A few pics from the previous owner in the car ad. (really good pics i reckon... one of the reasons I bought it)

So my previous car as you can probably tell from the pic above was an s15, which I owned for 4 years. It was pretty stock when I got it and only had coilovers and a turbo timer when I picked it up from the dealer (first owner in Australia). the car that I owned before the s15 was a non-turbo sw20 mr2.

Anyway, I proceeded to mod the s15 fairly slowly over the 4 years, and did a fair bit of the work myself (the easy bits that I could do at least). Well, after moving house and living closer to the city, I wasn't driving it as much and had taken it as far as I wanted to modification-wise.. I worked out that it would have cost me about another $5k to do the next stage, so decided to sell it and put the money to another car... so that's why I got the FD

The first order of business was fitting a catalytic converter to the car. The car was actually running a gutted cat when I got it... so it kinda stank, especially when the car wasn't moving. I wasn't particularly fond of sucking in those gases when stuck in traffic :|

however, the previous owner (George) was kind enough to include a racecat, which I got fitted by Fast Fit in Leichhardt.

Sent it in the next week to my regular mechanic (Autosport in Kirrawee - Sutho Shire) for a service, oil change + general check-over and all was pretty good.

I was back at Fast Fit a few weeks later to get a new muffler fitted. The car was previously running pretty much a 3" straight through exhaust.. so got a Xforce Varex VMK6-300 fitted to keep the noise levels down a bit. Never had the best of luck with my S15 (I got my fair share of infringements) so didn't want to push my luck too much with the FD, particularly since I live fairly close to the city and there are cops pretty much around every corner.

Old cannon exhaust:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-e0yS8ivRqcA/TugL-yuCm3I/AAAAAAAAAB8/_SPkynRtKTM/s640/IMG_20111125_231633.jpg

New Varex oval muffler.. looks a whole lot nicer IMO.

The varex is pretty amazing when adjusted.. it goes from whisper quiet to being almost as loud as the massive cannon that was previously on the car. In terms of top end power when open, it's hard to tell the difference. When fully open it also doesn't drone as much at lower revs, which was bloody annoying!

There's also bit of a difference in torque when the exhaust closed and cruising around town at low rpm (< 3000rpm) - the engine seems to pull a lot better. maybe because of the increased back pressure (?). Highly recommended muffler if anyone is looking around for one!

So I started hunting the net for a few bits and pieces that I wanted to replace. Came across a new centre console on ebay ($200). The old one was cracked and not in the best of shape. I got it from Marcus (spii) in Granville, who was good enough to show me his SPII, which was nothing short of amazing.

I also got a new RHS door handle from Marcus as well because it was starting to stick ($120), replacement locking mechanism for the door because the old one was bent slightly ($60) and an RE Amemiya oil filler cap for $50 (I forgot to take a pics - but will upload one later).

I also ordered a few bits from RHD Japan..

New arm rest (OEM Mazda)

Fitted to the car (also used as verification photo on the fdrx7 forums) :P

The gear knob is reallllllly heavy. Feels great when shifting... a whole lot smoother and feels more precise. i think it also suits the blue exterior nicely

I also got an ARC induction box from RHD Japan, which I actually wanted to cancel because they were taking so long to send the stuff. It was on special at the time, but decided that I'd get a proper CAI instead if possible (noticed a few for sale on these forums), but RHD were a bit slow in responding so I ended up with it anyway. Not sure if I'll fit it to the car.... if anyone is interested in buying it, lemme know. It's brand new!!

Took the car back to Autosport to get a few things looked at...
Greg @ Autosport was also good enough to track down a glovebox for me, because the old one was rooted, so that was fitted.

there was a bit of a whine, which I thought was coming from the diff, that I wanted looking at and what I thought was the air pump making a bit of noise. well it turned out NOT to be the air pump and it was the WATER pump that was making the noise. so that was promptly changed and the car is now all better. the whining has also magically disappeared too

not entirely sure what I'll be doing to the car next, I'm planning on tracking the car next year at least once but hopefully a few times, so definitely want to do something with the suspension. oh well.... i've only had the car for a couple months now, so only time will tell.

one final pic for now, which I kinda like, that was taken by a friend:

haha yeah.. not the most reliable of cars around but hopefully i'll be able to keep mine running for a while. water pump failure within the first few months of owning it isn't the most promising of signs though. already started doing some research on engine transplants as a result :P

a FD cruise sounds good though!

this is the 2nd time I've filled up with a tank of petrol costing more than $100. the previous time would have been a few years ago with a full tank of v-power racing in my s15

was mostly just normal city driving too. at least they say petrol prices are coming down... and the 8 cent discount docket from coles helps too. :D

i dont think ive ever had to spend more then 100 bucks think the most i have paid is like 92 or so.... but yeah going to natio at least uses half a tank of fuel... bye bye at least 50 bucks hahahaha.....
have you used BP ultimate... only ask cos ive used both in my rx7 and just wondering if you had to see which one you think is better....

Nope, haven't used BP ultimate yet. Most tuners and performance car enthusiasts will tell you that BP ultimate is more consistent in terms of RON. I go with v-power coz it's normally more convenient for me and the coles discount.. :P

plus the car isn't really highly tuned, so don't have any problems with pinging.

whether its true or not i have just found that BP ultimate tends to burn cleaner and provide a smoother throttle response yet i get less km's out of a tank, where v-power dosent seem to burn quite as clean yet i get more milage... just seeing if any other people were finding this with their FD's

That was normal driving... and I don't drive with a lead foot. I've filled up the car a few times and around 20L/100KM seems fairly standard for my car so far. It has been tuned fairly rich though for safety.

I will be getting it retuned in the near future after I add a few more mods and hopefully i'll get a bit more economy it with the new tune.

also, I haven't really given it a heavy workout yet... (i.e. lots of spirited driving). I'm kinda scared to see how quickly it'll burn through a tank of petrol. I'll hazard a guess that it'll do close to 30L/100KM at the moment if I give it a good kick in the backside.

Geez, 20L/100km for normal driving! How would you go taking an FD on a road trip, say, down to Melbourne?

I can't imagine how bad the economy would be with a built motor and a big single!

Check your 02 sensors man
When I had my fd as daily
I was Gettin same fuel economy as a previous vz sv6 daily

I still got two mates with series 8 s
And one of them was terrible on fuel
He got it checked out
And found faulty 02 sensors

If it's isn't too far from your
Race solutions in penrith is a good place
And very good with rotaries

New light and LED bulb fitted compared with the old one...
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NHZbHhA0NmI/TwQmA0bfuNI/AAAAAAAAAGM/oVWVqNvaEQ0/s400/6.JPG

one thing I noticed and don't really like about the new lights is they have a bit that sticks out compared with the previous ones (oem?) that were fitted.
you can see it in the pictures above.

there's a round bit of plastic that sticks out about 4mm above the indicator and park light lenses. that being said, they are an improvement over the old ones...

My evo uses around 40Lt for 300km(city driving), so its the same fill up interval but in a car like the FD you just need to pay extra money.

Idk if its just me, but does your car give off different shades of blue throughout the day, and I mean really different colours. During the day, its a clean bright blue. Arvo it settles into this deep blue colour. Night it gives off a little purple. Might be me but.

the colour is "innocent blue" and it does look pretty different in some of the photos I've taken. the last two shots were taken under a fairly orange street light, which is why it appears almost purple. i also changed the colour and light balance slightly in photoshop to make it a look more blue. in real life, it was a lot purpler (more purple) under the orange light than in the photos above :)

i'd be happy to upload the raw photos if anyone is interested.

Whats the comparison between your previous S15 and this RX7?

Kupo

Whats the comparison between your previous S15 and this RX7?

You used to own an S15 didn't you (or still do)? Anyways, my S15 vs FD3S comparison...

Power:
Power delivery feels a lot more linear and more peaky (i.e. needs the higher revs). The kick (torque) from the T28 when on boost in the S15 seemed a lot more brutal than the sequentials - due to the boost I was running in the S15.
Low end power I would say the FD is actually slightly better when just pootling around town. The gear ratios and smaller seq turbo means less changing of gears and more responsive power.

Handling:
The FD 'feels' a lot lighter than the S15 even though their weights are fairly similar I think. The FD does feel more balanced and with the shorter wheelbase, more nimble.
I do miss the handling of my S15 (aftermarket suspension). One of the things I loved was the feedback I got through the steering wheel felt a lot more connected to the car when throwing it into corners.
Steering in the FD feels a bit light for my liking, and turn in isn't as responsive (soft). I'll be putting a set of coilovers on the FD fairly soon I think..

The FD feels a bit more stable at high speeds. The S15 felt a bit more dangerous and unstable. Having said that, I haven't really tried to max the car yet..

Interior:
The insides of the FD feel a lot smaller and you do feel more enclosed in. The cockpit and driving position remind me a lot of the SW20 (the car I owned before the S15). It feels very dated compared to the S15, which has one of the best looking and most modern interiors for cars of that era I think.
Things like the speedo, tacho, indicator stalks, window controls.. etc feel old - again very much like the SW20. I'm not really a fan of all the the plastic they used for the doors in the FD, it feels a bit fragile as a result.

The back seats in the S15 were very cramped but still usable. The back seat in the FD is unusable and you're better off treating the car as a 2 seater as many of them were.

Build quality/Reliability:
There are far less squeeks and rattles in the FD than the S15. Overall the FD feels slighter better put together, but the finish and choice of some of the materials (e.g. the plastic on the doors) is better on the S15.
Engine wise - I never had any issues with the SR20 in the 4 years or so I owned it, no mechanical failures or major issues even with the mods I added. Having the water pump come close to failing on the 13B within a month of owning the FD isn't the best of signs for reliability. Only time will tell I guess...

I also had to replace the driver's side door handle, which was getting stuck fairly often. I'm not sure if that's due to how the car was maintained or if it's just poorly built / designed. A fairly common issue from what I've heard though.

Usability:
Apart from the high fuel consumption, the car rides a bit lower than an S15. Haven't gotten it suck yet, but had a few scrapes on steep driveways.
The headlights on it are pretty rubbish, they barely illuminate the road and don't have very good distance. It might be the HID kit that are on the car though... pop-up headlights are cool though. :P
A 6th gear would have been useful for highway driving and lack of one also contributes to the 'extra' fuel consumption due to the engine revs at highway speed.
The boot is pretty crap.. I don't have a cover and you can see things pretty clearly through the rear hatch. It's also fairly shallow and you can't put anything too tall in there. I came close to breaking the glass when went to close it and had a pair of metal car stands that weren't lying flat. :|

Aesthetics:
I find that people seem to really appreciate the FD. I'll often stop at a set of lights and a random person in the car next to me will start asking me questions about it, or I'll get a thumbs up from a random person on the footpath. Never happened to me in the S15..
It does turn a lot of heads compared to the S15, which was not a bad looking car by any means. RX7s seem to be fairly rare around Sydney - or maybe they owners decide to leave them in the garage at home because it costs so much to fill them up.. either way, I see a heap more S15s around.
But overall, I'm pretty happy with the car.

excuse the long rant/post...

Still waiting on the boss kit to arrive so wasn't able to fit the steering wheel on the weekend... got bored so decided to test fit my spare set of TE37s that I used to run on my S15. I was originally thinking of selling the TE37s but think I'll keep them. I've been trying to track down a set of the BBS rims found on the Spirit R and RZ models but haven't been able to find any at a decent price... plus I quite like how the bronze matches the blue.

Stock 16" rims.. as you can see they don't come anywhere close to filling the guards:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ZjATzIUeUEc/T0tc-AUuoOI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/7h4uiPPi0-Q/s800/012.jpg

TE37 fitted to rear (18x9.5 +40 with 275/35/R18) - from this angle it definitely looks like the car needs to be dropped a couple of inches:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-cZI9f17McF4/T0tdb06anBI/AAAAAAAAAIo/HubU0m6taB4/s800/050-4.jpg

And a random one from the rear (with the stock 16s fitted):
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-OKCRF9pd0eg/T0tc9wCXyvI/AAAAAAAAAIM/py4kGFiGQio/s800/015.jpg

I didn't bother fitting the fronts but I'm sure they'll go on without a problem - plus my trolley jack needs oil so had to use the scissor jack. I'll probably fit spacers to the rear to get the wheels to sit flush.. there's plenty of room on the stock guards to go wider or lower offset. I put the 16"s back on the car because I need to get some new tyres first. I'm also planning on taking it to the track, so not sure if I'll want to run 18"s all the time (due to higher tyre costs), or maybe get a set of 17s for the track.

Awesome FD! Definitely the best colour of them all :D

I went from Sydney - Melbourne, around Sydney, then back to Melbourne over Dec/January. I went through one and a half tanks each way, stock motor with a catback.

Thanks mate. Yeah, go blue :D

Interesting... I've been thinking of taking the FD on a roadtrip, and I'd love to take the FD down to Vic one day. The fuel costs were definitely on my mind... I wouldn't want to just drive to Melbourne (it'd be cheaper to fly), I'd want to explore some of the surrounding areas. Lots of great roads around Melbourne = lots of tanks of petrol! maybe one day..

Weather was fantastic all day while at the track and only started raining on the way back to Sydney. I also made it back home in time to catch the last 10 laps of the F1.

I'm also happy to report that the FD did very well on the highway and only used about a quarter of a tank to cover 200km+, which is great considering I was expecting the FD to burn through 2-3 tanks of petrol for the entire day.
It's the first time I've really taken it for an 'extended' journey. With the varex closed it was quiet and very stable cruising at 110km/hr (ish)

Had a bit of an interesting evening on Sunday... I took the car out for a spin and parked it on the street. I got back to the car a couple hours later and started it up only to have the "add coolant" light and buzzer come on. Turned off the engine quickly and popped the bonnet to checked the coolant levels. I filled it up with the water bottle I had in my car (about 500ml) and started it up again... add coolant light was still on. Turned it off again and walked to a near-by petrol station and grabbed a bottle of radiator coolant (1L) and topped off the radiator. After filling it up, I checked under the car and a lot of it had leaked out! there was a big green puddle of coolant under the car. not good :(

By that time it was starting to get dark and I couldn't see where the leak was and didn't want to risk damaging the engine by trying to drive it. So I called up NRMA and they sent out a service van, they had a good look around and topped off the coolant again then started it up. It looked like the primary culprit was the waterpump. again, I didn't want to risk driving it as it seemed to be dropping coolant fairly rapidly, so opted to get it towed to my mechanics. after a 1.5 hour wait (enough time to grab a feed and read the paper), the tow truck finally turned up..

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Xxykjdt85hg/T6iRU6O2ChI/AAAAAAAAARU/TGpZjiKGEj0/s800/IMG_20120506_201207_resized.png

I spoke with my mechanic yesterday arvo and it was the waterpump (thank goodness!!). this will hopefully be the one and only time the FD will be on the back of a tow truck.
Waterpump has been fixed and the FD will live to drive another day :P

sucks to hear man, i had a similar problem the other week, i was leaking coolant after leaving the car parked after driving it.... eventually turned it on and while letting it idle *to see if we could see where the leak was* we noticed that the AST was spitting out coolant from the hose that goes from the pump to the AST.... so lucky was something small.... will admit i had a bit of a stress moment when i thought it might have been a water seal...

Nah, not really. It was a new pump (put in less than 6 months ago?) so could have been a dodgy water-pump, incorrectly fitted, or had a bolt that was loose that wriggled its way out. I did see the old pump that got taken off and it was fairly rooted, but it was making quite a bit of noise. Anyway, latest dramas were all sorted out under warranty so no cash out of pocket apart from the $30 for the additional tow KMs that weren't covered by nrma.

I'd say get your reliability mods put in and stay paranoid (maybe not mad paranoid). Just keep an eye and ear out for anything odd and you're best to play it safe and get your car checked asap.

RX7 uses H4 bulbs. You'll also have to make sure the hid kit you get is a "hi/lo" one - since the RX7 uses the same bulb for high and low beam.

Also (when you have time Kupoi) could you post a photo up of headlight cutoffs? I'm curious to see how well HIDs work in an RX7.

Don't have proper gauges, but was keeping an eye on the water temps on the hand controller. water temps didn't go above ~110 degrees and the ambient temp were getting fairly warm by around noon.
I wasn't pushing it the entire time - I'd do 1 or 2 hot-laps then give it a bit of a cool down (whole track in 4th gear), then go again.

In comparison, the water temps will sometimes hit 95 degrees crawling in bump-to-bumper traffic for long periods on a hot day. It's usually around the 85c in normal daily operation

and yep, being a type-R it's got twin oil coolers.

I had a good look at the MR2s at the show n shine (I used own one) :P

Yeah that's mine. Plenty of RX7 owners seem to have history with MR2's. Must be something to do with them both being cars that regular enthusiasts are "scared" to own.

Yeah, no worries there's always next time. I saw some of the pics you posted on Facebook. I can't believe they let you into the RE Amemiya garage!

Yeha bro pretty much anyone could walk in after the event!! all i can say mr amemiya himself is the nicest guy...very humble!! He must have apologised like a million times when he had to decline me putting a Unit 7 sticker on the hurricane race car due to sponsorship issues but said he loved the sticker and wished the group all the best :)

Can't say I know too many RX7 owners that had an MR2 apart from DCUPS. Anyway, does that mean an RX7 will be your next car? :P

Been a while since I've updated this thread..

Anyway, had a bit of a meeting with a guard rail in the national park about 4-5 weeks ago. Was just being silly and ran out of talent on a fairly low speed corner, thankfully I wasn't going too fast so not too much damage:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A843o-dqQxA/UF1P8m273LI/AAAAAAAAAiI/MMJi2xPpRNo/s800/IMG_5024.JPG

Patched up for now:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-r5sgDULEUyc/UF1P_ukgDfI/AAAAAAAAAik/tdCLvJC2Mmw/s800/IMG_5041.JPG

I've picked up a replacement fender (in red) that I'm planning on prepping myself and then getting it sprayed.. will also be attempting to patch the damage to the fibre-glass front bar and getting that resprayed as well.

I got a bit sick of the lack of rear grip due to a pair of very worn rears. Fitted a set of AD08s on the weekend (they had to be ordered in a few days in advance).
Purchased from the Bob Jane T-Mart in Taren Point and I met the owner (also called Peter), and had a bit of a chat while getting them fitted on Saturday.

Very happy with the service (quick) and I got them at what I consider to be a bargain price! They gave me a free bucket of car care products, which I think they are currently giving away with every full set of tyres, or it might be their way of telling me that I need to wash the car. Also went for the nitrogen filling @ $7.50 extra per tyre. The AD08s are fantastic so far, lots of grip (I haven't even come close to the limits of grip), nice and quiet and not too harsh for the street.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lwRbOXLEsZA/UF1QAeq4IdI/AAAAAAAAAis/E_oajK6e3lI/s800/IMG_5054.JPG

will hopefully be seeing a bit more track time very soon :)

Thanks for the photo, Will :)

Not much has been happening with the car of late but I'll be doing a few things to it over the Christmas/New Years break.

Anyway, the low temp Mazdaspeed thermostat has been fitted and the front guards lipped. the 235 width AD08s I've got on the front are actually quite a bit wider than the previous set of tyres I was running so was scrubbing slightly when on full lock. Rear has been lowered by an inch as well.

I also took the car down to Wakefield Park on the 1st of Dec for the last circuit club track day of 2012. Very good day all up and improved my PB by 3.5 seconds (1:16.40).. there were soo many cars on track, it was hard to get a proper clean lap in the morning. I was getting a lot of oversteer during the morning sessions and span out a few times and took a bit of time experimenting with different damper settings + tyre pressures throughout the day. The new suspension and tyres felt great on track and a huge increase in grip. I'm sure a few more seconds can be easily shaved off with the current set up with a bit more track time.

It was getting fairly warm in the afternoon and the water temps were getting dangerously high. I don't have proper gauges yet so was keeping an eye on it on the hand controller..
The water temp hit 116c in one session while I was chasing an evo 6 around track for a few laps and not really paying attention to the temps, but I backed off immediately when I noticed and let the car cool down. I think I might have to invest a set of temp gauges and pod.

A few pics from the day:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WSFL2_7vRmo/UNOlCu_hROI/AAAAAAAAAlM/YAWtA0Isbd8/s800/8248825217_afe65c8b91.jpg

Next to a newly built clubman (REPTAR), which had a few cooling issues during the day:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-C43XtrKhRpk/UNOlCr1AC_I/AAAAAAAAAlI/3K24J_VQZz0/s800/IMG_20121201_141541.jpg
The passenger side blinker decided to pop out on the way down from Sydney. Luckily it didn't fall out and I managed to fix it with some duct tape!

I managed to pick up a second hand aftermarket SMIC for a pretty good price and I'm told it might be an early model Knightsports cooler. The core looks much bigger than the tiny stock SMIC but I'll rip it out and see how it all fits soon + get it retuned. I'll be shopping around for some sway-bars and maybe some underside bracing but I'm fairly happy with how it handles at the moment.

A very snug fit. Battery tray had to be modified and a smaller battery installed. The intercooler came with a duct that won't fit due to the Autoexe CAI.

I also topped up and bled the cooling system today after one of the hoses to the AST got a tiny split in it. Using an old water bottle worked quite well :)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0i6_gpXwoy0/UUmSebnxGaI/AAAAAAAAArs/Y_hFdfOigZg/s1068/image004.jpg

Also got a few more bits waiting to go on. I've been getting my parts from www.perfectrun.jp recently. Very good service and quick turn-around times. I find they're significantly cheaper than getting things through RHD and have been able to get all the parts I've been after (special order).

I also took my car to Ric Shaw Racing a few weeks ago to get a re-tune. Ric is the master of all things rotary. Ric found a few boost related issues with the sequentialization and diagnosed it was a problem with the solenoids (5 out of 7) and leading coil. He replaced them along with new leads and spark plugs. Not a particularly cheap service but I'm happy with the service and he was more than happy to show and explain things to me despite being pretty busy. It's making just under 200rwkw on Ric's dyno but the car has never felt as quick as it does now and gets very tail happy in the wet. :)

I've always preferred the look of the attain vented headlight cover over the FEED one as it's slightly more subtle. I'm not really expecting it to do much since the car is no longer running pods and has a CAI - I got it mostly coz I liked the looks of it. I'm hoping it'll maybe help lower engine bay temps a few degrees since the central scoop is used for the CAI.

so hard to resist getting more mods with the exchange rate so good at the moment. :|

Just a new set of brake pads (got another set of MX72s) and possibly some new rotors then I'm going to try and save money for the rebuild/conversion.

congrats. and yeah, fuel consumption is pretty stupid.

my tip for extending the km you get from a tank is to accelerate faster to get up to speed rather than build up speed slowly. they drink fuel under acceleration but aren't as bad at constant rpm so I try to minimise the amount of time accelerating. I'm not saying you should launch it at the lights everytime (necessarily).. :)

Thanks bud, I'll throw up a build thread one day. Mods have already started lol.

Yeah actually I noticed that already. Seems like petrol consumption when you pussy foot around is around 17-18l/100 and when I'm on highway and have lots of free open runs when I open up the car, I get more like 12-14l/100. Anyway, bought a daily so I don't even really pay attention anymore.

I love your wheel setup btw. That's my kind of offsets and sizes. I also want to fit 275s on the rear.

Kupo
22-08-13, 01:35 PM
the wheels are 18x8.5 front and 18x9.5 rear. +40 offset all round. not really the best offset for the FD and I'd go slightly lower if possible but I had the TE37s left over from my S15. I'm actually looking to sell them if you're interested and can't find anything else.

the tyres are AD08s in 235/40 and 265/35, which are a bit wider than your standard tyre so I had some scrubbing on the fronts when I first put them on and had to get the front guards lipped. the previous 235/40s I had on the front fit without a problem (Michelin Pilots).

elisss
22-08-13, 09:02 PM
I like the sizing a lot. Not a fan of stance or stretch at all. Id love to buy some wheels now but theres a few reliability things I wanr to take care of first. Radiator, ast, etc.

There's not much new happening with the car and she's still running well.

Got some SuperPro bushes installed (KIT130K) a few weeks ago as well as a new fuel filter, and just last night... the car turned 7!

thanks. sorry, I didn't see your thumbs up. it was pretty dark and I was kinda tired so my brain was in auto-pilot. I do remember your plates were 15-SIL or something like that. nice ride :)
