Hey Guys,

some of you may have seen in my intro thread (http://forum.jdmstyletuning.com/showthread.php?39676-new-member-sydney) that i was looking for an MX-5.

i've wanted one for a while now, and my want was only strengthened after test driving Chook's MX. i came very close to buying that car, but since i was after a daily i decided against it due to the ride height. besides, there's more fun in building it yourself right?

With the intention of daily driving and a slow build up i picked up this '89 model (plus i think it is pretty cool to drive a car that was made the year you were born):
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-GiwO6PGI_UY/TvQn8mvN0LI/AAAAAAAAAP0/lqISALktv_M/s640/IMG_1014.JPG

Paint is a dodgy home spray pearl white, i actually dont mind the colour and from far away it looks ok, but i have plans for a colour change eventually.

wheels are 14x8, and i believe they are Steffan RS knock offs since they look similar, but dont have the same studs on the inner lip (can any wheel gurus confirm/refute?)
as you can see they are pretty scuffed and have had a home paint job. short term i was thinking of cleaning them up and giving them a respray, but down the track i would love to put some SSR MKI's on it

already this week it has had a service, some new rear tyres and the air con fixed.

but i've also picked up some 3M Carbon Fibre Vinyl and have started playing around:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Nii5ENbK-58/TvQoGyHBl9I/AAAAAAAAAQM/LIXdSuY9sfE/s576/IMG_1017.JPG

the car came with some dodgy Taiwanese side mirrors that wouldn't stay in one spot and flopped around everywhere, but the previous owner also included the original mirrors. im in the process of giving them a little spruce up with the CF Vinyl:

first you have to disassemble the mirror and give them a very good clean. ive given mine a wet sand with a high grit wet and dry paper to make sure the surface is smooth, and then cleaned with alcohol to get rid of contaminants to make sure it sticks.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-QZbmhGsyNaU/TvQoVRdGnMI/AAAAAAAAAQk/TSsZ0RspQwU/s576/IMG_1020.JPG

this little cover sits over where the mirror screws to the carhttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CDj_XQFQFuw/TvQoeqsaBxI/AAAAAAAAAQs/VLauMyQVF4Q/s576/IMG_1021.JPG
it is a pretty complex shape and i found it really difficult, those youtube videos make it look so easy!

finished product

rough test fit, unfortunatly i had to use a join to make it work (total amateur!)

well thats it for now, but stay tuned as future planned mods include:
-supercharger
-lower ride height
-new wheels
-hardtop
-steering wheel
-some interior changes
-external colour change
+ more

Can't wait for the supercharger! Any idea which one you'll be getting and ECU?

still researching at this stage, but would love to find one of the kenne bell twin screw types, although from what i can see they are discontinued. forgot to mention in the future mods that i will most likely be putting in the 1.8L engine and a 6-speed box before supercharging.

yep it was the one on gumtree. looked at it/test drove it monday, paid for it tuesday, insurance and transferred wednesday and boom, new mx5. Previous owner was really nice, even brought it to my dad's workshop so we could have a really good look at it. Got it a bit cheaper than the ad as well. im really happy with it, super fun car to drive

Nice, congrats on your mx5!

Any particular reason for going supercharged?

If I wasn't already engineered with a supercharger I'd be looking at getting a little turbo to replace mine. I actually prefer the way turbo's deliver torque. Weird hey.

a few reasons. mostly just based on personal feelings/experience rather than logic and hard data. one of the first cars i remember as a kid was my mum's HSV senator that we supercharged, i fell in love with the supercharger whine and the super quick throttle response. plus i did a bit of work on SB Automotive's '68 mustang that is also supercharged. i guess i just have a soft spot for superchargers.

So today i left the house at 6.00am and headed to the Marulan Driver Training Centre.
It was the second time I've been there, but the first time in the MX-5.

Dispite a bad miss in the engine worsening i managed to do a 52.6 second lap, and was consistently in the low 53s. Not the best times but i'm pretty happy considering the SB Automotive R32 (RB20DET and Federal RSR Tyres) had a best time of 47.4. I am confident i could break the 50 mark with some better tyres.

I let everyone in the group i went with drive it and they were all impressed with the little car's ability.

now some pics (i realise that some of these cars are not JDM, but i'm sure many will still appreciate them, also it is not me driving, i was taking the crappy photos)

Just bought the car and already at the track, love it! :D

So i mentioned the car was missing a little bit in my last post, and i found the issue was a spark plug lead that wasn't connected properly, it must have gotten loose at the track. car is running like a champ now.

While i was at the workshop i decided to pull out the left headlight and paint the metal surround. The car didn't come with the plastic surround and the metal was white, and looked a bit funny. ill pick up some plastic surrounds when i see some but i figured it was a nice cheap fix. ill do the right hand one in the next few days hopefully.

here is a little comparison between the painted and the unpainted. i think the black looks much better

unpainted:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-2Ku56EeWSYI/Tv2XiNqhfzI/AAAAAAAAAbE/CgFlzt0lmN8/s640/DSCN0314.JPG

painted:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-z_Xk6WFrQZo/Tv2Xt9R5suI/AAAAAAAAAbQ/dFviLDj-MwA/s640/DSCN0315.JPG

also had a bit of an issue with the blinkers. Slight fuse meltdown.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aBmgi9H8g_o/Tv2WaHQYVKI/AAAAAAAAAZM/ULvUYfpsr_M/s640/DSCN0298.JPG

Not very good with electrical issues, so ill be getting my auto-electrician mate to have a look at it for me. Although if anyone knows where i can find a wiring diagram it would be really handy.

nemo: i hope to get it to the track alot more.

wow, it has been absolutely ages since i've done anything to this car.

been looking for halfcuts, hardtops and superchargers but havent found anything that tickles my fancy just yet.

after being at the Zen Garage Gallery event the other night i felt like doing a little something to the car, so i put on this wheel that we had laying around the shop tonight. super easy and fast job. would have been 5 minutes, but i spent lots of time fiddling with a quick release. decided against it because it brought the wheel closer than i liked.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-dJXLc7dEjJ8/T0H39SqJ9hI/AAAAAAAAAfg/uf_v24ETuH0/s627/wheel.jpg

smaller size than the one that came with it, and more grippy as well (other one was super slippery for some reason).

So after a bit of a career change im now back to having a steady income stream so i bought a little present for the mx-5.

KG Works turn signal intakes.

They were surprisingly difficult to fit, which is making me wonder if the car has a aftermarket or copy front bar or something. but hey i got them in and im happy with how they look for now. plus i havent really seen them on many (any?) aussie cars so hopefully it adds a bit of uniqueness.
