My step brother had a set of those wheels in 20s on his maroon VL. That was back when dinner plates were in and everyone wanted 20inch rims.

Don't see many of those cars rolling around anymore.

Thank fuck.

I won't hold a difference in taste against somebody, but I will bag the shit out of poorly done cars with woeful workmanship. That said, some of that style of car had some top notch workmanship go into the build. Quality work is something that should be admired, whatever the result. Too bad there wasn't much of it floating around in tacho-less, chromed up Lancers.

Those wheels that green lancer has = Enkei's worst wheels ever???? (I know, probably fakes on that car, but still the original design were Enkei G-Zero's - yuck!)

Hahaha! VN + VT.. Just proves 2 wrongs don't make a right.

you guys need to understand, that was the "thing" back in the day, it was the most baller shit to have a CRX with a white tiger airbrushed onto it, it was the in thing to have 4 x 15 inch subs in the back and a mexican walking fish in a tank in the boot (srs)

Just like JDM is the in thing these days, it was a style at the time. Cars like ICEBOY, DVIOUS and GGHOST were fucking rad back in the day, now you would say "burn it with fire" but trends change, tastes and style mature and now it's fashion to have rims sitting 2 inches outside the guard and cover every available space in stickers with ridiculous sayings like "Ninjas killed my family." In 10 years time the youth of the day are probably gonna facepalm hard at the current trends, the cycle will continue.

Things like Fast and the furious and the all time classic NFS underground series made this trend what it is. When i was 14 or there abouts i used to think it was cool.

I played NFSU 2 for a laugh the other day, it is impossible to make a jdm car.

Lets just hope your JDMST isnt a fad....

Otherwise your $3,500 worth of "genuine JDM rims" wont seem like a great investment.

That being said....... you have to do what makes you happy now.... and live with the consequences later :)

Brasher knows the score

I was involved with a few guys that built AutoSalon style cars back in the day - 2NSANE and GSR2NV being the 2 most famous (both hot4s feature cars, with 2NSANE on the cover of issue 97). This sort of thing was THE BUSINESS - biggest wheels possible, lots of air brushing and leather. Although I look back and cringe it was a pretty wild time to be part of the car culture. You would go to Auto Salon and see guys like the Osmans and Queen St Smash buildign crazier and crazier stuff trying to outdo each other. Some of it was beautifully engineered and detailed, other times it was slapped together, bog filled garbage.

I think that whoel scene was a victim of its own enthusiasm, people pushing so hard to outdo each other that eventually a few people stood back and asked "why?" and started building cars that were more functional. As the JDM automotive culture, with its emphasis on time attack and drifting, started to filter through tastes begain to change.

Things that I remember from that era:

Altezza tail lights
Vautl Crystals, Enkei G Zeros and various other dinner plate style wheels
Crazy boot installs (fish tanks man, Brasher wasn't kidding about that!)
Crazy airbrushed cars - say what you like about it, but the guys that did this work were real artists, and it takes big nuts to have someone airbrush a white tiger, or a 8 foot long shark on your car

Totally agree with Brasher.

I must admit I was a ricer and still a ricer deep down haha.. I had a gti swift with a full vertexy looking kit, side skirts moulded into the body, bogged up key holes so only keyless entry and if my battey died im fcked, white with a blue pearl, one wiper, 16 inch speedy hyper fangs (cause 17s were too heavy lol), king springs, sparco bucket, momo race wheel and I thought I was the shit in 2001. Then fast and furious came out but I had mixed emotions on jdm and candy paint so I sprayed my mr2 to Lamborghini green, boosted to 20 psi, full border kit, but ran advan wheels lol. Both cars Did turn loads of heads back in it's day. Trends change and now I drive cars with jdm shit.

You can see those 2 cars in my avatar lol

agree x 1000

'collapsed-suspension' camber, dildo knobs, cable-tying every corner of bodykits, overly stickerbombed panels, rust quarter panels/bonnets... are all current fads that make me go 'wtf eww' now, let alone in 10 yrs.

clean, subtle & simple will always be a winner. Looking neat is timeless.

That CRX Del sol back in the day with the fish tank that had the Axelottle (how ever its spelt) was still awesome to look at.
Does anyone remember that Blue lancer with the massive shark on it (was in Newcastle for a long time)?

Tasteful modification will never be just a trend, and will never get old.

Not sure how old some of you guys are, but i'm 24 now and when I was going through high school there were still examples of really nicely modified cars which weren't ricey at all, and these were the cars I liked and still like.

Most of the cars being mentioned in this thread are just trashy (too harsh?), and the same can probably be said for alot of the hellaflush stuff coming out now. So yea doesn't really matter if it was in back then, or is in now, if it's shit, it's shit!

i dont really think hanging shit on old sex spec cars is fair to be honest. Its like baggin out a photo of someone in 1999 wearing a smp shirt or someshit. it was a massive trend in the earl 00's and now only a few hang around to modifiy to that extreme. All "Sexspec" is today is a car thats low and have either stockies with white wallas or 20 inch wheels. Its a phase that deffinatly dieing out. I was a massive fan of sexspec, it gave your car attention, people would second look at it, it was awesome.

the biggest thing to take away from the past is to ultimately build a car your happy with and don't follow trends because if you build a car your happy with you will always be happy with it.
If you build a car to make others happy and to score five minutes of web fame you will be laughed at for years to come.

My point exactly. If you read earlier in the thread I said the samething, JDM isn't about function... Some other dude said it was.

Some of the cars mentioned aren't rice, just different scene / taste and everything not JDMstickerbombedomghellastance seems to be sex spec or ricer these days... :P

Oh there's plenty of ricers out in West Syd for those interested in reminiscing the 90's :D lol

I find that so stupid and just looks ugly! And yeh hate all sticker bombing etc etc, also what shits me is people saying like whats the point of that mod etc but then again whats the point of having a rusted out bonnet, have your fender covered in stickers? then again each to their own! I loved those days of 4RBABY 4U2NV cars like that were so cool! even nowadays I still love sex spec, cause end of the day a car like REXC will turn more heads than a civic with a rusted out bonnet sitting on CCW's if I had the money id def build a sex spec car for a nice cruiser!

As everyone else has been saying, especially those of us who are old enough to have seen trends come and go, things change and much of what is "in" now will soon be looked upon with disdain by the modified car scene but it sure is had not be sucked in even a little bit by trends, now back to auctions.yahoo.co.jp because I really need some 17x10s with a baller offest :)

you guys need to understand, that was the "thing" back in the day, it was the most baller shit to have a CRX with a white tiger airbrushed onto it, it was the in thing to have 4 x 15 inch subs in the back and a mexican walking fish in a tank in the boot (srs)

This. I still love the cyber prelude... That thing was the bomb. Even some of the ozmans cars...

You know, massive camber, stretched tyres, mill or 2 gap between guard and tyre, cracking your sump on a cat eye etc, all functional right?

There was a definite transition period - it seemed to go Auto Salon spec, then to the functional, JDM racer style, with lightweight rims and carbon body panels (mainly on Hondas) and "drift spec" rwd Nissans. As with any of these trends they got taken and pushed to their boundaries by various people.

Maybe it's because of the crowd I hang aroudn with these days but the hella flush/stanceworks/whatever style doesn't seem to be as big a part of the automotive landscape as "sex spec" or whatever you want to call it was back then. And there have always been slammed cars, and there always will be

I played GT in 1998. Saw JGTC cars in the game, and thought "yeah this is the shit I like" ... haven't changed my tastes at all.
All through 2000s I was reading HPI rather than Hot4s and was watching Best Motoring rather than Autosalon DVDs.

Personally ... I was a massive fan of these cars. I remember buying my first Hot4's magazine, it had the two MR CRX cars ... nothing else looked awesome, except maybe the Cyber CRX. Also, I remember I admired the Mazda Cosmo 3ROTOR ... so clean, tasteful mods and the dude had an RX7 as well. I think the site is still up (www.3rotor.com) ... that'll give you an insight to cars of the day.

I look back at some of the cars and think "what was I thinking", but I remember all the good times I had as well.

What about the mid 2000 classics?
HVNSNT pink pulsar with 300fwkw - girl owner, plates now on a subaru hatchback (same girl)
HVDFLU wrx - suicide doors, insane trim, airbags, 500kW scooby engine, eat that
LUSHES FD RX-7 by the brothers who built SUBLIME
4GIVME another RX-7 with awesome aqua green paint
U DROOL wide body magenta FD
2GUUP - Anthony Datone's off tap R32
MR SIK - fucking insane gemini
3KUOUT - Another mad S14 (nothing on GGHOST though)
RYTONQ - Subaru Liberty with LCDs in engine bay and wheels

These cars just took impossible to another level

That's starting to talk a little more recently now, sex spec era if you will.. 2007 was only 4 years ago :p

Exept for LUSHES pretty sure that shit was OG

Give me some 2000 flava

There's been a thread on sexspecmotorsport.com for years tracking the whereabouts of these old classics... you'd be surprised at how cheap some of them have sold for. :(

Now to side track the thread:

the kinda sad thing is looking at all of these - well i guess what would be considered "retro" by today's standards - cars makes me appreciate, get nostalgic, and fall in love with them all over again...

even tho JDM is the in thing - if u go to Japan they have no concept for what JDM, USDM, AUDM or any of that is... they consider euro's to be imports and treat euro's the same way we treat their cars - something unique.... I haven't jumped on the hellaflush, slam, poke, etc band wagon - clean does it for me

GGHOST was a classic, had balls too 10.4 second.

A guy used to own it on my street, saw it driven for about 30mins 2 times in about 2 years. Long gone now though.

There were some awesome ones up here in QLD too... I don't remember plates but one that springs to mind was an AE92 Corolla that had been converted to AWD and had a 4A-GZE running an SC12 super charger and E54 6 speed manual box... the guy did it as a WRX killer... white with green trims, big blinged up chrome wheels and a gremlin airbrushed on the rear doors both sides looking like it was tearing out of the inside of the car. Not something I'd be seen in as it takes a set of balls to try something so garish and get away with it (even today) however much kudos and love for that car...

Thought about this the other day... I remember someone on here mentioned that the reason you'd see the majority of cars being done up in the late 90's/early 00's were shitboxes because 1.They were cheap and easy to find, but also 2.Imports were harder to bring in and just weren't on the market?

If this is right, then when were the floodgates opened to bring all the Jap/Import cars in? Of course the prices back then were much higher for new models, so I can understand that, but even new WRX's had money poured into them so was it just a year when more cars came in all of a sudden? Eng-Jap brokers became available? Guidelines/Laws were relaxed?

They were the days!!!! Life was so simple and nothing really got us into much shit with anyone.

Sunday nights ruled, and if you guys think the EOMM's attract some cars you needed to see Bondi Beach!!!! So many cars, and so many tough cars!!!! Big blocks and slicks ruled the streets lol Kenny and Tarek doing helis everywhere in their RX3's was always a site to be seen :)

I think I am a little younger than you. I was 16/17 when all that was happening.
When I got my P's I used to head out in my RX2, ex IRPA car, 13bpp, cage, semis... At one point even a side pipe.... Nothing ever happened.
I remember some of those nights down at Bondi..... That menatally disabled guy who used to take pics. Loved his rotarys. Would go nuts over them.

3am skids in the airport tunnel....

Then some of the late night "meet ups" around Minto and occasionally Hill Rd (side note... my dad used to drag race on Hill Rd back in the 60's and 70's).

Popping the bonnet on TOY12A and using the turbo to keep our hands warm when we were out watching the mischief late one winters night.

Cops would turn up and just tell people to move on.

So many memories.

Wow, some major blasts from the past in this thread.

I remember back in the day going to Auburn McDonalds, the servo on the M4 at Eastern Creek, Bondi Beach, the BP on Horsley Drive then Davis Rd in Wetherill Park for runs, etc.
I remember some crew (was it Cabin?) starting out in Hondas and the odd Toyota or Nissan, then moving on to Mercs, BMWs and an Audi.
I remember helping my cousin build a purple Datsun 1600 with an FJ20ET with black TRX mags, then black MoMo/Compomotive-style 5-spoke wheels with dodgy "Nismo" and "Godzilla Motorsports" stickers, probably way before the Qld workshop of the same name even existed (I'm talking early '90s here).
I remember a light purple or pink RX3 coupe that used to pull MASSIVE helis at Davis Rd, seeing the exhaust glowing the whole length of the car, then stop and rev the engine, and pop 3ft long flames as it backfired on each rev.
I remember another cousin (the toolbag that he was and still probably is) owning the "MRMOMO" Swift, with everything in the car coming from Roman Autotech - MoMo steering wheel, big stereo, 16" MoMo Ferrari Engineering wheels (apparently the first set in Australia) and tuning by Action Suzuki in Parramatta.
LOL, I even remember when the "United Colors de Benetton" craze was in...

It all started at Auburn Maccas lol Then the Mobil by Parra Speedway. Then the M4 Maccas, wonderland, Davies Road, Marigold Street, hell we even closed down the M5 to race lol

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the Mobil on Parra Road. There was also some spot on the Hume Highway in Milperra/Bankstown (roughly near where JDM Yard is situated, IIRC), and also somewhere near the old Shell refinery.

Yeah, I think I do remember the VL. I also remember a black and green VP Commodore with DGHOST plates turning up to the M4 carpark, it had a seriously loud and lumpy idle (and sidepipes, IIRC) and you could feel it in your chest as it drove past, just like a full drag car.

That RX3, I don't recall ever meeting (or seeing) Tarek, so I always assumed it was Frank Canistra, 'cos we used to refer to the driver as "Mr Heli." Not sure if I remember the TransAm, but I'd probably remember it if I saw it in the metal... I'm guessing it's black with the gold eagle on the bonnet if it's done like the Bandit's car, right?

ido09s - did you ever have that as a number plate, and at one stage have it on a white Mazda E-series or Ford Econovan? If so, I used to see it in my street a lot up unitl recently/ Oh, and are you also from SAU (or even SDU)?

I agree with the old schoolers thing.

Did any of you guys ever head up the F3 for the Sydney Vs Newcastle runs... would have been big in 03 i think.

I remember a Yellow lancer 2 door (evo 3 gear in it IIRC) chopping a few Sydney cars one week. The word got out and following week about 10 high HP cars (including that gold ex Top secret/Autostyle imports GTR) turned up.

A mate knew Dom and i got a shotgun ride in the GTR. Remember Dom changing in to 3rd, the car wheel spun and just powerslid about 300-400m while going past the above mentioned Lancer.

Back in 99 or 00 One night out west somewhere (Ingleburn maybe???) doing hellis for about 10-15 mins. Cops showed up and blocked us in. I went to try talk my way out and the copper said that he would only let me go if my RX2 could do a better skid than the falcon they just busted..... So i gave it a shot and did a skid.

The police thought it was funny that I had the balls to do a skid so I only copped a defect for the exhaust and that was it. Pretty much every car there got red labeled.

Also, for those more senior around here. There is a thread on Ausrotary full of old "tales" from even pre our time, both legal and not so legal.

The 'floodgates' really were opened circa 2004 when a whole lot of 1989 build cars became eligible for import under the old '15 year rule'. This rule was different from the usual scheme in place in that cars 15 years or older didn't require the usual compliance by a workshop, just relatively minor things like child restraints, intrusion bars, and a few other things...

Hence in 2004/2005 there was a huge spike in cars like S13s and R32s coming into the country, and a shitload of them were absolute rubbish. Unfortunately this meant that in 2005 the federal government moved to change the rule to pre-1988 cars only. Further, this date won't change until 2018.

You can read more about it here:

My dad used to tell me stories from late 60's to early 80's.

He was in to rotaries back then. Bought the old penrith Mazda racing rx2 when it was about 2 years old and used it as his street car. Used to scare a few monaros and gt's back in the day.

EDIT: at the time i had a tidy ae82 sedan with 20v silvertop as a first car and it was mindblowing what was being done with these engines
