Its been a while since ive posted on here. I thought I'd share with my not so new project.

you might remember me from my old K20 EK civic - link for anyone whos interested!

The Long Winded Intro!

So yeah as the story goes, I sold the car earlier this year and as I mentioned in my previous build thread, my childhood hero cars were;

96 - 98 EK9 (civic type r)

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/JDMST/ek9.jpg

and the AP1 S2000

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/JDMST/800px-ap1s20001.jpg

So after having abit of a look around I managed to find a JDM Silverstone metallic AP1 with only 70,000 genuine kms on the clock.

like always I never take any time to take photos at the beginning lol, the day i brought her home ^^

Planning, Influences and Changes

What lead me to the s2000 was the amazing amount of RND that went into the car before production, the fact the car was built around the chassis and its very famous reputation as a extemely good and balanced track car. Which is very evident with alot of success in japan and through out the world. Plus I've always been a massive fan of minimalism and simple and clean cars and this car was right up my alley!

I also loved the fact that there was no chopping or changing of parts, no donar parts but a complete and extensive catalogs of parts specificly designed for the car!

Since I've liked the Ap1 for a while Ive had a few hero cars, most of which you prob all know

the ASM s2000

the J's Racing Togue Tuned s2000 (the ones featured on the hot version videos)

http://noriyaro.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/noriyaro_hot_version_gunsai_touge_oct_2009_014.jpg

J's racing endurance car ( came 2nd in their class in the 2009 Merdeka millennium 12 hours of sepang)

http://originalgaijin.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/dsc_2143_6001.jpg?w=510

the spoon s2000 (various models in differnt leagues and events)

http://seychellesmodifiedcars.net/groundzero/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Trackt-attack-spoon-s2000.jpg

also a couple aussie cars

Vvyets s2000, Elliots s2000, Fireballs s2000, 9Large's S2000 (all cars showing that u can look great and still be competative!)

More Planning & Mods!

Basically i decided that this car even if it costed me alot more money i was going to try to stick to japanese only mods and stay away as much as i can from US parts, one thing that bugged me about my ek

So after doing abit of reading and to be honest not much planning, i decided the first thing for my new car would be some new suspension and wheel and tyre and combo

Spoon N1 coilovers (F 14kg, R 12kg)

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/2011-11-24172516.jpg

Enkei RPF1 (17x9+45, 17x8+45) (Federal 595 RSR F225x45 R255x40)

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/2011-08-10193029-1.jpg

and that was it for now, i was quickly realising that the s2000 is ALOT more expensive then modifiying the civic haha!

Track TIME!

So i attended a Time Attack day help at QR, ran by a fellow by the name of Paul R.
I have to say it was an extremly well organised day and was alot of fun, I went out with a few mates from FFamily and few regulars on the forums

ended up with a 65.7 on the sprint track and a 68.4, initally i was mega disapointed with my times but i soon realised that it was my 1st time racing the car, 1st time using RWD, and the thing had less power and weighed more then the civic. Few pics from the day ^^

After some reading i decided to go with a Spoon N1 exhaust with Spoon Test Pipe
(holy crap the stock exhaust is heavy!) According to S2ki the Spoon is one of the lightest SS systems in the market.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/2011-09-13152721.jpg

VS!

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/2011-09-13155503.jpg

also picked up

front and rear Endless mx72 brake pads, my friend alex loved them on his eg so i was very keen to give them a try (pic is ffrom a 350z but u get the idea)

http://www.nissanraceshop.com/image/331115/315065/700/700/endless-brake-pads-mx72-front-and-rear-set-for-370z-sport-mx72-370z-set-sport.jpg

a spoon carbon kevlar air vent (basically just makes the most of the stock airbox and pumps air into it from the front bar)

http://www.jhpusa.com/store/pc/catalog/spoon/spoon.ap.airduct-stai2_d.jpg

pic from my front bar

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/P1100200.jpg

A 1390mm J's Racing Type 2 3D carbon GT wing (apparently the stock s2000 shape created lift from factory, from what ive read a Wing is an extremely effective and worthwhile mod for track s2000's)

got this bad boy off Elliot!

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/2011-10-06170953.jpg

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/2011-10-06170905.jpg

also a Bride Zetta 3 i had left over from the EK build :P

new wheels some Advan Racing RG's 17x7.5+48 17x8.5+50, they were gold but i got them powder coated @ Prime coatings in matt black to keep in theme with my current colour scheme

Leap of Faith!

So ive raced at QR a few times and was pretty comfortable with it, but lakeside was one track that scared the crap out of me, ne ways my friend alex invited me to attend a day there with the QLD BMW club

after getting taken around by a fellow named Simon on the day i felt alot more at ease and pb at the start of the day was a 68.XX and finished the day with a 65.0 so i was super stoked with that i was in the top 15 times of the day out of 40ish car. Also have the say i was so impressed with the RSR tyres, held up after a day @ QR and 6 sessions @ Lakeside, taking the kink @ ~190kms with no issues :] but i had no issues with grip at all!

few photos!

and one sketchy moment @ the bus stop

change of heart

So for w.e reason at the time i got completly over the car due to owing money for it and began parting it out, ended up selling the wing, the bride and a few other bits, prob a few people saw the car up forsale on a few forums

ne ways with a new job i was able to become debt free and decided to keep the car!

so a few steps backwards but at least i know what im in for, got abit of a differnt idea on how i want the car to look and in reguards to set up, its definately not going 2 be as fast paced as the EK build but i feel im gonna get alot more out of this as a driver and as an enthusiest!

thanks for viewing

Where Im Sitting Currently

so yeah since then ive just been looking at upgrading the front of the car, looking into front bars, lips etc, still deciding what id like to do

but i bought some very fancy lug nuts, cleaned my wheels, put a circuit hero neo chrome shifter extension, arc titan gear knob and abit of a clean ^^

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/P1100194.jpg

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/P1100201.jpg

i also bought a air pump delete kit which delete's heaps of crap u dont need and tidy's up the engine bay

this is what u end up deleting

http://gallery.gtmotoring.com/d/3336-6/DSCF5134.JPG

and replace it with this lol

http://gallery.gtmotoring.com/d/3078-6/S2k-airpump-kit-med.jpg

also cut off the large resonator off the air box, i noticed on the spoon catalog their s2000's pictured dont run them, so i figured id cut the fat so to speak
(dont mind the white pen, thats the parts im left to clean up)

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/P1100197.jpg

since i was there i also extended and re ran my tps, map to tuck a few more wires and also re ran a coolent line that goes into my throttle body, so yeah as a whole its abit cleaner compared to a stock engine bay

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/P1100198.jpg

as the car sits this arvo

Hahahha I've always wanted to own an s2000!

they are on my ef at the moment, they didnt really fit unfortunately due to the JDM bars so i was thinking about getting 90-EAD for this one and get it in the USA sizing so i know it will fit ^^

Obligations zzzzz

Woke up this morning and i really didnt feel like working on the car but i eventually got outside and started working on it

not a very exciting update but another 5,000kms was up for the engine oil and 10,000 kms for trans and diff oil

becuase for once i was organised I bought;

- Oem fully synthetic engine oil
- Oem transmission oil
- Oem diff oil
- Oem Filter
- Oem crush washer
- a hand pump from auto crap

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/P1100204.jpg

oh and something to keep my sane while working on the car :P tripple J blasting haha

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/chumdab/P1100205.jpg

didnt take very long, everything seemed nice and normal ^^ unforuntatly there wasnt much room behind the fill point for to get a rachet and i didnt have a big enough ring spanner (bigger then 19mm) the diff so ill have 2 do that another day.

couple questions (car never came with a service manual and all i could find was DIY's not actual information)

- how often is Trans and Diff oil to be changed?
- how often do i need 2 change my spark plugs? (currently 10,000kms old)

thanks!!!

kwatch

Not sure about diff oil but if youre using copper apark plugs 50,000km. If iridium platinum and all 100,000.

Change the diff oil after every couple of track days. S2 diffs can cook the oil. This leaves carbon deposits inside the Torsen centre and eventually leaves you with a not so affective LSD.

Ah, I was wondering what happened with your AP1 dreams dude! Saw a random parts-for-sale post in the FS section and didn't remember seeing a build thread.

Car looks great man. :D I like your approach to modifying this time round too. The S2K is a true drivers machine, and is definitely on my 'must own' list.

also another technical question

am i correct in saying these are Adj rear control arms?

these are the spoon ones

http://www.spoon.jp/_uploads/photo/items/00/0000/1129/1129_1.jpg

vs

ikeya formula

http://i625.photobucket.com/albums/tt336/mcopley/IMG_5180.jpg

what is more ideal? any sort of pros and cons between these two designs? i noticed the I/F have almost a extended area (right hand side of photo) is this to help with suspension geomatry? (like an extended balljoint?)

kinda vague questions but im just trying to gain some more insight to the parts i plan on replacing ^^

To me, they look like roll centre adjusters - it makes the car more neutral when you lower the car so it balances out when cornering hard.

how much camber do u want to run?
looking for full meaty or stretched tyres?
this will dictate what tyre sizes u can/want to run ! =)

17x8+30 17x9+35

idealy id like to run these as my track wheels so most for the rear would be ~ -3 degrees and the front i can prob run abit more

few people i know said i could prob get away with a 245 40 for the rear and 225 45 on the front

but one day id love 2 run 255 front and rear (i realise its prob not gonna happen with these wheels @ these specs)

Depending on your coilovers, with 17x9 +35 using 255/40 will be easy to fit without scrubbing issue by:
> -3 camber
> bumper tab relocation and a bit more trimming down the bumper where it outlines the wheel
> Rolled guards with a slight pull just to be safe (using the roller too)
> Low (low gives my camber :D )

All depending if your coilovers are stiff or not though, if they soft they will bounce alot and dominate your guards.

currently running ~ -3 im abit unsure about the fronts tho
ive done that but im gonna try moving it back further (any reference pics would me much appreciated)
ive got a roller im not sure how you would pull a guard with it tho (ill look up some diys)
with my current height i could prob go another 2-3" lower if needs be

245/40 would be a better choice i'd say on the rears since u got +35
but it wouldnt hurt to try and fit a 255 lol

will require rolled guards F&R
im not much of a track person so i dont know about any disadv/adv of the stagger of tyres
but ppl mostly go with a 215/45 F to suit with 245/40 R
and 225/45 F to suit 255/40 R

hope this helps! =)

MAD828
04-01-12, 08:07 PM
You will be faster on the track with a 215 front and 245 rear section tyre with those width wheels, also depends on your sway bar setup. I ran a 245 on 8.5 and then with the exact same tyre on a 10 ich wheel I was 2 secs per lap faster at EC.

9 inch wheel is 245 in width or close to, running a bit of stretch rather than a tyre to big of the rim is faster.

Non stagger is faster too but your wheels are not suitable obviously.

CE's are the best for the s2000

With 17x8 (F) and 17x9 (R), for track work I'd run 225 up front and 255 in the rear. You could probably even go as far as 245 up front, but there'd be a little sidewall flex on cornering so steering response might not feel as sharp. The best thing to do when judging tyre widths is to get a similar sized tyre width as rim width. This maximises the tyre's contact patch without compromising its sidewall integrity too much. The wider the rim compared to the tyre, the more likely you are to maximise its contact patch under heavy cornering.

Running staggered vs Non-staggered is all about balance and what your driving preferences are. Running a wider front means more front-end grip, so better turn-in and slightly better braking capacity. Proportionally increasing the rear can tame the rear-end (i.e. reduces oversteer), but it can also numb the turn-in response and even introduce understeer. It all depends what your preferences are and everyone is different. For street, I run 255F and 265R staggered, which I find is superior to the stock staggered setup.

thanks for the info mike ^^

im curious what have u done 2 your front guards to fit a 255? also what wheel specs are u running (something in the 9 i would imagine but interested in the offset mainly)

ive been doing alot of driving in the last 2 weeks and i really dont wanna sacrafice tyre width just to fit the ce's, been enjoying mountain driving and gives me the option of more track work this year ^^

so yeah if anyone is interested in the ce's lemme know

i also bought a cusco brake stopper but my lame alarm gets in the way so ill have 2 find a way around that zzzz

My front fenders have been pulled and flared out. My car also isn't that low - I've only dropped it about 1.5 inches. My current street specs are 17x9+35 (F) and 17x9.5+30 (R) with -3.0 deg camber on the front and -3.5 deg camber on the rear. Some guys run even wider up front - it just depends on your rim width, offset, and how much clearance you want (inside/suspension and outside/fender).

dlai
11-02-12, 09:22 PM
Gorilla Industries! Email Shane and he should give you a good quote. (I think he can the RS-R's, they are a Federal Dealer).

Although, I think Hankook RS-3's are probably the best performance tyre for cheap if you are willing to spend around $800?
Can get them cheap through tirerack.com
