Hey guys, new to JDMST forum. So, this is my HR31 coupe I purchased October 2011

-1987 HR31 GTSX
-130,000km on chassis
-RB25DET + 5 Speed 95,000km
-HICAS - gone, R33 rack, no rear lines like the HR31 rack, solid z31 bushes
-Tape stacker and audio controls in the centre console
-Adjustable suspension + all that other 80's rubbish
-R33 Steering rack - need to check whether this is centred or not as you have to re-weld new mounts for the r33 rack to sit centre in an R31. Might just put the HR31 rack back in and block off the hicas as its a pretty good rack, way better than an aus model

I got into these cars as my parents had an Aussie one for about 15 or so years. They're pretty much bullet proof apart from the parts that aren't made by Nissan.

I came across this one at a reasonable price and I couldn't help myself so I bought it. I'll put up a few pics of what it looks like, progress, parts I purchase for it etc. My daily might make small appearances.

The previous owner started to clean it up. How it was:

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/9800x600.jpg
Interior is actually in pretty good condition for the age, tape stack is there in there centre console. Pain in the ass to take out.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/3800x600.jpg
Boots clean, no rust.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/8800x600.jpg
Old NICS redtop rb20det, I doubt it would pull the skin off a banana. Anyway that ate shit, 3 Cylinders without compression, 15/24 Valves bent, Water pump seized.

RB20 out.

Seams Re-welded and bay sprayed

R33 Front cut - S2 RB25det and 5 speed. Motor and box went in and that's how the car sat for a while.

It was pretty dusty when I picked it up as it had been sitting in a yard for quite a while. Body needs a wash and motor need a bit of a scrub, but otherwise it should turn out alright. The car came with two big boxes on pallets full of parts so anything not currently on the car is in them.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/24092011106-1.jpg

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/24092011108-3.jpg

Gave it wash, still have to do the motor. I have a spare Ti front end, so I put the bonnet and a cover over the motor and wiring to keep the rain and leaves out.. not sure if I want to go Ti front end, or keep the original bonnet and gts grill on it. No rust under the guards, near wiper assembly/cowl or around the windscreen and rear glass. Drivers door needs a new window rubber seal, and has a small bit of door sag that you see with heavy coupe doors.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/24092011109-1.jpg
No rust under the front gaurds which is good.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/03102011125-1.jpg

Engine pic, a bit sad looking I know lol. I spoke to an auto electrician so ill be getting all electrics sorted out inside and engine hopefully within a week or two. R33 steering rack is in it, but I'm not sure how that will go with lock and sitting central, I'll have to check that out, otherwise I still have the HR31 rack and pump here.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/03102011120-1.jpg

A few pics of the interior and wiring headaches, trim and rear seats are still in good nick its like no one ever sat in them. The car didn't come with front seats or rails, but I seem to have found them in one of the parts boxes I have. Kinda sucks as I bought Bride rails from Japan which wasn't cheap.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/03102011123-1.jpg
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/03102011122-1.jpg

Bare interior, I'll put the dash and center console back in after all the wiring is sorted
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/03102011119-1.jpg

My old man and I started sorting through the two boxes of parts that come with the car. Kinda frustrating as theres nuts and bolts scattered everywhere that I have no idea where or what they could be for, also throughout the interior. Instead of putting them in plastic sandwich bags and labelled they were just left on the floor or thrown around. So I bought one of those 700 page nissan workshop manuals. Luckily it shows most of the car in blown up diagrams. Still doesn't say what sized bolts and screws for what. Ill have to pull my daily apart and see what goes where.

Just a quick update. These are things Ive bought, or had for a while waiting to go onto my sedan, but that's become my daily and everything else is going onto coupe.
Projectors and 5000k.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/02042011088-1.jpg

17x9.. rays ripoffs, they have some nice concave going on, although I might get rid of these go wider jap or get some wide SSR formulas
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/03102011126-1.jpg

Bought a Bosch 040, new filter and rice nuts
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/03102011133-1.jpg

Nice surprise when i came home from work, seat rails arrived. Shipping only took 3 days from Japan, so pretty happy.

Looking for a good pair of DC2R recaros for my rails
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/RECARO_3.jpg

Bought a new genuine aus radiator as the rb25 radiator is as thick as a slice of bread. Also got some hoses.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/24800x600.jpg

When you get rid of the HICAS, you put these bushes in so theres no movement in the subframe.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/25800x600.jpg

I thought I'd install my pump, in doing so I take the old one out, bottom of the tank has rusty deposits all over it from moisture getting in while the car was sitting. I cleaned it out, a handful of metal/sandy stuff came out of it and reddish brown water. Filled it up with cleaner and left it over night, then filled it with caustic soda and rinsed. All clean now.

should put the old red covers on the 25 if it's doable.

paint em up wrinkle red and then sand back the tops of the ribs so the metal is exposed

Yeah I was thinking of going that look myself. Not sure if the NICS covers will fit on the rb25 though. I think the eccs ones do. Ill have to check.

Yeah I was surprised myself, under the windscreen, boot, rear quarters and front quarters are clean. Must have lived away from the salt water and snow in Japan. Hopefully I can track down some 17" formulas or Watanabes

Anyone know where the current line Blitz ZZR coilovers are made? Japan or Taiwan? Also, what theyre like compared to BC's. They look similar side by side.

Nice ride bro.

Just a quick question. What style of bride rail is it. I have a recaro SR3 i want to put in to my r33... I am having a hard time finding a recaro rail If a bride rail fits then thats a problem solved.

Cheers for the compliments guys. I just love seeing the old 80s jap cars still going around, such a rare thing to see these days, even clean on commodores you never see anymore. Always puts a smile on my face.

Some days I look at it and think, shit I could have bought a 250kw rebuilt R32 or R33 for similar money, but oh well.. I wont regret it once I get it on the road and fit a high mount lol. Ill try post most of the things I do as a fair bit of the work is extensive. Someone else might benefit from the info, regardless nissan or not.

I've been keeping an eye on the price of those, been going up and up over the years especially the FJ Ironmasks. Some are going for $15-20g

Cheers man. I had a similar dilemma, no rails, no seats. Bride still make them for mine luckily. They make 4 types:

Two (FX and FO models) being for full/fixed bucket ,
The other two (RO and MO) are for -
RO - old Brix I, ergo, euro II line
MO - Brix II, Gias II, Ergo II, Cuga, Stradia II, these rails also have the same bolt pattern as Recaro SR3/DC2R/DC5R integra which is why I bought them, finding black integra recaros in good nick is the hard part.

That's where my research led me, check for yourself before you buy though. A few forums - silvia, honda and supra recommend the MO rails

Yeah the tekkaman/iron masks are worth a small fortune. Something like $2000 for the front end by itself. Those parts are so rare, especially the headlights.

I'm getting them powder coated black with the lines left bare steel, gonna throw them on the 25.

Small update:

Nice to see another HR getting some TLC. Ive had my 12/87 coupe since 1995 (first & only AUS owner!) & would not part with it for love nor money. It may take a few more years yet but these cars are steadily gaining in value if well maintained/restored and are such a rare sight. I still get a rush out of driving mine and always get admiring looks & comments from complete strangers. I'm running a 3037 which is a bit of a lag monster for a 20 (pulls like a train from 4000rpm to the 7200rpm limit) so bolt something similar to your 25 & it will be hard to wipe the smile of your face! Good luck with the build & I look forward to seeing more pics & updates.

Wow since 95. Must have cost a bit back then. I get good comments about my sedan, and all it has is rotas, suspension, tint and projectors. I've had about 6 people offer to buy it whenever I pull into a servo or workshop somewhere. I don't think they realise they can buy the aussie ones for the price of a case of beer on ebay sometimes.

Anyways, been caught up in real life shit lately and the weathers been ridiculous in western syd, so only a small update. I haven't had much time to sort out the car.

Gave my tank a spray with gloss black before I put the pump in and put it back into the car. Come up pretty good for a rattle can job. Started raining before I could put my last coat on.
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n610/JezR31/fueltanksprayed.jpg

I took the baffles out of the Redtop covers so I could take the breather fittings out.. They're fuvking tight. I'm going to see if the baffles are the same between the 20 and 25. I think the rb25 has Camshaft baffles on the last two lobes hence the lump at the rear of the 25 covers.. sooo not sure if they 20 ones will actually fit.

Good to see some more progress has been made Jeremy, great work. To answer your question, mine cost $26K back in '95. By todays standards I know that sounds excessive but around then a 32GTS was a big house deposit. After seeing it one day as I drove past the local import yard I simply had to have it. If you haven't already done so, get on to the R31 Skyline forum and check out some of the project cars, especially the Hardparked cars. I am sure there are many other 31 fans on there who would like to see/read about your progress. Hope the weather improves for you!

I know what you mean. I saw one a long time ago and I knew I had to buy one someday, little did I know mine would be such a headache lol. Yeah I'm on SAU and R31SC, there's some crazy builds in the hardparked section, rb26's, GTR sub frames, so much money spent. I have a build thread on there but I haven't updated lately. The money I want to spend on this will easily add up to a nice r33 gtr, but oh well.

Anyway, managed to get the blower, condensor and heater back in today, putting this car back together is a nightmare as the previous owner just unnecessarily pulled everything out and threw the screws everywhere. Makes it damn hard for me, I have to pull my daily apart to see what screws go where. The turbo lines, I'm missing banjo bolts, I mean wtf lol, why take them out.

A bit of dust has settled everywhere, I'll have to blow out the interior with an air compressor.

Bought two fittings from an old SAU group buy. Tried Pirtek and Enzed today, seems they don't stock speedflow fittings so I had to travel to Motorsport Connections in Seven Hills to get two 90 degree, -10 push on hose fittings.

did think the 20 covers would fit on a 26????

as for the nics redtops being shit. i beg to differ. ive put a rb26 crank in mine mad it 2294cc or a rb23 if u wanna get technical. and it gets abused alot. and theres nothing like a straight through exhaust out the side.:P

love ya build so fa though, keep it coming

as for speed flow ietsm, go to earls at silverwater. they the local distributor for the sydney area.

nice to see an original grey one, dont see to many. i was thinking as i looked through the first page, fark this car would look so mad with black rims, then BAM, there they were. hurry up n get those on there.

did you see that two tone black/red one on carsales a couple of months ago? had all the original gold stickers down the side and an FJ up front. looked awesome.

how farking hard is it to buy a box of 200 glad wrap bags, and everytime you pull some bolts off, throw them in a bag with a label? hate when retards dont do it. good luck.

I was thinking a nice dark colour off a euro model, shouldnt look too over the top. Or, R32 Gunmetal, or R33 GTR midnight purple.

Ahh you're probably thinking of an FJ20 DR30 coupe. I know I think the same thing about the glad bags every time I work on it. As for the wheels, they're on my daily atm. Looking for some older deep dish work VS-MX, should suit it well I think.

Anyways, I'm on the hunt for Blue or Black/red stitch Recaros if anyone knows of any for sale. Also want to buy a carbon R32 N1 style boot lip.

Sup guys,

Been a long time since I've updated this thread. Sometimes real life just sucks and unfortunately I had to postpone any more progress until recently. It's sat hardparked for a good 1.5 years at a guess. This August until now I've been buying parts for it again.

So... Original plan was: tidy her up, get it going with a front mount+exhaust+bit more boost for an easy 200rwkw.

Well it's 2014 and it seems 300rwkw is the new 200kw, and since I've been so slack with this car and I probably could have bought a nice R32 GTR for the same money + would destroy this in the handling department. I've decided fuckit.. I'll go for as close to R35 GTR power as I can.

I started lurking in the SAU for sale section and a lot of people are going E85, so they get rid of their old fuel system for bigger ethanol capable ones.

I got a Z32 AFM for a little over $100 so I jumped on that

Greddy copy plenum + stock throttle body adaptor. I've read the larger size'd TB's make it harder to control throttle so I'm sticking with the stock one which wont be a restriction at that power level.

A larger TB will more than likely hurt your power figure than help it.

Yeah, that's why I decided not to use a larger one.

Been looking for a turbo that would be big enough for 350kw. I had my mind on a kinugawa T67-25G 10cm, and found what was said to be one on DriftSales on FB. The shit thing about driftsales is some people have zero clue about what it is they're selling. So I bought this thinking what was a T67-25G 10cm, was actually a TD06SL2 (Same turbine, smaller 20G compressor) and 8cm rear housing. This would be maxed out at a very responsive 280rwkw on an RB25. It would have been a great upgrade for an SR20 or RB20.

So I sold that and got some cash back. Lesson learnt, I've ordered a new Hypergear ATR43SLSS3. Billet comp wheel and it's sized in between a Garrett GT3076 and GT3582. Good for 400rwkw on E85

Also bought some smaller items, OS Giken cam gear for the exhaust side and some braided brake lines. 52mm ShadowPro gauges - Oil pressure/oil temp/water temp/boost. Everyday is like christmas.

I'll install them something similar to this:

This is my favourite part to come in the mail so far. It arrived this morning after I had waited 6 weeks for it to be made. It's a Rex Kelway highmount manifold, made from steampipe. I give it a 10/10 for quality. Just need to buy a wastegate now.

When you mount your plenum, i would flow test the injectors and find out in which order they flow from the richest to the leanest.

Placing the richest in cylinder 6 and the leanest in cylinder 1 as the Greaddy manifolds have a design flaw that leans out cylinders 5 & 6 due to their shape.

My injectors have all been flow tested and cleaned, pintel caps, o-rings have been replaced. Seems they all flow equal on paper so hopefully the tuner will be able to richen up the back cylinders.

It's this reason I didn't really want to buy the greddy design, you also lose a lot of midrange torque because of the short runners. I wanted a Plazmaman plenum keeping the bottom runners to help bring a larger sized turbo on boost quicker but funds didn't really allow.

I don't think plenum design is entirely to blame. Once something is pressurised, pressure reaches a state of equilibrium doesn't it?

Cylinder is 6 is furthest away from the water pump, so water temps must be higher. 6 is also furthest away from the fuel regulator. At a guess though, I'd say these play less of a role in the lean 6 problem.

So to fix the problem you would tune cylinder 6 to equal EGT as the other 5 cylinders?

Wow, what a thread resurrection, nothing for a couple of years and then BAM!

Plenty of part hording and an awesome sounding build plan! Looking forward to progress.

Also have a pair these on order, should arrive late October. Pic is just off google btw.

Can anyone recommend a good boost controller? Was thinking of buying a Turbosmart Eboost Street after reading good reviews. Toss up between the Eboost or a HKS EVC 5 if I can find one in good condition.

(They are fairly similar the only way to get real tuned length is to remove all the brake and clutch master but for an rb25 the plenum will still end up in the tower, you can fill the intake ports in to compensate but it depends how far you want to go.

The issue with standard bottom runners that many people try to use for ease of fabrication is that they are on a big bow and the long curve dramatically slows down your air speed so i don't think the difference will be any different from the Greaddy style runner, you can even put a small rear housing on the turbo to help bring it on boost better, i run a 35/40 with .63 for this very reason even with a tuned length manifold.)

(It is the hottest cylinder in the engine and the furthest from the air intake to it will receive the least amount of air compared to the front 5 this is also why the shape of the Greaddy manifolds get into trouble.)

(Leaning out will be the biggest concern)
