View Full Version : Adam's NA8C Clubman

Built in October '93, Complied by Mazda Australia November '94. Thats kind of odd because when I was trying to compile a register of all the Clubmans they all had very close build and compliance dates. Perhaps this was the prototype or the Motor Show display car, or perhaps it just sat around somewhere because the Clubmans weren't selling very fast. Who knows.

When I bought it it was completely stock. Bilsteins, Torsen diff, no P/S. Optioned with air con. Managed to go though about 120 litres of PULP in the first week I had it doing hills runs every night, such a good car to drive.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/mx54.jpg
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/mx51.jpg

Then I started buying stuff for it. First it got some Kings Springs and EBC Greenstuff pads all round. Even though the Clubmans sat lower than normal NA8 MX5's to start with it had looked a bit 4wdish so an inch off the ride height made it look a bit better without screwing with the handling too much. Had my aligner mate set it up, didn't really like what he'd done at first but I guess I've come to be used to it.

I then bought an exhaust from a crashed NA6 race car and while I was picking it up the bloke asked me if I wanted to buy any wheels, I tried to explain that I wasn't interested until I saw what he had... So I ended up with some 15x7 +17 BuddyClub P1's. When I picked them up they had some old 205/50 semi slicks on them, so test fitting was a laugh because the square sidewalls of the semis stuck out of the guards. Looked cool though. I didn't have the cash for new 195/50/15's at the time though so just stored the wheels. Couldnt be bothered fitting the exhaust either so that just sat aswell. Sold the 1.6 extractors that came with the exhaust though, for more than I'd paid for the entire lot haha.

At this point I took it to a dyno day and ran it back to back with another Clubman which made I think 15% more power than I did, the only difference being that car had a Loch Stewart intake, so the next day I went to Autobarn and found an enclosed pod which was the same as the one MX5Mania use in their intake kit and cabletied that into place. Probably should make a bracket at some point...

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/pod1.jpg

The stock numberplate mounts suck on these cars, the nuts behind the plate pit the paint on the nosecone so I decided I needed to copy Justin's side mount. Easy as.

So I went and bought the bits, planning on using a strap of very thin galvanised iron for the bracket. Cut and measured everything then when it came to drill the holes..... I discovered that my housemate's drill wont drill through the galv... Not a problem, I figured I'd just put the standard bracket back on... except I'd already broken it (well, actually I just didnt want to put the standard bracket back on)

I needed something as a temporary bracket so I could drive to work...

Enter the lid of a can of tuna - taking the lightweight idea to the max

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/ghettobracket2.jpg

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/ghettobracket3.jpg

This actually worked REALLY well. I made a better bracket a week later but my idiot friend insisted it would be easier to rivet the plate to the bracket instead of bolting it but he drilled the fucking holes too big and the plate rattled like hell. The tuna can was far better.

Sometime around then I had the top bolt for the left rear calliper fall out while I was on my way to work and jam against the inside of the wheel. That kind of sucked but I managed to do some dodgy fix to get it back home.

I let idiot cousin drive it one night and after doing fine while driving fast he managed to put it off the road, up an embankment and through a fence at 40kmh after he locked up on a corner that had some gravel/sand on it and kept the brake pedal on the floor expecting ABS to kick in. My car doesn't have ABS. Smashed the drivers mirror, drivers window, cracked the radiator top tank, broke the aerial, scratched almost the entire car (I think the back bar and the rear passenger side guard were the only untouched panels) and the offset numberplate had gotted tangled in the fence wire causing the wire to slice into the front bar. Was not happy Jan! Drove it back home after we'd gotten it back onto the road as although the top tank was cracked it hadn't really lost any water and nothing felt loose.

Next day we replaced the window, fitted bike mirrors (since we'd been joking about doing that for a while) and fitted another radiator but it turned out the bloody bottom tank on that one was broken so we had to take that back to the wreckers the next day, while we were there I found a set of red 14x6 +40 Black Racing rims which I picked up for a song. Fitted them, the third radiator and the race car exhaust (much bigger diameter, no resonator and just one very dead muffler that did sfa) the next day, and it was back on the road but looking a little sorry for itself.

Still needed to fit these though

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/P7290022.jpg

Ended up finding a mate was selling some 195/50/15 Yoko ..... err can't remember the model. Good tyres though. Bought them and had them fitted to the BuddyClub's.

Then the alternator belt tensioner fell off when I was going up Gorge Road one day, luckily I was stuck behind traffic at the time. I found everything but one bolt, so limped back to town to the Mazda dealer and got a bolt that would fit and then stuck it back on.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/mx5_norton_summit_rd.jpg

The exhaust got progressively noisier and developed that "hole in exhaust" noise we all hate. I thought there was just a hole in the pipe. Then the muffler literally fell off when I was going down Gorge Road in pursuit of some other car. The welding from the pipe going into the muffler had broken almost all the way around and it was just held on by a dag so I kicked it off, chucked the muffler on the passenger seat and blew my ear drums going back up and down Gorge Road. Jeez it was loud :)

Got a new muffler fitted the next morning but the muppets I took it to put a 2 inch muffler on my 2.5 inch exhaust. ****s. In 3 months it seems like I've pretty much killed this muffler, its really noisy now so I might take it back with their warranty since i actually saved the recipt for once.

I also took the drivers seat apart and removed a heap of foam so I sit a bit lower, I can fit a finger between the top of my head and the roof now. I'd already removed the sunvisors because when they were folded down I literally couldnt see anything and when they were folded up they still obscured a heap of my view.

Changed the plates, sanded the whole car in preperation for getting it painted (not back to metal, just a couple of layers of paint, but pulled most of the paint off the front bar) and bogged a couple of shopping trolley dents from before I got the car. It stayed like that for months and months because I still want to flare the guards a bit and do a few more things before painting the car properly.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/clbmn5_2.jpg

Ugly hey. So I gave it a very quick spray with some white paint that was laying around the other day when it was freezing cold, did a shit job, heaps of runs, but I'll sand it a bit and go back over it a bit better this week, that'll make it look a bit better until the respray happens.

Drove it for a while with some 14x6 +20 Weds Sports that I found, lightest wheels I've ever picked up, serious feather weight stuff. They made the steering and handling sweet as. The BuddyClubs on the other hand, while looking sweet, really were too heavy (even though they're far from a heavy wheel), you could just feel it when taking off and the extra track made the handling go all shitty.

Ended up getting some 15x6.5 +19 Volk's which I fitted last week, I think they look ok and they feel much better. Also fitted a front lip today, very happy with that.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a126/jameslorenz/Adams%20MX5%20Pics/IMGP6210.jpg

Still on the agenda is a respray, guard flaring (and some 25mm bolt-on spacers for when I want the fully sik Jap spec look but don't need the handling to be sweet) and possibly some sideskirts so I can keep the original black sills but have white skirts over the top so you don't see the sills. Winscreen surround will be black. Apexi SAFC has to be fitted, last dyno run shows it runs realllly rich so leaning it off a bit ought to reduce the fuel consumption and maybe make some extra power

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/clbmn5_75rwkw.jpg

I'd like a hardtop (in black to match the windscreen surround), Bond Davis roll cage (powder coated black), maybe a lighter flywheel and a new clutch. Extractors would be nice but mainly for looks as there isn't meant to be much to gain over the standard 1.8 headers. Heat wrapped rather than ceramic coated or polished I think. Some new NA8 mirrors would be nice, getting kind of tired of the bike ones. The back would do with being a tad lower aswell. I'd be happy for it to look something like this red one

Mate.. what an AWESOME writeup!!!!

I was in Adelaide in April and had the absolute PLEASURE of blasting up and down the full length of the Gorge 'Scenic' Drive twice. My oh my what a wicked road .... even with a dead stock lancer wagon, i had it bouncing off the limiter a few times whilst the adrenalin was pumping. lol Over half those pics look to of been taken in 'The Gorge' :p

Love the new wheels and lip too, but the current plate mounting position not so much :P

Yeah I'll have to spend some time making a full-length bracket so I don't have to drill new holes in the current plate. It's just cable-tied in at the moment... Could quite possibly be tilted up to an unreadable position, though I'm sure I'd never do that

rodent
09-07-07, 04:39 PM
What I used were TWO right-angle brackets from Bunnings and a couple of bolts to hold it all together. Only uses one of the top holes on the plate, and allows you to adjust angle and tilt of the plate.

Bolt the first bracket to the towhook so it faces the right (so from the front it looks like this: _|) then bolt the other bracket to it from the side so it pivots. Nuts, wish I had a picture when it was on my car :P

Err... theres 8 different sets of rims in those photos... In the first pics of it stock it had some weak multispoke Enkies on the front and stock rims on the back. I have a few ideas for the next wheels, just depends on what i can find at a decent price and what offsets and widths I think I can get away with running on the street without getting pulled over all the time

I'm going to take it out though as the top bar sits too low and I can't see anything in the mirror

I've done a few little things this week, new battery bracket so the new taller battery is held in place, new headlight globes after the left lowbeam died the other night and left me hoping like hell that I wouldn't get pulled over for it, and I fitted a Walbro pump. Need to look at fuel pressure regulators now

Had it dyno'd on Wednesday to check that the tune that was in the ecu when I bought it suited my car, they made a few changes, ended up with 114rwkw at 6psi on a tune that is still safe with the stock injectors (I want to try and get it to pass an emissions test on the stock injectors before putting my 550's in).

I'm happy with ~150rwhp for the moment, more would be nice but it only made 69rwkw at the same workshop when it was stock, so 114 is still a decent increase

Needed to take my Watanabes and stockies to the tyre shop to get the tyres swapped from the watanabes to the stockies because some guy offered me decent coin for the watanabes, and I cant take the car there during the week. Solution - Put the SSR's on. I've never had all four on the car at the same time as I never finished rolling the rear guards before I broke my guard roller, and the rear wheels stick out a mile so I think it'd last about five minutes on the road before yellow sticker time. looks tops mate! would you consider running a small bolt on flair to hide the wheels a bit? Mine has 15x8 + 15's on it and id say its just on the borderline of what you can get away with on the street

we should try to organise a little adelaide jdmst mx5 run!

I've thought about bolt-ons, but I think they'd make it more obvious that theres been a few other mods to the car even when the wide wheels are off... I dunno, need to make my mind up before the car gets painted. It's on stock NA8 wheels now and looks shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit with pulled front guards

I've had the MKIII's on it for most of the year but took them off yesterday because they might be going on something else soon.

Wish I'd taken some photos with a decent camera....

SSR Mk3's will be going on my Mk3 Golf (and yes....... thats pretty much why I bought the Golf hahaha)

Base model 3 door, was stock as a rock when I got it. Is now somewhat slammed and could go quite a bit lower if I wanted to get pulled over every time I drive it. Put a set of VR6 seats in it last night, so much nicer to drive now.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/Golf/f2215548.jpg

Just waiting for a mate to machine up some hubcentric rings for it so I can put the Mk3's on, because the studs are on the wheel nuts, not in the hub.

On the MX5 front, I finally got around to getting a mechanic to look at the oil leak. Put it on the hoist and we discovered two things.

1) Oil was leaking from the gearbox so most likely the rear main seal was gone

2) The alarm which I thought was disconnected (I've never seen a keyfob remote or anything for it) does have power going to it because it went fucking mental when the car was up near the roof, I thought it was his 370Z going nuts. Had to pull the battery out to shut it up, cut the wires to it the next morning.

He didn't have time to take the box out to fix the seal so I took it back a week later. Turned out that the rear main seal was actually pretty good, but when the guy I paid to do that and the timing belt/water pump etc before putting the turbo kit on this engine, did the seal he used the wrong kind of sealant with the plate that sits below it. He used the stuff that goes hard and brittle and cracks instead of staying rubbery, and the oil was pissing out of a big crack into the bellhousing.

That plate below the big round seal

Is that a retail dump pipe? Flat section to miss something?

At least do a test fit on the Golf FFS! PLEASE!

Adam
18-09-10, 02:16 PM
Yeah thats the AVO dump, its reallllllllllly close to a lip on the firewall

I did test fit them the day I got the Golf but didn't take photos because it was 4wd spec rideheight (I could fit my fist (knuckles to the side) between the tyre and guard at stock height) but I need to run 5mm spacers on the front to clear the brakes which is a massive pain in the arse to put on with no studs in the hub

Jace.

Fuck log bolts. Period.

Oh well, I'm looking forward to seeing them fitted. :)

Hmm, its been a while since I've been on here...

Test-fits on the Golf first, since someone asked.

I did see how the SSR's fitted but didn't take any photos, had problems with guard clearance and clearing the brakes. I did chuck another set of VS-XX's I bought on it though. 17x7.5 +28, 17x8 +22

I drove the MX5 a bit in the last few weeks for the first time since October or November last year, I'd forgotten how much fun it was. Still trying to empty a tank of 6 month old fuel

Chucked the VS-XX's on it as well, but they weigh a ton so I took them off and put the MK3's back on (also quite a bit heavier than the stockies, but I'll live with it)

They look lost in the front guards because when I rolled the guards I also pulled the fronts out by about an inch, it looks REALLY funny with stock wheels on it

Probably going to give the Golf to my little brother because this arrives in a week or two to take over daily duties (which is a lie, I drive my cars like twice a week, once to work at my second job on the weekend and once to the supermarket, neither of which are more than 5kms away)

Can you say "mint" ? The heater control surround is spotless, normally the colour is worn away from use on that and the air con button

Hmm, haven't been on here for a while....

Haven't done anything with the MX5 in ages, I bought a pair of front NB SE calipers but still haven't found rears so brake upgrade is still on hold, which is probably a good thing because I don't think my wheels would fit over them and I don't realllllly want to run 16's or bigger

I bought a set of Panasport Prorallys for it with Dunlop Direzza Z1's

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/parts%20and%20mods/6c4c8fbb.jpg

Didn't think much of the colour though, so $2 Export cans were called for

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/parts%20and%20mods/23445028.jpg

Flat black really isn't good for photos without good light though....

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/parts%20and%20mods/a0b240e0.jpg

Work car got reversed into by a truck so when it went into the panel shop I decided to use the MX5 for work for a few days. In preperation for this I figured it might be best to remove the rollbar so I found the stock brace and the bag of bits that it uses and spent twenty minutes in the carpark at work swapping them around. Hardtop hadn't been off for a year or two, I don't know why so many people complain about getting them on and off on their own though, its pretty easy (I'll admit that I did it at work because theres more room around the car though, doing it at home theres slightly too much of a risk of scraping it against the wall or something)

Its a cleaner look I guess...

It was going really well until one afternoon I was coming back into the city just after 5pm and heard a BANG and grinding sounds, immediately dropped it in neutral and rolled into a side street, thought the exhaust had fallen off at the dump... Intercooler had fallen off the front of the car and was getting dragged by the rubber piping. Everyone else seems to complain about their cooler pipes popping off, mine did the exact opposite and stopped the intercooler from getting hit by other traffic

A couple of minutes assessing the situation allowed me to devise a cunning plan

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/MX5/parts%20and%20mods/b67d9e5f.jpg

Is there anything they can't do? From what I deduced later when i went to fix it, it looks like the nuts got pulled right through the sheet-metal of the body. I've kind of fixed it with some big washers but I think I need to look at a more solid way to mount it than the two tabs that the kit uses

I only really fixed the cooler because it looked like the DR30 wasn't going to get registered in time for the Classic Skylines Nationals (ended up juuuust scraping in, got registered at 4:30pm on a wednesday, left for Goulburn at 5am Thursday) so I was going to need something to drive. Guess it was a good excuse to service it, fix the cooler and chuck the Mk2's back on (dropped the Panasports to my mates place to chuck in his ute as he was towing his GTR over, so the MX5 wheels made it to Goulburn...) but ended up taking the DR30. It would have been interesting to see what this was like at Wakefield Park though I've got a feeling I probably would have had a problem with scrutineering

DR ran well on the way over and polished up nicely for the show n shine

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/dr30mk2/8D41FA63-26E1-4243-B570-212F07CF5CD9-7507-0000064846C97243.jpg

And felt like... a truck? at Wakefield Park

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/dr30mk2/IMG_2851_resize.jpg

But it was a successful trip

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/dr30mk2/CBE6DDFE-8432-422D-9065-621DD8EA4859-2996-0000055B7A665346.jpg

After an evening at the pub I jokingly suggested to my mate that he needed to buy some wheels for his Yaris, his reply was "Well have you got any?"

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/Adam_NAclubman/Friends%20cars/3DC7587A-45E3-4D92-8940-CEDDE6CE3513-16150-00001BFF595CED8F.jpg

Turns out that 17x7/8 Work VS-XX's fit much better than I'd thought they would... Still need to convince him to get some coilovers (and to pay me for the wheels...) but it looks pretty chunky from a 3/4 view when it drives down the street
