I picked up my new car last night. What a blast!

It is a 1997 Mazda MX-5 in Montego Blue. 146,000 kms. It's not as perfect as I had hoped but it just seemed like the right car. And in a lovely colour :)

BD bar, Watanabes and front lip spoiler should be compulsory :D
And I would like to extend my welcome (again) to the obsession

Just realised which car it is.....I guess Sudoxe didn't want to buy it.

The 97 is the best of all the NA's. Slightly higer compression ratio & some changes to the ECU.

Thanks guys :D Mods are lined up, first off cosmetic stuff. Got a lot to learn about suspension etc...

First mod, clear indicators!

Nice one! Welcome to the MX5 club......I'm loving mine.

What suspension options are you considering? I'm having a tough time deciding what to get for mine.

21-08-07, 03:07 PM
tein mono flexes would be my choice

Why did you choose the SS's then? Were the Mono Flex's not available at that point?

Normal Flexes were available at the time but I was in a stingy mood and went for SS's instead :D

But now that I've had double-adjustable G4s on the Luce, I reckon the few hundred bucks extra for the Flexes are worth the extra adjustability you get.

21-08-07, 05:36 PM
that is a nice colour. I think mx5s and integras are the most popular cars on this forum.

I think AE86s, Silvias, Civics, Pulsars, Skylines and Integras are more popular than the MX5 in JDMST

21-08-07, 06:29 PM
Well, the last time I did a count of MX5 owners on this forum a year or so ago it was over 30

Of course, a few have moved on, stopped visiting, sold or written off () their cars since then. But I reckon there's been many more new members with 5's signing up than there have been with Skylines, Silvias, Hachis, Tegs or Swifts...

I broke it :(

After coming home about midnight on Sunday night, I had to drop off my mate who came down to Rosebud with me to pick it up. He insisted on taking the top down (lol), so I did, but forgot to unzip the back window... SNAP! Then I remembered. So I unzipped it and away we went. Only today when I put the top back up I noticed I actually cracked the plastic window a good 30-40cm down near the bottom. The window must have gotten so hard from the cold wind on the drive home that when I put the top down it just cracked instead of folding.

So kind of annoyed.

I assume one can get a new rear window put in? It's an aftermarket top anyway... wonder if I can get a glass NB one put in without having to replace the whole top?

Daniel, sell that Micra and get yourself another MX5 (unless you've bought the 5 back from the previous buyer)
I can see that your heart is still set at the 5

:)

Alfadog
23-08-07, 10:34 AM
So does anyone know where I could get just the rear window part of the top? Perhaps a MX-5 specialist in Melbourne? Is there a list of their locations anywhere?

nath
23-08-07, 10:59 AM
Try the MX5 factory

Edit: In Ringwood I think???

McCoey
23-08-07, 11:12 AM
Yup, MX-5 factory, Molan st in Ringwood. Ask for Dick Ritchie.

So alfadog, how are you finding the drive of your new toy?

Alfadog
23-08-07, 11:59 AM
Thanks guys, I'll check it out on Sat.

It's fun :D The rear does come out a lot easier than I expected, but it's amazingly predictable and controllable. VERY weird coming from my previous two cars. It doesn't have as much grip as I thought though - can't take corners as fast as I thought I might be able to. The suspension is also too soft.

But damn, she's gorgeous...

Get Bilstein PSS9 or Tein SS coilovers, BD rollbar, a nice set of lightweight wheels and hi-po road tires.

McCoey
23-08-07, 12:29 PM
Meh, the wheels you have are light already, but if you want to go up an inch, the NB wheels are lightweight, plus they looks great on an NA. Maybe some wannbees? As fas as suspension if you are made of money then the bilsteins would be awesome, otherwise the cheapest alternative would be kings/konis combination. That should be around or just under $1,500.

BD rollbar would sure stiff the beast up, as would sways and struts. As for grip, some new fancy rubber would sure fix your grip prblems.

As far as cheap mods (both asthetic and performance) that are a must for NA's IMO my list would consist of:

Advance the timming.

magnecore leads.

CAI.

Cat back zorst.

Extractors. (I love the racing beat extractors)

Clear indicators/reflectors (youve done those :) )

Replacing all fluids, g'box, engine, diff all prolly to somthing like motul.

The list would then go on getting more expensive...blah blah blah coil overs etc...

Babalouie
23-08-07, 12:36 PM
Ya sounds like your rubber is rooted. And if the shocks are oem, they would be too.

But meh, sliding = fun.

McCoey
23-08-07, 12:59 PM
If the shocks are orig and at 140kms then yeah, they would be rooted as babs says. Tyres looks like oem yokohama's? (hard to tell with the photo's) which are probably old and hard and in need of replacing.

On the upside, with your stock wheels 185/60R14 82V semi's like r888's are CHEAP! ;)

DrewMan
23-08-07, 01:38 PM
just remember that the stiffer your suspension is (tein mono flex)the better the turns will be, but it will be a lot bumpier and shake your fillings out!

or you could just get the EDFC!

ever tried the HKS Hypermax II or the Cusco zero2?

try www.perfectrun.com.au for some parts

A second hand set of konis/kings are probably going to set you back $700, new rubber probably $800 = problem solved!

Or a brand new set of KYB AGX's from US Ebay, delivered to your door for less than 500 bucks. I've found them to be immensely superb....even teamed with my el cheapo King springs

What's the retail on new Koni/Kings lately anyway? But IMHO if alfadog is going to get JDM wheels then he'll need adjustable ride height for that cruicial extra slammage

nath
23-08-07, 02:33 PM
They're about $1300 I think.

However, Mu Secret has $500 off Buddyclub coil overs which means you can get the cheaper of the two kits available for the MX5 for around $1000 I think?

Yes but I think the $500 is if you already have old dead coilovers fitted to your car.

deez
23-08-07, 02:36 PM
Or old dead aftermarket shocks/springs to trade in...

Babalouie
23-08-07, 02:37 PM
Well I DO have a dead set of Tein HA for FC3S sitting on the shelf but it hardly seems sporting to consider those a "tradein" :)

I assume that the old shocks have to be connected to the car in some way, shape or form, instead of a pile of loose bits inside a cardboard box :D

:( D... our old car! :(

Alfadog
25-08-07, 01:59 PM
I should clarify :D
1. It's not a 'soft ride' at all... quite firm, just, I like having my teeth rattled out. :D
2. The tyres are Hankook Optimo K406 rear and Caliente HR front. Neither are particularly good rubber...... but I never said I was complaining ;)

OH btw do our Aussie MX-5 come with the wiring to wire up the lights behind my new reflectors? Is there any tutorial for this?

Went to the MX-5 factory, but they just gave me a card and said to call back on Monday. Oh well! Was a nice drive ... this weekend is GREAT convertible weather in Melbourne!
