OK guys, here she is. Just picked her up today. A 1999 Silverstone, unmodified, new clutch fitted by Honda, 50,000kms (quite low really), no accident history, full log books. Very thoroughly checked by Dedy at Top One in Arncliffe (the most hardcore vehicle check I've ever seen!). Apart from a few dings and interior which could do with a bit of love, it's fantastic! I've already gone sideways in it (lol), really should not have stepped out at 50km/hr but it did so I assume an alignment is needed.

Anyways, onto the pics:

Also just wondering why you chose to pick Silver?

Levos1
26-07-07, 10:38 PM
Yeah i agree with Hebe? Silver isnt very JDM?

Justin Fox
26-07-07, 11:14 PM
LOL guys. Funnily enough I am going for a street look this time, thus the silver. Amazing huh?! I've decided not to be race inspired for a change so this car will NOT be stripped (I say that now but at this moment I really mean it).

Just driving it today has been a blast. It's got HID too! Amazing lights at nightm best I've had on any car to date. It's obviously got a lot more power than the Jazz, and at the same time it's not as easy to drive as the Jazz too. I can chuck the Jazz into any corner and not brake (thus scrub off some speed) this thing went sideways in a 50km/hr sweeper!!! It commands a lot more respect and feels a LOT tighter than an MX-5.

In an MX-5 I was happy to just let her rip and slide but I think it's going to take a while for me to get to that level with this car. I will of-course be taking her to a track to get to know her dynamics a bit better ASAP. I suppose the next Circuit Club track day is a good start.

Car needs an alignment and I'll perform a massive service on her on Monday (something I always do when I buy a car, replace ALL FLUIDS). I'll take it from there.

I know it sounds like a broken record comment in this thread but I can't wait to see what you do to it. You seem to have the power to modify tastefully.

Enjoy!

Justin Fox
26-07-07, 11:45 PM
Wasn't cheap peeps. I have been known for paying more for low km's examples. This car cost me $34k. Yup, a lot for a 99... but damn low km's and better yet it's soooo clean, the thorough check says it's never been resprayed at all, no accident damage. I'm happy.

Justin Fox
26-07-07, 11:47 PM
PS: Thanks for all the comments guys. I'm looking forward to getting to know the car first. You all know I didn't modify the EVO... the car just felt so complete straight out of the box. All I did was add some plates (nice plates at that though I thought!). In many ways I feel the S2K's similar, in that it's great out of the box. I know a healthy dump, wheels, tyres, hard top and more goodies are expected... but unlike the Jazz... I'm in no rush. Anyways, looking forward to keeping a car diary on this one. It's gonna be fun :)

Nice choice of new ride Justin.

Pity the number plates that came with the car isn't as funny as the Jazz (ANAS YO!)

Got a custom number plate lined up? :D

Justin Fox
26-07-07, 11:58 PM
I've usually got GREAT luck with plates but AP1 is taken. Bummer.

On another note. The steering wheel is non-adjustable?!?! Nuts!!! I find it a bit low for my liking... imagine a tall person driving it, would be even worse. All good though, something I will get used to I am sure.

34k isnt bad for the kms and condition of the car.

The good ones seem to be going for around that price. Whilst the ones for around the 30k mark all have over 100k kms or something dodgy.

Buddy club N+ coilovers are in (last night). Fitted by Dedy at Top One and alignment done by Doug at Heasmans:

FRONT
-Camber: 1.5 (neg)
-Caster: MAX
-Toe In (Total): 1/32 inches

REAR
-Camber: 2.25 (neg)
-Toe In (Total): 1/4 inches

Car feels amazing! Even on the shitty tyres, much more chuckable into the corners now. It's very low so I'm scraping on everything but that's AOK by me.

Also got a 50,000km service done and replace orange blinker bulbs in headlights with Phillips silvervision ones for a cleaner look.

Too right Stan. I can't even begin to compare the 2. The MX-5's chassis feels sooo sloppy in comparison, which in turn makes the car so much more fun and controllable I think. This thing's so sharp, I'm finding it a little scary in comparison to the MX-5.

Nah guys I reckon it looks damn stupid so low on stock wheels. OK this time I've gone for just under a 1 finger gap from and rear and too right the car (chassis) seems to be lower at the front than the rear. I'd have to tuck the rear wheels under to get the chassis balanced, might just do.

New wheels aren't even on order yet as I'm flat out broke from buying this car (it was more than the Jazz). I have a few ideas in mind for the wheels though. We'll see.

If you look at the original pics, they suggest that there is a bigger gap in the rear than the front. IE: the front is meant to sit lower.

Many tuners have the S2K set up this way, but others have the rear tucking under the guard too.

One thing about you Justin, is that you modify your cars with unique and incredible taste. Most of your cars have an aura, and even after you sell them people still refer to that certain car as 'Justin Fox's old car'. s2000 has copped a flogging from the press here in aus, i know of race car drivers who described it as the worst handling car made in the last 10 years...

thats probly a little extreme in my eyes:)

Justin Fox
05-08-07, 01:29 AM
Took it to Eastern Creek today (Circuit Club day). My S2K was crap. Turns out my tyres are Falken Zeix or some shit, everyone seems to know more about them than I do but apparently they:

A) Are the shittiest Falkens in the entire range
B) Do not wear out (lol)
C) Used on Taxis...

OK, so the previous lady owner skimmed out and got the cheapest shit tyres she could find and I was made aware of this as I did a high speed spin off on full throttle acceleration on my 2nd lap of the first session!!! SNAP IT WENT!!!

I now have a bins worth of dust and grass in my car, nice one (yes I like to drive with my window open!).

I was going to simply go home and have a cry but instead I decided to stay and learn how to drive the car with these fucked tyres. I softened the rear dampers all the way and progressively got better and better at catching the tail all day as well as building speed and overall just learning how to drive smoother which was pretty good training for me. It's a strange car, can't just chuck it around, not malliable like the MX-5, which never bites... this thing definitely bites and you've got to catch that oversteer really damn quick.

I found that doesn't mind to let you mash the pedal whilst drifting it at a tiny angle, but let the tail come way out and you have to (obviously) full counter steer but it
s very hard with the fat/shaped steering wheel, maybe a Nardi would help... and also when I did get that much angle I just had to let off the accelerator and save the car from spinning, whereas in the MX-5 I'd let it get that out of shape and just keep the accelerator mashed down and just start drifting. Very different, wants to be driven really smooth, especially at the apex and when changing directions/weight shifting (say for example the end of turn 2 into turn 3 at EC).

All in all I think it's got potential, amazing pedal placement for track work and redline heel toe downshifts are such a buzz. Shifter is spot on and plenty of torque in 3rd.

A great set of tyres will do wonders!!!

Cappuccino
05-08-07, 09:42 AM
Justin i know how u feel with the tyres.... i have them on the cappuccino in the wet tends to just snap at especially at low speeds and around round abouts. I also find that the car feels little unpredictable with the tyres.

Juz you might wanna consider the hard Mugen rear control arm bushes.

I've always liked the S2000 but I do agree that it's quite snappy on the limit, and I reckon it feels like there is a lot of toe control in the rear suspension. Basically the rear suspension toes-in with lateral G to give stability. That's why at 9.9 tenths it feels very planted, then ....zap!

It also means that when the car is sideways the rear toe might be inconsistent as the rear suspension loads and unloads adn you get on and off the throttle. The harder coilovers you put on might actually make it a bit worse, in the sense that the G-loadings are more sudden.

So I reckon if you put in the Mugen hard you would make the rear geometry more consistent.

Check out www.kingmotorsports.com they're not expensive.

Signalvzla: Of-course I did my research. Injen prides themselves on their gains on the dyno. I've read about exhausts losing power on an S2K, even the HKS would you believe. Here are the gains of the Injen done by an independent test:

Stock Box Max HP 205.8 TQ 131.7
INJEN Max HP 211.2 TQ 141.9

It's a hell of a lot louder in VTEC. Also it makes a "woooooooo" sound at idle and there's the famous Honda intake whistle at a certain rpm, albeit very faint.

I considered a Mugen intake, but you have to modify the bonnet to fit it (ridiculous really) and, as with all Mugen intakes... I couldn't find a definitive dyno result on it.

yeah, is unbelievable how tricky is to get power with aftermarket parts out of that engine. although is not the first time i've heard of an hks item not providing the expected results, also been informed that the uppipe for the wrx made by hks is not that big of an improvement in comparison to other brands, that proves that research does make a huge difference when modifying your car properly than just getting the most expensive brand stuff!!!!

This Injen makes more than the AEM but people still buy the AEM. The J's Racing is very similar to the Mugen but it has a larger chamber before the throttle body, again, no dyno results floating around at all. I didn't want to spend thousands on the Mugen or the J's not knowing about their gains. The J's Racing headers for the S2K are dyno proven to be great though, making power throughout the entire rev range which is awesome. I'll have to get them eventually.

OK guys, just came back from a session at the dyno to test the Buddy club dual Pro Spec exhaust (also replaced brake fluid as pedal was mush after EC track day, also raised the car up, now nicely balanced).

Here's a before and after dyno test performed in shootout mode on IS Motor Racing's dyno tonight.

I suspect exhausts have to bed in and potentially more gain would be had if we dyno tested again in a few weeks. Although some people are very particular about dyno reading accuracy, and would prefer to see dyno test performed at the same time on the same day, from feedback I have gotten from Chris at IS Motor Racing, you could put a car on their dyno now and 6 months later and only get 1kw difference.

Justin how come you didn't get the yellow plates as you usually do?

I knew someone would ask :) My signature yellow plates huh?! Well "2K" is so small it doesn't even reach the OEM plate holes. "2K" is actually Charles' (Autosalon Magazine) old plates. He had them in yellow and looking at his old pics, I decided the proportions of the plate weren't right (taller than wide) and also having to just stick it on with double sided tape doesn't appeal to me either, so silver it was.

The exhaust was a straight and simple bolt on job as Buddy club exhausts come with all new bolts and gaskets. It was fitted in 15 minutes by the boys at IS Motor Racing.

Awesome car Justin!!

The S2K is a car that I've always liked, the balance, the looks and that engine!!

I'll be keeping an eye on your progress, and BTW how long will you own this one??

.::F[L]Y::. - The stock brakes were OK for a few laps then the brake fluid boiled and pedal turned to mush. PM me a price although I've got a Buddy club header on order for dyno testing.

Angle - no idea?! :P lol.

Toda headers FTW!!! Looks awsome Justin. Although I would have gone with J's Racing cat-back.

The plates look sex! When are we going to see a Carbon fibre vented bonnet, and a set of TE37's or CE28's or even the new rims from Rays? hehe.

The Buddy club exhaust was put on for testing. I'm enjoying waking up the neighbors in the early am (last night lol) and setting off car alarms left right and centre but in all honesty it's a little loud for me without the silencers. Maybe I am not man enough lol... but if anyone wants it I'll be letting it go at half the price of RRP.

you get used to the noise. i thought you were going to take your time with this one. it seems as though i cant even keep up with reading how fast your modding it though.

Took Perry for a drive, he says it's not that loud. I know it's not that loud but I've never been a fan of drone. I spoke to Chris at ISMR. His Amuse exhaust also drones a lot. It's the car design I am pretty sure. MAYBE I could cut up the BC and put a bigger resonator in there. Same flow, just cut out the drone. We'll see. I agree, silencers are crap, a band-aid solution at best.
