Hey guys,
Finally decided to post up a build thread of my S13.

Bought the car off a member on NS.com in 2010 looking like this:

And now here's where i start,

Headlight stalk was loose and kept triggering high-beams unintentionally, so i cut out a plastic tab to slide it through to stop it wiggling.
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6219/6259922327_0c41e6b7ed_z.jpg

Bought a GKTech Radiator overflow bottle
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6153/6259922831_7df4ded3f0_z.jpg

Because the current one kept forming holes through the silicon..
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6114/6260450048_c3ed070ab9_z.jpg

Ripped it out
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6158/6260450928_40844d51e7_z.jpg

New one in
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6215/6259924719_7b6b625c36_z.jpg

Got sick of the semi-white interior and gear knob, so i took out the centre console and radio surround
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6153/6259926133_41527c0a58_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6234/6259927151_94195edb41_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6167/6260454308_46ae2025ec_z.jpg

Didn't quite fancy the white cluster look
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6037/6259928401_df1a446c54_z.jpg

Took out the steering column surround
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6113/6259931485_8ab4160116_z.jpg

Took out the cluster, unplugged it, took off the cover and surround
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6047/6259932383_6ce5b23f73_z.jpg

Spraying it using matte black
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6231/6259932877_69f34801e7_z.jpg

Put it all back together the next day
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6226/6259934101_e1159e0d77_z.jpg

Sprayed the radio surround and centre console too and put it back together
Put my Dildo gearknob and new glovebox in while i was at it
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6040/6260460888_ac2f91eb37_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6224/6260460416_afefa963ba_z.jpg

Apparently i have a really close relationship with rust too

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6103/6259929865_32e547d7ee_z.jpg

Decided to do a temporary fix
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6217/6260456902_5a0b168fa8_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6176/6259930789_77d2553380_z.jpg

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6232/6260463080_7375e1a9a2_z.jpg

Got a present from the sister while she was in the States
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6114/6260459244_9480a0cc7e_z.jpg

Then just kept driving and enjoying everything as it was for a while

Gave the car a service
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6214/6260273433_6d903b42ff_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6113/6260257071_f3562fb2f8_z.jpg

Pulled out the camber on the front
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6099/6260257403_c63d27060b_z.jpg

Decided to drive 6 hours down South-Coast
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6104/6260258227_a92fc7f6aa_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6060/6260259351_454ba63fa7_z.jpg

As you know, all S13 headlights are a total joke, driving at night time was the worst, had to concentrate on the white double lines in the middle of the road to guide me..
Eventually got there
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6232/6260786708_a4d69fd1ca_z.jpg

This bear/dog was eyeballing me
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6235/6260787332_a6e7034266_z.jpg

My mate that lives in the South-Coast took his Aprilia RS125 out for a spin
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6152/6260787994_123f8c4993_z.jpg

Then it was back to home
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6217/6260262009_c7ae850286_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6107/6260789498_c0036bc88d_z.jpg

The drive home was good, for 6 hours down, and 6 hours back the engine held strong, no dramas at all besides..
the rear brakes, they were squealing and screeching all the way back home lol
Rear discs were gone, couldn't be arsed machining them, pads were gone
So i bought discs, calipers and pads
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6218/6260267913_d6192689eb_z.jpg

Bought a HID kit, pretty shit for 100 bucks..
But it was at least better than standard headlights
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6054/6260263193_37839019ca_z.jpg

LED parkers to match
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6113/6260790408_6c7968a00a_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6228/6260790878_c63c888275_z.jpg

Decided i wanted to hide the ballasts
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6117/6260264625_c85a0513fe_z.jpg

Passenger side
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6118/6260791814_714df026f1_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6218/6260265591_242ee39046_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6236/6260266067_5eb6e311a6_z.jpg

Drivers side
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6109/6260793294_f8b8454dc3_z.jpg

Without grille, didn't like it, my car doesn't look agressive enough to run no grille
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6165/6260266933_68e354a7cd_z.jpg

Gave it a wash
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6051/6260795416_9ea8c2fd34_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6152/6260272065_3b00741e4c_z.jpg

This part of the door was splitting off, so got it replaced
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6219/6260272895_45599f5c66_z.jpg

Got front bar grille/air guides on. Mustache matches nicely
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6154/6260800864_964b743bdf_z.jpg

Got a pair of rear Adjustable Whiteline Camber arms
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6112/6260274651_ae9821f216_z.jpg

Installing them:
Loosened the coilovers and took them out

Standard Vs. Aftermarket
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6031/6260804284_d02950a58d_z.jpg

Put a little grease on it
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6048/6260804686_db3d54569b_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6031/6260805208_a7230a36f7_z.jpg

Bought a pair of Cazman Adjustable Toe arms
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6177/6264682901_e3650eea8e_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6106/6264683163_4a56e34cdc_z.jpg

Got clear front bar indicators,
I retained the housing, only changed over the cover and changed the standard bulbs to amber
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6239/6264684069_7e0f634808_z.jpg
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6117/6264684379_f98462608b_z.jpg

Also got myself one of these

- There's more, but have to go with a mate to pick up his new S2K, will update when i get home.

Interior is so much better now. I'd get into that sunroof rust early as it prone to being a lot worse than it usually looks to be!

Nice work. Keep it tidy.

Heaps good, loved reading it all. :)

I understand why you pulled the camber out of the rear, but how come the front too? Was it just to make the rims fit a bit nicer?

Nice clean S13 man; S13's like this are becoming scarce. :D Good read.

You have done a sweet job in tidying the car up and maintaining it. Any plans for 5-stud and aggressive offsets?

Thanks mate
It was because the car was sold to previous owner on stockies, so previous owner bought himself a set of driftteks to replace the stockies.

Cheers,
Yep just wanted it closer to the guard as the fronts are 8J and rears are 9J

wow the sunroof rust got really bad... thats the worst Ive seen on a sil, its wasnt even a bubble when i sold it.
Did he park it on the beach everyday or something ?
The white interior I got done 2 weeks after i bought the car (was reading hot4's back before i bought it lol) Regreted it a month later. I would have got it done in black swede or something subtile if i was to do it again.

I got told the feathers in the sunvisor were good luck, been there longer than the guy i bought it off... are they still there ?
The guy I sold it too looks like he just took off the bar vents and put the drift teks on

At least your looking after it and improving it. ;)
I would have ripped the interior out of it too if i still had it

It came with SL Rails, wanted to test fit it.

So one day, the car wouldn't go into gear, clutch pedal felt.. different?
Shat my pants, popped the hood, check clutch fluid, ran dry
Topped it up, everything all sweet again. Need to check for leaks though

The missus got me a new gear knob

Ripped out the Sub, 2 Amps, wiring and Headunit
Still undecided if i should run an amp for just the speakers or to run a stock system with no amp.

Anyway, what was decided was that the sound deadening was going to get a beating.

Method:
- Buy 5kg or more of dry ice and store in esky or foam box: http://www.bocworldofwelding.com.au/storelocator
- Pour dry ice pebbles into a couple of sandwich bags (if you don't have pebbles then it's fine)
- Place them over the sound deadning for a good couple minutes, a good sign is when you hear crackling
- Move dry ice bags over to other areas. Areas which you have just applied it already, use a Chisel/Flat head and hammer to chip it off.
- Repeat process til done
- For some parts, e.g. Transmission tunnel, i had to use a heat gun to get it off, really annoying (blowdryer or portable heater works also)
- I used paint scraper/putty knife to scrape off small bits
- Used paint thinner/turp to wipe off leftover residue (Air out the car after)

All of it weighed about 15kgs
Don't have an after pic

So not much been happening,
Just recently paid a big amount for rego, bought some side skirts and a front lip.
Front bar was heaps warped, so tried to shape it back up with a heat gun.
Chucked on the front lip. Side skirts still need to be painted though, will do that later.

So i finally decided to update cos i tore my fucking ACL, full thickness tear in the knee.
Crippled and completely useless atm, been playing this shit all day for the past week
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7269/7077024055_68b8d84afe.jpg

Anyway, a while ago..

I bought these

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7102/7076996043_a65f644b6f_c.jpg

So anyway, the nuts that were on the wheels were old, black and rusted.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7058/6937755840_722a654ca5_c.jpg

I thought i'd buy new bolts and nuts to try and make it look nicer somehow

My Clutch master cylinder was leaking badly, i think piston seal was fucked, it would leak fluid from the piston at the firewall, down the clutch pedal and onto the floor mat
So gave the car a service and took car off the road and ordered a new CMC.

Drove this gokart around while my s13 was off the road
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7048/7077008285_bce8fa8e8d_c.jpg

CMC

Leaking from inside that rubber cover
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7085/7077015139_20dedfec70_c.jpg

Took the fluid out from reservoir
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7259/7077016897_3599e8793d_c.jpg

Then took this pin out from the clutch pedal
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7131/6930940612_78f4c0b389_c.jpg

Then unbolted the CMC from the engine bay, didn't have much space, so had to take off the reservoir too
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7209/7077021865_ba7a34af8e_c.jpg

Then i just reversed the process when i put the new one in and bled the clutch

Credits to the photographers! :)

Then a couple weeks later i decided to put some effort into finally getting the wheels on
As 15" wheels don't offer much clearance for bigger brakes, i had to downgrade the brake calipers, and still also needed 25mm bolt-on spacers to make shit fit.
Wasn't really keen on downgrading S15 calipers to 180sx DET calipers, but i'm planning to stay 15" for a while.
I like the look of 15" designs, i don't think the car has enough to push 17" 9JJ anyway :)

Bought SR20DET front calipers, rotors and bendix pads
Bought a pair of Otomoto bolt-on spacers
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7092/7077028105_498285012b_z.jpg

Put new setup on the fronts and bled the brakes
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7206/7077036593_72ac7085bb_z.jpg

It sat a bit Mexicano
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7242/7077040849_c66571f0d2_c.jpg

So i dialed in some neg camber

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7218/7083805871_250419c25d_c.jpg

Pretty happy with how it sits atm, need a wheel alignment to fix my toe and shit though.
Also got some quotes to paint my sideskirts. For the price to paint it, i could buy another 3 pairs of sideskirts.
So will figure that shit out later on after i finish surgery on my knee

Just an opinion, but I wouldn't even worry with side-skirts, your car already looks the business as is. Maybe the S13 mudflaps for the front wheels, and that would be it.
I saw this at the EOMM and had a real good look at it - clean car dude.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Yeah i do think it needs a bit more low to pull it off. Though with the lip on the cars already sitting about 3 inches high :(
Might order a new set of coilovers later on anyway..

Exterior? Brick headlights, then i'm done with the front. Might take up Tobys idea with the mudflaps. Really want a spoiler now, either a CA wing or DMax wing, still unsure though.
But might leave that for later, i want to go back to suspension mods for now.

Take the front lip off and fucking slam. Rear end is OK with some height, bur front needs to be scraping xmember on pebbles. IMO take lip off, lips are overrated anyway, since they're black anyway it doesn't even make the car look any lower.

Looks fairly clean too. I like.

haha, i reckon the lip compliments the front though. Skirts with no front lip would look pretty funny (in my mind), I'll give it a trial and error later.

Right, so i've been pretty slow with any progress and updates because i just had surgery done near the end of May. Cost me more than how much my car was worth, but i still have my car  and i've only just been able to walk again.

Yadi yadi ya, life went on

Then one day i turned the car on and it didn't sound right, whole car was vibrating.
Sounded like a scooby boxer engine. So i pulled over and popped the bonnet
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7272/7787639244_ac15d815db.jpg

First thing that came to my mind was a fucking pigeon was in there, somehow it looked like feathers, (at first sight)
But i knew i blew the spark plug leads and possibly the spark plugs, and was also running on 3 cylinders.
So the job was to change the leads, the spark plugs, and clean the cylinder head.

Went to look for the same leads but they didn't have them, had to end up buying some more expensive leads instead, didn't want to spend that much, but i was desperate. Also got some NGK spark plugs too (BKR6E).
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8301/7787633340_1bbde83b5d.jpg

Spark plugs were still in there, i disconnected the leads and cleaned out the cylinder head with the spark plugs still in there so nothing would drop in za engine. Changed the spark plugs over, torqued them up and made sure all the new leads matched up and on the dizzy too.

I seem to have a thing with late night updating
I got rego coming up next month, dreading it hard ;'(

What i bought before was a D-Max wang, i kinda feel like the car needs a spoiler.
Still want to keep it looking 90s but i don't want a duck wing, or a tiny boot lip
Will be painting it anyway and trial fitting it to see how it looks with the rest of the kit
So then i'll decide if it shall have spoiler or no spoiler ^.^
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8428/7787551056_99af66af01_c.jpg

Preparation and painting:
This is my first time, so it isn't professional, just documenting what and how i did everything

Paint code: WK0 White Pearl
Use protection, mask and shit. Inhaling paint and thinner is fucking bad.

So as the pods and spoiler are fibreglass/frp and in a gel coat finish, i had to sand down the gel coat first
Started off with 240grit sandpaper and dry sanding
Then 400grit dry, and worked my way to 800grit wet
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8302/7787545318_f5332a2f13_c.jpg

For the side skirts, as they were already in primer when i bought them, i used 800 grit dry/wet only
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8421/7787531752_990bbfea21_c.jpg

Used Wax and Grease remover for it all
Time for primer now
Bought acrylic primer and acalac thinner, also flexi primer adhesion promoter (for the sideskirts)
Mix that shit. Ratio was: Primer 1 : Thinner 1.5
I used Flexi Prime on the side skirts as they were plastic, gave it a couple coats

Then i sprayed everything primer starting off with a light coat
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8288/7787528844_c73300246e_c.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8421/7787505774_d8a3aa5036_c.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8305/7787499642_9a32e741cb_c.jpg
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7275/7787473464_6810a5efb9_c.jpg

Let it dry, then it was time to wet sand everything with 800grit
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8440/7787536120_72d6326e70_c.jpg

I gave the side skirts another light even coat of Flexi Prime then let everything sit overnight

Base coat (don't have pics) i gave like 3 coats. I didn't let it cure for toooo long until pearl as i 'heard' it's prone to peel off or whatever. Used multipurpose thinner, my ratio for this was 1:1

Pearl coat, 1 : 1.5.
I did 4-5 coats?
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8439/7816772404_19b9f18c79_c.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8446/7816768302_10cd77f2de_c.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8448/7816759116_810abfff92_c.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8429/7816749256_cf305af261_c.jpg

Gave it a thick top coat and left it for 2 days
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7119/7816743210_cfac5be144_c.jpg

Just finished clear coat today. 1 : 1.5
4-5 coats

Probably let it sit for a week, then cut and polish :)

I'm not too fussed on how it's gonna turn out, pretty sure the paint wont be a perfect match, as it's hard to match.
Only shit thing is that i don't have a booth, would've been a good idea if i wet the floor of where i was painting to stop dust and shit on the ground from flying up and around

Attended Driving Sports event, 15th December just recently for the first time with my mate.
Had an awesome time on the wet pan,
At first i used clutch kicks the first two sessions, then was told to use the handbrake after
I need to practice transitions and give it more gas to be able to link it.
Had about 5 sessions altogether, had to leave a little early.
Car held up great with no dramas, just find it hard to get the RPM up, i think i might be running an S14 DET gbox, don't know if it matters though.

Car looks good, and good to see it on the track.

Keep your revs up and keep clutch kicking to keep the revs up.
The hand brake is only good for starting the slide or changing the angle.
If your going to use it, get the revs up while your on the hand brake..

(Locky)
18-12-12, 11:13 AM
Handbrake isn't the best for starting the slide

Better for maintaining angle whilst extending through slide

rixii
18-12-12, 11:24 AM
Oh, I was told by someone to not clutch kick and just use the handbrake instead..

Thanks for the tips guys! :)

Definitely clutch kick over handbrake, you'll get to your drifting angle faster and it'll look better.
Use the handbrake as little as possible in fact, you can adjust your angle and maintain your slide on the footbrake as well if you have enough speed up, which is better I feel (you'll still use the handbrake though, don't doubt that!)

If the car is not stepping out its due to no weight shifting to the front which cause understeer, that is why you need the e-brake.
Its easier to just faint drift... turn out then in, into the apex to create weight shift, counter steer to match the amount of weight shift and throttle control to maintain drift or to get more sideways, if power drops then clutch kick or maybe your just in the wrong gear.

Skidpan should be gear 2 anyways in most cars, just make sure to stay in the power band.

footbrake is better then e-brake cause you can concentrate more on the steering work at hand. How much you brake is important.

for beginners, slammed cars dont really help here as it'll just understeer then snap oversteer lol, not saying yours is slammed but just an example of why slammed cars are shit and people feel like they are not learning or getting better at drifting and think its because they dont have enough power...

nice s13 too, but why this when you got a turbo one to use now? lol

Yeah i sometimes found it hard to get the rear to kick with the handbrake unless i have speed. I guess clutch kick is easier to get the angle faster and at low speeds too. When would i be using the footbrake? For more angle or less angle?

Yeah i was in gear 2 the whole way, do you know what my power band would be? above 4k?
Because the 180 has too much power :(
Don't think i'll be able to learn to drift in a car like that

Thanks for the info guys, absorbing as much as i can

the first time i started drifting it thought it was going to be easy ( looks easy on youtube lol). The hardest part was getting over the reaction of stopping the slide. Everything you ever learn in a car, driving lessons and general street driving is to correct and straighten the car out. so for the first half of the day id initiate and get the car sliding then correct the slide instinctively.

It just takes time, i started just weight transferring into the corner then kept on the gas to keep the slide going. wet track days help loads in learning car control ( and you dont have to change tire every 10 min)

just have fun with it dude.

Hey dude

i was the one that messaged you on fb ;)

everyone can give you tips but its what makes you feel more comfortable with

when nebuchernezzer was referring to footbraking, its when you have enough speed and at a certain angle that you dont require the handbrake to keep the angle as well as slowing down

clutch kicking solves everything lol

For extending slides if you're going fast enough you can just use the footbrake and hold the slide (along with steering inputs) till you hit the apex and go for power.
With the handbrake you can slide for longer going slower because it doesn't slow you down much (with the footbrake you'd be on the power later, gain more speed, then wash it off faster on the footbrake)

In reality you usually end up using a little bit of handbrake to adjust as well as the footbrake, I used to try and not use the handbrake at all and I've got a few incar vids of myself back in the day successfully getting through a corner or section with no handbrake used (which made me feel heaps pro haha :P)

As far as initiating I used to try and spin the wheel as fast as I could and then kick the clutch just after the car started to change direction.
This doesn't work as well on slippery surfaces at low speeds though, there is less weight transfer and in a stiff car it'll just tend to push the nose along.

I used to take lots of incar footage of myself and watch it repeatedly after a drift day, then compare that to videos of good drivers in a similar situation or on the same course.

Not wide at all. 15x6.5J 11+ all round
and 20mm bolton spacer on the front.

Anyway, I went out for a second time with Driving Sports on the 29th December last month.
Went with my workmate PartyCat/Tyler with his R31 and my mate Nelson with his S13.
Had about 10-15 sessions that day, not many people.
Got used to linking the kinks this time. Car ran fine no dramas at all :)

I don't know, before i sold my drifteks, i wanted to go back to 15" with near stock width. To me, it seemed suitable for an NA SR20. Didn't wanna sacrifice the 80killawasps it barely has with wider wheels.
Don't worry, I already have a next set of wider wheels on the cards :)

Then decided it was time to go balls to the wall and hit up the peanut/figure 8 now in our little n/a's.
Last night DS hosted an event, wasn't much people there, about average of 10 cars total.

First couple sessions i was stuggling with understeer A LOT, played with psi and dampening.
My RE001's on the rear with less than 50% tread didn't seem to want to lose traction.
Might've been a rear toe issue or the diff loosening up, fuck i don't know but i had fun.

After a couple more sessions i was able to smoke the tyres :)
Started getting better from there, had one heaps good session but forgot to record, spewing :(

Car looks clean. Would look more period correct with the thin silvia aero skirts, instead of those early version 180sx ones.. but I can't knock ya' cause I sold you the skirts!

Same with the 180sx lip, a oem silvia lip would suit it better, but again they aren't easy to come by.

The wheels/tires are perfect in my opinion :)

rixii
21-02-13, 12:26 PM
Yeah I'd like to have both the lip and skirts but they're really hard to come by.
Plus it'd only get hacked up when I'm drifting anyway so no point.

Thanks mate, though I'm opting for 195/55 now instead of 195/60, to fix my scrubbing issues on lock.
