View Full Version : The WINgon R+

09-11-11, 08:41 PM
So i picked this up a few months back from a lady in the country.

Its a 98 wagon r+.

Although its the upper model it does not have air con ( that was a dealer option... )

Though it DOES have:

-1.0 twin cam 16 valve K series engine yO!
-A 5 speed super sport* manual trans (*not actually sporty ratios at all)
-2, yes 2...cupholders ( very happy with these because my bb4 & eg hatches lacked the power to keep a cup stable)
-Seats that can fold down to a bed...giggity
-Possibly the smallest wheel arches ever made, ever.
-African inspired tribal interior design material throughout the car, Sydney would love it.

i didnt really take any photos of it when i brought it for obvious reasons.

though here is one:

ok, so the only things i have changed as of now are:

-HID 8000k
-Removed roof racks & rear granny bar
-Debadged excl. Wagon R+ decal
-14" mesh rims (which are now sold due to the offset being too high, think it was a +35 lol)
-Beaks Bar (custom bracket which bolts to rear sway bar)
-JDM tite number plate relocation
-Front lip (which is actually an EZ-LIP)

09-11-11, 08:59 PM
Gonna put this next to my car and my cappuccino would look big i think!

I wish i had cupholders! Got more pics?

I'd love to see this at a meet one day

09-11-11, 09:03 PM
What is a jdm tite number plate relocation

09-11-11, 10:15 PM
Love it!
Super charger ???

09-11-11, 10:20 PM

14-11-11, 10:01 PM
Haha awesome! What are you gonna do? Bolt on flares? :)

14-11-11, 10:09 PM
What PCD is the car?

14-11-11, 10:11 PM
bolt on flares are the plan.

and my car is 4x100

16-11-11, 12:38 PM
Tyd, if you can help me find a way to get more camber then yes, it will have more camber.
As for being lower coilovers are on the cards

With the WagonR and a lot of other kei cars that are fwd, to camber them, they cut the dead axle and weld it back together.
There's a company on YAJ in mainland Japan that will custom make them for you. You send the axle, tell them what degree of camber you want. They'll also lower it for you.
There have been some on UpGarage also. Some modified, some aftermarket. I've had a hard time finding one for my car, but there's not as much suspension stuff for the CT.
I did end up buying one for the MC from UpGarage to see if it would work, but it won't.

This is the one I bought. Yea can see what I mean by them cutting it and welding back together.
I don't know if it'll fit yours or not, but if you want to take some measurements of yours, I we could find out.

also, are you planning to use the regular bolt on flares like you see on almost all the nissans? or...?
I have a spare set of flares I was going to use, but the new body kit I got comes with some, so I don't need these.
They'll fit yours, but the right rear would need to be cut a little around where the door opens.

Thanks alot for the info :) do you know what mm the flares are?

16-11-11, 11:10 PM
Thanks alot for the info :) do you know what mm the flares are?

They are about 40mm

16-11-11, 11:40 PM
Ok thanks, im pretty sure i want the rivet style ones, but ill have to photoshop it up

16-11-11, 11:45 PM
No worries, if I don't sell them, I'll just take them back to upgarage after the new kit goes on.
I would still use them, but they won't fit against the bumpers with the kit, the others are made for the kit.

Here's a test fit picture without the skirts. Got some work to do, then going to get the whole thing painted.

17-11-11, 12:13 AM
Thanks for that tyd!

May be able to get some cheap parts, though for the whole car he is asking way too much...

17-11-11, 06:31 PM
ok so here's a very tiny update untill i get the adapters.

before & after,

there is just so much caked on shit that keeps coming off, it's a mission...

19-11-11, 02:29 AM
Looking good.

btw, I'm not sure how the rust is with cars where you're at, but just a heads up, on all the first gen wagonR, the common rust spots are
Hood, across the front flat part
Door frame, above the windows on the door
and of course around the edges of the engine bay.

just wanted to give you a heads up. Took me a while to find a hood in good condition for mine.

19-11-11, 11:44 AM
Thanks for that, though . My wagon was a one owner elderly ladies car :) 75,000 ks on the clock when i brought it. Though i will have a look for rust but the condition is perfect.

20-11-11, 11:09 PM
Going to speak to a few panel shops about how much guard flaring is possible with the wagon, im guessing ill meed atleast 30mm. If not i will need to look seriously at overfenders.

29-11-11, 02:24 PM
what attracted you to buy this shitbox?

29-11-11, 02:32 PM
And the fun begins.

29-11-11, 02:50 PM
Haha. Awesome

29-11-11, 02:55 PM
It's not a personal attack, it's a genuine question with hate directed at this car in general.

looking forward to your answer

29-11-11, 02:57 PM

29-11-11, 03:06 PM
I brought it because it was low ks, beautiful condition and it can print money. I dont care.

29-11-11, 03:19 PM

29-11-11, 05:01 PM

29-11-11, 05:18 PM

14-12-11, 09:44 PM
ok, so over fenders are almost here & i need some opinions.

would you say this line is the adhesive??

here is a pic with the stock fender on:

20-12-11, 11:28 AM
So a small update:

The 45mm overfenders arrived from japan yesterday, also picked up a personal wheel.

Coilovers should arrive within a fortnight.

25-12-11, 05:46 PM
installed the over fenders:

25-12-11, 06:52 PM
are those fenders specific to that car or multifit?

25-12-11, 08:59 PM
Model specific

04-01-12, 10:34 AM
Looking good.
Have you got the suspension yet? I'm curious how the quality is.

05-01-12, 04:07 PM
The coilovers arrived yesterday,

Ill be finishing the installation tonight,

Once i play around with the camber and damper settings ill let you know how they perform.

Do you happen to know if the ct boss kits fit the ma/mb?

I want to install my personal.

05-01-12, 04:18 PM
Right on!

I really want to say yes, but it's more of an assumption. The one I have on my car now is from the Alto Works, I had one before from one of the kei-cargo vans.
If youre not going to put it on within the next few days, I can test my other one on one of the ma/mb in the junkyard.

08-01-12, 11:27 AM
thanks, that would be appreciated. The personal isn't going on for atleast a month. As are the equips, i have alot of personal commitments at the moment.

So this is the fronts:

i didn't take a photo of the rear setup but basically its a spring with a sleeve kit and adjustable shock.

Im really happy with the coilovers, the handling is way beyond what i expected, though im still playing with the settings.

08-01-12, 01:16 PM
looks good, wheels need on asap!

08-01-12, 03:14 PM
spottoed you at homemaker on fri night haha
looks good man

08-01-12, 05:53 PM
Yeah i thought you and the supra were on here.

The lexus sounded nice.

10-01-12, 10:43 AM

I broke a hubcap

10-01-12, 11:07 AM

I broke a hubcap

Get those wheels on man!
Loving this car.
As said before, I would much rather this over some wannabe jdm eg civic with a cannon.

10-01-12, 11:53 AM
I had 2 "jdm" eg's in the past and this thing is alot better.

The wheels will go on asap most likely march im just about the move houses so new cash flow is tied up at the moment.

10-01-12, 11:57 PM
so the rear was setup like crap so after work got the help of a mate and now im very happy with the handling.

shi shi bog
11-01-12, 05:41 PM
Care to elaborate on that?

12-01-12, 12:00 AM
Care to elaborate on that?

The rear was very bouncy.

13-01-12, 12:54 PM
According to the brouchure, the car has electronic steering assist, whereas the base model came without it.

Is disabling this going to disable all power steering also? Any ideas?

16-01-12, 06:25 AM
That's a good question. I would assume it would be like steering with the car off.
You could disconnect it and try. The unit is under the dash on the column. Looks like a big windshield wiper motor.

Btw, the extra hub adapter i have fits the Suzuki kei van things. Tried in on a van and one of the little trucks and a wagonr. All worked.

16-01-12, 11:40 AM
Thanks for the info!

What year boss kit should i be looking for?

26-01-12, 02:01 PM
Same as your year. 96-98

26-01-12, 05:53 PM

29-01-12, 04:30 AM
No problem.
So anything new? Mine is getting painted now, should have it back tomorrow. Then I need to put the led lights on the new bumper and some different rear suspension, then sell it.

04-02-12, 07:12 PM
dont sell it, its awesome.
also how much are you getting the rear led lights for?
show me when you get it back.

& for the progress...

thanks to otomoto for these:

& put some new tyres on the equips

this was taken at the wheel adapter store, his getting back to me during the week with a price.

05-02-12, 09:44 PM
Cut & folded guards today & disabled electronic steering. Much more feedback.

06-02-12, 10:39 PM
I am only selling it because I will be moving back to the USA in march. If only I had more time...

The led tail lights, I made myself. I spent about $60 on LEDs, resistors and circuit board, then $30 for the clear stock style tails. I had to make my own since the body kit i have doesn't have any mounting points for the stock lights, and they're shaped different. They have led tails at upgarage for the wagonr but I don't like the way they look at all.

Here she is now. My buddy wanted to practice painting, this was his third paint job... not bad considering the circumstances.
I still need to put the skirts and flares on, but I need to trim the inside of the rear flares since they hit the tires (this is why I put the stock wheels on the rear.

The reverse lights now look purple. They are Bright white LEDs, but behind the red lens, they look purple.

Here's some of the process. This was my first time ever messing with LEDs.

oh those lights are cool.

also, i want that wing! ASAPPPPPPPPP

good idea about trimming the fenders, would appreciate some pics of the process ;)

Thanks. :)
I belive they make that wing for the wide also. It's made by Takeoff Cross. I see them often on the UpGarage site.
I'll take some pics when I do the trimming, but my flares are different from yours. I was going to cut the quarter panels/gaurds, but since I am selling it, I didn't want to have the buyer worried about passing inspection. They would need to change the license plate to a 500 plate. The way I'm doing it, they only need to pop the flares off for the inspection and it can stay a yellow plate.

BTW, the rears look real nice on yours. I love how it's coming.

edit, I didn't see any wingsat upgarage for the wide, but I may have missed them.

and here are some tail lights on YAJ. I didn't see any on UpGarage this time.

07-02-12, 12:35 PM
Cheers, for the fronts i cut atleast an inch off the gaurds and then folded it, also folded the inside of the wheels arch.
I didnt cut any on the rear because its part of the body :(.
24mm Adapters are ready this saturday & im changing the tyres for 165/65's.

Just need to find a height where the tyres dont hit the over fenders...

07-02-12, 12:38 PM
Go the van, needs more seat basket though! I like it with the works! Killin it!

07-02-12, 12:48 PM
Cheers! You bringing the supra to the meet on the 18th?

07-02-12, 01:29 PM
Possibly, i have a gig with my band on that night so ill see how i go..

07-02-12, 02:25 PM
No drama! & if i need more seat basket, then you need more low

11-02-12, 07:54 PM
so got some 165/65's on today. look much better.

also went to pick up the adapters.

found out the wheels need to be machined to fit the adapters.

so picking up the wheels sat morning. hopefully it's all good for the meet.

17-02-12, 12:14 AM
Got the wheels + adapters on today, adjusted the height and camber a bit.

19-02-12, 04:57 PM
so spent quite a bit of time rolling the rear guards & modifying the inside of the front wheel wells.

this is how it looks now.

23-04-12, 12:36 AM
Car is looking pretty sweet man. What did you end up using for the fender lining?

23-04-12, 07:59 AM
Cheers, JUNN suggested that rubber welting from clark rubber and that's what i ended up using. Installing it was a bit frustrating mainly alligment issues

23-04-12, 08:32 PM
Interesting day today.

Some silly billy left a cat converter laying in the middle of the road.

Result was a hole in my gearbox!

i'm feeling some driving lights where those vents are? i reckon it'd look very sporty then. and a front lip but that's a given.

pics or lies about the gearbox

I should have taken pics!

I tell you what jace, see me at the meet sat ill show you the gearbox mend.

As for front lips, the fronts pretty low already & i took my garden edging front lip off.

I did look on yahoo auctions but front lips arent that great.

Driving lights wont happen because i despise them.

I friggin love these cars. Always wanted a turbo one, but they're all mainly Auto's over here in NZ. Ended up buy a Cube instead. just as boxy, but a lil bit bigger. Love this build, and love the haters it generates! excellent excellent.
