so its been a while since ive updated i guess but hopefully this will show for it , had plans to do an engine conversion ,turbo etc for the mirage but it still didnt satisfy my want for fun , having a FWD for me felt like alot of restrictions for me and so the hate began! lol

i made sure my next car was RWD just so i could be as cool as every other kid that tries to do skids when it rains in there crummodore's *no offence* (becausehooningbogankents)

anyway back on topic , about 10 months ago i saw this beauty , just staring wishing how cool it would be to have one and just a few weeks ago the day finally came..

picked up the girlfriend and as we were driving i saw this :
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/839/img2736wv.jpg
then did this
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/336/asjimp01bt7.jpg

i couldnt believe it! $2000 , so so cheap! :D

and i knew then and there it was fate! (shudup i believe it happends for a reason x'D) so i made it my mission to get it as quickly as possible , and with christmas just around the corner it made it more of a challenge

so after working extremely hard for weeks and weeks , checking insurance , finding a place for her to stay making sure before hand everything was set!.
so one week i went over to the guys house and wasnt there (working night shifts makes it all more hard) then i tried again and still wasnt there but a couple hours later that day i manage to finally get hold of him

had a good chat , nice fellow just asking him about it (knew right away nothing was perfect) and actually expected it not to run at all! , so going over the car looking for anything suspicious as any car buyer does
hopped in and i was so amazed by the comfort , and dust >.>"
fit like a glove , everything was where i wanted it to be

Then it was the drive..... being on my p's cant drive turbo + being unregistered but that didnt stop us so we hoped in and away we went

picked up and went nice n quick (also surprised me becausemirage..)
then it went down to business
conversation as follows :
seller :" so how much you got?"
me :" hmm about $1300-$1400 , but im still workin hard to get it as quick as i can "
seller :'' do you want it? ;)"
me :" oh hell yeah i do , i mean yes haha"
seller :" well ill sell it to ya for $1300 ........ cause i want it off my [email protected]&kin lawn aswell hahaha"

so then we made a deal and then i picked her up last week
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/9416/img2731l.jpg
don't look at the chromies.. they will be punsihed WITH SMOKE!
http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/1617/img2738p.jpg
and then the depressing bit.. AUTONUBZ and also gay wheel
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/6528/img2746q.jpg
then found out its a k's model! :D
http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/2011/img2737k.jpg

just some random shots
http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/420/img2763oc.jpg
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/3347/img2769he.jpg
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/1333/img2732ip.jpg
only one side lights up , guess its stock? (correct me if im wrong)
http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/903/img2788xt.jpg
ca18det awesomeness!!
http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/122/img2779p.jpg
http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/7444/img2787p.jpg

needs a new dash
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/5193/img2789hb.jpg
yay for lights!
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/8065/img2794b.jpg
yay for writing i cant read!
http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/8523/img2798f.jpg
and hurray for boost and blitz bits
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/6411/img2801tg.jpg

So anyway , just mucking around with the car monday i did a few lil things

Tesing out the headlights , since this is my first car with projector lights i was curious
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/457/29615392.jpg
then the foggies and this happened! OH NOES
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/2236/35363305.jpg
headlight wise ill have to decide on what i want and go for it

when i first opened up the boot i was greated by this

A WILD SUBWOOFER BOX APPEARED!
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/6759/32266450.jpg
http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/7229/87442012.jpg
had a quick peak at the spare
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/4246/23952757.jpg
then also found this whatever the f&#k it is (if someone could tell me what it is i can put it in the right place just found it lyin there)
http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/6323/39030630.jpg

i started pulling everything out , i also found a bag with a few belts (timing belt etc) and coil packs , so dunno weather there shot or what but i plan on buying better ones anyway
the boot is now coming together , new carpet is a must!
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/5030/90499967.jpg

whilst pulling every out of the boot i also found a rear strut brace , win!
http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/8840/66620573.jpg

next off it was glass , cleaning of the writing for the for sale stuff so i managed to get one done before getting distracted by this

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/998/44082224.jpg
a small crack on the drivers side and also a chip , so new windscreen is on the list now (i like nice clean new glass anyway so i have an excuse)
then distracted by the window tint...... , the edges were coming off and it looks tacky as hell so i got one window finnish up and de tinted , but will be re done probably by myself because i wanna give it a shot
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/4558/79532113.jpg
that was during the process , i didnt end up getting a finised picture but yeah

picture of the exhaust , its quietish , till you have some fun ;D
http://img576.imageshack.us/img576/5971/66355423.jpg
picture of the roof , in call for RE SPRAY!
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/738/54612374.jpg

just going through the car and found the locknut , yeerrr
http://img807.imageshack.us/img807/1557/70064183.jpg

pics of the cluster
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/2363/62098328.jpg
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/9530/59097206y.jpg

yeah this is it so far , the left side has 4-5 dints made by im assuming a crowbar
a huge failed attempt at breaking into the car (so the guy i bought it off chucked in a free door)

plan so far with this other then a few skid days etc is to do:

get rid of gay chromies
manual conversion
new carpet

pretty much just replace everything until it looks near new
and the general wheels, coil etc

Congratz on the purchase and nice buy.... Look forward to seeing the changes/restoration you have planned for it.

Would you be changing it to an SR some point down the track?

LOL. You just bought your way to hell. Good luck and have fun fixing that.
Awesome car to muck around with. :)
Suggest you chuck an SR20de in there so you can drive it on ya p's. :p

ahah doesnt seem like you checked it out much when looking at it!!, anyway that price isnt too bad, considering it runs and all, should be a bit of fun too, but bye bye money :)

keen to see you learn though, and so many parts avaliable

Thanks RYD11R , hopefully all the work will be done myself (respray with real paint not rattle can like other previous stuff)
as for the engine , hoping to just convert the ca to a manual
down the track possibly but i havent really thought about it yet

yeah i probably did but i think itll be worth it , itll teach me a few things i know that for sure
but i dont mind about anything thats wrong with it , after all i still have a year left on my green p's so im taking that time to complete this car

i was kinda too excited about it to even look , but for the price it not really a concern for me
i have it now and thats all that matters to me plus i have plenty of time to work with it

Good pick up mate.

Very cheap for what it is. Very cheap for those KM's aswell! (unless odo has been swapped over).

4tune
29-12-11, 06:50 PM
Cheers tiksie, i couldnt believe it either
And for the price i thought it didnt run or something was majorly wrong

The guy said it was a new motor and gearbox , blew the other one up and had gone through 3 gearboxes :/
So im guessing it wasnt treated with much care since he apparently "wasnt into cars anymore" o______________o

Would have still been happy if it had a blown motor etc but i consider everything so far a bonus so win win

P.s been going through the "best examples of s13,s14,s15 thread" for ideas hahahaha

looks like a decent solid car, the writing says you have a turbo charged car so you need to change the oil every 5000km and it says the type of oil and stuff.

4tune
30-12-11, 01:42 AM
When i first saw it the "5000km" and oil type was there i assumed it was for that , thanks for confirming it Nebuchernezzer :)

Spending this whole weekend on it so there will be another huge photo drop soon :)

Nice pickup man, will be a cool project! :) Nice that it is a factory K's, and that the brakes match the DET.

Will follow your progress. At least you have time on your side eh!

doesnt matter
CA18DE/T and SR20DE all have the same small brakes. Just the SR20DET have the bigger ones.
Either way for 2-300 that it costs for s14/5 or r/z32 brakes Its worth the upgrade anyway

Though as its a turbo model you will atleast have a R200 LSD which if its in decent nick (should be for an auto) will hold up fine skidding and not open wheel for stockish power

The CA's are good fun till they pop, my old 180 lasted ages thrashing. But the one in my new s13 didnt last a week
Wind it up to 10 PSI or a lil more if you have a walbro/bosch fuel pump and they start to have a bit of get up.

The headlights look wierd because you have one CA double projector ()()[] and one SR tripple projector ()()() by the looks.

Oh, and just dont paint it matte black \\

Yeah im assuming (by some of the bumper damage that one of the headlights got trashed and he just chucked whatever he found on it

No matte black jobs here hahahahaha

UPDATE TIME (i guess lol)

well anyway as said above ^^
so this weekend i decided that since im saving up i cant really do much

out came the interior (well most of it , wanted have to have a drive round the property so left the drivers side alone)

http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/8761/thestrip.jpg

Taped up whatever wiring i found and labeled whatever it was linked to (makes life easier)

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/1989/tapedwiring.jpg

And Ta Da!!

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/6996/beforecarpet.jpg

and so removed most of the carpet

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/4615/img2848u.jpg

and ALOT of time later (obviously didnt have dry ice but i got most of it done)

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7811/afterbackseat.jpg

worked on the boot also , didnt look pretty ........... still doesnt look any better

before :

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/8007/beforeboot.jpg

after :

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/5686/afterboot.jpg

ended up with a crate full of it

http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/696/theshitthattookmehours.jpg

The bag i was talking about earlier
with iridium spark plugs , coilpacks and belts (not shown)

http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/2731/iridiumplugs.jpg

then tested the exhaust with my decibel app on my iphone...... (not the best or possibly accurate) LOL!

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/3204/decibels.jpg

and here are some random pics

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/7362/exhaustbh.jpg

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/1718/brakes.jpg

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/4782/lehighbeam.jpg

http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/705/img2862g.jpg

thats it so far , need to finish of the drivers side and then clean up the rest of it
also "de-winged" so will re route the 3rd brake light inside of the car
will upload photo's of that when more progress is made :)

shoukld have used dry ice, makes it soo much easier and worth the 40 as you dont have to clean as much glue residue off (thats the hardest part)
look int he last few pages on my thread to see how I did it

I know i wish i had some , dunno where to get it though :/
I did have a look at your thread last night actually haha

I found that using all purpose thinners or paint thinner work awesomely with getting the rest off after the sound deadning has been removed
Pretty much just brush on and wipe away with rags
Ill see if i can find any

Just a teenie tiny insy whinsy update

So today i went on down to the RTA to get the registration transferd into my name , only in my name nothing else because i told them that it wont be registered for another 6-12 months
and yes i took a picture anyway :/
BITCHES LUUURVE PICTURES
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/6547/photo2tb.jpg

so as im sitting there playing the waiting game and the jeopardy theme ticking away in my head as i waited i finally got called up

went to the desk

me: hi how are you?

lady: good thanks how are you?

me: im great thanks :) , i bought a car on the 22nd of december and i was just wondering if i could get it put into my name , only issue well probably not but im unsure is that it was previously registered in QLD , but its out of rego right now *not knowing what to expect*

lady: oh ok *goes to move away to get forms*

me: the only thing i wanna do is have it in my name so i dont have to keep thinking i have to do it and procrastinate about it
but im not registering it for probably 6-12 months while im restoring it

lady: yeap , well since it is out of rego and everything plus in another state you dont have to worry about it at all untill you go get the blue slip and ready for rego , so in mean time just keep all the forms a receipts and have them ready when your ready for registration

me: *:'D in my head* , oh awesome so i dont have to do anything at all yet?

lady: nope :) ill just staple this and you good to go , have a great day

result: WIN!

As long as you have all receipts/proof of purchase, unless you want to rego car now, you don't have to do anything...

Now im a real ebay junkie and i am ALWAYS on it looking for cheap parts or replacment parts ,wheels or photography equipment , lenses etc

so anyway , the radiator over flow bottle looks like ass must have sprayed it black and the heat got to it flaking it off , seen the gktech ones for sale but i found one better imo

eBay - aluminium radiator over flow bottle (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/S13-SILVIA-180SX-NISSAN-Aluminium-Radiator-over-flow-bottle-/290652203873?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43ac38ab61#ht_483wt_902)

Duuude thats sucks :/

The description said something like "sick of the old plastic ones cracking?"
So im like well if it says that then its probably only a matter of time anyway

The only seals would be welds (most likely) but if i do get ill take out the old one and see how much water they both take , hoping a bigger capapcity but who knows

Also if i eventually tub the front i could always modify it and get it re welded so thats an advantage , time will tell :)

Good pic up mate! It will be a very fun project and if your sensible it won't cost you a ridiculous amount to get her back into good shape. More than likely however, just like all of us once the bug bites you will go broke modifying the shit out of it or trying to keep it on the track, but it will still be fun :)

Definitely stick with the CA if you look after them they can last a long time and make enough power to do most things pretty well (I am biased though)

I have a ebay metal overflow bottle because my old one cracked seems ok quality and if your worried about the pigs just spray it with black crinkle paint so it looks plastic ;)

thanks dude , im planning on keepin the CA as i dont see the point in pulling out a motor that works fine
she is also running at 10psi so i'd like to see what it does at a dyno one day

Need info

Ok guys , being my first import and turbo there is ALOT that i have no clue about (but willing to learn)

now the guy i bought it off said he has gone through 2 engines and 3 gearboxes , back to the question

we took the in take piping (stock) off , well i actually can't remember why but we found some oil sitting in the main pipe some on the throttle body and not much near the intercooler , so my guess is that oil isnt supposed to be there clearly

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/8981/img2930da.jpg
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/4671/img2927r.jpg

now there is no smoke what so ever on idle or driving , except black smoke from running rich when hitting it hard , so my only answer is that it was from the old engine that they blew up OR turbo is on its way out

if someone could give me some sort of idea or what EXACTLY to check to see if its all good

poured turps and shaked ,cleaned and air blown all the piping and put it back in and tightened it all up , gave it another go and it hit 11psi 0_0"

cheers guys hope someone can help me out here it'll be appreciated :)

The oil is blow by, CA's are notourios for it and start spewing out more when there on there way out

Put a catch can in the breather then plumb it back into the stock drain in the intake.
That shouild stop most of it, if your filling up catch cans your motor is definalty on its last legs

i wouldn't worry about that tiny bit of oil dude i've never had a turbo car that didn't at least leave some kind of oil film in the pipes

Okay! so its been over a month now since the last update , thanks to certain things..

anyway my plan was to start saving for a set of wheels but something else came up
while i was bored i went through engine part on ebay the the CA

and to my surprise i saw an ecu for sale
checked it out and well (ill let the picture explain)

And here are the apparent specs :

(on the add): "Nissan Silvia 180SX S13 CA18DET Mines ECU
Tuned for factory injectors , AFM & turbos. Will work best with aftermarket

air filter, exhaust & premium fuel. This ecu has had both fuel and ignition

remapped and speed limiter removed. Rev limiter raised +500rpm,

Straight plug & play. Tuned / programmed by Mines Japan."

(from the seller): "depending on what mods , aftermarket exhaust , airfilter , premium fuel running 15psi boost can expect around 50-70hp increase, more noticeable will be mid range torque & response."

so plugging it in on the weekend and will show more progress then :)

be carfule with them

get the a/f ratios checked on a dyno when you put them in, as there actually a remap to suit the car they were put in

oh ok well thanks for the heads up , haven't driven it in over a month, or much at all but can always swap ecu's back of until first dyno run when ive registered it
putting it in later today basically to see how it works and go from there

Installed the mine's ecu
started to kick over but ran rich (erpderp)
so A/F ratio was wack like locky warned me bout

turned if off and tried starting it again and it wouldn't at all

so i took out the new ecu and plugged the old one back in (of course safety first dissconnecting the battery)
and thats when stuff started going weird (aherrderr)

kicked over with the original one and idle was a bit rough and hangin around by the look of it 400-500rpm (ruh roh raggy)
and then let the throttle off to see if it would keep itself going , eventually stalled

so now it was a matter of getting the car to idle properly , or normal
went through then engine bay , also checked the ecu plug
ended up finding a broken wire and 2 other worn ones on a plug , which i think it was an oxygen sensor

here it is

got out the soldering iron and fixed it up hoping it'll help out

then drove it up and down the street
then gave it a good boot full

pulled back into the driveway and was was running smooth as!
so thats great news!!

also chucked on the old steering wheel from the mirage
until i get a much better one

focusing now on a cheap set of wheels , just so i can get rid of these eyesore chromies
do hieght
get catchcan
replace water pump
get new carpet
5spd gearbox and everything to go with it
start sanding it down and prep for paint (not sure what colour probably just the original colour)

hmmm reminds me of my days when i had my first s-chassis. it was a ca18det auto 180. good times were had.
all i can say is, thank f**k the heater hoses look like they've been replaced.
manual conversion should be #1 priority!

Say goodbye to money, hello to street cred...

Just kidding, good pick up for the money but like just about every person that buys a cheap Jap sports car later on you will likely wish you had saved for a better one. Nonetheless, a good platform to start with as you haven't dropped too much $ on it.

Get an un-cracked dash as soon as you can. It works wonders for the interior.

Manual conversion also makes a huge difference. Auto S13s are horrible.

Lastly, this may sound a bit over the top, but listen to other people on the forum who have had experience with these cars (like Locky, best guy, etc) as there are HUGE pitfalls for the uninitiated. By this I mean it is super easy to spend money on parts you don't need, when obviously budget is a priority.

Good luck!

pretty much all the hoses were replaced by the previous owner
and there nylon (apparently) which is even better

i still have a year till i can legally drive this but its high on the list
im collecting parts for the conversion instead of starting it without all the parts so itll take some time

so far if probably spent about $350 on it lol but for getting it for only $1300 its no super amazingly 6902355kw beast

it'll be my fun/weekender for a lil while or unless i can't afford to have both cars but it's my keeper.

an un-cracked dash would be freaking awesome as this one has freakin heaps from sitting outside being neglected for months

i am listening to whatever advice is given on this thread and appreciate it
(with-out the occasional tard that'll will probably try nd shoot it down)
but thank you very much :)
got plenty of time and paitence

and also ordered some tyres finally

went around to all the local stores to see how much they would rip me off and wow , they would have to

cheapest i could get for the front in 235-45-17 was $119
cheapest i could get for the rear in 245-45-17 was $250 approx (even came up with a tyre for $1500 a tyre , i burst out laughing)

so did some searching and what not and got prices with tempe tyres , st george tyres and checked out ebay and seen what they had to offer

then i found these silica 235-45-17 Achilles ATR sports for just $75 each brand new from wheel tech!!!!

Those tyres will look like balloons and make fitting those wheels and having good fitment/not looking like aids impossible.

Should've gone 215/40 front and 235/40 rear for real steez
