Okay! I've decided I'm definitely going to go ahead with the comic, though it will be a very long process due to other commitments. That said, it's a go!

This is the first character I've designed for the story. He's not the main character, but I can already tell he'll be my favourite. ;) He's probably going to be the best friend of the main guy (the main guy being the one who buys the 240Z). He's a smartarse, opinionated, biased, and likes to stir the main character up.

He doesn't have a name yet.

Stay tuned for more character art, and maybe another drawing of the S30Z!

Here's the main character. His name is Alex, and he's now got quite a lengthy backstory. So he's going to be good fun to write and draw.

Anyway, this needs some cleaning up, quite a lot of shaky lines on the car. And colouring needs to be done, of course!

Yes, that's Ben Affleck. Hey, you use what you can get, alright? ;)

The number plate isn't permanent, I'm still waiting for you guys to come up with something clever (and following the conditions I've set out, of course!) ;)

I just wanted something to fill the plate for now :)

Thanks Garth :). I was gonna sticky it, but I thought maybe there were enough stickied threads in Off Topic as it is haha.

Okay! Here are some more sketches, and these ones are likely to make up the cover for either the first or second issue (second issue? Sheesh, I hope I make it that far! Heh).

The first sketch is our hero, Alex, sitting in his Demon Z (absolutely a nod to the Devil Z of Wangan Midnight ;)).

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l144/friendipity/alex-in-car.jpg

The next sketch is the bad guy, with one of his slags clinging to him. I haven't got a name for him yet, and he's not technically a "bad" guy. You see, Alex and he were racing one night about 5 years back - before Alex got the Demon Z - and the bad guy had his younger sister in the passenger seat of his car. Something happened to Alex's car, causing him to collide with the bad guy's car. The bad guy's car went careening into a power pole after a couple of spins, and his sister wound up dead. The bad guy has sworn vengeance, and in the 5 years since that night, he's become quite the rough nut.

Anyway, that's the idea at this point.

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l144/friendipity/bad-guy.jpg

So these two sketches will be combined into one piece, with the comic's logo mixed in somewhere too.

I hope y'all dig it!

Both of the above sketches, as per usual, are from photo reference. I can't take credit for the poses, only for the faces and the general cartoony style.

I'd also like to congratulate BabeLouie on winning the contest that I put up, asking y'all to come up with a name for the comic. After getting some awesome entries, I put together a list of the words I liked most from the entries that had been submitted, and BabaLouie ended up putting together the best combo: Endless Spirit: Final Evolution Z

The "prize" was the "honour" (haha) of having your car featured in the comic. So y'all can expect to see BL's MX-5 show up in ES:FEZ!

Because I liked a few of the other entries as well, I'll be contacting certain contest participants in the near future to offer them the opportunity to have their car featured as well. So look forward to that too!

Okay, some test colours for the bad guy.

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l144/friendipity/bad-guy-coloured.jpg

I used Pantone markers for this, which are an alcohol-based professional quality set of markers, and they're quite expensive. Think AU$60 for a box of 6! We've got 5 boxes so far, heh.

Alas, I don't yet have as many colours as I'd like, and the guy's hair turned out a bit orange. He'll have darker brown hair in the comic, but maybe blonde. Not sure yet.

Anyway, I hope you dig it! The final colours in the actual cover will be much nicer, I hope. This is all practice. :)

Here's an early look at the text for page 1.

-----------

PANEL One

A hand holding a Driver's Licence. Alex's licence.

PANEL Two

Zoom out to discover the hand belongs to a Police Officer, and he's standing at the driver's side door of Alex's car, licence in hand, looking down at Alex. Alex has a nervous and pleasant and helpful look. Alex is driving an old Corolla AE85.

Police Officer: Says here your licence is restricted.
Alex: The little "R" under "Conditions"? That's for my motorbike. I'm off my Learners permit but not yet fully licenced. So I'm "Restricted" until then.

PANEL Three

Still zoomed out, we see the officer gesturing toward the car.

Police Officer: Right. Where are you headed now? Is this one of them “drifting” cars I heard about? Instant D?
Alex: Insta... You mean Initial D? There's one of these cars in that show, yes. But we're not out drifting if that's what you're asking. These cars are rubbish in reality.

PANEL Four

Police Officer: (looking off into the distance, almost dazed) Heck if I know why it's called “drifting” anyway... Throwing a car around a corner is hardly what I'd call drifting.
Alex: Yeah... Can we go now?
Police Officer: Eh? Oh right. Yeah go on. But no racing, right?

PANEL Five

Now we see Shane, Alex's friend and passenger, through Alex's window.

Shane: With a big strapping lad like me in the passenger seat? Nah mate, with him being such a scrawny bastard, it'd throw the power to weight ratio out the window!
Alex: (mumbling) Why, why are you speaking...?

PANEL Six

Police Officer bends down to see Shane, whom he hadn't noticed until now. We can see all three faces in this shot.

Police Officer: Ha ha ha, righto then! Off you go.

The next page will be one full-page frame of the officer getting back into his car, and Alex and Shane driving off into the distance. The Endless Spirit: Final Evolution Z logo will be at the top, with an introductory paragraph and a thank you to the various folks who've helped so far. It'll probably have a couple of voice balloons above the car with Shane asking "What would you have said if he asked again where we're going?" and Alex replying "I'd have told him we're goin' to pick up the Devil Z."

The following is - as yet - unscripted. I'm trying to build the story first, and then I'll break it down into script form.

I'll be adding in bits and pieces to fill it out a little more, but for the most part, this is the story for all of issue 1. What's below the hashed line follows on from the scripted page above. Feedback would be greatly appreciated! Let me know where I'm going wrong, in your opinion. I won't be offended. I want this to be as good as it can be, so I need to know what you think. :)

--------------------

Alex and Shane are waiting at the lights, when a dude in a MkIII Supra pulls up beside them. He guns his motor, to entice them into a drag. Alex says “not right now, but if you're here when I come back through, I'll go you then”. The dude makes a face and then screams off down the road.

Alex and Shane arrive at the docks, where they're expecting to find Alex's S30Z which he has imported. Just as they walk through the gates, the S30Z is being rolled out of a shipping container.

Frame zooms in on the Z, which we can see through the gap between Alex and Shane. We can see the lower arms and upper legs of Alex and Shane, but they're not the focus. The focus is the Z.

Alex signs all the relevant paperwork and collects his car from the front of the office, where it's been parked to wait for him. Shane accompanies. They look it over, checking under the hood, under the body, in the boot, the whole lot. Alex gets in, and Shane runs around to the other side to get in as well. Alex puts the key in the ignition and starts it. It roars to life. The L28t sounds amazing, and they both say so.

They leave the docks, Shane in the Corolla and Alex in the Z. As they pull up to some lights, they laugh about having a drag, and the fact that the Z would leave Shane way behind. Suddenly, the MkIII Supra from earlier pulls up on the other side of Alex, and suddenly the idea of a drag isn't so funny anymore. Alex has faith in the Z, even though it's the first time he's driven it. But can he beat this Supra? Suddenly the light changes, and they're off, engines blaring and turbos chirping.

The Z not only wins, but it blows the Supra away. Alex is amazed. Pissed off, the Supra driver doesn't bother to join him at the next set of lights, and takes a right turn to avoid seeing Alex again. Moments late, Shane finally pulls up beside Alex, and is almost ghostly pale. He mentions what he swears was a red glow around the Z as it stormed down the road, and says – almost frightened - “dude... that seriously is the Demon Z”. Alex has a blank expression, unsure of what the hell just happened.

By the way, did anyone else notice that I'm writing a comic about a car called the DEMON Z, and the thread ID number for this thread is 666 ;)

Wow, long time between posts. I have to confess that not much has happened in the last few weeks, courtesy of the fact that it's allegedly the season to be jolly, which translates into Vanlish as "pull in as much freelance design work as you can, so you can pay for them damn presents and bills, and then work your arse off boy".

On the bright side, I've just acquired Manga Studio EX 3.0 (http://www.e-frontier.com/go/mangastudio/ex), which their website and a couple of Youtube videos assures me is the most badass method for creating manga and comics. Plenty of automated things like speedlines and halftones - which as we all know, are a staple part of the manga diet - so that should help to take some of the "OMG this is so much work that it's frightening" out of the picture.

Stay tuned for more updates, most likely after xmas!

Holy shit, can you believe this? I've actually managed to churn out a page! Admittedly it's only the rough sketch so far, but at least it's something. At this rate, I should have chapter 1 finished by 2023! *sigh*

This is the first page for the comic. In it, we see Alex and his mate Aaron have been pulled over by a cop on some random check or whatever. The details on the licence are - at the moment - temporary. I'll decide on more permanent details later, such as the name of the made-up country the comic is set in, etc.

The last panel - the empty one in the bottom right of the page - will have the cop bending down to talk to Aaron, who's just made a smartarse comment through the window. Haven't figured out the best way to draw that last panel yet.

Just a progress shot from the "inking" stage. This Manga Studio program is fucking difficult to get my head around, and it's really making the whole project very frustrating for me. But I keep hearing about how awesome it is and how it's so much quicker to achieve "manga-esque" results than in a program like Photoshop, so I'll stick with it for the time-being.

Here's a progress shot from a different scene. I decided to use Photoshop rather than Manga Studio. I'll probably still use Manga Studio for doing textures and speed-lines and such (those familiar with manga comics will know what I mean), but the actual sketching and inking will be done 100% in Photoshop.

I'm hoping to use no paper at all! Gotta love having a drawing tablet, haha.

Thought you folks might like to see a glimpse of how I do things, so I'll (very vaguely) walk you through the steps to drawing a person inside the Z!

http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u139/vanmonken/process-01.jpg

1) Sketch it out, usually in light blue. You can use any colour obviously, but I'm just used to using blue haha. You can see it's quite a messy sketch, its purpose is to give me an idea of the shape and pose I'll be using.

http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u139/vanmonken/process-02.jpg

2) Now that I've got the shape and pose down, I can start to figure out details. Switch to red, and use the blue lines as a guide. I've turned off the blue lines in this shot, so that you can see the red lines more easily.

http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u139/vanmonken/process-03.jpg

3) Throw in the final inks. Basically identical to the red lines, but a little more polished, neater, sharper. And, uh, black.

http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u139/vanmonken/process-04.jpg

4) erase the various parts of the car that the person's body crosses over, so the person fits the scene properly!

Voila, done :)

Here's a little glimpse of the progress for page 1.

Babalouie's writing the story, and I gotta tell you folks, it's awesome. The guy is good.

Now I gotta put this on hold for a few hours while I try to turn Babs's MS Excel map of Bayside City into a proper freaking map, haha. Woo!
