Bought in 2005 from a dealer for way to much I have loved it ever since.
I have always dreamed of getting a WRC inspired vehicle. WRX's are way
to common, and EVOs were out of my league. When I saw this car in the
dealer ship with the rally Oz Racing rims It won me over.

I have been through the typical fix up things over the last two years and I'm
no starting feel that I am making progress. I plan to tread that fine fine line
between "rice" and JDM styling as my car is a JDM model and it will never
be a group A.

With any luck, in the end I'll have a daily driver that I can compete in
supersprints, hill climbs and tarmac 'rally' style events such as the Dutton
rally.

Please enjoy and please chip in with any suggestions.

Thank you for all the comments :)

Another GT4 reliability story though :) damn 17yr old cars :)

Was driving down the coast for a 2 day perk last thursday with work from Sydney to Geringgong. Had half a tank of fuel so I thought I would just fill up in Albion Park at the BP there.

Had a perfect trip down, ran the high boost through the hills outside Wollongong and had a heap of fun. Pulled in to get petrol and as soon as I turned the car off, PUSSSHHHHHHHHH. Steam was coming out of the bonnet and from under the car, and my car decided to urinate all it's coolant into the service stations sewers. Bugger. Filled it up with petrol amd then popped the bonnet. couldn't see any water hoses lose or splits, it was coming from between the bock and the firewall.

Luckily there is a mechanic at the back of the servo, so they got some apprentices to push it into the garage and they found the leak, I think it was the intake manifold bypass line. tucked way down the bottom and behind everything.

A few hours and $300 bucks later all fixed and cleaned. I only changed all the coolant on the Sunday before so this must have triggered something. Only bonus out of this is that the water system got a well needed, proper flush, clean and pressure check and I have some more faith in the cooling system again..

Cheers

hehe you should :)

Evan - If i remember right you had a group A before you got the drive with the lotus cup?

I'm really happy with the car now. it feels rock solid and the handling is really tight :) Will see how it goes on the track this friday at wakefield :)

how'd you go about installing the water to air intercooler? what other alterations do you need to make? i.e. extra water pump etc?

oh, and do you know of any good places to get spares for a jdm gt4?

The WTA isn't a big deal to fit however I got mine from someone who already had it fitted.

The main thing is you need to find another solution for the reinforcement for the front bar. I have currently got the JDM one removed to allow the heat exchanger to fit and I'm planning to buy the group A one which allows much more room. (I plan to keep the normal bumper on the outside, not the groupA)

as for parts www.toymods.net is good for other GT4 owners in Aust and like any toyota repco has most of them.

Well I survived my first track day at Wakefield Park and had a lot of fun learning the limits of the car :) There was also some very heavy rain in the last session was surreal to drive at speed in. Doing 140-150 down the straight with limited visibility, then braking into turn 1 was a new experience and was less scary once I softened the suspension up. Also being able to give it to a 2007 WRX in the dry was a nice feeling as well.

I learned a lot from a from watching a more experienced person drive my car, and it shows that I need a lot more track time, but I'm happy to do that.

It turns out there was a casualty from the track day. The infamous HFH hose split on me. It is under the exhaust manifold, behind the turbo. There is basically no access unless the dump pipe comes off. So this weekend I started on the process of removing everything to access this stupid 2 inch hose.

As a bonus since the dump pipe has to come off it seems like a perfect opertunity to fit a 3 inch dump pipe and which also removes one of the cats that is installed in the dump pipe. I have decided to go with the N*Power one from Ebay and from everybody's advice I'm fitting the KO Racing support bracket as well.

I wish :) I'll definatly try make the next one.

I got the car back on the road the night before ToyotaFest's Show 'n' Shine on 30th of september. It also gained the 3inch dump pipe and I will complete the 3 inch exhaust right though as soon as I can. The turbo is spooling much quicker now and I will be interested to see what power difference the exhaust has made.

Other than that the car scrubbed up rather well with only a quick clean for the day. Here are some pics. Unfortunately my camera died so I am relying on other peoples photos., as you can tell it was really sunny :)

Thanks for the feedback guys. unfortunatly today a guy I know at work backed into the front of the car and scuffed up the front bumper quite badly :( not sure what I'm going to do.

rotary_rocket: The St205, the newer black one is a GT4. except it is a JDM version. the 70 they sold in Aust all came full rally spec with anti lag and water injection except they disabled it. the JDM ones were minus a few of these features.

^^ for 70k + new retail price id rather leather over recaro.

with the new dump pump going in, let me know how your boost controll works.. many 3SGTE owners ive come across find spiking or unstable boost.

Yeah It is a problem, although I feel it is better than the stock dump pipe. I had a manaul bleed valve fitted and increased the boost with the stock dump pipe. I didn't have uncontrolable boost except it would climb all the way thought the revs.

I havn't had it on a dyno yeet but the Dump has increased the boost but I'm not sure it has made the creep any worse. I have heard it discussed more else where and it seems to be a fature of the dump pipe design arround the wastegate. although there isn't too much you can do uless you want to block access to the oil filter.

thats too bad man. is he going to pay for it?

Hopefully I can work something out. He did it in a work vehcihle so worst comes to worst he can calim it against the work vehicle insurance.

Awesome stuff mate, have always loved GT4's :D

I have a question though, is it just me or does your GT4 seem to have the standard Celica body compared to say the blue ST185 that is in some of your pics which should have a slightly wider body? I do vaguely remember ST185's having bulging front and rear guards.

Well spotted :) You are right, Mine is a JDM version that they sold in a narrow body setup. The blue on in the pics is Australian delivered and it has the wider guards, the same as the group A spec Gt4's

I used to loose sleep over buying the JDM because it didn't quite have the same fat look to it but I now like mine all the same :)

It was also great to meet up with everybody again at nationals, talk cars and enjoy driving them as well.

I was luck enough to pick up AWD runner in the motorkhana. I was humbly beaten by a Rav4 driven by a guy who knew how to make it turn on a dime and wring it's neck. I have the videos to prove it :).

And also have some sweet pics from the river thanks to Stitt at toymods.

Pics from WSID last night, my best run was 15.688 @ 82.59mph with 2.125 60' time.

I need to get that 60ft time sub 2 seconds and then work out why my car seems to be topping out at 140kph. I hit 100kph at half track and only build another 40kph through the last half. hmm

A update on my car,

A healthy tax return allowed me to upgrade a wolf V4 I bought cheaply to a v500 model. I took it down to the guys in tunehouse in marickville and they did all the hard work. The plug in loom from wolf didn't quite match my JDM loom but apparently it was only a matter of swapping a few pins.

So with a tune and using the wolf for the boost control the 151kws result is more than expected considering the previous 137kws @13psi.

Just when I was getting comfortable with the way it drove, i'm back to being scared of its power delivery, and without the AFM all the new intake noices make the car sound much meaner :) Still seems to drive well on part throttle and the cold start seems okay as well. Time will tell.

They are around the 1400kg which isn't light, and with the stock 100kw at the wheels they can't compete with the lighter WRX's and lancers.

Hopefully I will get it up to around 200kws at the wheels and it should make things more interesting then :)

Finally started to look seriously at the V500 install in my car last night and I'm not too impressed.

Basically the guy that installed my wolf has directed it to control the TVIS via an output that isn't wired as part of the GT4 plug in loom instead of just un programming it. seems bit of a dumb way to do it to me. Whether intentionally or not I guess this is okay because it is open but still, Is the ECU is able to control it why not use it?

Also 2 of their connections fell apart when I started to look at it. One soldered joint snapped because it was doggily done and another was crimped but the crimp was only holding one strand. maybe I'm used to looking at electrical switchboards at work but to me this just seems crap.

I'm really regretting not installing this ECU myself I should have trusted my own abilities and it would have save a heap of $$.

Another note the plug in looms are great if you want to only use the wires they provide. but if you want to do something a little different they don't even provide the fittings or pins for the wires that aren't used. Stupid. things like shift lights and other auxiliary inputs/outputs.

The better way to do it would be to buy the full loom and separate ECU plugs that Wolf are selling and make up your own loom. This way you can then add all the extra functions when you want to.

It has been a while since I have been one here and It is a pleasant surprise to get the great feed back :)

Since then I have replaced a BHG and the car is now working better than ever. Looking for a new tune with the new exhaust and larger turbo and all should be sweet :)

A nice pic taken by Fonzy at toyota Fest this year

looks great dude, where did you get the front lip? Wanna buy one for my car.

Do the Teins work well, im looking for coilovers atm and the only big brand coilovers you can get for it is the Tein SS. You can get the cheaper Ksport D2 etc but there are no good reviews for them.

Oh and great choice with the superleggeras, stayin tru to its rally roots. Pretty hard to find oz racing rims in aus

Front lip I made myself, I had some other ones on there but for daily round town duties but they were scraping on everything.

I was inspired by the WRC rally cars and the old Nascars and came up with this one. It is a rubber stip from clark rubber, sandwiched in between 2 aluminium strips. One of the strips is actually a aluminium angle that I have cut to bend it round the corners and then used the other part of the angle to screw it into the bumper. Sounds abit agricultural but it works well and I like it :)

Nice 185 im sooo jealous....I only own a 184 :(
I see its not the wide body type, the subtle bulge makes it look so agressive!

Very nice car though!!

Possibly not the best place to take photos with the shadows but I think you get the idea. (excuse the tape providing support while everything sets)

Also finished of a new fuel cap cover. No point having a TRD fuel cap without showing it off ;)

Thanks to the help of my brother and his fabrication skills, the Varex exhaust is fitted.

Fits nicely

The custom bend on the intake to line up with the old exhaust

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee226/OnAll-FOUR/Upgrades/Varex%20Exhaust/P1030582_zpsb4d49b37.jpg

The fit is a little tight up top as we thought it might drop a little more than it did. Will see how it goes, it might need a little tweaking.
