View Full Version : s30's 240Z (56k nono)
Managed to borrow a camera the other day, so here is my car!
It's a '71 240z.
- bought it from a hippy 4 years ago(still have the 'give blood' and save the whales' stickers on the back)
Took it for it's first spin at wakefield last week, and it was a shitload of fun.
Hope to see y'all at the Queens Bday circuit club meet.
My driveway is perhaps the worst place to take photos from, so excuse the dodgy angles.

I am so jealous!
same here! goddamn thats my dream to build and restore one of those. an absolute classic love your work :D 8)
dam.. do i dare ask how much?
see .. this is my issue.. i always liked "old skool".. but i dont know jack all about them.. and my girl" . she loves them. and i would love to start a project restore.. or buy and fix.. but i wouldnt know where to start.. sigh*
ANYWAYZ.. love the car mate.. its awesome!!!
wat time did you run?
That looks freakin sensational mate. Quality all round!
jonno.
S30 old skool. Very cool !!!!!!!!!!!! 8) 8) 8)
I like the driveway shots.
I wish I kept mine. :(
how much?
The initial idea was to get a cheap track car that I could beat up on so my daily driver would be a-ok 7 days a week.
I bought the car for 2 grand, and i have gone quite a bit over that now. In fact, i've easily spent over the amt of my daily driver, and there's plenty more left to improve.
I am such a silly bstrd..
Wakefield times were even more hilarious. It laps slower than my daily driverat the moment- 1:19/20. I was getting 1:18's in a stock corolla, so it just goes to show how far modern cars have come!
It is definitely capable of a much better time, just have to sort out the reliability and consistency first.
:p
Photoshoot? hell yeh, always wanted to get some 'proper' photos of it.:)
Is that the 2.8L ? Throttle Bodies so sexxxxyy !
Mike.V?!

Very nice and very clean, great work mate. You must be proud to see how far you have brought her from her hippy days!

thats damnnnnnnnn hot!! :)
It has the original 2.4 litre- bored out to 2.8 litres, Not quite the way most people do it and there isn't a good reason for it either.
It makes around 120kw @ wheels- and goes relatively well since it isn't too heavy.
That being said, a proper 2.8 with decent parts swapping etc should be around 150kw with the triple 45 dcoe's.

Always cool to see how many people used to have Z's!
so i still havent driven the car properly since the last track day. (times have dropped from 1:19 to around 17/18).
But hope to see some of you all again at the labour day trackday.

great stuff! I love it! I will be at the labour day track day, so we should have a battle haha.
Quick update post circit club, and pre next wed trackday.
http://acw.moliu.org/albums/album13/MG_0802.sized.jpg
had a relatively good run at the labour day trackday..... for 2 laps, until the gearbox lost 2nd gear completely and 3rd gear impartially.
Felt like packing it in and going home, but the thought of driving home again gave me the shits more.
I went out the rest of the day just using 3rd and 4th gear. Due to the lack of pull out of the hairpin, and fish hook I found I had to learn to brake later and floor the gas waaay earlier. It was almost like I had bloody vtec again lol j/k (used to have a vti-r hatch).
Anyhow, like a bad initial D episode, I found I was actually driving quicker than a few months ago, since my official quickest lap on the day with the 2 gears was 1:19.
The next few days after the track day, I had several options:
1. rebuild current gearbox. Least $$ most intelligent option since I would be leaving the country in a few months.
2. think about the rare nismo option dogleg box my mechanic had once mentioned he had lying around.
CONS:
- $$$
- least intelligent
- impractical : 5th gear is direct 1:1 so Im going to be driving at > 3500rpm at 110km/h. Being a dogleg box, 1st gear is where 2nd usually is and reverse is where 1st is which means if I daydream one day at the lights i'm going to be reversing into the truck behind me.
PROS:
- its a super rare factory collectible, rebuilt and in practically new condition
- I'm going to be a lot quicker out of the corners since I'll always be in my power band.
- the dogleg pattern brings me closer to pretending i am driving an old lambo.
being an absolute car loser, I opted for the option box of course!
Also managed to weigh the car on some corner scales the other day.
With a pretty empty tank of petrol and noone in it
total weight is 1075kg.
With me in the car, things are surprisingly close to 50/50.
its roughly 51/49 front:rear
and about 50.x/50.x side to side
power is about 120kw@wheels dyno dynamics.
Next report after wednesdays practice day.
Hahah, an exciting week in the life of S30! I so can't wait until I get a Z, but it's tough to weigh the cost of that against my love for motorbikes too :( But I will find a way, damn it!
Justin Fox

Wow how's it so damn light?! I'm still on for Wednesday too, weather pending!
trick is to wait until some other geezer has blown their load on a Z (especially the body work), and then offer them an amount so low they will cry but will still accept.
Problem is everyone seems to have that idea lately.
The really good Z's go for huge prices.
'WRC' the concours winning silver Z with an orange stripe thats been in a few magazines sold for around $45,000!! its coming to NSW now.
A few nice ones in melbourne have sold for near$20,000.
I really want to go the hardcore route and strip a Z down completely, cut out every tiny bit of rust, etc. I know it's generally what people see as a pipe dream, and projects like that usually end up half-finished and way over budget, but still... Heh, ah well.

Holy crap,
Can't believe he sold it already.
Van- i presume you've seen the films that 'mull' has made over in sweden land. He's done it the super hard way lol, but seems to have the backing of some very talented and useful companies!
Alfadog- Im not sure of the exact price that wrc sold for, but it was high and it was to the NSW Z car clubs pres. The car itself is a beast and is probably worth 45grand. To engine alone cost about 12g, option box etc..
I also found out some interesting info from the same folk about the engines in the recent winning African safari rally Z cars that were prepared in australia.
Was a triple weber carbed 2.6 litre with the works- (restricted capacity due to rules)
They had pretty much custom everything made up, crankshaft alone was $7000 but allowed the L26 to rev to 8 and over easily and consistently.
For a $30,000 engine it made about 140kw at the wheels reliably.
In contrast, the WRC car has 3 litres and makes close to 160kw@wheels.

Yeah mate, I have seen the "WRC" car numerous times and do appreciate it. No doubt one of the best in the country. I like the style. It is still a lot of money for a modified Z-car, especially in Australia.
Good for him though don't get me wrong :) I agree with you in that it's worth over 45k. Obviously the guy with the cash did too. Will have to buy another one before they really start appreciating!!
Interesting stuff to be able to talk with some of the Australians who were involved with rally cars. I like the comment about the rules... Not all of the features on those Works cars were totally , and utterly , to the book :)

dosent it have a lock-out spring to stop accidentaly banging it into reverse??
yo!
when it is stationary there is no lockout mechanism on the gearbox, and it's actually quite easy to pop it into first.
This is a pic from the xmas CC day.

The last trackday I attended, managed to get it into the 1:14.X handtimed whilst everything held together. It was only on the drive home that all the electricals started playing silly buggers. I now have no rear brake/reverse lights, no dashboard lights, and one of my front swaybar links snapped in half.
I think with a bit of playing around with the alignment and swaybars, more consistent 1:14's/13's are possible.
To get into the 12's, an LSD and somehow making the brakes more progressive.
The bridgestone G3s were holding up really well until the last trackday, and they are now chunking all over the place, still plenty of tread though.
: ]
may i suggest doing some big smokey burnouts to take the edges off the chunks
so wen it gna hit the wangan? :D haha
nice car man, wanna sell it :P
I reckon S30s have gotten to a point where selling one would be insane. I mean, I know sometimes you just need the money and it feels like your only choice, but damn. Finding a 2seater S30 in good condition is really starting to get damn hard, so I know that if I had one, I'd sell my kidneys before selling the S30!
Very nice! I'm loving the look of this car.
Question though, what happened to the front lip in pic 2? It's different in the other pics.

heheheh one of the most important apex's to hit come'n down from the hill........
That pic says it all about this car..........the look the feel and the tradition.......Vince has put in alot of dedication to get the car to where it is atm.
The S30's are getting rare .........to the point where prices are climbing up quite steadily but not impossible to find.
I'd encourage any one out there who is thinking, to DO ET.........but be prepaid for the semi big budget depending on your ambitions.
Very nice ride. Nice to see someone putting in the effort to bring a legend back to life!

The spoilers are different in the pics, because I changed from fibreglass to urethane, and had the urethane one painted a few times.
im going to be coming back to oz mid december, hopefully dusting the z off for the autosports day.[unless more things have broken whilst in semi storage].
Everything is as I left it after the last trackday, and it managed to pass pink slip recently (thanks dumhed).

funny you guys bought this up now..........his back from UK for chrissy and is enjoying it during this short stay.
Does anyone know what size watanabes this car is running, its suits the car perfectly!
bought a spare engine for the z recently.
The engine in question had been built up many years ago by a friend hoping to compete in a race series. the racing never happened, so it had been sitting in the corner of his garage for about 6 years before he asked me to lowball him.
capacity is around 2.9 litres, custom rods and pistons etc
interestingly, it also has a set of magnesium throttle bodies off a sprint car.
Apparently safe for 9000rpm but we shall see what the engine builder says.

* mossy the watanabes are 15x 8.5 with -6 offset. they are a slightly strange production as they seem to have more concavity in the spokes than actual dish.
i got them off yahoo auctions many years ago.
a very clean z indeed. its always good to see the old school jdm cars beeing used not just polished and left in a shed. It must sound good with those ITB's too. Keep it up mate she looks tres bien (french for fu*kn sick)

I actually ended up getting some 16x9 and 16x9.5 wats for my 240, i much prefer the darker charcoal wats to the silver wats, gives the car a tougher race look.
nice choice mossy. am sure they will fill the guards nicely.
A few updates. I'm heading back to Sydney for a few weeks in december and was hoping to head to a trackday or two(it's a shame the circuit club festival is the week after i leave!).
Have been collecting a few things along the way:
*Watanabe Steering wheel. saw a whole bunch of these for sale on ebay years ago and never jumped on it. They became discontinued and I've kept my eye out ever since, finally found a new one last week. Should have a more 'period' feel than the Sabelt rally wheel I have at the moment.

*OS Giken r180 LSD
http://www.urbanracer.com/gallery/articles/sema/2003/pshow/0010-01.jpg
* adjustable rear control arms to fix the rear toe in finally!!
http://www.technotoytuning.com/NEWPRODUCTS/ZLCA.jpg
* Toyo r888 in 225/50/15- I never planned to put semislicks on the Z as I prefer the fun factor of street tyres, but there just isnt a choice of decent street tyres in this size currently.
car should also hopefully be getting a lightweight rewiring + the mega engine installed!

any plans to sell the sabelt wheel?
Wasnt planning on selling the sabelt, as it was a present from someone!
may pop it on a car back in the UK if I ever get around to sorting out a garage.

Does the OS Giken LSD fit the old style driveshafts, or will it have to be modified to adapt it to the older shafts with the bolt in the middle?
Good question. haven't tackled it yet :p
From the information I got from the vendor- it is for the later 115mm ID ring gear r180's and suitable for the 25 spline side shafts.
no mention if it needs the bolt in or clip in side shafts.
I don't even know if I have an early or late r180 to be honest. It shouldnt be too difficult to modify either way. Shall let you know when it's installation time.
Man what an awesome car
So rare to see such a fine example
Back in sydney as of next week for a brief visit.
Will be hitting up the trackday with Dumhed on friday 4th of december.
We have about 4 days to prep everything!!
May have a spare cheaper ticket for the trackday if anyone is interested? it is run by MRT.
Hopefully the GoPro HD arrives as well so i can capture some footage

The Diffman was able to get the LSD into a spare 'K' r180 about 12 hours before the trackday but we didnt end up installing it in time.
The only things we managed to install before the trackday were the RCA's and semislicks.
These both made a massive difference to the handling. Previously, the handling on the Z was fairly neutral 90% of the time with a tendency to oversteer very abruptly if there was any sudden jerky inputs. There was also fairly terrible traction out of slow corners like the fishhook. A lot of this was down to crappy street tyres and having mismatched toe in/out in the rear.
With a proper alignment and some decent grip from the R888's I could brake a lot later, and floor it from the apex of most corners with excellent traction. With the current power levels, the lack of LSD is not really noticeable.
Unfortunately after about 2-3 sessions the brakes started fading dramatically!
No amount of flushing seemed to make a difference and it was decided that the seals in the master cylinder had crapped themselves after sitting around for so long.
*mental note, when a car from the 70's flashes up a 'brake warning light' on the dashboard it usually means you need to start crapping yourself.
Another item we managed to finally pick up was the mega engine.

Very excited about this, as in the flesh it all looks very well put together. The exhaust collectors are beautifully thought out and I could almost see the tears in the eyes of the previous owner as we hauled it away.
There are quite a few unconventional little tricks and details on this engine and I'm going to have to go EFI to do it justice.

holy fuck that engine porn
yur z is very nice too
Has been a while since last touched the car.
* I'm returning back to OZ for a week and will try and squeeze in 1 or 2 trackdays in that time. Will try to make it to the Circuit club day on the 18th.
* the OS Giken LSD is finally installed (along with a more sturdy custom diff mount)- can't wait to see how it goes.
* We have most of the bits ready for the new engine: (adaptronic, injectors, new fuel system, airbox, airhorns)
- What we do not have is time, will have to work day and night to hopefully get the engine in and tuned within 5 days (LOL)
Worst comes to worst we will run 1 trackday with just the diff and standard engine, and try for the 2nd trackday with new engine.
New injectors and their boots :p

not my engine bay, but the same airbox. It is a modified TWM fibreglass( carbon outer) airbox (deletes any inbound fasteners that may get sucked into the engine) from MJP auto in the UK.

Little to no progress since last year.
PB at wakefield was 1:12.2 with the same package as last time except with working brakes + LSD +toyo R888.
No reliability problems and did a total of over 40 laps in hot weather no problems.
I've been compiling bits and pieces through the year to prepare for the new engine and also a light rebuild.
We now have access to a hoist and workshop space so hopefully there will be some proper work done on the car in the next few months.
I was in two minds as to whether or not to continue down the track car theme and make things more extreme or to just make a fun to drive fast road car.
Current plan is to go more extreme!
This will most likely involve: polycarbonate windows, further chassis stiffening, insertion of EFI engine, more aggressive brake setup.
There is also a 5 piece (supposingly genuine) G nose that has been sitting in the garage for about 5 years doing nothing but collecting dust, so I bought some light covers to go with it.
I envisage there will be some major headaches with the new engine. For starters, although the exhaust looks somewhat sexy, they need a fair amount of work to ensure they fit properly and don't have any leaks. In the photos you can see there is a step from the flange to the primary section of the headers. This was built with antireversion in mind. Most of the pictures of antireversion chambers I've seen seem to happen further down the primary and their benefits are a bit controversial!
The intake is also somewhat interesting in that it is angled in such a way so that the fuel injectors have a straight path into the ports and the throttle bodies are angled in. This also then means the fuel rail lies right on top of the headers which is less than ideal.
We are going to keep everything as how the original engine designer planned just to see if it works. Having seen the size of the cam, it is probably going to have a pretty rough idle :D.

^ Was searching for a new tachometer for a long time. This popped up on yahoo auctions recently. Am pretty sure it is the same as the 3 times more expensive Kameari tachometers.

Ahhhh so this is the car Andrew keeps talking about! Can't wait to see it in the flesh. You gonna be at the workshop at all this week?

Can't remember where I yanked that photo from, but I went back to the archives and it came from this photoalbum.

Looks suspiciously like the 432 of Kats who posts on classiczcar occasionally.

Im still in the UK at the moment, so not sure what Andrews plans are just yet. It'll be in there in the coming months hopefully.

Nice! Yeah I don't think its the same guy. This (http://240rs.jp) is my acquaintance's site for his 240RS and 432Z work.
Ah, that 432 is somewhat infamous! One of the only 432's i've seen with non period mods.
Cool link.
Also.... I just survived driving this car back from Birmingham to London yesterday(motorway death!).
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x225/Honda-man_photos/Honda%20S800%20Website/Tims%20Car/DSCF0673.jpg
It's a 1967 Honda S800 coupe (Has the live axle instead of independent chain drive rear).
Importantly, it has had regular use all of its life, and as such seems to be in good driveable condition.
It makes a hilarious racket all the way to redline but always seems to be under the speed limit. I'm hoping it will be relatively economical to run as a weekend car around town.
I bought the car off a lovely old couple up near Birmingham. The previous owner had owned one in the 60's and this was his 2nd model that he has owned for the last decade or so.
Apparently the UK didn't really see any official S600's, this is an early model S800 with none of the americanised
features of the S800M.
It has been kept registered and drive regularly by the previous owner to visit his son playing cricket out in the counties every weekend. He rebuilt the engine himself a few years ago and is remarkably clean inside and out.
Most of the S800's I have seen for sale in england have been complete projects and non running.
The other mega bonus was the previous owner was not sure how to use the internet and had priced it below market value.
Driving the car is quite interesting.
It is hilariously small, but actually very spacious inside.
It feels pretty japanese when you get in. so things are slightly tinny sounding, but overall it feels better engineered than the 240z. Some higher quality materials in the interior and cool features like adjustable double hood struts and a spring loaded metal motorcycle filler cap [pics later].
Surprisingly for such a small engine, you can drive around under 4000rpm very easily. Things are relatively civil and although there is plenty of noise, it is nothing compared to when you step on the throttle.
Because you are sitting so low, and the individual carbies make a huge induction noise, you feel like you are going like the £%!!%£ clappers, however you are probably only just reaching the speedlimit.
On the motorway, anything over 70mph seems to cause the car to vibrate itself to death(this might be just an issue of tuning and alignment however).
Refreshingly, it seems to receive generally positive reaction from the public, and most people laugh and wave.
Here are some more terrible pics of the Honda.(the gf unfortunately is a fan of hipstamatic).

The S800 had slightly less luxurious interior compared to S600- i.e faux wood steering wheel, tacho goes to 11,000

We had a crazy 30+degree summers day which meant it was pretty damn hot inside the car.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5277/5885363611_57eed9f2d9.jpg
Plan is hopefully to do nothing and keep it running as a weekend 'trip to the countryside' vehicle.
I might try and clean up the interior a bit more and reupholster the seats myself. I'm not such a big fan of the wheels, but they have a weird PCD and size so replacements may be difficult
Also I will try to ignore the Keihin FCR's and adjustable coilovers on ebay..

There is also a 5 piece (supposingly genuine) G nose that has been sitting in the garage for about 5 years doing nothing but collecting dust, so I bought some light covers to go with it.
holy moley. if its genuine. thatd be worth huge bucks $$$$$
ps. any more specs on your engine?
The engine is bored out to 2.9, has custom internals, improved oil galleries, what appears to be a very 'big' camshaft (should sound cool at least), and apparently built for high top end power with not much fark given for daily driveability.
I think the PO's power claim is a bit optimistic but anything over 140kw would be nice!
The plan at the moment is to put it into a friends 260z dedicated track car.
I'd like to keep the 240z relatively driveable and am actually collecting bits to put the interior back together.
I think for my car a responsive engine less than 250hp with triple carbs with a semi lightweight chassis would yield the most smile factor. Anything over that and things start becoming less reliable, need more reinforcement etc.
Anyhow, it's taken 2 years just to get an ECU, fix various fittings and wire injectors- so it'll probably still take an equally long time to get everything running.

In other news I am loving the S800!

Just serviced it yesterday and installed a new coil and it's revving a lot nicer to 9000+ now.
I had a slight 'oh shit' moment during the service when I overtorqued one of the bolts holding the oil filter on(it has an annoying metal cover over the oil filter instead of a modern spin on element). I had terrible visions of the thread in the alloy block being stripped but thankfully this wasn't the case and the remaining bolt came out easily.
The previous weekend I went to visit a fellow Honda s800 club member who was going to help me make sure the keihin carbs were in tune.
He had three sheds full of Honda s800 parts, and I ended up carting away a spare dashboard, seat and armrest for pretty much nothing (all fits in the generous boot!).
I'm going to try my hand at doing some upholstery work.
I also went for a ride in his megaquirt ITB s800. Great fun, although I think I will keep mine relatively stock for now.
Babalouie, I've been a member on that forum for a while now but been too lazy to post- shall do one when I get some better photos.
I've been driving the Honda quite a lot. It has broken down a few times but nothing too frustrating so far, mainly 40 year old wiring and electrical systems. I'm now relatively fluent in the language of points and ignition coils.
Thought I would also foolishly try my hand at doing up the interior. Bought some lovely Connolly leather and have started off retrimming the armrest. I'm a bit wary it will end up looking terrible since I am handsewing everything but so far it is coming together ok. There are no external stitches on the console so mistakes won't be too apparent. It should also be relatively strong as I am using lock stitches which are normally reserved for sewing knife sheaths and other more heavy duty items(only doing this as they were the most common tutorial on youtube!)

Went to the Goodwood Revival- genuinely amazing event. Tweed outfits + a pitlane full of unobtainable cars trading metal + spitfires flying past in low formation = day long orgasms.
http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2011/10/2011-goodwood-revival-temple-of.htmlThis trophy was probably my favourite- great contrast of vehicles with four wheel drifts galore.
Will definitely be back next year!
Also recently had the pleasure of borrowing a 550 Maranello WSR for a weekend.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/4536/550wsr2.jpg
^ not the same car-but basically they all look the same.
The WSR is pretty much a standard 550 but with a half cage, handling pack, sports seats, alcantara bits and 4 point racing harnesses(annoying).
I drove the Honda to pick it up which is about as different to the 550 as you can get. The Honda feels like a chuckable sardine can with a peaky engine. The Ferrari feels almost double the width and everything feels meaty and definite.
It is surprisingly quiet and calm inside, an absolute weapon on the motorway. I've never thought about the benefits of a quality drivers footrest previously, but there is a might fine one in the 550.
It is rock solid and very comfortable. It isn't a 'jesus christ here comes the power' sort of car, but a very smooth gradual crescendo of speed.
At first it is disappointing to not have an open piped v12 screaming everytime you plant the throttle, but I quite liked the more subtle rapidness of it.
Worst part? filling it up is a tearjerkingly expensive £120 (which is about 50 aussie dollars these days) and it doesnt last very long!
I loved it, it's one of those cars that I can see growing old gracefully and becoming very desirable.
Unfortunately no progress on Z, but I am back in December and have just booked a place at the circuit club day.
Prepping for Saturdays circuit club day.

Test fitting G Nose with Type A front spoiler. The fitment is suprisingly spot on- yet more clues that perhaps it is somewhat original- or at least a very good replica piece.
