Hey, this'll be my occasionally updated diary/build thread (not much will be modded, not for now anyway).

I bought it about 2 weeks ago, looked like this.

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6229/6375466335_475e9a6569_z.jpg

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6238/6375464205_5c1b0afa7d_z.jpg

I am the third owner, and the second owner was an old lady. Under 100,000 km's, interior is pretty much spotless and brand new. In fact, apart from the scrapes on every single panel (the old lady was pretty much blind, apparently), the whole car is pretty much brand new.

First 'modification/weight reduction' was removing the grandma hubcaps, and cleaning up the black stockers.

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6103/6380493955_60d6a1a020_z.jpg

A few days later, just in chatting, J_hui and I decided on a photochop/rendering of how i'd like it to turn out some day.

The parts/spec list was lowish, black spoke/polished lip watanabes, fog lights and a lip of some kind (spam had taught me that the mx83 cressida lip would fit, but the ae92 sx lip wouldnt).

He being the photoshop genius he is, came up with this.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7009/6387190623_c724e10e0f_z.jpg

I was pleasantly suprised with just how good it came out, and that then led to serious plans to replicate it in real life.

Today, my brother and I installed a slightly worn MX83 Cressida lip- but it suits the bumper, because its all scraped up anyway, ahah.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7032/6423934597_1b0cae6bfc_z.jpg

I'm going to give it a wash in the morning, if the weather is ok, and better pictures will follow.

Looking at buying a new stereo, first and foremost. We test fitted the cheap, almost CR Kai knock off wheels my brother got with his Swift GTI as well today, and they actually fit well, and look pretty damn good. So hopefully i'll either buy or be given them some time in the next few months.

Keep watching this thread :)

Nice pickup mate !
Yes, the ae92 sx lip won't fit right on a S2 front bar, you'd need the S1 bar. You can also put on a Mazda 626 lip which has a nice clean look to it over the MX83 lip.
..and yeah dude, you so have to replicate JHui's photochop ! :D

So I havent washed it, because the rain is pretty iffy, theres a few drops of rain every now and then, but I know if i start, its going to start raining, so might as well not bother.

I did take a couple of new pictures though.

Thanks for the support guys, we did see a 626 lip after we'd taken the cressy lip off, but I like the look of the cressida lip more anyway.

If the weather is good on the weekend, i'll wash it. If not... i'll take it through a carwash I guess... lol.

edit: ahahah, we even saw a camry lip, nearly took that, but figured it'd be a pain in the ass because its sculpted to the camry bumper. Really changes the look of the camry though, holy shit.

That picture looks awesome!! all it will need is an SX rear spoiler, and maybe instrument cluster aswell and then its all good!!

looking forward to seeing your plans turn real

haha dude, i went down the camry lip path. The sides won't fit in terms of length (too short) and it looks too big, didn't look nice. But mainly, the sides not being long enough don't make it look good. The Cressida one looks nice though.
As Rolla_Kid said, SX spoiler will do great on this. :)

Pr0ph3cy
01-12-11, 02:30 AM
Yeah the SX spoiler has been on my mind since I got it, couldnt find any in the wreckers, but I should be able to pick one up off ebay cheapish. Thanks guys :)

btw, what do you mean by instrument cluster? Additional gauges?

edit: oh, or the gauge cluster from the SX- were they very different?

01-12-11, 12:42 PM
Yeah, wait around for people wrecking sx secas, and you may be able to pick one up. There's a guy in Merrylands who is wrecking one or two, pm me if you want his details, yeah ?
From the inside, the SX Dash does look alot nicer, but you'll have to relocate your HU if it's at the top in place of most of those guages. Also, besides looks, it's not too necessary unless you're revving above 8K rpm like a blacktop 20v conversion.

Pr0ph3cy
01-12-11, 06:57 PM
Yeah I only thought about that when I got in mine this morning and realized thats where the HU is. Oh well, i'll think about that down the track too. Is that on ebay (the guy wrecking sx's), I think I saw them. I reckon i'll get a spoiler off him.

Pr0ph3cy
02-12-11, 04:51 PM
My newest addition. And a black url sticker, but as its on the darker part at the top of the rear window its pretty much impossible for the camera to focus on it.

Umm, I think he's on ebay. I know that atm, he's wrecking a 20v hatch, a GZE Seca and I think another Seca. He's on Twincam, username Adz (something after that, can't remember).
Stickers are looking good ! You going to the JDMYard End of Year Meet ?

looking forward to the pics mate :)

Pr0ph3cy
06-12-11, 11:13 PM
lol no idea of the brand- im assuming a cheapy korean brand, theres no sticker or stamping on the front of any of them, there may be something on the back of the spokes I guess. White 5 dual spokes- nearly like CR Kai's.

edit: freakin genius, here they are on my brothers swift gti.

I miss my AE92 =(

Pr0ph3cy
23-01-12, 01:23 AM
Not much of an update, but pics so thats ok? lol.

About 2 weeks ago my brother and I installed a new stereo, no new speakers or anything, I was just tired of the crappy standard radio and not being able to listen to my own music (metal head, no station covers what I want lol). Its a Kenwood. Nothing too special. Got back from a week away down the coast yesterday, washed it this afternoon, looks brand new again :D

So to anyone who knows/any other ae92-94 'rolla owners, what else is out there for this model in terms of visual and performance mods? Im tempted to get a new exhaust (not sure how good/'jdm' but not just a Super Cheap Auto fart can) but I dont know what to look for, as this is maybe the least performance oriented model of the lot.

So yeah to help with that question i'm thinking about a new grill (does the slatted ae92 grill fit, and if it does, how easy is the swap? I think its much more attractive than the ae94 one), the sx spoiler (how easy is that to put on, do I need to replace the entire hatch, how hard is it to do a rear windscreen wiper delete?)- and also, how hard is it to get some good quality OEM floormats? Mine are quite worn, the carpet bits are coming up quite badly at the edges. I'm also thinking about foglights. I saw a pair of rectangular ones at Super Cheap Auto, cant remember how much they were, just remember they were decently sized (meaning they werent huge or tiny) and yellow. Would it be easy to mount them on the front bar? I'm thinking some steel/aluminium... 'bits' attached to... I dunno, something behind the bumper could work, but yeah, as you can see I havent investigated very far ahah. This might sound a bit silly, but would it be looked down upon to have cheapy fog lights? I'm going for the look, more or less, they arent a necessity.

lol... I've also seen, as i'm sure you have, this model with the piece between the tail lights, on the hatch (where the number plate is screwed into), painted to match the car, rather than look like tail lights. Is this a factory or aftermarket thing? Can you simply paint over it?

Sorry if thats too much or incomprehensible lol.

I'd just finished vacuuming the car after cleaning it and thought the light was pretty much perfect for me to try some pics with the headlights on, and I also realized i'd taken no shots of the interior yet- actually, no shots of any interior ever, so it was a good opportunity to start experimenting. I hope they show just how good it is inside, theres hardly any wear on anything, or marks. I do loathe the incredibly bland grey blue on grey colour scheme though... How hard is it to vinyl dye things? I'm thinking black on grey would be nice...

And I thought i'd do this one just to see what it'd look like (roughly), inspired by black roof's on 180sx's. Didnt look too good with the white bonnet, but with a black one... I think i'm onto something... lol.

Hey, for these cars, if you're running the 4afe, or 4afc, i'm afraid there's nothing you can really do in terms of performance without engine swapping a 4age into there. If you plan on swapping it later on, don't waste money trying to mod the 4af (you won't get anywhere). With Visual, there's plenty of things like wheels, sx front bar with lip, sx rear spoiler, low etc. Just the usual things. If you wanna try, you can maybe black out your headlight, though it'll require pulling it apart, painting the inside, and re-sealing it back together.

If you want an exhaust, maybe head down to Carline, and see what they can do for you. When I had my 4afe in mine, i had a lukey sports muffler + axle back (which looked to be about 2" in diameter. It was still pretty quiet, but sounded nice when you put your fut down. You can get a full catback system, header back full exhaust system too, but it'll get alot more expensive from then.

About the grille, if it's from an ae92/ae94 seca, it'll be a straight swap, no hassles. For the sx spoiler, if you don't want to change your boot, you can sikaflex it onto to your current one, and it'll be fine. You can also buy a bootlid, and it'll have the holes to clip it in already there.

For the floormats, you can simply head down to your local auto store, and buy black floor mats to suit an ae94, and it'll look neat.

I'm not sure too much on foglights, as i've never fitted any to a car, but if you're after looks, try to get it fit as subtle as possible, and it'll look nice. The out of place ones are the ones that'll look weird.

The middle piece that you're thinking of between the taillights, I assume you're talking about the garnish. Yes, you can simply paint over it, but it'll make it look weird and awkward. The garnish helps the look flow through the rear IMO. I'd just leave it as is.

Sorry for long post :P hope it helps though :)

No thanks HEAPS for the long post, so much useful info :) My dad actually goes back a few years with Wayne at Carline (your talking about the one in Penrith thats not actually called carline anymore yeah?), theyve rebuilt the engine in his mustang a few times now (hopefully for the last time, this week...).

I had thought about swapping a 4age in, maybe in the future.

hey mate i was in Supercheap today. they have this bar for the fog light so you attatch it to your bumper so you have something for the fog lights to attach. its $34.98 http://media.supercheapauto.com.au/sca/images/219098.jpg

You can make a bracket for the foggies easy enough from the bumper support bars

4AGE Conversion isnt too difficult, should take you 3 days to install the motor only thing is it takes a little longer to do wiring :P

When you say make a bracket, what exactly do you mean? Piece of steel bent the correct ways to weave through the bumper to the bumper support bars, then attach the lights to the steel? (or other applicable metal pieces)

Thanks to Meadan for the new grill, and I also picked up his aqua sx/rv spoiler that we should be repainting in the next few weeks.

Also debadged/destickered the bootlid, partly in preparation for the spoiler, but mainly because the corolla badge was faded to shit and the CSi stickers are pretty ghey (also took the ones of either side of the car as well).

edit again: and I was thinking before about painting the grill (just the slats) white, like the sx grill's were, would it be as easy as painting right over the top, or would I have to sand the plastic back, or would it be more complex/simply not work?

meadan
27-01-12, 09:02 PM
Sand or scotchbrite it, dont use anything too rough.
Primer, then paint it.

I reckon it would look good in a metallic charcoal colour.

Wow that'd be a great find at a wreckers lol, i'd rather the FXGT bumper to be honest, that post was about the offset number plate.

And yeah, twincam.org.au not accepting new memberships :\

I like the idea of painting it white (the grill), in ae92 sx styling (in fact, if I could get a full white sx trim set cheapish I would, not a fan of the black trim anymore...). Wouldn't the paint chip off pretty easily though, being glossy plastic- although, you did say to sand/rough it up a little. I reckon I might do that, surely roughing it up a little would keep the paint there.

So I have more questions...

First of all, I noticed a few stone chips on the drivers side of the front window a while ago, didnt think much of them at the time, but now its getting close to rego... Theyre pretty small (max 2.5mm), would they pass, or would I need a new windscreen?

Whats allowed in terms of aftermarket steering wheels? I've heard quick release systems are illegal, but thats about all I actually know apart from the term 'boss kit', and I dont know what that actually is. lol.

Third- i'm pretty sure I want to go for some amber corners/parkers, how would I do that to the lights I have now?

MKH
28-01-12, 12:05 AM
Small stone chips should be fine if they aren't in the driver's direct view(my car was passed last week with a chip).

As for aftermarket wheels, it depends on how old the car is, and if it has airbags fitted as standard. I would double check the relevant ADR's before buying a wheel to avoid getting defected.

Pr0ph3cy
28-01-12, 12:08 AM
Dont think it has any airbags. Link to ADR's? (what does that mean lol, i've seen it a few times around the place)

ive been scouring the earth for a nice set of black 14" rims for the corolla. they are impossible to find! i might buy some white ones and powdercoat them. as to why black? i popped off the hubcaps as soon as i got the car. realised the black rims on white car looks the goods

SX wheels make a good temporary set of wheels though. Gives the stocker look. I had SX stockies on while i was looking for a set of wheels, after I sold my old 17x7s

Looks nice man use to have a ae92.

Loved it to bits.

Just get some nice 15" wheels. I had 17:s too big imo.

Only performance you can do to the 4afe/c. Is chuck it out and get a 4age. If you want na get a blacktop if you want a forced get 4agze or silver with stronger internals.

I was going to buy another corolla to put a k20 or k24 as i love the hatchs and look better then an eg civic

Oh and plans have updated.

With the spoiler, i'm going to see how it looks with just the bootlid part, I saw a red seca without the side bits and it looked alright- but I was driving and i only saw it for a second or 2, so I could be wrong.

Maybe this weekend i'm going to take the headlights apart and paint the grey surrounds. Eventually i'll tint the tail lights as well.

I had a closer look, and please someone correct me if i'm wrong, but I think the black 'trim' on the front and rear bumpers are just painted on? I might get the bumpers resprayed at some stage down the track, and i'll remove the black trim off the sides as well- might do that soon, not sure.

I may be getting some lowering springs from someone at twincam.org.au in the next few weeks, and im getting sick of the black steelies so i'll be getting some tyres for my cheapy wheels soon as well. Hopefully I can have them both by eomm, but I dont like my chances lol.

Brakes are getting REALLY squeeky, so I might look for some slotted rotors on ebay soon too. Anyone got a better idea for slotted rotors, from a more reliable place than ebay?

Grill will still be painted when the spoiler is, and i'm thinking about painting and refitting the lip too (not sure about where it sits anymore, it doesnt seem like its forward enough).

Oh and I should be getting a boss kit (at least) from a guy at twincam.org.au. I was thinking about a suede Nardi style wheel from Otomoto.

edit: oh all those pictures HAVE been touched up in photoshop, but no major changes.

Took the headlights apart, painted the ugly grey surrounds.

Took both my grills apart and painted the clear grey plastic bits white.

Painted the SX spoiler, at long long last, its on the car :) Thanks again, Meadan :)

Also removed the black trim from the sides. Oh and dont worry, that TRD badge wont be going back on any time soon, have been over it for a while.

So I did some research, and i'm happy with cutting half a coil/a coil off my stock springs for lows FOR NOW. Proper suspension bits, possibly even coilovers in the next 12 months are planned, i'm just sick to death of driving a front wheel drive fourby lol. I also came to the conclusion that this would be a great car to convert to track duty once I get a new car.

Anyways, I've been dying to take it somewhere and do a proper shoot (well... I have no lighting equipment etc, if thats what you think of a 'proper' shoot :P) with the new stuff. Went up to Hawkesbury Heights with my girlfriend at sunrise yesterday. Good bit of road, hehe.

Nice seca bro its coming along nicely.
With cutting the springs, Ive done it in my SSS.
I took one coil off the front and it didnt effect anything, dosnt bottom out or nothing bad like that. Drove that around for a while and its sweet.
On friday i cut one and a half off the rears. Its sweet beside bottoming out on a few bumps and one of the rubbers is fucked on the left side and it squeaks. I wish i had only taken one coil off.
IN NO WAY AM I RECOMMENDED THIS!! Its is illegal and fucks your struts. Im getting coilovers very soon.
i am purely shearing my experience.

I find the stock seats very comfy, as I think ive said way too many times lol, the interior is brand new basically, the seats are still really firm.

Proper lows have been achieved, we put the matching pedders springs in today, level all round and very low, looks great.

Ive seen that picture before, looks nice, I know thats the FXGT bumper (do want), whats the lip?? In fact, whats going on with the entire front section? Custom work on the bonnet and a custom grill? Or is that all FXGT?

I swapped back to the AE92 SX slatted grill tonight, now that its painted (has been for a while now) and the car is low, and also with the wheels, it looks much better. I think i'll be keeping this grill on for a while, until I get sick of it like I did with the other one tonight lol.

Will take pictures tomorrow, and I will be at EOMM (certainly not a highlight of the meet for many people, but it'll be there for people to see in the flesh anyways)

Got some exciting things happening at the moment- got a series 1 sx bumper, hopefully/likely fitted in time for eomm, and i'm painting the chrome trims from the bumpers black, and also the black stripe on the rear bumper will be painted white. Very excited about the new bumper, lol, i've wanted it for so long. Really hoping that my cressida lip will fit the new bumper, worried that the new one is too wide...

Oh wow its been a little while since I updated this...

Since the new bumper has gone on, i've painted over the black strip on the rear bumper and painted its chrome strip black, painted the side mouldings/door trims/whatever you want to call them white/black stripe to match the bumpers, fiddled with my grills a lot, and test fitted Paolo's wheels.

I've lined up a whole other AE92 with 20v manual conversion that I plan to buy and transplant the good bits into mine in a few weeks (fingers crossed), possibly lined up a rear strut brace (a good one too :D), and new wheels and coilovers are on the horizon too. :)

Oh, and I redid my stickers!

How it is at the moment. Removed the 3 slats from the series 1 grill I have, quite like it.

I miss having stickers and badges showing what the car is, remembered I had this good condition series 1 badge on the floor in my bed room (as you do), stuck it on with some left over double sided tape (from sticking the side mouldings back on), looks good :)

Are the hatch and sedan wider than the seca? They fit well on the hatch, but stick out over an inch even without spacers on my car.

I'm having some trouble with the double sided tape I used, by the way. It isnt 3m brand, but the guy I spoke to at Scotts Auto 1 told me it'd do the job (I explained what I was doing) and it even says that its good to stick side mouldings back on on the back of the packaging- its not all that sticky, I often come back to my car and the actual side moulding is either peeling off the door or its sagged at either end or the middle- would good quality 3m brand double sided tape work, or is there something else I should use for this? (Not any kind of glue or anything that will damage the paint should I remove them).

Yes they are og's :) Thanks man, I really want a set now, and yeah, paolo explained to me that his sat the same before he added camber, so i'm much more confident.

LOL, its been another while since i've updated... 20v is not happening, not any time soon anyway, neither are OG's, i've got another set of wheels that'll do me for the foreseeable future.

Got camber bolts installed, theyre set at 2 deg. front and 3 rear, thinking about getting the rears set to 2 as well though.

Black Toyota badged grill acquired, as well as a pair of genuine Toyota SX headlight protectors, which are getting hard to find now.

Mudflaps removed, quite like it without.

Oh, and thanks to another JDMST member, rare rear visor/roof spoiler acquired :D It has been tinted with niteshades (not by me), but I dont mind, its still clear and looks good.

Wheels are 16x7, not sure of offset.

That just about does it for aesthetics. I'd still like to get the windows tinted- not a big issue though, and I'd love a JDM Sprinter (4 door) front bumper, but again, not a big issue.

Next up will be a rear disc brake conversion and front disc upgrade (RDA/DBA slotted rotors on the front and AE101 rear disc conversion, with RDA/DBA discs of some sort as well), new shocks (probably will come first) and new tyres. Then I can look at a manual+16v 4AGE swap, straight out of an SX :)

Lookin good, damn you and your rear windscreen visor, I want one!

I hear QFM race pads go well in these, might get a pair when I do my front brake upgrade.

I was considering making a mould for it so copies can be made if enough people are interested- not for free of course- not at all experienced with fibreglass or anything though.

I suppose take a down a list of names of interested parties, see how much it would cost for copies to be made, then take deposits?

Happened to find another visor at a wreckers yesterday, got it with the intention of selling it on to another Seca owner, gave it a wash and found that it looks like this

Well, once again, its been ages since I updated this...

Series 2 front bumper is back on, I painted the black strip on it white, looks much better. Put a 626 lip on it too, thanks to rolla_boy (i think thats his name? Justin, anyway, red ae82 twin cam lol). White xenon headlight bulbs, amber LED parkers, new tyres (Bridgestone MY02- quite nice, they arent very loud, grippy enough). Yeah.

I've actually lost my license for 6 months, running late, too fast on an m4 offramp, sneaky hwp... anyway, i- unlike many- dont resent and hate the cops for it, its my mistake, and i'm dealing with it. Means basically I have 6 months of the car being off the road and in project status, so hopefully I can get a new job soon, then I can do the rear disc brake conversion, upgrade the swaybars, upgrade the front discs, maybe some interior mods (i'm going for Bride drivers seat, Nardi wheel, SX gauge cluster, double din HU, new speakers, small sub, replace broken trims etc), then its ready for a new engine, possibly late this year :D (just a 16v, with manual box, but i'll have it rebuilt.)

edit: oh and hopefully some time soon the wheels will be repainted white.

Only tyre foam and photoshop, but gives you a vague idea of how they look. Much cleaner imo.

Hey dude I was wondering if you were willing to part with your rear window visor off your ae94, that's if you still have it :p. They're so difficult to come by, I don't know how you found two haha.

Cheers.

Massive amounts of luck is how I managed that lol. Sorry dude, already sold. Good luck finding one, they add so much to the shape of the car.
