Hi guys/gals,

Like my previous cars I thought it would be good to start a build thread for my current vehicle a 2005 Lotus Exige.

It was on the 'to do' list to create this thread over 10 months ago lol but have been busy....

As it stands I have currently owned the Exige for 12 months. Those that know me would probably be surprised that I have not sold it. Ownership of my previous cars have been around the 10 month mark. I guess my mind wanders off or I simply get bored. So the Exige is definitely a special car and will be something I will be holding onto for a little while longer 

So here it goes...

Over 12 months ago, I was tentatively looking for a Lotus Exige in Chrome Orange. The lotus market is quite limited here in Oz (only 8 currently for sale on Carsales) and to expect to find an Orange exige for sale I was willing to wait. My previous cars I was happy to settle for another option but not this one! I was going to do it right this time...
My acquisition of the Exige was an experience itself. Most forumers could probably relate to this but, I found my exige by one night just having a ‘browse’ on carsales. No luck there, and for some reason I hopped onto the Manhiem Fowles auction site. And there it was! Listed was a Chrome Orange Exige in an upcoming prestige auction. The lotus community is quite small here so after some digging around I managed to track down the owner of the vehicle. The car was exactly what I was looking for, had some decent modifications, Australian delivered, low kms etc. I thought, sweet I might be able to get a good deal on this one as anything can happen on auction night. But Timing was not on my side...

The night that the Exige was due to be auctioned was when I would be on a plane bound for Tokyo. The owner was reluctant to remove the car from auctions either as he thought the car would have attracted a premium price. So after some arm twisting and negotiating I placed a ‘conditional deposit’ on the car. With both parties agreeing on a reserve to be set, if the car failed to hit the reserve price then the car would be mine for an agreed price. It was the best option at the time as the owner could secure a much higher price for the car which I was not prepared to pay, whilst on the flipside of the coin if it failed to hit reserve then I would have acquired the exige for a good price.

Moving along to auction night, I was due to land in Tokyo 6.00PM local time whilst the auction was due 8.30AEST. The 30 min gap was agonising as I was anxious to find out how it all went at auctions. As soon as the plane hit the tarmac I was on the phone, the owner had some fantastic news! The car did not hit reserve! WINNING!
It was a good feeling at the time knowing upon my return from holidays that I would be greeted by a new toy!

Ownership Experience so far...

The Lotus is a unique car. Don’t expect any form of luxury at all. The way I see it, It’s pretty much a Road Legal Go Kart. It is a drivers car. The Exige was meant to be something enjoyed on the weekends but I easily rack up about 300kms on the thing weekly. Quite addictive to drive! Some of the guys on the Aussie Elise forum drive theirs daily. Insane!

After a week of owning the Exige I quickly realised that the car was not meant for everyone for the reasons;

-Getting in and old is not a task for the faint hearted or for anyone wearing short skirts :P

-The car feels like it will literally fall apart on rough roads i.e Parramatta Road

-Changing Lanes requires a 6th sense. The Exige has terrible blind spots and the rear view mirror is next to useless.

It is difficult to compare the Exige to my previous cars such as the M3, R34GTR, EVO 8. As it is quite different. There are no electronic aids, the interior is Spartan and in terms of aesthetics it looks quite alien. Overall the seating position is quite low to the ground, the steering column is fixed and if your taller than 180cm would be difficult to drive. Driving around town is just like any other car, changing lanes requires extra attention and parking is not too difficult except I get paranoid about other cars reversing into the car whilst parked as it is quite low and hardly visible in the rear view mirror of a normal car.

Apart from the cons there are many positives to the Exige. At the end of the day any car enthusiast would be willing to put up with a couple of rattles and compromised comfort to own and drive something they enjoy.

That’s it for now.

Purple is nice. But for such a small car you would want a bright color so people dont hit into you.

Awesome car, so this is the daily?

Nope.

Hahaha Ray, If I was to get another M it would be gunmetal. Are you still looking for one?

Take me for a spin John! I want to see how these are compared to the s2000. It took alot of mods to beat the exige in supersprints!

Out of all the cars I have owned, the S2000 is the most relevant to the Exige. In the sense both have very plain interiors, designed purely for driving. Both lack power IMO. Both require a fair bit of driver input to actually put down a decent time around the circuit.

GTR vs Exige? what are your opinions FLY?

2 VERY different cars. The GTR is almost every JDM fanboys dream car so expect to see more on the road as the R34 becomes cheaper. Also being older expect to spend money on regular maintaince and to replace/repair things that go wrong. On a good day when everything is running sweet the car is a dream to drive. Big and powerful is what comes to mind when I think of a GTR. It commands road presence through being bearish. A std GTR is boring to drive, parts are not exactly cheap as you wouldnt want to rock fake parts on a GTR. Only the best for Godzilla. Depending on your mods the GTR is quite livable on a daily basis, I took mine on a road trip to Melbourne and loved it!

The Exige on the other hand is purely a weekend car imo. If your after something more daily friendly then an Elise would be better. It has a rear window which you can actually see out of. Also has a soft top for those nice sunny afternoons etc. But back to the Exige. Depends on what you want to do, If you want to track more then it would be cheaper to put an exige on the track than a GTR. Once the track bug hits you and you want to go quicker in the Exige costs could add up quickly. Your options for going quick is either to SC or Honda K Swap. Both which will easily cost you more than $10k. I take mine to all over the place and park it most places. Your GF will either hate the car or love it. As I mentioned in my original post getting in and out of the car takes getting use to. Even though the car is equipped with A/C in the hot aussie summer it's shameful.

Both cars attract all sorts of attention from other road users. In the Lotus you get more people wanting to ask questions at the traffic lights. People always looking etc. It is not exactly a low key car haha. However, in terms of defects you wont have much to worry about as most of the time the police officer is more curious about the car and wanting to check it out then anything else.

Hope that answers some of your questions?

you wouldn't by any chance have taken this to those spreets wakefield days?

Took it out twice closer to the ending date of the coupons. Were you there? Hope I didnt get in the way? haha

Yeap Hardtop is available. I think used they go for about $2k-$4k?

nice car! where do you recommend is a good place to source parts anyone local? service and maintenance?

Depends on what parts your're after. I usually just hop onto lotustalk forums or SELOC. Even Ebay UK. If you dont like waiting for items to be shipped Simply Sports Cars in Artarmon usually have parts in stock. They are also the goto guys for servicing. But really, its quite easy to service the Lotus.

I have a batch of CF interior parts coming in if your interested. Replaces the shitty looking interior pieces.

Can you get easy access to service parts to do some of the work yourself?

Continuing on now...

One of the reasons of purchasing the Exige was to be able to track the car and simply have abit of fun.

With the Exige I thought I would have a different approach of modding and concentrate on improving my driving abilities before going and splashing out on mods without better understanding the current limitations of the car. As such the decision was to track the using street tyres. The tyre of choice being Dunlop Starspecs Z1.

The first trackday in the Exige was at the Circuit Club Twilight Event Eastern Creek. This was the first time I have actually been to EC. It was definately an interesting experience with the sun glaring in the eyes upon the approach to Turn 1 and the sweeping nature of the track. As the light dissapeared so did my confidence~! Going out the last session of the evening coming out of T1 entering T2 I couldnt see shit. The Std halogen lights on the Lotus were useless (resulted in HID upgrade). The session ended with an unfortunate prang around corporate hill.

Overall the Exige handled relatively well with the std suspension and dunlop tyres. The car definately needs more power for this type of track, however on the flip side of the coin once I become more familiar with the braking points and corners I could probably carry more speed through the corners keeping up with the larger HP cars. The brakes on the car felt abit weak especially coming into T2, but this will be address with either different pad and disc combo or the AP 4 pot upgrade.

I wasnt expecting to put down any good lap times, moreso just to experience driving around EC. Will definately do it again.

Update:

Well, not really an update but an addition to the build thread...

Did a couple of Wakefield days which were quite fun in the lotus.
This time round I decided to take a different approach and just used street tyres until I could no longer go any faster. The Dunlop Z1's are a fantastic tyre. Sourced from Tirerack for $730AUD landed, they are a fantastic bang for buck tyre.

My overall impression of the Exige around Wakefield is that in stock ish form on Street tyres the car tends to understeer. Furthermore, the brakes feel 'weak'. The car is currently equipped with Carbon Lorraine pads all round so they should have been more than sufficient. Might look into switching them out for Pagid pads....

Will be upgrading the standard bilsteins to Nitron One ways along with upgraded ARB. From reading other folks reviews there is quite a significant improvement.

http://www.elise-shop.com/images/large/NRSNTRE_LRG.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff25/FR280/IMG_6528.jpg

Blue tape, crucial for protecting the car from paint chips on track and the drive to and from the track. Unfortunately with the lotus its not a simple case of pulling off the 'bar' for a respray. The whole front clam would need to be resprayed.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff25/FR280/252897_192176797496962_188172574564051_438557_5755 401_n.jpg

Circuit club track day. I was a last minute entry.... Not too keen on racing in the wet and out of my comfort zone but it proved to be quite fun and taught me a few things. Wakefield can be a funny track, one side of the track could be wet and rainy whilst the other side try.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff25/FR280/5832514893_e726513e6f_b.jpg

Another CC track day. I was passenger in this picture, receiving some pointers on which lines to take etc. Wedged in between 2 golfs. Justin's Golf was quite fast and managed to reel the Exige in on the main straight...

Overall my best around Wakefield in the Exige on the Dunlops is a 1.12, was keen to go back and try to reach my goal of a 1.10 with the street tyres but that idea was cut short when my gearbox decided to call it quits (not on the track).

The innovative mount kit is a nice piece. Quality made. However, there were extensive waiting times for the kit (5 months). I think I mentioned this in an earlier post but for my particular situation I only ordered the mounts, Shifter Mech and Axles. Bits and pieces were sourced locally. A custom header solution incorporating the std K20 header will be used for now to provide baseline figures.

The 'Shifter Mechanism'. An advantage of this particular kit is that I was able to retain my std shifter cables and std shifter unit. With the 2zz gearbox reverse was the pull up type. The K series gbox reverse is far right then down. So I may have look into a new shifter down the line.

Driveshafts all assembled here locally. Using Lotus outer components and the Honda inner component to form up the K swap unit. However, we hit a snag as one of the axles was 20mm too long! rather than wait for an undertermined period of time for the replacement axle to show up we had the axle modified locally.

Purchased it from a guy on the lotustalk forum. You can also get them from ebay, however the difficult part is finding the correct key blade.

The std lotus interior is quite bland, Comprised of tacky looking plastic which gets dirty and scratches easily it was time to freshen up the interior with new CF pieces.

Ordered in these items which arrived last week.

Shifter Tunnel
Might not be able to use this piece as the old setup used a pull up type for reverse whilst the Honda gearbox Reverse is pull far right then down. The shifter tunnel will get in the way which makes putting the car into reverse a PITA.

any updates???

Have been busy and actually forgot about this thread....

The car has been back on the road since Feb.

Here are some pics from a shoot that was done at Zen Garage months ago....

Since the shoot...

Interior plastic pieces replaced with CF items. 300mm Sparco Suade Steering wheel added. I'll get some updated shots when I have some time.

Sweet ride.

Had one at the start of the year. Hated driving it tbh. Everyone sat next to you on the road making it impossible to change lanes. :(

Some tips my ex partner worked for Simply Sports Cars for a while.

Change to pro bax seats if u don't already have them.

The shift cables also stretch and if your running some power I suggest in changing them.

I remember this thing from a wakefield track day about a year and a half ago. From what I remember we were having a bit of a battle out on the track, I had a bright yellow 1st generation mazda rx7, it was the loud shouty thing that was there

Agree, if you dont mind people staring or coming up and taking pictures of the car then all good, but can understand as not too many lotus around.
I've been looking for Probax seats (the one with the harness holes) but they are quite rare and when they do pop up people are asking inflated prices. Cheaper to buy CF Tillet seats.

I know SSC are the goto guys for anthing Lotus related, but I prefer to get most of the work on my car done inhouse. Gives a much more initmate knowledge of the car and is much more rewarding.

And tbh SSC are a bunch of pommie ****s. Lol. One reason why he don't work there anymore.

But he actually knows ur car and has done work on it lol. Small world.

In house is better and easier for u since u are pretty much only running the exterior :)

Always curious to see how small it is on the inside as im 6'2. in saying that i managed to just fit into a cspuchino . . . took a little while getting out of it also lol.

Superb build thread i must say, very exotic and rare car indeed.
