Sweet!

After years of idling, the big-screen, live-action version of "Speed Racer" is ready to zoom, this time with Larry and Andy Wachowski behind the wheel.

The Wachowski brothers are writing and will direct the movie, which will be produced by Joel Silver. The movie will be the duo's first directorial outing since completing the Silver-produced "Matrix" series in 2003. They are reuniting with several of the creative behind-the-scenes talent from the "Matrix" films, including executive producer Grant Hill and visual effects supervisor John Gaeta, who won an Oscar for his work on "The Matrix."

Based on the classic 1960s series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida that later was retooled for North American audiences, the big-screen "Speed" will follow the adventures of the young race car driver Speed in his quest for glory in his thundering gadget-laden vehicle, Mach 5. The movie will feature other characters from the show, including Speed's family and his mysterious archrival, Racer X.

Silver has been trying to get the film version off the ground since the early 1990s; in 2004, Vince Vaughn even pitched a take that cast him as Racer X. When Silver worked on "V for Vendetta" with the Wachowskis, he approached them about tackling the project. The duo were reluctant to do it unless they could figure out a way to bring something new to the table.

"They are approaching these racing scenes in a way you've never seen before," said Silver, adding that the brothers are designing the movie's look as they write. Silver also said that unlike the more adult-oriented material of the Wachowskis' past -- "Vendetta," the "Matrix" movies and "Bound" were all rated R -- "Speed" will be family-friendly.

"They wanted to do something that could appeal to everybody," Silver said.

The plan is for the Wachowskis to shoot in summer 2007 for a summer 2008 release.

Courtenay Valenti is overseeing for the studio.

"Speed" will be a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, of a Silver Pictures production.

Can't wait for that!

...although I'm sure it won't be called "Speed" since there is a well-known Keanu Reeves movie of the same name? :D

Haha, I'd say they're just quoting it as "Speed" because it's quicker to say and type than "Speed Racer" :)

I hope it's better than their last 2 efforts :P

Well yeah, The Matrix sequels were balls, but V For Vendetta was ace! Mind you, they only wrote that (the screenplay, that is), they didn't direct it.

Yeah I did enjoy V For Vendetta. Especially now that I sometimes have my egg on toast in the same way :)

Whoa, just found out about this, rather excited!! According to the IMDB page (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0811080/) it is being shot largely in front of a green screen.... which sounds dreadful, unless it is for the gratuitous use of motion lines!

*drum roll* Now for the trailer (http://www.worstpreviews.com/trailer.php?id=401&item=0) :D

Looks alright... I'll say one thing the Wachowski Brothers have kept the look of the film very faithful to the cartoon even the dude wears the same blue polo shirt lol.

V for vendetta was good, as was the matrix but I reckon this is going to suck donkey balls in a large way.

CoffeeBoss

hmmmm.... let's be honest, even on animation terms, Speed Racer wasn't a paragon of story or detail. But it seems as if they have chosen that as a reason to just do another all-out action/CG fest that just leaves you feeling cold afterwards (see also: Matrix 2 & 3). Meh, I'll go and see it anyway.

That looks ridiculous. I think I'll wait for the DVD to come out...and even then I'll wait till it's on a weekly rental, actually, I might just wait till it's on tv. lol

Nothing worse than a car movie that doesn't even try to keep some sort of realistic physics.

Never really see the original....did it come from a cartoon or comic? Anyway, can't comment when i don't even know what to expect from the original...

Aliens. In my opinion, one of the great action movies. Had a group of friends at school who were obsessed with the Alien franchise, Aliens in particular. We used to quote the movie verbatim all the time. One dude even had the whole film recorded to casette so he could listen to it on his walkman. Man, we were like Nerds, Old Skool.

Is anyone else strangely pumped for this?

It's doing terribly in the states and all the critics say it sucks but I'm still really looking forward to it...

I am too. Who cares what the critics say :)

I started another thread a couple of weeks about the Speed Racer Movie (which got locked by an admin - I didn't know there was already a Speed Racer thread) ...

http://forum.jdmstyletuning.com/showthread.php?p=221779

The trailers look awesome.

In that thread I wrote ...

The latest pre-release trailers have started coming out in the last few weeks. I've put links to the trailers and the original Speed Racer series on one page on our site to save everyone time trying to find them ...

I mad the mistake of sitting through this movie last night.

Think the live action, filming and jokes style of The Flinstones (Live action, the second one, which was even more shit than the first!)

Once again, Hollywood has massacred a classic anime.

I fear the day they release Robotech, Battle Angel Alita and Akira.

I lost it towards then end when his car wouldn't start. "Just put it in fifth and you can jump start it." Jesus tap-dancing Christ, that's just lazy writing...
