So I've been banned for 4 months or something. I can't even remember why I got banned. Something happened in spam thread and some other shit but yeah.

Anyway, this is what I've been upto during my time away from JDMST. This is going back 2-3 months now.

As most know, I've been stripping the Stagea back to sell for the past few weeks, and the original plan was to sell the Stagea before I bought anything else. Somehow though I can never seem to stick to plans that I set.

During the weeks of preparing the Stagea for a new home, I've been trolling the classifieds, looking at all sorts of cars within my price range. There was this one car I was eyeing out for quite a while. I was hoping that when the Stagea went, it would still be available. I'd constantly check it every few days to see if it were still on Carsales too.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_6890.jpg

Two weeks ago, just before I finished work I did my new "routine" of checking the classifieds and that car I was keen on. When I found it, something was quite different Ö the price had been halfed! At first I was a little skeptical on why the price had been dramatically dropped so I called the owner, Steve straight away to have a chat about it.

It turns out that Steve was re-locating to Canada for two to four years so there was no point keeping the car.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_6896.jpg

Figuring out my options I decided to check it out. It looked a million times better in person than the Carsales advert. I was expecting some problems here and there but my expectations were blown away when he took me for a spin in it. The fierce acceleration of the GT3071R had the 255 tyres struggling for traction quite a few times, during the drive I was constantly thinking how off-tap this car was.

After discussions with Steve about his R33, he had it stored at a friends house until I could get my finances sorted.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_6898.jpg

Saturday was the big day, it was time to pick up the Skyline. So Nick, Yuan and I headed out to Berowra to get the new RIH beast. Thanks again guys for the help, couldn't of done it without you!

After finalising the purchase I decided to take it to my trusty mech, Anthony to scope it out as there were a few things I wasn't sure on.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_6900.jpg

After visiting Dahtone Racing with the new toy, we decided to grab some lunch and give the car a quick wash. Yeah I know it's missing a front bar, it came with a complete Top Seceret body kit upon purchase, but I've got something else in mind.

So, what's next you ask? Well first up I'll replace all the fluids in the car, then source a new kit while tidying up all the little bits and pieces that I'm not happy with, which I've already started doing. I would like to get it all sorted within two months, funds permiting.

I plan to keep this car for quite a while, but as I said I never seem to stick to my own plans. Though I can't wait to get out to Eastern Creek in this thing!

Since the move I’ve been riding the bike quite a bit further, it’s now a 15KM round trip. It’s good though because I’m getting into a nice routine of going to bed early and getting to work on time ha ha.

Anyway with Winter slowly creeping away, the sunlight has been out a little longer. So this is what I’ve managed to do when I get home from work before the sun sets.

My steering wheel and hello kitty horn button have already made their way onto the car, but thats about all for now. I’ve focused on stripping everything back that I’m not happy with and well, starting from scratch.

The dash surrounds were painted a burgundy colour (the car was once the OEM burgundy colour, then black, and now blue) So I was going to replace them, but Nick came up with the idea of sticker-bombing it, so I say why not? It’s cheaper than buying new panels.

Another thing that I wanted to rectify was the Greddy Profec B boost controller, along with the HKS turbo timer placement. Originally they were just tucked into the fuse box section under the dash, but I’m going to move them in the bottom din panel.

So yeah that’s where I’m at, at the moment fixing all those little things while waiting for some parts to arrive … like some new gauges, I can’t read those Blitz things for the life of me.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/I-hate-wires.jpg

Slow and steady wins the race, or so they say. I’m slowly going through all the aftermarket wiring in the car, getting rid of the un-neccisarys and other things. Check out all the junk that come from behind the head unit!

Although I hate almost everything electrical, it has been a good way to “know” the car, how the work was done and the like. Soon enough I’ll know it inside out which will be handy for when things err, happen. I’ve finally pissed off the Blitz gauges and decided where the Race Techs will go. I was given a gauge holder as a spare when I bought the car, and thankfully it covers all the holes from the previous setup.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Gauge-positioning.jpg

At this stage I’ve relocated the boost controller, wiring in my old Pivot shift light, sorted out the head unit wiring (Nick did it actually) and waiting on a few parts to get the interior back together. I still have a few things to do, like remove the HKS turbo timer, and trace many many wires that look useless, like the red wires on the right above.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Powerhouse.jpg

While were at it, here’s an engine bay shot. No expense has been spared in here by the looks of things, hosting a stack of quality parts and interesting modifications too (like the twin thermos). I won’t be changing much in this department.

Still got a long way to go until this is rolling on the street or track, with the list of things needing attention just getting longer. It adds to all the fun though right?

Sorry for the lack of posts on Run It Hard guys, we still have no internet connected at the new house, and I’ve been hauling ass the past week to get the Skyline tip-top.

So with the next DS event just around the corner, I wasted no time on getting stuck into the Skyline. At first I had a decent sized list of things to do but then it just snowballed. When I completed one thing, I managed to rectify two more things.

One of the most important things was the replacement of the steering rack. The previous rack was leaking pretty bad and as we all know, dropping fluid at the track is a big no-no so out it went for a second hand piece from Skyline Spares.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_2421.jpg

While all the fluid is out, I’ve decided to hook up a power steering cooler (which I’m still waiting on). I also installed the KTS inner and outer tie rods that previously bought for the Stagea.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Tie-rod-comparison-2.jpg

The 6mm spacer built into the KTS tie rod should give me a nice amount of extra lock. The great thing about the KTS rods is that there is a little more thread then the OEM tie rods. So it would be possible run another 6mm spacer safely.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Outer-tie-rod.jpg

That’s not all I’ve got planned foe extra lock. I’ve got some extended LCA’s in the works that should give me some pretty spastic lock combined with the KTS goodies.

Stay tuned for the next post about getting the Skyline ready for skids!

Thursday afternoon, the Skyline was finally off jack stands. At this point all the adjustable arms and steering rack were installed, along with engine oil and filters changed.

During the preparation of getting the car ready for skids, quite a few parts I ordered arrived on time, and some didn’t.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_2461.jpg

I ordered these gear and handbrake boots a couple of weeks ago for when I get the interior looking schmick. They are from Top Gaiters on EBay.

They are made from leather and double stitched in any colour you desire. I went with black leather with blue stitching. Best of all I got the set cheaper than you’d buy just a gear boot from local stores.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_2463.jpg

The extended LCA’s I picked up from Skylines Australia forums off a guy in Victoria. These bits of gear give me more track, clearance, camber and a chance to gain more lock.

Next step will be to grind the lock stoppers down on the standard knuckle, but first I want to drift it and see what it’s like at the moment.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_2460.jpg

The power steering cooler I ordered arrived a few days after. I decided to put this in another time as it’s not neccesary at the moment.

I also happened to score a free vice the other day so I’ll be able to make up some mounts for the cooler sometime soon.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_2462.jpg

One thing I haven’t been able to do at past events is record in car footage as I only had a roll cage camera mount. I made sure I could get some footage this time so I ordered a heavy duty suction base to attach to my camera mount. I’ve used this mount before when the guys at Camzilla put a Drift HD pro recorder on the Stagea for a few runs.

It’s an extremely sturdy piece and should show 0 movement when recording, which means near perfect footage! Great service from them too, I ordered it on Monday afternoon and received it the following Wednesday. I can’t wait to use it!

With only two days to spare, things were getting pretty close for preparation of the Driving Sports full day event. At this point my alignment was way out of whack so that’s what was next on the agenda.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_2469.jpg

I’ve been dealing with Jax tyres in Smithfield for about two years now, as they are literally down the road from my work. Micheal, Jamie and the guys there are extremely helpfull and won’t bat an eye to stretching tyres or aligning slammed cars, like my old MX-5. Generally, Saturdays are pretty busy for tyre shops and Jax Smithfield is no exception. Though the boys still made room for the R33 to get looked over and knocked it over very quickly.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_2474.jpg

Getting the car there was another bloke that I’ve met through work. I once helped Peter from Camel Towing source some gearbox bearings and he gave me his card.

Peter is very professional when it comes to towing. I specified what time the car needed to be picked up and he was there to the dot. The car was on the truck and off to it’s destination within 5 minutes, Which in my eyes is exceptional as I’ve had quite a few towie’s take forever when getting cars on their trucks.

Not only is he a genuine, honest bloke. Peter’s prices are extrememly competitive too, for an example he beat all other quotes I had by $40! Peter has currently reconstructed Camel Towing and is now only doing after hours (6pm onwards) and Weekends.

If you need a towie for whatever reason, don’t hesitate to give Peter a call on 0434-434-434.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/IMG_2470.jpg

This is the R33′s current lock after the wheel alingment. Considering it’s quite a conservitive alignment I think it isn’t too bad. I should get a few more degrees quite easily once I grind the stoppers down. But before I do that I have to figure out a strange problem I have with the steering rack. It seems that it’s not centred as the right side will touch the stoppers, but the left wont. Wierd.

The next blog entry will be results from tomorrows event, here’s hoping I don’t break anything!

Stay tuned!

What an action packed day the 29th was! The following night I was up in anticipation, I just couldn't stop thinking about getting out to the track once again. I finally managed to get to bed at around 3am. Then it was all systems go at 7am.

I got to the track at 8am, I think I was the third or fourth person there. Waiting for inspection and briefing was hard, I just wanted to drift (as did Ben, Yuan, Dave and Julie). The first run out there I just let it rip, and it felt so damn good to do so!

Enjoy the video guys, more updates of the day to follow.

A lot of shit went down at the recent Driving Sports event, there were a few prangs and almost a punch on, yep you heard right. A bunch of sick coconuts thought they’d try drift around a spun car, and ended up crashing into him. They then had the audacity to threaten the poor bloke when it was their fault in the first place.

I don’t get it, if you can’t accept the fact that your car could possibly be a write-off as soon as you hit the track, then don’t bother coming. These coconuts were just causing trouble the whole day, not obeying the rules set by Driving Sports and being just plain tools. Grass roots is about having fun, learning and hanging out, not this crap.

Anyway, these two fellas I’m about to talk about are the complete opposite, you could call them Driving Sports veterans, at every event since, well pretty much the beginning of it all. Though Yuan and Ben don’t seem to have the best of luck.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_2484.jpg

[B]One car was towed to the event that day, and three came back on a tow-truck. Both Yuan and Ben had problems that put their day to an end quite early. Ben hit the curb while doing the track in reverse and Yuan split an inter-cooler hose (which he managed to fix) then broke his throttle cable!

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_2487.jpg

Check that out, Ben completely destroyed a tie rod and lower control arm, luckily I had some spares at home and we managed to fix Ben’s car during the night. Yuan’s car had to wait for the following day though, as we couldn’t find a throttle cable.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_2490.jpg

Both cars were easy enough fixes and it doesn’t discourage the guys at all, they can’t wait to get back out there. When they do, I reckon they’ll be doing what they do best … break shit!

That maroon console surround was one of the many things that I didn’t like about the R33, and this weekend I’ve done something about it. Nick came up with the great idea of stickerbombing the shit, at first I was a little iffy about it, but I’m glad I went through with it.

I bought some stickers a few weeks ago, and I finally had some spare time on my hands. So out came the surround and I loaded up over 100 stickers on it. Looks pretty cool don’t you think? I did the door handle cups too for good measure.

If anyone is interested in getting something like this done to their ride, shoot me an email and I’ll be able to sort something out for you.

Sweet f**k all has been happening the past week. I’ve done a few little things to the Skyline but nothing really blog worthy. Been enjoying the nice Spring weather, checked out a few events … actually came back from one a few hours ago.

The Driftmob – Project D drift day held at WSID (Eastern Creek drag racing section), it wasn’t bad at all huh! It’s one event I’d love to take my car out to when I get the chance.

Next week I start a new job, and the week after I get my licience back. Exciting times for me at the moment.

Since I’ve got stuff all going on at the moment, I thought I’d talk about what my upcoming plans are in a little more detail. I’m getting my licience back in a few weeks and I’m going to dance with the devil … I’m going to register the Skyline shortly after and push my luck with the authorities.

When I can legally drive it on the street, I’ll get the car on a dyno and see what the Haltech E11 is doing. I’d like to get out to as many events as possible, while preparing for the big one in November, The Raceline 2 day Matsuri at Wakefield.

One of the many things I’d like to do is piss off the HICAS that I still have in the R33. Instead of using a conventional HICAS lock bar, I’ve decided to take another approach. Some might remember I was trying to sell an S14 subframe that I bought for the Stagea a while ago, well I still got it and it’s going to make it’s way into the Skyline. That way I can completely remove HICAS and all the heavy shit that goes with it.

The subframe will need a bit of a tidy up though, so I’ll be replacing the standard bushes with Midnight Mods solid subframe risers and I may even strengthen the subframe before I bolt it up.

One convieniant thing about ditching all the HICAS is that I can use one of the lines for the power steering cooler I still need to install.

Some other things I’d like to purchase and install in the car before Matsuri is a half or full cage, harness, a shitload of wheels/tyres and whatever else comes along the way.

Moving to the world of RB’s has been great! they are an awesome engine that love limiters, can make great power on stock internals and sound dope! but one thing that has shit me from day one is the manifold positioning.

Working on the engine bay on the MX-5 is as easy as it comes, but that’s not the only reason I opted for a forward facing plenum. It poped up cheap! The Greddy unit will neaten the engine bay up, reduce my intercooler piping and make quicker spark plug changes.

Should be all sweet right? we’ll soon find out.

The weather in Sydney last weekend was pretty shitty, sunny all week and stinking hot on the Friday, it looked like the weekend would of been pretty rad! but once again mother nature trolled us.

Anyway, Nick was bored as on Sunday so we decided to get cracking on the car’s rear end.

Within an hour or so, the whole rear assembly was unbolted and on the driveway. Originally we were going to bolt it back up and slap the new sub frame in, but have decided to get some other things done first.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Old-rear-subframe.jpg

I need to get some bushes for the rear knuckle, which will let me run traction arms and completely ditch the HICAS system. I’m still tossing up whether to replace all the bushes in the sub frame too, and undecided on shimming, or replacing the diff for a 2 way unit.

I scored some cheap as chips ISC coil overs too, so I’m waiting on them to arrive as well.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/New-subframe.jpg

As of yesterday, I scored myself a Nismo 2 way LSD, so hopefully I'll have it all in the car this long weekend, and ready for a "shakedown" at EC on the 15th.

For those wondering, I've still got the Stagea. It's been on the market for a couple of months now and I haven't had much interest in it unfortunately. In saying that maybe it is a good thing I haven't sold it yet.

Since the whole loosing my licence thing, a lot of shit has gone down. I've moved out, and scored an awesome new job which means I can afford to keep both the Skyline and Stagea. I'll admit, the Stagea is the most practical car I've owned, it has saved my ass hundreds of times and well, I'd like to keep it that way.

So, I'm thinking of just having it as the daily, lowered on some nice wheels … continue with my subframe swap and add a tow bar on the back for when "shit happens" to the Skyline.

I miss how it used to look.

“When it rains, it pours” is something I have been saying quite a bit lately. Reason why is if any shit goes down on this R33, it will. It was painstaking, getting this sub frame in but I am happy to report that I’ve finally done it with stacks of help from both John and Nick.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_2605.jpg

The HICAS ball joints finally gave way to countless beating I gave it while Nick heated the knuckle. I resorted to cutting them with a hack saw to weaken them, and break the seal they had in the knuckle. The next part that held me back is a doosey!

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_2613.jpg

[B]I was sent the wrong bushes! So for now I have to make do with what I have and get the right bushes. This was a pain in the ass and probably the only thing of the sub frame swap that I figured would be easy, yeah right!

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_2622.jpg

On top of that, just when I thought everything was smooth sailing, Khoa, Nick and I came across this problem. The strut top nuts for the front coil overs were seized which resulted on the hack-saw, and angle grinder to come to town.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_2619.jpg

But hey, it’s all in now, the car drives and shit is all good. The R33 will be getting rego tomorrow, followed by making a quick stop at Dahtone Racing for some last minute preparation, for Driving Sports Twilight Drift this Saturday.

Here’s an aftermath picture of the fun and games last night. I somehow lost the middle section of my front bar, now it looks like I cut the bar to suit my hectic massive intercooler bro!

You know your having a good time, when shit is missing off your car at the end of a run.

In other news, the car performed really well last night, though a few worrying issues arose. The R33 was near overheating pretty much every run and the oil pressure was quite low too. So I need to sort out a bigger radiator and some thicker oil before Mad Monday!

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_2643.jpg

So after my high water temps on the skidpan last week, I figured I better get it under control ASAP! So I opted for the largest radiator I could find, purely because I no longer have a clutch fan and have the extra space.

After hunting around, I found a 52mm radiator on Ebay for a steal at $169 shipped! Believe it or not, all the Chinease radiators come out of the same factory, Cooling Pro, ASI, Saber you name it … it is all the same!

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_2654.jpg

Here’s a comparison photo of the OEM unit and the new radiator. It’s monstrous! It looks like the core is bigger then what was advertised as too, so I measured it up out of curiosity.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_2650.jpg

The core is infact 56MM! now let’s compare it to the OEM radiator..

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_2656.jpg

It’s over double the core thickness of the OEM unit, nice! I remember when I fitted a Cooling Pro radiator to my MX-5, the mounts needed slight modifications to get it all sitting nicely.
I’m happy to report I had to do absolutely nothing to this unit, it was a direct bolt in!

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_2647.jpg

While I was at it, I changed the lower radiator hose for a silicone unit. It matches the Billion upper radiator hose to a tee!

Here it is all fitted, this should help keep water temps down.

Not much left to do before Mad Monday, rad!

Last month, Benny and I placed an order with JDL tuning for an R33 roof spoiler. Last Friday it turned up and I didn’t hesitate to mock it up. As you can see it is much more aggressive than the Vanquish spoilers which is what I really like about it.

It’s the first cosmetic piece of many. One day, I’ll have the Skyline looking mighty boss. It’s just a matter of when.

Benny spotted a Stage21 cage listed on JDMST a couple of days ago. After a bit of stuffing around contacting the seller, I secured it.

It was only advertised as a half cage though. So when I saw that it was a full-cage it just made the bargain, even better. At least now I can have passengers when doing skids. Unsure when I’m going to fit it though, I’m still wondering whether I should strip the rear of the car out or not.
I’ve gotta make my mind up soon though, that’s for sure!

With Driving Sports – “Mad Monday” only a week away, I hauled ass in getting the R33 ready. This weekend consisted of fitting the Safety 21 rollcage, changing the gearbox oil, and engine oil. A few other things poped up along the way too.

Everything was pretty straight forward with no major issues. Nick and I took our time installing the rollcage as I was unsure whether to completely gut the rear interior or not.
For now we’ve left the interior trims in and taken the seats out. After matsuri I’ll look at removing the sound deadening and covering it all in some carpet.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_2678.jpg

I really like how the Stage 21 cage is designed, clearances are minimal and it doesn’t reduce head room which I was a little worried about. Because of the tight clearances, it did mean it was a pain to assemble in the car.

Moving on. We replaced the gearbox oil with some Redline lightweight shockproof stuff. As it would crunch when cold before hand. Hopefully the drive up to Wakefield will be enough for the “Smurf’s blood” to get into every nook and cranny of the box.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_2675.jpg

As for the engine oil, I ditched the Motul turbolight (10-40W) oil for some new Castrol Edge titanium (10-60W), in hope to boost oil pressure. Though after discussing the oil pressure problem with a few mates, I’m quite certain that the sender is in a low pressure area.

Another thing on the list to do is to put the aftermarket sender near the standard item.

Bring on Mad Monday!

Yep! Know about the history of this car at all Chris?!

As far as I can tell (by the papers given with purchase) and other things (broken glass etc) is that the car was hit in 07 then painted from burgandy to blue. I found a few photos of it in Autosalon too which was cool I guess.

Also found a little information on SAU that hinted the R33 was painted around 2007, cool!

Yeah I dunno. The interior is burgandy (wine red) and so are parts of the chassis. But I've got paperwork stating that it was/is black and the engine bay is black. Fuck knows.

Then I've got other paperwork stating the black car had a different VIN and was a sedan. Beats me, but it's interesting.

Went to Wakie today with Khoa (Bang A Dang) and Benny (Takz) along with Sammy (Whiteballz) and a few other bros.

Did one session and the car didn't have much oil pressure. Ok let it cool down and took it out an hour later. Had pressure for a few laps and noticed it starting to drop throughout the rev range and started to loose power. Pulled the pin and drove into the pits. Had lunch and shit, came back to the car and yeah ****'s fucked. minimal pressure on idle and getting a cool tapping sound. Kinda like sticky lifters (tappets) or something. Called a towie up and that is that.

So, plan is to source a oil pump this week, and do the old swaparoo over the weekend. Hope that solves problem and see if tapping sound goes away with more pressure, or gets worse. Here's hoping it goes away and I can get out to Matsuri!

Benny did good today, fucker didn't break anything though! brang all those spares for nothing haha.

The 14th of November was finally in town. Mad Monday was here! Ben, Khoa and I got up at 6am eager to head out to Wakefield. We waited for another mate (Anthony) to rock up before heading out. It was a long journey, probably the longest I’ve driven the Skyline in one trip, It wasn’t too bad of a drive either which is good.

Anyway, after stopping for fuel (for both the cars and us) we got to Wakie around 9am. We unpacked our shit, signed in and passed scrutineering rather quick. This was the moment we have waited for. Lining up in pit lane to take on Wakefield.

The first few laps I was getting a feel for the track, then let loose. I really like the back section up the hill (turns 3,4,5 and 6). After our first session I rolled into pit lane and the car shut off, “Uh-oh”.

My oil pressure problem was still lingering around, in fact it was getting worse. So I let the car cool down for an hour or so before heading out again.

I felt it was time to take the car out again and see how it goes. Anth kept telling me to watch the pressure ”If your loosing pressure when giving it, bring it back to the pits”.

Again, went around the track a few times and let loose, after turn 6 I started watching the oil pressure and it was fluctuating alot, dropping lower and lower. On went the hazards and I drove it into pitlane. Once again the car turned off so I left it there for 20 minutes or so.

We then grabbed a bite to eat at KFC, and I was stressing out (as you would). We then came back and cranked the car over to see what was going on.

Started perfect, but had sweet fuck all pressure (1-2psi), We then noticed a tapping sound. So we killed the engine and got it towed home.

In other news, Benny drove like a boss! getting better and better each session. His car didn’t miss a beat. Me jelly.

In the video above, it was the first start since Wakefield. As you can hear, the tapping noise goes away. My main theory to what it was, was the lifters not sufficiently lubricated from the low oil pressure. Thankfully it sounds like that’s all it is.

Which means my engine has a chance at being ok. For the curious, the oil pressure during that vid was 20PSI. Pretty damn low. So the plan of attack this weekend is to fit a new oil pump, to see if that cures the low oil pressure problem.

I’m really pushing hard to get to Matsuri, and the good ol’ RB is giving me hope.

My old soarer sounded similar to that when it smashed 2 big end bearings :(

Although the noise never went away...

Run-It-Hard
16-11-11, 11:28 PM
kinda, was coming from the head originally.

I've had a car where the bearings fucked out on me. Man that's a nasty sound. But yeah the real test will be when I drive it again and give it some stick, if the bearings are going to shit themselves it'll be then. Actually I lied. It would be soon, if not straight away. I'd be happy if the motor lasts Matsuri tbh. then park it for a few months and figure out what to do with it.

You still coming to Matsuri broseppi?

edit: started it again tonight. No return of the noise. Nothing out of the ordinary in terms of sounds/idle/response and pressure was at 30psi this time ... wierd. Will drop the oil tomorrow and see if anything interesting is in it.

The final piece of the puzzle arrived today, express posted from the ACT to my work. I got the front crank seal and gasket prior. Before the scheduled tear down on Saturday, I wanted to drain the oil to see if anything was in it.

Shortly after crawling under my R33, I had a look around the current oil pump installed on the RB25. Surprise surprise, there’s oil all over it, and managed to drip on part of the sump too.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_2701.jpg

Another thing I noticed was my power steering resivor. I guess I better get my power steering cooler in soon huh?

Oh right, the oil. I ran a magnet through it after draining, and it came up with no metal shards which is great! Here’s hoping the new pump sorts out the oil pressure issue.

Cheers bro, I can't take much credit for the car though as it's pretty much how I bought it (exterior wise anyway). I've been preaching for a while how awesome R33's are for the price you can get them for. I had a long long list of cars that I wanted to purchase, and after weighing up all the pros and cons, what I wanted to achieve with it and the cash it would cost me to do it. The R33 was the clear winner.

I think the R33 is the most hated model of the Skyline range. They have a more rounded/bulky look than the others but I love it.

But a cheap gauge will still give an ok reading.

Even if the reading is a little out, the scale it increases by should be very close. And the difference between low pressure and good pressure will be pretty obvious.

How long ago was this roughly? I remember looking through all the paper work that came with the car and I think in 08/09 the car was sold to another Steven, (Steven's friend, Steven). I'm guessing that's when it all went downhill in terms of looks. Not sure.

So, managed to get the head off tonight. Suspisions confirmed, headgasket is a goner. Interesting reason towards it though.

I don't know how, or why it would happen. But the head and block have been elongated in two parts (both on the passenger side). I'm guessing snapped head bolts or what not. So it makes me think why the head has been off in the first place. The piston tops look amazingly clean for a suspected 140k engine ... hmm.

Anyway, so the holes were elongated and a inner ring was placed in there to fill the new OD. But whoever has fitted this has also elongated the head gasket to suit. The photo below is probably where it failed, as it's right next to the water/oil jackets. So yeah as soon as we pulled the head gasket off and touched the enlongated part, the copper washer built into the gasket fell out.

http://i44.tinypic.com/28l83kw.jpg

So the plan of attack is to get another pair of inner rings in the same dimensions, cut two down to suit the block and leave the current two in the head. That way it'll still bolt together without needing to chop up the head gasket.

I need to get this car back together by tomorrow night if I have any chance of getting to Matsuri. So if your in the neighbour hood and wanna lend a hand it would be much appriciated!

List of things to do are:

Fit inner rings, headgasket etc.
Reassemble head
Install manifolds
correct timing
change fluids a few times to get all the shit out of the system
Skids

Wish me luck boes!

Haha cheers dude. Yeah now that they are getting cheap I won't be suprised to see them rise in popularity.

So, I've figured out what I'm going to do with this lovely skyline of mine and that is:

Get a new engine (got one lined up)
Do a few things to the bay while theres no engine
Put new engine in, run it in. get a new tune and skids.

Still deciding if I want gate or not, with the work being done to the bay we'll have to modify all the cooler pipes and jazz so I guess it wouldn't hurt to chuck a high mount + gate on for good measure. We'll see what happens.

Oh, also got some wheels on the way from Japan which will probably live on the Stagea until this has widebody rears.

Yeah it's still good. Only 2-3 years old and stuff all shaft play. I could sell it as a kit though (standard manifold with plate, lines, dump etc). probably be easier that way and go for a Garret GTX turbo or something. Decisions decisions haha.

The current turbo I have is a GT3071 (not a 76 like I thought). New one I'm looking at is a 3076 with .82 Vband rear housing.

Should have a similar feel to what the 71 had (with reduced cooler piping and new manifold) with more power potential.

Best of all, Vband will make the dump pipe easy to get on/off haha.

Going back a little here, just been hard pressed for time to update the blog.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/UPB33T.jpg

With Wakefield Matsuri two weeks away, we were in quite a rush to get the Skyline running properly. The plan of attack was to swap out the oil pump and hope that fixes the oil pressure problem.

With help from Anthony (who drives a sick 180SX) and John we managed to swap one out within a Saturday.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/removed-oil-pump.jpg

After bolting it back together, I flicked the key and the RB25 cranked to life. Unfortunately it was still running low oil pressure, so we were back at square one.

A few days later I went over the R33 again and noticed the oil was a milkshake colour. So this happened.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/head-off.jpg

Nick, Paulie and I managed to get the engine back together on Friday night, the night we planned to leave for Matsuri. Crank it over and there’s just too many issues worth fixing. It was late and I pulled the pin. We ended up getting to our hotel in Goulburn around 2am that night.

Anyway, after replacing the headgasket and oil pump it is still running low oil pressure. Next step would be the bearings but I’m over fault finding.

The plan of attack now is a new engine, more on that later.

Fault finding (http://run-it-hard.com/2011/12/fault-finding/#more-4184)

Every time I’m on the net, I’m always chatting to my man Benny. What Benny likes to do when he’s surfing the interwebs is look for wheels. He is probably the biggest wheel whore I know. I think he has like 3 sets and 4 pairs now or something.

Anyway, when we chat I always ask him to find me wheels for shits and giggles. He always manages to find dope wheels that tempt both of us to make the purchase. So last week we were doing our thing and he found a set of Super Star – Leon Hardiritt Waffe wheels on Yahoo, Ben sent me the link then saying “You’re going to hate me”.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/600x449-2011113000003.jpg

I open the link, see some dope Super Star wheels in offsets that’ll work on both the Stagea and Skyline (with widebody). As for the price, let’s just say landed, you’d be hard pressed to buy a set of Rotas. Probably something unheard of with Super Star wheels to go so cheap. In saying that, they do need a bit of cleaning up/have some gutter rash.

Actually I did see a set of Leon Hardiritt Ordens (The best wheels ever!) in S chassis offsets go for a little more then these did. Mind you they tempted me so so bad and I probably would of gone with them if I wasn’t to go widebody on the R33.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/532x600-2011113000004.jpg

The waffe wheels will probably be the Stagea’s new shoes for a while until I get my widebody rear guards on the R33. With that in mind, I went on a hunt for some coilovers. I then stumbled across these suckers.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/600x450-2011112600023.jpg

Here’s hoping they get the Stagea nice and low to the pavement with minimal fuss. Now the wait begins!

Now I’ve made the decision of starting fresh, I was stuck on whether to run the same turbo setup or not. I’ve never owned a car with gate, and as we all know, bitches love gate.

I advertised my current tubro on SAU at a price I’d be happy with and a deposit was put down the day after. Nice! looks like I’m changing setups after all.

The old setup was a Garret GT3071R, standard manifold, split dump pipe and a 4 inch intake.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/DSCN0141.jpg

The new setup is the following:

Garret GT3076R
.82 rear housing
Tial wastegate
V band dump pipe
High mount manifold

The manifold of choice is actually off Ebay, yeah we’ve all heard horror stories of cheap shit manifolds from EBay cracking, like Yuan’s manifold on his 180SX. But this doesn’t look like a bad bit of gear. Being mild steel I guess it’ll be easier to fix too.

The JPP R33 skyline has been running the same manifold for a couple of months now with no issues at all (pumping out over 450hp with it too).

Let's talk cosmetics

So I want a new kit. still trying to decide what to rock. I'm set on a Parts station duce kit but man it's so hard to come by (and exxy). I only really want the front bar and I'd be happy to run BN sides/rear with it.

so options are:

Final konexion

http://www.bwcustoms.com/wp-content/gallery/r33gtst/sky33.jpg

I actually really like that now I've found some in blue, with the S2 wang.

BN sports:

http://www.lightningmotorsport.co.nz/images/1214865044Bnrear.jpg

Love the rear and sides, just can't bring myself to like the front.

M sport:

http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/7595/dsc01959zo2.jpg

I like the front bar, sides and rear are a little plain.

Parts station duce (commonly called Vertex style, inspired etc):

http://ps-duce.com/image/r33-2dr-4_600x450.jpg

http://ps-duce.com/image/r33-2dr-6_600x450.jpg

This car is my inspiration! I love everything about it. In contact with a few suppliers atm so it could be a go-ahead.

Spoiler choices, tossing up between the S2 rear wing (3rd final konexion image) or the duck tail which everyone rocks these days.

I'm sick of running fibreglass front guards. So I'm hoping to source some 33 GTR guards. I'll need to get myself some sort of GTR bonnet too (probably something vented).

Gannador mirrors are a plan, as with eyelids (all my cars have them, that's just how I roll).

I'll place an order for some widebody rear guards soon. So I just need to decide on kit and rear spoiler.

With the engine setup out of the way. It was time to source a clutch that will handle the abuse Iíll undoubtedly give it for many years to come.

My first prefference was an ORC twin plate item. I had one of the Ogura clutches in the MX-5 and I loved it. I beated on it like no tomorrow and it never batted an eyelid (not that it has eyelids, but you know).

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Nismo-Tilton-twin-plate-2.jpg

Unfortunately I couldnít find any used ORC clutches anywhere, and I didnít really want to fork out $1500+ for one. So I kept looking for a suitable candidate. A little bit of searching on Yahoo found me this Nismo tilton twin plate which was used for a mere 5000km.

While I was at it, I also ordered a KTS clutch pivot ball to replace the standard item. Can never be too safe!

I received an SMS from Benny today about a wing that was on SAU. So I checked it out and after looking at the original photos I PM’d the seller.

A few hours later I was at his doorstep picking up this cool looking rear spoiler and a few other pieces (more on that later). I asked the original owner if he had any photos of it installed, but I had no luck. So I’ve got no idea what this wing is, or what it looked like on a car.

A did a quick mock-up on my 33 tonight and it looks pretty cool. If I get a chance this weekend I’ll bolt it onto the boot lid.

Best of all, I bought it for $30! Winging!

Shortly after picking the new unknown spoiler up. I got on the net and started hunting for what it may be. I finally came across a similar looking wing on a UK website. It was an old advertisement for the wing.

The add stated it was a Trust rear spoiler from their Gracer range, which was discontinued many years ago. Cool, so I went with that and googled “Trust rear spoilers R33″. I got a few matches confirming that I did score a Trust wing, nice!

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_2768.jpg

For those that are on my Face book may have seen some uploads of the wing earlier today. Well when I finished work I rushed inside and grabbed the JDL roof wing and slapped it on the car. I think they complement each other quite well and has swung me to rocking this big, bulky Trust wing.

Tomorrow I am picking up a new body kit for the car, I’ll get the rear bumper on over the weekend and hopefully that’ll make my decision set in stone.

I am feelin’ it at the moment.

There are so many body kit choices for the R33 skyline, it’s hard to pick just one to rock. During my searches I came across some URAS style kits advertised on EBay for only $500!

I’m sure we’ve all heard stories about cheap sketchy kits and how much of a prick they were to fit, because they didn’t actually “fit”. But these very photos you see are with this cheap knock off body kit has been literally slapped on the car. Paulie and I just picked up the bumpers and skirts, put them on, stood back and took photos.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/URAS-bodykit-dummy-fitted.jpg

Paulie and I were stunned how well everything fitted, more-so how easily everything went on. I’ll do some light trimming on the side skirts and I’d be happy to get it all painted up. The look is slowly starting to come along. I still need to order my rear guards and Gannador mirrors.

http://run-it-hard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/URAS-R33-rear.jpg

I’m glad I went with the URAS style body kit, it has really grown on me as of late.

We've run 38mm gates with 35r's upto 24psi with no boost control issues.
Why wouldn't it work properly? Since when is a 30/76 is big?

Wastegate size depends on target boost as well as turbo size.

The last piece of the turbo setup arrived late last week. Country of origin, New Zealand! There’s a mob over there knocking out some decent looking manifolds at very reasonable pricing.

I picked up thisHybrid performance mild steel manifold via EBay for $350 to my door. By the looks of things, the welds are decent, all the ports and collector are relatively clean. It’s well built and doesn’t foul with anything in the engine bay.

How long it lasts though, well we’ll just have to wait and see.
