For those that are going for the first time, here's a heads up about qualifying so that its not too confusing (I know that the first time I went I didn't know what was going on):

In qualifying, each driver is given two judged laps (best one counts) and unlimited practice laps.

On the start-line, there are two lanes. One lane is for those wanting to do practice laps, and the other lane is for those who are confident to do a judged lap.

The car in the judging lane is given priority, so those in the practice lane are stopped. Once the judged car is a decent distance ahead, those in the practice lane will be waved through. Hence, you may hear the commentators talking about a car on a qualifying lap but you'll be seeing five cars out on the track (the lead car is the one they are talking about).

The clock is always counting down - regardless of any offs or track stoppages - so those who leave their qualifying runs til the last minute run the risk of not getting a qualifying lap in, especially if there is a queue.

It's certainly a hard and exciting session, as you need to time your runs perfectly. We've had to bail out of the qualifying lane a few times because the queue was so long that we had dropped too much tyre temp by the time we got to the front.
