Hey everyone..

I've been a member of this forum for a couple years now, but never posted much about my car. I post progress of it on other forums, so whats the point eh!
May aswell share now since i've got a bit of time at the moment. Not so much a build thread as it is its story...

I bought this car when i was 18, in early 2006.
Like me, the car was also 18years old; but was in very nice honest condition - original paint, engine, box, books/history etc, and 300,000km on the clock!
Surprisingly it was 'cheap' at the time for an AW11 (yet nicer), and from a dealer with roady and reg. It turns out I was actually very lucky there was even a good one for sale.. these things aren't common (were 4-5 for sale in the country at the time, and even now rarely more than 5 for sale at once!). It was just a bit of fun, and with 300,000k I completely expected the motor to die shortly after - at which point I'd just put in a 4agze. simple plan eh!
What I'd ended up with was a 1987 Aussie delivered car. Super Red 2 on black cloth. One of the first MR2's ever in the country (in the first batch), one of 140 registered in 1987 (~940 aus del in total), and 'fully optioned'. In reality this consists of pretty much only of sunroof, cruise, and aircon. There was no auto option here thankfully!
The car was delivered new in Sydney, coming down to Melbourne with the first owner shortly after. He traded it in in the early 90's. From there it had 2 (i think) other owners through the 90's and early 2000's, until 2006 when i picked it up. :)

Its funny, i just never expected to love it so much. I was originally in the market for an SW20 (dreamed of a 94+ Bathust - loved them growing up, but couldnt afford one in 2006!) but from the first time i drove the AW11, and from then on.. the obsession with it hasn't stopped!
I cant believe it... i just love driving these bloody cars. They're obviously not for everyone (old, slow, ugly), but the short wheelbase, manual steering, midship layout, and relentlessly thrash-able yet reliable 4AGE, just fkn DOES it for me!
Anyway, it turns out i was very very lucky with my purchase - I scooted about in the car for the next few years without a single problem. Driving to work, Tafe, and everywhere else! carrying ridiculous things in it because (for alot of the time) it was my only car. Day-after-day parked out the back of Coles (...where i worked for years) at 3am in the cold. Trying to snooze in it in the Tafe carpark in the mornings. But wherever i was, always looking forward to driving it home! I'd drive it all week to and from work/tafe, and then go straight back out to spending hours and hours driving aimlessly at night and on weekends! (still do!)
(Unfortunately) I got up to a fair bit of mischief at the same time, managing to lose my license a couple times. (hence the eternal P plates). forget power restrictions, you can still get into trouble with NA 1.6's, putting down a fire-breathing 88kw!

aaanyway, the pictures. pictures and text!
some early ones, from around 2006..

the car then had NA6 MX5 wheels, minus caps, which I sprayed with a sweet grey centre! hah

offcentre numberplate too, you know, to let air get to the intercooler <_< cmon i was 18...

followed by mismatched-for-the-sake-of-it wheels, update tail-lights, black Supercharger engine-lid, etc.
I then had some 14x6 Black-Racing knockoff Watanabe's, and some genuine watanabe's in the same size. here is a pic from probably 2007.

and some more..

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j273/RdSss/mm4.jpg

wanting to make it look a bit nicer, i took the junky bits back off again. not perfect, but neat enough. i think this may have been one of those periods soon before or after loosing my license. i actually didn't drive from the end of 2007 to june 2009. ew.
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j273/RdSss/IMG_6958.jpg
I kept it that whole time though. just pushed it into the back of the garage, and let it sit. this wasn't ideal for the car, as in this time the dash got its first crack, and the handbrake cables seized.. but amazingly that was it. i loved it too much to sell it.

In 2009 (at around 330,000km) I gave the car a solid tart-up to keep it looking respectable; consisting of fresh teardrops (stock wheels), new bumper, new lip, bit of paint to the aero, new seats, new screen, s/wheel, stock audio back in, etc.. all original. mechanically it was still the same, but just kept it trooping on looking nice. this was one of the best things i did to this car, as it gave it a chance to start again. It looked sharp.

those photos are actually taken not far out of Marysville, not long after the bushfires. Id say this is mid 2009 or so.
i was very happy with how the car looked.
then more Watanabe's again - i always liked AW11's on wats. These particular ones were 15x6.5 +30. i regret selling them.

Amazingly, the car managed to cruise through the years from 2006 without a single damn issue. NOTHING. same pads, same rotors, same clutch, same battery, bushes/joints etc. it had managed to hit 350,000km and barely cost me a dollar!
here is a bunch of photos taken in apr/may 2010, at 350,000km, when deciding what i was going to do with the car. pull it off the road and restore it, overhaul it mechanically, or just service and tart it up again..

But by now it was may 2010, and at 350,000km and over 22 years old.. it was in need of a bit of work. knowing that i never had or have any intention of selling this car, cost was really not too much of an issue. so i got to work getting everything re-done. originally it was just going to be mechanical overhaul on everything, but keeping stock; but then i steered towards OEM+, aand then just modding whatever. practically all the parts i bought from here on have been brand new - after years of fixing up worn parts, i'd realized it really is cheaper!

SO..
- Original bigport 4AGE rebuilt and balanced with smallport (higher-comp) pistons, head recoed, the massive cooling system refreshed with all new hoses..
- all bushes, F+R tie rod ends, F+R balljoints done.
- Then Coilovers, BC BR's - as there's not a whole lot of choice for the AW11. been very happy with these either way.
- vintage Recaro's - LX-c's. retrimmed with new genuine fabric and bolsters, but the centres (and doorcards) done in a tartan material. i still havent got sick of the pattern amazingly..!
- new Momo boss, quick release, lock... and 6 different Momo's over the next year. other wanky interior bits including a 300mm Razo mirror, and shiney black Razo ball knob..
- Raybrig clear lenses, and 8000k HID's..
- Greddy/Trust TR NA Extractors, custom centre section, highflow cat, and Fujitsubo Legalis-R Cat-back..
- 264deg, 8.1mm lift, IN/EX Tomei Poncams. Wrinkle red cam covers and open valley.
- Transaxle recoed, Quaife Helical LSD added, driveshafts, bearings etc redone..
- wheels. lots of wheels. Simmons V4 (love this on 80's cars) 15x7 +35, then SSR Type-C 15x6.5 +30, then Work Meister CR-01 15x7.5 +29 15x8.5 +29..

and the most recent, from a couple weeks back. Thats it really!
392,000km. 92,000km and 5 and a half years of lols..
from here its going to get a little more mechanical work (its playing funny buggers at the moment), and something to help it breathe. i DO have a stupid-rare original AW11 4AGE HKS Supercharger setup, and Intercooler at home.. but the kit needs restoring before installing. i like the reliability of the NA too.
other than that, I'll eventually go on one last Toyota parts-spree, and restore the bodywork to almost how it is now (just better). whats left of the original paint is really quite tired, no matter how it looks in the overly-flattering pictures. its all touch-ups and 24 year old paint..!

broke my foot the other week, so wont be driving for a couple months. hence why I've spent my day typing this up.
either way, hopefully others have enjoyed it. Dont sell through cars - get one and just enjoy it. i love how much i've done in this car, and how much it means to me.
its been a pleasure. :)

still surprised i like the tartan so much. its been a year now, and its always fun. bit of a laugh for my drive to work.. :P
the tartain/plaid inserts, and the hanging fogs, are heavily inspired my the 70's and 80's 911/930's (that i want so goddamn much!) with the tartan inserts... :P

interesting to point out that over time the pictures are gradually getting better. :) the first ones are fkn terrible..! :P

all very kind. :)

like i said in the first post - the pictures are very flattering. she's a little rough round the edges nowadays, but I always keep it clean. i found years ago that no matter what dints/marks a car has, if its shiney no-one will notice... :)

where'd you get the seats done! ??
Recaro fabric and parts came from capitalseating in the UK, the tartan/plaid fabric (which i bought a ridiculous amount of) came from a random shop on ebay USA. took it all to a trimmer here on Oban rd in Ringwood who put it all together. he'd done trim work on my GTS in the past, and again i was very happy with his work. after a year its starting to bunch up in a few places, nothing bad, but to be expected from the fabric. i'll get some bits re-done eventually, though no rush since it's pretty much unnoticeable. the fabric itself has held up extremly well.. its some sort of non-fading outdoor acrylic!

another random picture, since we're on a new page... :)

Great story and pics.

The recaros looked pretty minty before the retrim, matched the interior perfectly!

coincidentally, those seats really should have matched the interior, as they were used in the 1989 'Super Edition' AW11. Recaro LX-C's with that centre fabric - identical. interestingly, Toyota also used the same seat in the SSR-G Surf, with a different headrest in the JZA70, and later with a different pattern in the early SW20's. the LX-C was the Toyota Recaro before the SR-D/3 :)
the inserts were in a solid 8/10 condition too, so although i removed them, i kept them. i dont regret going to the tartan though.. it just personalizes the interior a bit more... :)

That's sex. I was tossing up between a AW11 and NA6 before I got mine. I don't regret the decision, but having borrowed a mate's red AW on multiple occasions, I'm sure I would have have been just as happy.

Very keen to read more.

That's sex. I was tossing up between a AW11 and NA6 before I got mine. I don't regret the decision, but having borrowed a mate's red AW on multiple occasions, I'm sure I would have have been just as happy.

Very keen to read more.

i totally understand what you mean - i know i would've been more than happy in an NA6. I've spent alot of seat time in MX5's, and they're always fun.

Awesome car, so clean! I wish I had doen something similar with my first car - it wasn't an mr2 unfortunately but the story of your journey with your car has me all nostalgic...

Nice one!

aww.. thanks. :P
it honestly (unfortunately) wasn't my first car, as i got it 3months into my license. but I'm glad i got into it as soon as i did. :P
Often in my mind i treat it as my first car. I've just had it so damn long...!
As i mentioned in my first post, too many kids buy and sell cars without ever really understanding a single one. they miss out on ever really truly becoming comfortable in one car/chassis. I just love the things I've done (and places I've been) with this one car! :)
it really doesn't even matter what kind of car it is..!

Finally a build thread! Managed to see this in the flesh at an EOMM earlier this year when I was down in Melbourne. Love it! The new wheels too!

thanks..!
I've taken it to a fair few EOMM's, but missed all the ones in recent months. :(
glad the wheels get a good reception, they took a little while to grow on me. I miss the colour of the gold wheels a bit.. just a little extra colour helps.

not so much a build thread either - but i'll regularly dump updated pics here, thats for sure! :) ...i take.. alot.. of pictures.. :P

Very nice, i likey :).

thanks. :)

Haha, it isn't his first car.. nor his last D:

blargh.. practically first!
but yep, always been other cars aswell. i just like this one though.. its a regular.. :P
Little Red is the base of my automotive food-pyramid diet... :P

This has got to be one of my favourite AW11's and better condition than one that I photographed a few years back with one absolutely anal owner, who put less than 100k kms on it!! Also, I really dig the work wheels!!

got pics of the one you photographed? i cant think of the car you would've taken pictures of..
small side effect of owning one reasonably rare car for a fair few years; i remember pretty much every car that's popped up on carsales/ebay/forums since 06!

like i said though, the photos are always flattering. its really not as nice as it looks- its just too old, and done too many km. so its just an immaculate 6footer car! :P
bit of wear-and-tear ('character') doesnt stop me from keeping it spotless though!

thats it for now..
but random side-shot:

What are the wheel specs? If you get bored of them shoot them my way.

after a bit of careful measuring, and a little chat to someone at work USA, i went with:
15x7.5, +29, A-disk. 195/50 R15
15x8.5, +29, A-disk. 205/50 R15
the wheels were only new on the market at the time i ordered, so i had no previous examples to work off (or even pictures of the back of the wheel to see caliper clearance!). but went well in the end. possibly slightly too aggressive on the rear, maybe not enough on the front. with the cheeky 205 on the back i may aswell have sneaked a 9" onto the rear..
n noooo.. even when i do eventually get sick of them, ill just stack em in the corner! sorry..! :P

got 400,000km in the bag. would have had it by christmas other than my busted foot <_< boo...
but want 500,000km out of it for giggles. i'll probably be dead my 1million! :P

shush you.

aargh.. dont like the racks? I actually have two sets - the ski racks, and the surfboard racks. both stupidly rare.. probably for obvious reasons!
i don't run them often anyway - cant remove the sunroof when i do. :P

Wow, I love so much about this, and recognize a lot of the photo spots. Even though you mention the odd dents and wear/tear, this is still a car that fully deserves to be called 'clean' (unfortunately a term that gets thrown around too much on the internet and has almost lost its meaning). I developed a soft-spot for these little cars only after seeing some modded examples online, now I think they're one of the best boxy 80s cars out there. Kudo's for putting in the effort to secure those rare OEM options, real dedication there. The seats are awesome too, very stylish! The wheels, gearknob, momo steerer, it all just screams good taste. Keep it up mate, hope I can see this in the metal at a meet one day.

Can tell from the way you write about this car that you love it to bits. I have to agree with you about moving on from car-to-car too quickly. I've been driving for 6 years or so now and I am onto my second car (the supra) and I don't think that I will ever sell it.

Also I remember going for a drive in one of these (sc one) about 12 months back and loved it to bits, seat belts didn't work and all four tyres were bald but it was a bucket of fun and I still want one as a daily...actually I am on carsales.com right now...damn you! :P

It's quite refreshing to see someone keep a car so long. I love the way you have spent the time hunting down rare OEM parts, modifying tastefully whilst lovingly maintaining it. People these days just don't seem to stay in the one car for very long; they pick up a car, modify the car in one or two big installments, then sell up shortly thereafter.

Well done. Type C's and the CR's look awesome, and I am loving the Recaro's and the unique trim! :D
Have always had a little thing for AW11's. (Hard decision between the AW11 and AE86 for me).

Will be following this thread and look forward to updates.

i know what you mean about 'clean'. just have a look at some carsales ads - its enough to make your head hurt. 'immaculate', 'mint' and even 'original' all have to be taken with a serious 1kg of salt...
but this car is honestly just wearing out. like i said on the previous page, in the future it will get a whole repaint on the outside, with new pinstripes n whatnot. whats left is just so worn thin.. so chipped, marked, scratched, etc. in the meantime, i actually love how it represents the KM it has done..
You might have seen this car already too, as i remember chatting to you at a meet in the past. i was loving your 510 at the time.. :)

Yep; it may not even be a good thing really to be strapped with 1 car for so long.. but i find you never appreciate a single chassis until you do. so many kids miss out on this.
i have had other cars that have come and go (and im very lucky to be able to have more than one at once!) but its just nice to have 1 to always go back to.. :)
you're lucky that you've got such a good chassis (jza80) to stick with. so much potential.. and a definite keeper.. :)
good luck if you're seriously hunting an AW though..! its unfortunate, but rarely do genuinely nice ones get onto the market...

funnily enough, that Toyota window lettering is actually on the sun-visor. an awesome 80's Toyota design detail, that shadows down onto the rear screen when the sun hits the clear visor. always thought it was somewhat clever.. :P

What a great story!
Your story typifies the bond that can exist between a great car and it's owner/driver.
Something that Toyota have been wanting to rekindle in recent years.

I love the wheel choices... can't really choose a favourite between the SSR's and the Works, either. Both are good in their own way.
Although, the SSR's make the car look more appealing from a driving perspective.

Chalk me up as another fan of the tartan - a simple 'bespoke' style touch which really helps to stamp the car as your own, while still providing a nod to the period.

Thanks for sharing the story, long may it continue!

good pics can definitely make anything look good! Help's that little red is such a pretty '6-footer'. Up close its rough, but its hard to notice when you just generally look at the car as a whole. makes a great photography subject anyway, and it helps me learn.

starts to look a bit crustier in larger format, but heres that picture in 1680!

I think Toyota is trying to get back into that sort of thing with the GT 86. hopefully it is indeed a really good car you can get attached to.
I find i get attached to almost any car i own anyway. I personify cars waay too much. I think I can almost point the blame at 'Suzie the little blue coupe' - a 1950's Disney cartoon on got on a VHS when i was very young!
As for the wheels, I still like the SSR's too much to sell them. definitely more usable as a driving wheel.

Another selection of pictures from the last 12 months. I take a LOT of pics, and can only hope they're getting better..!

I've still got a perfect set. havent run them since late 2007! haha
it barely even matters since the rest of the car isnt stock, but it kills me seeing the SC tails with the sunroof! even worse with the black mirrors and handles! that combo on a Mk1B never really existed (maaaaaybe on some US-market NA's..).. it makes my head hurt!
the tails I'm running are also a little nod to its Aussie-ness.. that its not an import. :)

in saying that, the MK1B tails are no doubt much much much better looking, and properly 'correct' for the MK1b shape really..

Your car makes me wish i got an adub... actually it makes me wish i could fit in one lol

cmon, whats the reason for not fitting eh! the adub actually has a suprisingly roomy interior; thanks to the high roof, somewhat upright windows, and mid engine layout. gives it decent headroom and laaarge footwells.
im 190cm and this is a sunroof car with 2cm or so less headroom!

I am just about 2m tall and when i sat in one my head was touching the roof but to be fair i didnt have much of a chance to change the seating position properly...

Financial reasons and not being able to find an adub at the time made me go for the 82, oh and having a bit more room inside played a part too... yeah they're defs a fun little car and really hold their own out on the track, but they just arent quite as awesome as an Adub or 86...

^ Evo just needs a proper polish; but (other than that) will probably.. hopefully.. not changing much at all! will rego it when i can walk again.. :)
graaaadually been learning with the camera over the last year or two. its a 1000D, but use a 35mm f2.8 and a 50mm f1.8 for almost all the pics. just the other week i got a 20mm f1.8 though, so will bring a bit more variety of angles to my photos soon! (occasionally use my 17-35mm zoom in the past anyway, but just love the simplicity of non-zoom lenses. 'primes'.)
i just keep practicing. :)

i realli like your lil RED.
it appeals in so many ways
its age
the look of it.
And how you presented in a non honda ricey way.
thats wat i/we do even on P plates.

The quirky blue tartan interior suits it hard. And i like stuff that is unique and different.
I see that your on your P's but please please never give up on this when you get your fulls.
Stuff like this is not only rare it has a good street presence when u see 1 roll on by.

Few Q's about the seats / door cards:

- Did you DIY or get a shop to do it, if so how much did it set you back? (if you don't mind me asking) feel free to PM.

- Did you source the fabric yourself?

RdS
20-05-12, 11:29 PM
hi,
definitely not DIY - I'd be there forever trying to get something even remotely decent!
cost was a couple hundred. defintely less than 500 (all labour), for the doorcards and seats.
i supplied all the fabric. the tartan came from somewhere on ebay USA. bought it online as i simply couldn't be fucked going down to the shops. wasnt looking for a specific tartan, just any one that i fancied. The black Recaro fabric came from the UK, and is around $100/M; but in hindsight could have just pinched the fabric off the back of the seats.

RdS
16-07-12, 07:35 PM
^^ this is the most recent pic of the engine bay, from octoberish last year:
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j273/RdSss/20111008/20111008O.jpg

dont take many pics of it, as its usually filthy in there.
its an unfortunate design trait with the AW11 and many midengine cars. It scoops cool air for the engine-bay from the ground under the car, getting pulled out the vents on the engine-cover (not the other way round!); so all the dust on the road that the front wheels through up, all ends up in the engine bay.
i clean it thorougly every few months to keep it from becoming permanent grime.

the car is going ITB's in a few weeks, so will look alot neater in there too very soon!

Wow! That's a great achievement! Still original engine?
It is actually the original engine; but had it rebuilt at 350,000km, then again at 390,000km because it shagged two pistons.
I'm a sucker for originality, and wanted to keep the same engine and gearbox etc with the car. was an expensive way to do things, but ehhh.. :)

I hate this car and how fucking clean it is ! Luvin it !
cmon, it was fkn filthy in the last pics. haha

^ definitely much longer, but i like it. I installed it with a short shifter, so its not as bad as it could be.
I just love the look of it. keeps your hands on the wheel, as its too high to rest your arm on the console. :)

Elitee, cheers for the pics, i appreciate it. :)

Now running a Haltech Sprint 500, AE101 ITB's, T3 Manifold, T3 Trumpets and Uni Filters, GoldenEagle vacuum block, Smallport dizzy, Walbro pump, 3SGE injectors, and an AE101 (aussie nugget version) coolant resevoir. Little HKS oil and radiator caps too, in an effort to spruce things up.
Also added slotted rotors, Pmu pads, and goodridge braided lines; plus a Quaife quick-rack, poly rack bushes, and new rack ends.
Will be getting new clutch master and slave cylinders on Tuesday.
Will add a catch can i have to the rear firewall area, and will probably get a new battery and tidy up the tray area. That side of the engine bay is damn empty..

why? alot of things needed to be done anyway (was time for a new fuel pump, rack needed rebuilding, etc), but its also Lil Reh's 25th birthday!
Goddamn, Its a classic car now. I bought it when it was 18!

Excuse my complete ignorance (and unwillingness to read back through the pages) but these come with a varying length intake thing with a single TB standard don't they?

Its not as neat as it looks. low lighting is flattering...!
Definitely very responsive, but would be better if the throttle was lighter. Its a difficult design being midengine... :(

stock was TVIS, single throttle body, and an AFM.
the TVIS is pretty much what you said - a variable intake. This particular setup just has 8 ports, with 4 blocked off during low revs.
The TVIS was dropped on the 4age's early on, and is gone on mine now.

So awesome. I can't imagine how good they'd sound, right behind your head on WOT.
Loud, and urgent.
..its perfect. :)
Interesting how little noise they make at light throttle, or at idle. Completely relatvie to how much the throttle is open.
On a freeway its near stock, yet they absolutely scream at WOT..

I actually bought them as they are off Yahoo Japan. Was very lucky, as whoever did it had done a brilliant job. perfectly clean, great paintwork, and even came with the new seals!

Elaborate? Do you mean there's a lot of mechanical resistance in the system? Or it's difficult to moderate etc? Sounds like something that could be easily overcome!

RdS

It just has to travel a long way, and i guess the overall friction must add up..
it goes through the firewall in front of the footwell, under the car through the centre tunnel, enters the engine bay on the left side, heads over to the left driveshaft, before doing a large 180 to head across to the underside of the throttle bodies.
The cable is new.
I'll have to try other AW11 thottle's to see if something is wrong.. but i never remember it being particularly light in the years I've owned it.

I pushed the throttle in an ITB'd NA6 MX5 the other day with my hand... holy shyte its liiight. Like my evo, so light the car almost lurches on bumpy roads!

Hezath
18-09-12, 05:27 PM
I wouldn't really buy that... It may be worth removing the cable and squirting silicone spray down one end and moving the inner back and forth etc for ages until the silicone lube actually starts coming out the other end. Takes ages but makes an amazing difference on clutch cables (brand new ones!). Accellerator pedals generally have springs that hold them 'off' to keep tension on the cable, maybe you have one that is a bit excessively tight? Remove the cable from the pedal end and have a feel, and then do the same at the throttlebody end and have a feel. The throttle return spring at the TBs might be excessively tight? But more importantly, make sure that there are no tight radius' in the path of the cable. Find the smallest radius and see what you can do to make it bigger, and see what effect that has. Make sure all the grommets etc are in place, that it isn't bending hard around the edge of some sheetmetal accidentally :P

BTW is your HJ GTS the yellow one that was at the Eddington Sprints earlier this year?

It was for too low, wheels too wide, no hornpad - and the 2800k headlights I was running at the time - undboubtedly and stupidly the thing that brought attention to it in the first place.
I quickly changed these things, but predictably failed a RWC due to ITB's - the complete lack of EGR, noise etc. It was just too risky for them to pass, which I totally understand.

I was losing my license soon at the time anyway, and was having a great time driving the Evo; so gave up after that little effort. Rego was suspended, which i then cancelled and plates put on retention. And now here it is.

I dont mind at all really; and it gives me more reason to get it nice again. Its all good fun.

Sorry, I'd missed you'd asked above too.
I'm sure I've written it a couple times allready, but:
15 x 7.5 +29 195/50
15 x 8.5 +29 205/50
you're not technically allowed that sort of track increase anyway, but it would have just been the rears that were obvious. the outer lip sat a couple mm outside the guard edge.

Gave it a thorough tidy-up last year; including tons of new clips/bolts/plastics from Toyota, unrolled the guards, and a single-stage acrylic repaint (as original) down the right side of the car. Its all back together now, but still sitting, unregistered.
I WILL get around to getting it re-registered eventually (been busy / preoccupied..), although for now, well... its just nice to look at.. :)

Couple biffs and scrapes here and there (I still drive this thing fairly hard..!), but nothing major. January through to now; from making the airbox to get through rego, to the hilariously naff Japanese style plates.

A couple of the 4Runner, from late last year..

Awesome. I wasn't sure if that 4Runner was yours but I think someone had suggested it was.

Cars looks great, still miss the fat wheels but those plates work very well on it. Rated

What this guy said. Plenty of cars on here make you wonder "I wonder what happened with that?"

Always nice to see a car like this is still in good hands.

Thats it eh! I'd actually thought I'd left this with the car still in pieces, so had it on my mind to update this for a while.

I did love it lower with the wider wheels, but I'm not rolling those damn guards again! ha. Stock is always nice anyway, and its also not-surprisingly comfortable as all hell at this height..!

Got a question for ya RdS regarding those recaros you have in there. How comfortable are they (longest drive you've had in them)? Did the brackets you get with them bolt straight into the aw11?

I really like the look of yours and I'm wondering what price I should be expecting for a set, whether or not I'll need custom or recaro rails with them, and how much better than the stock seats they are.

Missed this, so sorry for the delayed reply..!
The seats; I find them very comfortable. They're firm, which I like. They're too wide for me on my sides, so I end up sitting on a bit of an anlge after a while; but having them upright with my shoulderblades in the backrest corners helps a LOT. I've had later Recaro's which are honestly much better as a performance seat, but these are super stylish.. have great build, and don't give backaches. The fact they're made by a company that just makes seats says a lot.. as does the production run of the LX!
The rails were made by some company in Japan, and one of many who just build-to-order list on Yahoo. No issue. I've heard Bride AW11 rails work too though?

...
So.
Update.
Full circle on Lil' Red here!
Coilovers back in, and a set of 1984 Rays SuperVolks. Period, directional, cast-hollow, and valve behind the centrecap. Totally awesome. Dragged these out of Japan and gave them a new lease on life - absolutely love em.
