View Full Version : VTEC #2 - Hondas' NSX...

As some people know I have bought an NSX. The S2000 is in getting stripped down atm, and all parts are pre-sold upfront already (for the most part atleast). Built motor is out, old motor is back in, S/c is off - etc etc etc! You'll see it in the future in an upcoming magazine in its final days, but other than that, its being stripped to be sold as (nearly as) stock as possible. If anyone wants an S2000 with some rare exterior parts in the sale, shoot me a PM.

Anyway, stripped the car to sell off because I've bought a new car. An NSX. Its a 94 model, green (such a shit colour to mod!) with tan interior. Unfortunately its an auto, but for the price I paid, I don't really care. I considered doing the conversion until I found it was going to cost $10K. Fuck that. All things relative, $10K buys you an SoS twin turbo kit, which I'd much rather have - but don't worry, I'm not doing that either. This is just a weekender to enjoy with minimal mods. After having an extensively modified car, I hated driving it, I hated getting in and out of it - simply put, I hated it and sighed at the thought of having to drive it - the enjoyment was gone, so after almost 6yrs of ownership, it was time to move on...

Bought a few things already. Sourcing parts is hella-difficult - but I'm trying =). A few pieces in the interior are not the best condition after 17yrs use, so I've managed to buy brand new replacements parts out of Acura, USA. Just waiting on an out-of-stock item that will be in-stock tomorrow and sent out thereafter!

Had the car about 5wks now, but only had the chance to drive it once so far. First weekend it was still in Vic. Second weekend it was here in QLD but no rego and insurance. Third weekend I drove it for about 10KM's and the fourth weekend I've just spent coming back from a week overseas (lol, Auckland, NZ) for work. This weekend I've been struck down with a haneous flu... Just been flat out with work & life and havent had any time to do... anything!

Future Mods:

- Comptech Front Lip. Unfortunately its been discontinued years ago and very very rare, so I may have to have one made up, or go an alternative option.

Otherwise, I've already bought one lip from Japan, but have found another I like instead so I'm trying to buy it instead.

- The same seller in Japan is also selling his side skirts. Trying to buy out of Japan these exact side skirts as we speak.

I've also ordered a set of front indicator lens covers. After seeing a set of genuine Mugen ones on Yahoo Jp sell for over $1K (yes you read right, $1,000) I doubt I will EVER see another set pop up for sale again - and quite frankly I refuse to spend over $1000 on a bit of plastic thats worth $20.... They will look like this but replicas for $50.

Also want to pick up a nice set of coilovers - probably KWV3's as I had them on the S2000 and they were a fantastic coilover.
I was planning to bolt my Work Meisters from the S2000 onto the NSX, but after some research, they appear to be too wide in the front, and too weaker offset in the rear. Can't win.... So unfortunately it looks like I will have to put them up for sale in the near future =( =( I really love my Meisters <3. ATM its on the QLD rego but I'll transfer the [VTEC] plates across in the near future. =)

I've spent the past 2-3 days looking for wheels... So hard to find what I want in the sizes I want.... And anyone who knows me, knows how easy it is for me to find wheels having had 9 or 10 sets prior on the S2000... But this car... whoaaa haha.

Only a few pictures so far to date.. I'll get some better pictures up in a few weeks time. Right now its still in my folks garage with the 2400KM journey from VIC to QLD of dead flies and bugs on it =(

Besides, I'd rather spend such funds elsewhere rather than having a JDMspec'd up car...

Fronts are weak.
Max 8" and +30 - +45
Rears can be aggressive
Rears 9" to 10.5" +28 - +45

Doubt it. It never really had a chance to be advertised. There's an exact car on CarSales for $63K, perhaps that's the car you are thinking of?

$10K. Not likely.

No one ever said modding an NSX is cheap, but they sure are something special. I think they are destined to become a classic like the old 70's GTR. I still think it needs an exhaust though, not so much for the sound but more cause the stock ones look a little crap :P could get a fujitsubo if they make one for this car if you want to keep the sound down.

Its a real shame that these cant be imported anymore, and im not really sure why they are no longer allowed. Has kept local prices pretty high when only a few are ever available in the country for sale and most of them are always an auto. Perhaps people with manual just dont want to sell :P

For what reason? Going from 1 traffic light to the next in .4 seconds faster than normal? Or for Queensland Raceway and not being rewarded by your insurance agency / government for doing the right thing? I'd rather drive a $500 bucket of shit to trash to absolute no end and have no financial burden or worry if anything goes wrong.

Its pointless having HP in this country. I learnt that the hard way after having a potential 500hp built S2000..... at no point can it ever be used, nor can you be rewarded for doing the right thing - so why bother wasting tens of thousands on BS engine mods you don't need.

Weekender is where its at for me =)

^^ Pretty much hey. If you don't get pleasure (rewarding yourself) tracking your modified performance car, don't bother. Driving a modified big HP car on the street is pointless.

+1 to that. Street cars including ones that will get used for only the odd track day just for fun should more be about the enjoyment of driving. They should simply be fun to drive. Theres no point getting into a power battle if you arent competing for anything. What you should think of is what will make the car more enjoyable to drive for you.

Will definately be keeping my eye on this thread to see what you do with the car. I would love to own one of these some day, would be a nice step up in the mid engine family from my mr2 thats for sure! :P

It's cool. I mean, I'm 26 now. I have 2 high speed driving suspensions to my name, and by actual fact it SHOULD be 4 - and I live in QLD - one of the least strict hoon law states in Australia - all within the past 4yrs.. 25 lost demerit points (+/-) and bout $2500 in fines. I want to leave all that behind me with my old car and start fresh from a clean slate with a new car. Guess I'm just getting old :p

Always liked NSXs.
But when you say you picked it up for a good price, how good is good? Don't have to say the price if you don't want to, but as a rough percentage compared to the rest, how much do you think you saved? Reason I asked is, because it's auto I wouldn't even look at it twice unless it was 40%+ cheaper than the rest, and only then to definitely convert to manual if it still works out cheaper than a factory manual after the 10k conversion.
For me there's no point getting a car that I really like unless it's manual. No way I would get a performance car in auto with the intention of keeping it auto.
Each to their own I guess.

Looking forward to the build in any case :)

Always been a fan of the NSX...green is not the easiest colour to mod but i'm sure you'll make it into sweet looking ride. I drive a green Prelude and with little mods here and there, it doesn't look too bad.

My driving history within the past 5yrs is a bit shit... 2 suspensions and about a dozen or so other infringements. Copping $1700/yr from JCI. Would be much cheaper without the driving history and under a Shannons policy.

Glad to see you're not leaving it totally stock, but that you also have a mature attitude to modifying/driving/owning the car in general.

NSX is not a car for stupid driving behaviour or for stupid amounts of horsepower, it's simply about getting a usable amount of power and torque to combine with amazing handling in order to ultimately deliver a supreme driving experience.

I hope that you love every minute with the NSX and that it reinvigorates your love for driving :)

Canada post won't take anything larger than 18" by sea mail so has to come by airmail.

yeah, $500 to airmail 17x9.5 and 17x8's door to door with that schenke mob (never using them again)

D.K.C
16-12-11, 12:41 PM
Thats just more associated costs.

How does that figure?
Postage from Canada to mail forwarding service: ~$100
Mail forwarding service commission: ~$50 (probably a high estimate)
Sea post to Au: ~$600

...you come out about $700 cheaper than airmail, and my estimates are probably higher than reality too..

Hey Brad,
Again Congrats mate on the car, hope your enjoying the car.
After you do your cosmetic mods, I think airbox, suspension,, exhaust and the manual conversion would give you the most thrills. I prefer to keep NA then to supercharge or turbo.
Does your car have Power steering ? I never liked the std steering wheel.
In terms of the wheels shipping I normally pay $500-600 from US for 4 wheels using DB Schenker.
Looking forward to seeing the mods on the car.

Hey Nico!
I'm leaning towards an exhaust. Possibly Comptech or something slightly louder / better performing than stock. Suspension will just be another set of KWV3 coilovers.
I only want bolt on stuff so if a nice 96-98 NSX-T (non green I hope & pray) pops up for sale in manual I can easily unbolt everything & potentially offer a trade + cash adjustment their way.
Being a 94 mine has Power Steer, though at the moment I'm having a glitch with the EPS. After we put in a brand new battery, drove it 5 days then the EPS light came on and the power steer was gone. Pulled the clock fuse, re-inserted and everything was sweet - until the EPS light and subsequent lack of power steering became an issue again about 5 days later. Think I might have a bad speed sensor, so I need to get that sorted out early in the new year. Can't keep pulling the clock fuse every Sunday.. lol.

Re: These wheels... For the sake of an extra $400, I think I'll simply airmail them. They're coming with 215/18's and 275/19's in Kuhmo's KU36 Ecsta US equivalent.. with next to no milage on them.. Simplicity / cost sake I think the extra $400 makes it a worthwhile exercise..

If you have a keen eye you will notice its the same one as from the first page, except I got it 35,000Y cheaper!

Don't know what I've told you all, so I'll just go blah blah blah and update everyone at once!

My brand new interior bits from Acura USA were finally sent after 2 months of fuck arounds. I'd go into this, but I'm on laptop and cbf. Anyway, they arrived last week sometime but are still down the post office. Went to collect them on Friday, but low and behold, Aus Post national holiday for Friday Dec 30th... fuckers!

I have my rear skirts back from the paintshop, looking green and awesome. My sideskirts arrived a while back, but I haven't bolted them on as yet, same with the rear skirts. I picked up a front lip out of Japan a few weeks ago - it landed in Brisbane and cleared customs a few days ago, so I need to pick that up sometime this week. And a few weeks ago I bought a set of CCW wheels out of Toronto... impulse buying, but I just want SOMETHING on the car to get me by for the time being. Bit of hassle, but finally managed to get them sent by airmail out of Toronto... The owner was supposed to send them before Xmas so I'd get them before Christmas, but the freight person went on holidays blah blah blah and isn't back until tomorrow. They will be sent out on Jan 10th and should arrive around the 18th of Jan, just in time for my birthday on the 22nd!
They are a set of CCW SP16A's.

This is the exact set of wheels coming from Toronto:

18x8 front 215/18 and 19x10.5 275/35 all KU36's. Unfortunately they are polished (I really hoped they were brushed looking like in the pics but whatevs).

Today I had a productive New Years day. Dunno about you guys but up here in QLD, it was the most perfect weathered day imaginable.. so I got started on the NSX. Gave it a wash, fixed and replaced all the broken / blown bulbs (fog light / parker and both rear numberplate lights), gave it a clean and took a couple more pics as I havent really taken any at all since moving as I've lost 2 of my lens! I only seem to have one on me the 50mm 1.4. Nice enough lens, but kinda limited to what you can do with it.. I really wanna pick up a 24-105L (or 28 the older one), and with my birthday coming up, I think I might.

Lights all fixed!

I traded my old black Work Meisters (that was a sad day) for a set of (my old imported) polished 3pc Work Meisters. 18x8 +39 all round - mint COND with good tyres for a local friend in a straight swap for his Meisters + AP1 wheels & tyres.... Kinda sitting on these at the moment, because if I don't like the CCW's I'm going to put these on instead for the time being, and hope to pick up a set of 19" 3pc polished Work Meisters... I've been looking but can't find quat! Ideally I'd love a set of HRE's.... but refuse to buy those brand new at $5K USD + post & tyres. F-that! So, we'll see how the car looks in a few weeks time... interior bits n bobs in, lip kit on, wheels fitted.... Between now and then I want to get it serviced, buy a new interior panel so I can run a double din head unit / sat nav / tv screen instead of being stuck with the radio & cassette deck which it currently has!

Anyway, thats my blah blah blah update. Hope you all had a good NYE!

There is a lot to be said about a car that you don't have to worry about defects, voiding your insurance and so on. Just jump in and enjoy. So I can understand your point of view with your build.

My front lip is currently in being painted and I anticipate picking it up Friday morning / Saturday morning and fitting it sometime Sunday.

Purchased a JDM rear bumper today so I can have a slimline numberplate frame, as well as another bumper to screw my Wings West rear skirts onto without damaging my OEM rear skirts.
I'll get it painted when my Type R rear wing *finally* arrives - who knows when... Its been 3 months and 1 failed delivery attempt so far to date.
I've decided I'm going to buy a set of NA2 rear tail lights to freshen up the rear too.
All my interior pieces have arrived and are 95% installed, just left with installing the replacement seats and buying new seatbelts (as mine are filthy from the previous owner).

Magna wagon represent! Its great for lugging wheels and bumpers and shit in. Like atm right now, it has my JDM rear bumper sitting in it out on the street lol.
I like the OEM's too, but they are too small 16/17.
The CCW's look SHIT in photos, but when you see them IRL, they look and suit so much better.
I was enquiring about a set of 19" SSR SP1 9/10 (to break up into pairs and sell when I bought a set of SSR SP1 18's for the front) but they went for a ridiculous amount last night on Yahoo JP. Devo =(

Devo =(

EDIT: YOu bought the BEST M5 shape. So much love for the E39. Hell I even like the E34 over the E60 and (insert latest model code here).

I thought the same, thought the CCW's looked like shit, but they look really nice in person, fill out the guards and nice dish in the rear

Food for thought.

It's a fair amount to do a swap. Searching around on NSXPrime has shown a few to buy a half cut and sell off the rest of the stuff they don't need and just about pays for itself. If I could be assed I'd do it, just a lot of work :S

If it's a 2004, I'm quite sure that the 04 model wasn't sold here in Aus, thus making it eligible for import. But still, could buy a 40k Aus delivered model, drop 100k into it and it'd kick ass, with 30k left over.

Both correct. Can only bring it over as a personal import but then have to show evidence of living over there for 12months I believe. There was one for sale on carsales a few years back that couldn't be complied but it was only going for $20k or so. Should've snapped that thing up when I had the chance.

You can spend thousands of dollars on an older model and make it a beast for sure but I'd rather have a genuine NA2. NA2 NSX-R's are going for more now than they did when they were launched. They were fuckin expensive then too.... Those NSX-R's they use on BMI would be worth a god damn fortune.

Mmmmmmm yes those S-Zero's were rather nice. I've loved this car since Gran Turismo 1 on Playstation. Was one of the most difficult cars to drive but since then I was hooked. I love them stock, supercharged, turbocharged but end goal would be a bare bones NA2 on a set of decent wheels and upgrade the brakes to something a bit more worthy. I love the fact Tsuchiya or Gan-San could pilot one of these things to a 12.7 1/4 stock and the NSX-R lapped the ring in a touch under 8mins. That's massive considering the lack of outright power it has.

The guy from Noosa liked the car, but has his heart set on a 91 in Sydney from a dealership with 40,000KM less in absolute fastidious condition, so I think he'll end up going that way. He really loved the green but and the suiting lip kit / wheels etc - so there's a slim chance I guess but it'd be a heart instinct, and not a head instinct, and he struck me as the kind of guy that would only do a head instinct type buy.

His only complaint was the brakes felt a bit soft - having not driven nay others I can't compare though.

All is pretty quiet in the market place late, so I've decided to buy a few things lately for my own enjoyment.

I bought an NSX-R wing. Always wanted one. Bought one. Hated it. Has since grown on me.
Next purchase is a later model rear lower bumper half. Rarely come up for sale 2nd hand in the US, let alone Japan or Australia. Sucks... So I'll have to buy new out of America and have it shipped over.
I fixed my front lip. $400 later in repairs and paint. Only to smash it up real good less than 24hrs later going into an undulation in the ground at my parents back garage..... Fucken sigh.

Anyway, last weekend I took the car out for a detail sesh. Came up great. Here's a few pics!

Although I'm currently posting a WTB thread on NSXPrime for an 02+ or DownForce rear lip (very similiar to above, just a bit cleaner around the numberplate surround)

This is the 02+ rear:

I've actually just listed my CCW's up for sale. Had them for a year, time for something fresh hopefully.

If I can sell them that would be fantastic. Probably pick up a set of LM's, S1's or SP1's in 17/18 or 18/19.

Problem is for wheels on this car, the front is Honda spec and the rear is GTR spec and staggered diameters.

Example:

F: 18x8 +25 (flush)
F: 18x8 +40 (commonplace)
F: 18x9 +23 (hellaflush)

R: 19x9.5 +20 (flush)
R: 19x10 +40 (commonplace)
R: 19x10.5 -7 (hella flush)

18X9 +23 (2.75" lip) and rears 19X10.5 -7 (5.3" lip) looks a little something like this:

If my FB was active, I'd link you to my NSX album. About 60 photos of sex. LOL.

I don't DD it. I have a station wagon which I DD and even that I don't DD as I work about 1KM from where I live, so mostly I just walk. The NSX gets put under the house in storage (after I remove the front lip as its too low to get up the kerb and into the driveway otherwise), and the wagon is kept out on the main road.

All cars tramline to some degree, depends on the road, surface, tyres etc etc. Its not too bad. The only issue is I've had my front lip repaired and resprayed 2 times now. Last time it only lasted 36hrs because of an undulation in the ground as I was parking it in my parents back garage. It used to get in there, until I lowered it. Now the undulation has cracked the front lip from digging in to the ground upon scraping after I just had it fixed and painted. Lost my shit that afternoon.

Will have to get it fixed and done again - but this time at a new workshop as the last time they only bogged it up, and where they bogged it is where it cracked in the garage. It needs to be fixed with fibreglass, properly.....

PS: Buy it , so I stop spending money on it and move onto other things. I'll do you a good deal for a QLD local!! I'll even throw in the plates for free!

Haha man looking at those recent photo's above, this thing definitely looks the goods. Will be interesting to see what wheel choice you actually end up with. The sizes on this look just about spot on IMO, just not a fan of the coloured wheel nuts. I've seen this car once at a Downshift meet and pretty much lost my shit.

I'd be interested in buying but I just have to have a manual. Honda did a terrible thing releasing this car regardless of spec with an auto.

^ Its funny you say that, if you jumped on NSXPrime, or know by word of NSX mouth there are 3 or 4 boosted NSX's here in SE Qld alone, two twin turbo setups and 2 Comptech supercharged... If only I had an infinite sum of money...

So, Christmas is over, and I've decided to keep it a bit longer, so its no longer listed for sale.
For Xmas as you guys know I bought myself a Taitec R wing. I really wanted one for such a long time, and when I put it on, I hated it.... It has however, since grown on me and is still on the car. Now I still need to buy a DF or NA2 rear lower bumper half to complete the rear look.....

After Xmas I got some gift cards and yesterday I finally got a chance to use them, so I splashed out and bought some minor camera gear. I already had a Canon 40D with a 24-105L (and a 50 1.4 with matching filters) however I didn't have any filters for the 24-105L. Being a big fan of the Polarizer filter in my previous camera's I splashed out and bought a $130 Hoya Cir PL filter to fit the 24-105L, along with a battery grip, some batteries and a new tripod.

Since I was at the shops spending up on gift cards, I decided to have the car washed while I did the shopping and saw a movie (Jack Reacher. Eh... 7/10, some good giggles but a lil silly over all). I parked the car outside for the night and decided today I was going to use the new camera stuff on the car, since it was now clean and all. Unfortunately as it was parked outside for the night, and the car wash place did a lousy job for $75, it was covered in water ring marks..... sigh. Thought about cleaning it, but figured with the Polarizer filter for the camera, it'd probably block out most of the rain ring drop marks in the photos.

Silly me forgot to take any thongs / shoes with me so I was kinda rushed as it was burning hot concrete and bitchumen I was standing on in the middle of the day.. So we're hitting high 30's to low 40's, during midday and I decide to stand on bitchumen and concrete for a 1/2hr burning the bottom of my feet because I'm a dumbass that was too stupid to find a pair of thongs.... Who the eff does that?!

I didn't do any detailed pics of the interior, engine bay or boot / trunks as they are stock, so here's a few lightly edited pics from today's mini shoot / test day. I never realised before these pictures just how much the NSX reminds me of an FD RX7 or a C5 Vette from the pics below...

And yes, the soles of my feet were still stinging for about 3-4hrs after the fact...

I like the blue Work lugs. They are the sole piece of ownership I have left from my old S2000, and being I had about 10 sets of wheels for that car, there is no better testament for admiration than the lugs that held them on. =) I have thought about switching to a set of black Work lugs (fuck Rays and their cheap aluminium used once, scratched and bent to shit quality) but I kinda like the blue to be honest.

The blue on the plates.... again the old S2000 plates / colour. Its simply too much money (I think its $300 now to change colours for prestige QLD plates) to spend on something so meaningless as a plate colour change. Maybe in the future when cosmetically everything else is done and there is "nothing else left", but for now, they stay as they are because I'd rather put money towards other purposeful things.

Hell yeah man love that booty. So much to like about it. The wing looks good on. The stock one is a tad too subtle to really attract attention but the new one sets it off quite nicely.

I've seen a silver NSX with a turbo setup go around QR a couple of years ago. Thing hauled ass on the day, nothing touched it but the IC setup on it was a little strange and I wasn't a fan of it really. Back when I was roaming the streets in my Prelude I had the opportunity to stalk a wide bodied black, turbo NSX also but the interior was ruined with speakers everywhere. There was an NA1 with NA2 facelift on carsales about 2yrs ago, orange in colour. Had nice interior, GT-C's and BBK. Just about everything you'd need except it was auto. A chap on the MR2 forum ended up with it as a present from his wife. Lucky SOB.

I know all of those cars you're talking about!

The silver one was done in Sydney by IS Motorsports. I met the owner at a BBQ a few years ago up Mt Cootha. Funny bloke, worked in Dubai during its boom period. He has 2 (or maybe 3 now) NSX's that he owns.. Unfortunately the silver had a wee bit of an accident a few weeks ago @ QR.

http://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt29/s2krazy/nsx/facebook_-392644104jpg.jpg

The black widebody turbo was for sale on CarSales for ages about 2-3yrs ago. He only wanted $50's K for it - bargain. It was in Sunnybank. I dunno what happened to that car or where it went, it just disappeared..

The Imola Orange Pearl NSX was a 91 converted to NA2. The former owner was a member on OzHonda, it too was for sale for ages, atleast 12 months. He was the same guy who owned the first all genuine Amuse WB S2000 back in the day.

Such a shame about the silver NSX but not really surprising. That thing was quick, would've been a handful on the track. NA2's are so sexy when done right. I hate the flamboyant kits and huge wheels people put on them though.

Serious question as I know the NSX's don't put out that much power to the wheels but what "felt" faster and what was actually faster out of the S2000 and your NSX? Probably a tough comparo given the S2K 6spd and long ratio's of the NSX's auto but lately I've been drawn towards an S2000. I've been in one, it was quick-ish to 140 but didn't feel quick.

s2krazy
02-02-13, 07:04 PM
I can't really compare. My old S2000 was 420+whp and used to spin 3rd on the highway at 120+.

I guess even stock all those years ago, the S2000 "felt faster" because of top down effect and noticable VTEC cross over. The NSX is a luxo GT type car - does everything well but with such a large luxo cabin speed isn't noticed. I regularly do 120 on the highway without even realising it because it feels like you're doing about 80 or maybe 90.

60yr old gent from Victoria came up, loved it and drove it back 1/2 an hour later.

2 final pictures of the car prior to sale. I spent about $1K getting it all schmick. $430 full detail inside / out / wheels / engine bay / boot / front boot claybar, polish, wash, wash etc etc. Put the new seats in. New steering wheel and shifter, and repaired and resprayed the front lip.

I would of rated it 9.2/10 on the day.

Lost points for dirty seatbelts and slow electric windows - but at $600ea for a window reg and $600ea for a seatbelt I was happy to sell it as it was - an 18yr old car.

The afternoon before sale.

Sold the VTEC plates tonight.
Gone to an S2000 owner.

I'd like an F355, but I think I'll prioritize a bit instead.
