raw it looks as it is... lol

I took it for a spin right away and found the car to be less droney. When you are cruising I actually found it easier to talk and listen to my passeger than before, I wasnt yelling anymore haha
Once you put your foot down it turns up to 11! I found that there is alot more response, torque and power! She even chirps easier in 2nd! :D

nice sounds man!!!

05-10-12, 10:35 PM
sounds sick as !

05-10-12, 11:32 PM
This car looks like a super fun car

That sounds so good though!

06-10-12, 04:31 AM
This car seems like a riot. Nice to see someone refining skills and suspension setups rather then adding heaps of power.

04-11-12, 03:36 PM
Not much of an update.

Been busy with school and what not so the car has been a bit neglected...

But I tried on the gemini wheels again with my spacers, turns out theyre the same hubcentric bore as my 6UL's, not to mention they fit perfectly in the guards now. Im currently only running them on the rear and whenever i even think of making a turn they scrub :P

The suspension has settled a bit now so i cant do this trick anymore... which means theres very little rear wheel gap now :D

Also the interior is back in...

And i deleted my rear wiper because it was blowing my fuses and i couldnt drive without wipers lol illl give the bolt a quick rust-convert and paint once i have time ;)

04-11-12, 05:40 PM
freaking LOVE that shifter!!

19-11-12, 11:44 PM
Took the bronze wheels off to get rotated thanks to a bit of camber wear... heres the worst one which was on the front right

So I picked up some cheap and nasty second hand tyres for the geminis

I think they were made in the early 90s or something as i have no rear grip at all which makes for some pretty fun times around corners haha

03-12-12, 02:03 AM
Came across a couple of pics :D

And my favourite...

Also tried on a mates set of very wide BBS wheels

Got a few big things planned for the car in the new year, and hopefully its back out on the track in march :)

08-12-12, 03:50 AM
wow at how well that sits if thats just a wheel swap, little bit more low and camber and the thing could be all stanced and stuff lol.

26-12-12, 12:06 AM
wow at how well that sits if thats just a wheel swap, little bit more low and camber and the thing could be all stanced and stuff lol.

Thanks man.

Priority is for it to be functional on the track so it wont be going any lower (without suspension work) and it already has a heap of camber on it which doesnt really show in photos that much for some reason...

Wheels are on the list in the future, for now its the engine and driveline which will be getting a bit of attention.

26-12-12, 09:25 AM
The BBS look great, but so happy to hear you are all about going to the track. You are making me want to buy another Twincam. Top work.

26-12-12, 06:02 PM
My other car will be going on the floor once I get enough funds, don't you worry. But this one is built to be driven. Gotta have priorities ;)

20-01-13, 03:03 AM
After drooling over a certain KE70 I have always wanted a particular set of rims, so after waiting patiently for a few months the perfect set popped up for an awesome price. So I made the trek to Sydney to pick them up.

The car used oil more than it did petrol (went through almost a litre on the way up, and another on the way back down LOL) and had axle binding issues due to my new driveshaft being a too long. :(

Regardless we made it up and back in one piece, although I do have a sore back (dem NSW roads...) and am still sweating and dehyd thanks to the lack of A/C on two 40+ degree days!! hahaha

Hayashi Streets
14x6.5 effective offset +3 with 10mm spacer (originally +13)
14x7 +7

Running a 175/65R14 balloon KH15 tyre. haha

They do need a polish but Ill get around to that after the track day...

A couple of people said I shouldve gone bigger but for some reason i love a narrow tyre on the 82's :)

20-01-13, 05:43 PM
wheels look sweet as man! suit the car so well

20-01-13, 05:50 PM
That looks perfect mate

20-01-13, 06:07 PM
Looks unreal! Always wanted one of these, this ones done perfect!

20-01-13, 06:28 PM
Can't believe you made that drive in the weather we just had in Sydney!

20-01-13, 08:57 PM
Looks so good, definitely made it worth it!

20-01-13, 09:41 PM
Streets look great on it

21-01-13, 09:08 AM
Dear sir, you own the winningest ae82 Corolla I have ever seen! That is brilliant! Top work!

05-02-13, 11:49 AM
After all the work that I did on the car, I decided to go up to Winton on the Australia day public holiday with a few mates.
With the sole intention of having a good time and savoring the moment, I wasn’t really pushing for a PB, and with the scorcher of a day it was I knew that it wasn’t going to be easily achievable anyway unless I pulled out some crazy skills (which I don’t have lol)

First session:
Went out on track with Jo (woot woot), car felt really good, heaps of grip than ever before but the first thing I noticed was it was lacking a lot of power compared to last time, in fact I couldn’t even get it up past 140 on the straight! Everything else with the car was spot on though.

Second Session:
The heat started to turn up when I took Phil for the second session. We had a bit of fun chasing and passing some of the other cars, and we couldn’t stop laughing when people waved us past but we didn’t have the power to get past them haha!

The track was getting so hot that the tyres were getting greasy after 3 laps. Another thing I noticed was the cloud of smoke pouring out the back of the car when I floored it! Not good.

Pulled into the pits and parked the car and went to check my times… as we got back I found a huge puddle of oil under the car!! UH OH!

With the help of Jo and a few others, we found the main source of my issues, the oil return line on the back of the head had cracks all throughout, the rubber had turned brittle and stiff!!
We pulled it off and I headed into town with James to hunt for a hose and new clamps, also more drinks and a fluro vest for James so he could take snaps

The vest and drinks and clamps were found, unfortunately the hose wasn’t. We hacked it up with some clippers to ditch the cracked edges and with some help from Frank we managed to pop the hose back on with proper clamps.
I went for a spin around the pits and revved it a few times to get oil pressure up and seems like the leak had gone!... lets get back to racing!!

Third Session:
Managed to bring Bway along for a spin this time. The track was scorching hot at this stage. We warmed up the brakes and had a good dice with Andy and Mick in the sedan, and a very angry Gemini who got caught up in our fun.

The brakes got a good workout this session as we sat on the tails of the two cars ahead. Pretty sure Brian was surprised how well my brakes pulled up and the fact that there wasn’t even a hint of fade either haha

The tyres unfortunately were goners after 2 laps and became really greasy, still they were very easy and predictable to drive on. They did give me a scare when they started vibrating whenever we turned right, but it was only a chunk of rubber stuck on the tyres lol

The car began to get hot and we brought her in early. The oil leaks had stopped, with only slight dripping, which we assumed was just the residue dripping off from before.

Last Session:
This time I decided to go out by myself, with no passenger and no passenger seat the car felt very different. A bit more taily and throwable in the corners, it did exactly what I wanted. There was only a slight increase in speed where I was now hitting 145 on the straights (I was getting 155 to 160 last time!)
I had Tim in his EP3R following me, and the cars were very even in lap times. I was quicker through the corners but on the straight I would lose any advantage I had worked hard for… there ended up being only 0.05 seconds between us at the end of the day! Not bad for the tired and smoky 82 against a well tuned K20!

Ended up with my best time of 1:45.1080 for the day.

1:45.1080 << PB of the day

I think if I had more seat time with myself alone in the car I could’ve taken half a second off easily, and if the weather was cooler another half a second. The motor on the straights drained any extra driving I did through the corners… :(

Big thanks to Jo, Steve, Brian, Andy and Frank for all their help and advice on the day, and to James for taking all the snaps! Much appreciated.
And to all those who came to the track day I am glad you all had a great time!!

Over the course of the 2 years that I have owned it, I have gone from a 1:49.6 to a PB of 1:44.4. There is more potential in the car but it always come to a point where you need to say enough is enough. It kills me to say this, but this brings a close to this chapter of the 82’s life…

With a few things popping up over the last couple of weeks this also means that I am unable to build the SX. This opens a new opportunity and something that I never thought would occur, but the 82 will be moving on toward the end of the year and many of my bits are already up for sale.

05-02-13, 12:47 PM
shit sad news man, what popped up!?

01-03-13, 08:44 PM

02-03-13, 12:52 PM
So nice to see a well preserved rolla of this era. So hard to find. These were the car to have when I got my L plates.

04-04-13, 07:23 PM

Unfortunately I got defected a few weeks back.

Sadly when I tried to clear it, this didnt pass RWC, and if it didnt pass RWC then it wouldnt pass the pits :(

So what does this mean?

Well, this is now my track car! Ill be getting to work stripping this right out once i find a suitable daily driver... lol

04-04-13, 07:54 PM
BEST NEWS i've herd all day.

whats the plan? gut the chassis? 20v turbo? do it.. Straya kient

04-04-13, 08:12 PM
i strongly recommend you get a group A style vinyl for the car, its soooooo period correct. its something i must do before i die

07-04-13, 04:12 PM
Vynils? LOL Not gonna happen mate, unless I get a sponsor, which also won't happen...

Gonna keep going the way I'm going... keep it simple and cheap-ish. Reduce weight and thrash it till the motor pops... I've set a few goals as far as dropping my time around Winton goes, as for now its just fixing a few issues and reducing weight.

07-04-13, 04:51 PM
id love to enter a track day with you, fwd vs rwd, would be interesting

although they do say its easier to drive fwd faster

06-06-13, 06:54 PM
