View Full Version : Toyota Aurion
Anyone in Melbourne see the Toyota Aurion in yesterday's Herald Sun Motor Show 2006 liftout? Bitch is HOT. It's their challenger to the Commo and Falcon.

Nice.
I just found out that it's FWD. Not surprising I guess, but with all this talk about power and trying to appeal to Aussie Holden and Ford buyers, I figured RWD would have to be a given. Idiots.
if the aurion is the challenger to falcodores and its still a 6 & FWD ... wtf was the camry then??

camry will be a 4cyl only.
Yeah, the Camry was previously available in a 4cyl (more common) and 6cyl (not so common) config, but they want more variation in their large car range now. The Camry, as Milkman said, will be 4cyl only (in Aus, whereas international markets will still have the choice) and the Aurion will be a 6cyl with no plans for a V8. Unsurprising, since it's FWD (idiots!).

I guess they wanna get off the Camry name, since everyone knows what they are and how they perform, so they want a whole new platform to work on.
Aurion is fkn phat tho. I lurv it.

Oh geez... if it's gonna contend with the big 2 it has to be RWD :(
Hrmmm.. wonder if they'll make a sports version to compete with the XR6T and XR8 etc ;)
EDIT: Just browsing the company site and they said that a 3.5L supercharged V6 is on the cards... interesting.
it needs to be RWD to be cool. all that power and its being pulled along the road and not pushed

fingers crossed the performance supercharged version is AWD with an incar option to switch to rwd ;)
Update (http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/17/toyota-aurion-attempting-to-tackle-holden-and-ford-in-australia/)
... Since practically the birth of the Australian large car segment, the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon have dominated the market. Challengers from Chrysler, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and even Toyota have failed miserably, partly because of national pride and the fact that rwd seems to rule the roost there. Toyota Australia chairman emeritus John Conomos, admitted that some "traditionalists" will stick with the Falcon and Commodore. Yeah, we think so, too.
But Toyota Australia senior executive director of sales and marketing David Buttner downplayed the power of that group of buyers: "The tribalists love tradition and grunt. They've bought the same car for generations, largely determined by what their father bought – or which car won at Bathurst. They are a diminishing sub-segment, accounting for about 20 per cent of the market."
Haha. I'd love to know where they get that stat from. I bet they surveyed people who only buy the base-model (aka gutless and boring) version of the Commodore and Falcon, and I bet they only used stats from respondents over 50 years old.

Who are you guys kidding? :)
Even if the Aurion was RWD, you still wouldn't uy one, just like you don't buy Falcons and Commodores :D
i'd seriously think about it though

it's got fkn magnetic suspension!!!
the only toyota i'd ever buy is the possible new supra

The Aurion looks stunning. They have had one up on a pedestal in the middle of the city for a few weeks now. The back looks mean as with the twin exhausts. Seems the way to go for car manufacturers these days.

God damn...its a FWD ???

It's a Yes & No from me. Yes for its power & looks, but No for its typical toyota interior looks (boring) & it can't turn off traction control.
But saying that, i think its gonna be a winner. Although it don't have the RWD of Commodore or Falcon, but what it had (most importantly), is the Toyota's build quality.
Talking about the quality difference, here's my definition of the 3 companies' car image. Toyota's car is the "wife" kinda material where it will last long and always be there for you. Holden & Ford is the "One Night Stand" kinda material where it gets you all excited for a short while and not always be there for you.....
I think the VE Commodore is going to prove that Holden's build quality is now world class.

i DISAGREE..... Theres thousands of people who will have a Ford or a Holden in their family for life.
Im disappointed that this is all Toyota have to offer .....
Its the BEST SEDAN Toyota has to offer (not including Lexus).... no way it can compete to the new Holden in my opinion. I dont know what you others think, but i reckon the new HOlden Commo lineup has set a new standard in family sedans in the Asia Pacific region. The Aurion really just looks liek a new Camry side on, with new front and rear ends (that arent that nice looking). I guess Toyota are sticking to their 'Whitegoods' trademark by simply supplying unexciting, reliable, trustworthy cars that can take a lot of punishment.
I still think Toyota have played it a little too safe... but for good reason. Its still nothing overly exciting, and if u want power -- id still be looking at a holden. Sure its not RWD, but i think it'll be a winner amongst Fleet Cars and Leased Cars with the higher resale value, fuel economy, and undeniable reliability that Toyota thrives on worldwide.
So i say YES, it'll sell well, but im not overly excited by the way it looked AT ALL ... and NO, i wouldnt think about buying one unless it was RWD or AWD to meet other rivals from Mazda / Subaru / and the 'big 2' Holden and Ford.
Yep, that's it right there. It'll sell very well in the market for people who have usually bought the more boring versions of the Commo and Falcon, and it'll sell well with older people. But for 35-45yr old Aussie males, they'll get a Commodore or a Falcon. These people require RWD, they require power (and let's keep in mind, the "sports" Aurion is 200kw, while the regular Commodore is 195kw. Get in an SV6 or an SS and that battle is over already), they require Aussie icons. These things are all embodied by the Holdens and Fords, and not at all by Toyota.
Whoever thought of the names for the new lineup needs some lessons in originality !
ZR6?
.... sure its not an XR6?
Sportivo SX6
.... Sportivo name as been around for a while, so has SX in the Toyotas lineup of AE92 corollas and so on.
Toyota Aurion AT-X
.... Nothing all Terain about it ... but it sure does have an Automatic Transmission.
Toyota Aurion Presara
.... Lame name like a Tiida .. enuf said.
Toyota Aurion Prodigy 2006
.... Must of been listening to Fat of the Land at the time!
Is there also a need for 5 different models, all of which look awefully similar ..... ?

yeah, look like the new GS I like it in Sportivo form, but the normal one looks boring, didnt they try this trick a few years ago with the Avalon?? Camry name wont dir i rekon, it will come back.
Ohh and FYI, the new Commo has already got a recall.....Billions $$$ for nothing ahaha
What was the recall for? Every company gets recalls, it's par for the course.
Ah, just saw Speedy's post in the VE thread. Well that's alright, better to have caught it now than later once thousands have been sold.

Agree to Van / Speedy's disagreement.
But as mentioned, my comment is based on the previous general image of those companies. (Not taking into account of the current VE as they are too new to even see what actual built quality they have)
Yes there are people with holden/falcon the whole of their life, but it doesn't mean its a quality built / reliable made (compared to a Toyota quality).
I think one thing i must make clear is, i refer to quality to things likes dash rattles, door trim peering out....etc

Anyone who owns a Mazda6 will recognise this, it's awfully similar:

They don't make the Chaser anymore :( The replacement for it is the Mark X, which I reckon is a great looking car, like a more mature Altezza (and it's RWD), but not really a BIG car like the Falc/Commo and having sat in one, the swoopy rear roofline means that rear headroom ain't that great if you're not asian :D
http://toyota.jp/markx/dop/package/image/a-main.jpg
Also the biggest engine it comes with is a 188kw nat-asp V6 9and it weighs 1520kg) so in all probability a 200kw Aurion will eat it in a straight line...
The closest that the JDM Toyota range comes to a Chaser (as we know it) is the Crown Athlete, which comes with a 3.5L 232kw V6, but it's a porker at 1650kg tho, and is more of a VIP car than a drift slut:
http://toyota.jp/crownathlete/dop/package/image/p01-main.jpg
So...when you compare the 200kw Aurion against the JDM Toyotas...it ain't that bad...
Haha, I love all the little bits of english that you can find in Japanese advertising.

To me, the aircon vents / hazard button reminds me of my car (CH lancer ... same as CG, evo 7-9). The middle bit ure right, rreminds me of mazda , and the bottom tray things are f;n ugly like current model Corolla.
Now this (http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/26/sydney-special-toyota-aurion-sports-concept/) is a good looking Aurion.

But leading the medium sized car market isn't enough for Toyota. For years, they've had ambitions to take the Falcon and Commodore down a peg or two in the large car market by offering a variety of V6 Camry models, as well as introducing the Avalon in 2000. But thus far, any attempts at Toyota breaking into the large car market have ranged from limited to laughable.
It's called RWD, an addiction in the Australian large car market segment. I don't know where you clowns at Toyota get your research, but it doesn't take AC Nielsen to tell you that. Every large car you've released - barring the Avalon - would have sold beautifully if it were RWD.
