Parking outdoors in the carpark across the library looks pretty safe in the day-time. Plenty of people walking past. But the ground in there is horrible if you have a lowered car

see last paragraph of my rant

my LONG rant about the bullsh*t they call uni.

In the dictionary, "university" is described as "an educational institution designed for instruction, examination, or both, of students in many branches of advanced learning". To make this statement true, instruction would actually need to be given. It would really help if ANY of the tutors/lecturers could speak English properly. Maybe it is the stereotype that The best Engineer's are usually German or of some other sort of European that UTS decided to hire staff that don't seem to be able to speak english properly. You would think that being an institution of "advanced learning" that they would hire teachers who were able to teach so that students can "learn". But apparently having a degree in whatever you are teaching is enough to become a lecturer/tutor even without a teaching degree [no, this is not an exaggeration but very much a fact]. These so-called 'teachers' not only are incapable of edifying students in anyway, they actually think that bragging about their failure to teach in attempts to intimidate students about studying hard and coming to lectures. Not only does "about 1/3 of this lecture hall of 300 is a repeat student" not subdue me, instead it emphasizes their inability to teach. They boast about this program called "UPASS" where students teach students and show how many of the passing students attended this program. This just highlights that the students tend to teach as well or even, better than the actual teachers/lecturers even though they have no actual teaching degree or qualification. But then again, nor do the teachers. I guess being able to speak english DOES help [WOW what a surprise].

Where should I start with this Bullshit timetable system they have put together...
Well being uni students and all, the university seems to provide the "privilege" of allowing students to pick majority of their own classes/lecture times which I have found to be good, in theory. Majoring in mechanical engineering, there a few subjects which overlap with other branches of engineering. But because of that, the more convenient times are always filled up first. However, this University of TECHNOLOGY" seems to be well rather clueless about how to set up a timetable system that works. Half my classes didn't show up on my timetable and it took about 30mins in the que at the single aisle-d "student services desk" to get the response of "just go to them anyway". I later realize if I do attend all the classes I am suppose to even though they do not appear on my timetable, I have a class that overlaps. That class has 3 times which it is run, monday, wed and friday. If i attend monday or wednesday then I would miss out on parts of my lectures so I had to [in theory] attend friday's tutorial. But of course, because it was at a convenient time slot, it was already full. This was one of the shared subjects while my lectures weren't. So you would think that UTS would make the initiative to prioritize who gets first choice of those classes. But apparently that would be too difficult for a "university of technology" so they left it at first come first serve. I didn't seem to be the only one with this issue as I got about 1-2 dozen emails a DAY asking if anyone could swap due to overlaps. Taking an initiative myself, I emailed the "head of mechanical engineering" who happened to also be the teacher of the tutorial that was overlapping with my class. Being the "head" you would think he has some control over the subjects that were compulsory for HIS students to attend, but apparently that was just a title. Not only was he unable to change people around so that those who NEED to be in the friday class could be there, his solution was "leave the lecture early and come to the tutorial late" stating that he had already mentioned it to the lecturer who said that the material in lectures "weren't important" as long as i attend the tutorial. What then is the point in attending ANY lectures? The "head of mechanical engineering" also decides to add at the end of the email "please try to cause the least disruption possible when leaving and entering classes". I did not pay a stupid amount of money per year so I could miss out on material in class because the uni can't get a timetable system that works. Maybe more students would pass the subjects if they were actually able to attend classes. Now that it is oh-so-late in the semester, they made it so that you can no longer change your classes so basically if your timetable is screwed you must live with it for half a year.

Conclusion: Uni is a misleading, over-exaggerated definition of the word "bull shit" that is designed so that they can make stupid amounts of money so they can hire teachers with no actual teaching degree so that the students will continue to fail and thus continue to pay.

Summary:

Something about the University of TECHNOLOGY having shit all technology in regards to their timetable system and should have a better system for getting the students into a class and that the lecturer or head or whoever it was couldnt give a rats arse about the situation.

thats just my take

see last paragraph of my rant

my LONG rant about the bullsh*t they call uni.

Yeah, the system is designed so in theory IF you pass everything, you'll be fine cause everything will fit like a jig saw puzzle. However fail even one subject and your courses will clash etc...

First come, first served...

They want to give you choice (Welcome to a democratic country, how's it make you feel now? lol) but they have restrictions in class sizes not to mention they cater for how many people outside of your degree? Guess they can't give you all you want, give and take, thats it =|

Half the classes are auto-assigned anyway so you would think they would auto assign the classes that people NEED to be in. But I guess that's too complicated for them
I'm only in my first semester and the timetable is already messed up.

This is UTS. Its all DIY. theres no one thats going to call your name out and hand you a personalised timetable.
you'll get used to it.
enrolment and tutorial/lab selection starts up 6 weeks before week 1, so next time, get in quick before the spots get taken up. if your smart, u can reduce the amount of days your at uni by setting aside a few hours and choosing specific subjects.
and you'll learn you don't need to always be at class to get good marks;)

i was at uni for 4 days in my first semester and got over it.. you just do it, it's your first year, you will come across problems, you will screw up your timetable coz you didnt get the slots you wanted and you will realise that some subjects werent worth the effort of getting up at 6:30am for.

HOWEVER, uni is an experience, one that isnt spoon fed. The lecturers did the same study as you AND more to get to where they are and have other professions along with that, so really, im sure they are paid the right amount for trying to teach you some decent material... it's up to the students and whether or not they are willing to put the effort in or have a nap during lectures.

So why are they allowed to run the course (and a fairly popular one at that) when they won't even allow students a fair amount of contact hours on its subjects due to clashes? It's the first time I've heard of timetabling screwups this bad in any uni.

once you modify the course plan due to taking different subjects each semester it is the students problem and they need to mix and match in order to get no clashes.
eg. if you want to do a 2nd subject with a 4th year subject how can you say the uni is liable for clashes.

Later years (at work) you will be lucky if anyone gave you line by line instructions... Rarely you will be spoon fed, or received proper instructions...

You don't really have to turn up to uni, unless if it is compulsory attendance (like marking and all). Most of the things can be self-learn...

First year of uni is definitely different, but don't let that spoil the rest of the uni experience...

That post was way too long... But later the timetable is much better... For me, two days of uni... and five days of weekend...

Surely work won't give ya five days of weekend... ;)

About the timetable, yeah that's really BS, I remember wasting a whole week setting up the whole timetable thing...

Yeah I get that, thing is Carmen is doing standard first year mech eng courses and everything was auto-allocated AFAIK. She had no say over which subjects to do, yet the uni still can't allocate adequate resources to make it work for her. I'd be pissed too in that situation.

Can anyone recommend me a place to apply for my first engineering internship?

I'm doing a Mechanical Engineering major and just wanted to broaden my horizons... anyone have or heard of good places?

And yes.. I know that I took my time doing this first internship in my 4th year.. I just didn't realise how important it was and I really wanted to get a steady focus on passing every subject..

Wow, how come UTS didn't come down on you since they say you should complete your internship before completing 87 CP (or something).

Oh and.. I'm pretty sure Thales has mechanical internships.

I have been back at uni for a whole 2 hours and I hate it already. ---- you Eng Communication!

If you hate it, why go?
Couldn't there be something else at Uni you could study that didn't make you hate it?

Manufacturing companies require mechanical engineers.
Cochlear or ResMed for the top manufacturing companies in AUS, try them.

aaron look up nautitech manufacturing services and nautitech consulting

they are two different companies (they split)

manufacturing designs builds and r&d mining equipment. one of their top selling products is a methane system used on mining machinery.

consulting is where you'd like to go though (seeing that your on this site), they work on transmissions and such and have won man contracts with big manufacturers, like GM, VW and FERRARI :) hope this helps.

both of them are small businesses and they are usually looking for interns there last time i was there.

i worked there on my first intern in 2006 at manufacturing! they're located in castle hill

lol i started this year ... 1st year engineering mechatronics ftw =P

i was combining with international studies but dropped ittt..

any tips on the end of semester exams for...

physical modelling..math modelling and intro to mech?

OVTEC
08-05-09, 12:11 AM
haha math modelling 1 is pretty simple, physical modelling is multiple choice so not too hard, intro to mech - never done it

im doing international studies and im going to japan next year, why did you drop intl studies?

TONTON
08-05-09, 12:29 PM
I dropped it because i felt like doing masters in that time spent on the extra course...

But it doesnt matter really because im going to go on exchange later on... maybe 3rd year?

OVTEC
08-05-09, 12:56 PM
cool cool, where do you plan on going?

TONTON
08-05-09, 02:44 PM
Probably Japan? lol... typical

Or maybe somewhere in europe.

And does the course get better after the first semester? Because everyone seems to do the same course and hasnt really specialised into any particular fields yet...

OVTEC
08-05-09, 04:36 PM
yea first year most students do the same subjects its only in the 2nd year that people start branching off into subjects more dedicated to their degree

i usually just parked at market city, but i only drove when i was at uni for the whole day, if not it wasnt worth it, i never parked at broadway since i cbb walking, it was always market city for me, closer to UTS and i didnt mind if it was $12 since my train ticket would of been half of that but it was worth it :)

TONTON
10-05-09, 04:10 PM
Ahh okay fair enough then... but broadway = 5min walk... lol i used to think it was far until i actually walked there from UTS.

Anyways haha the 30% thing that you failed.. was that the end of semester report + presentation? ECG groups? etc etc?

If so thats like on thursday for me lol, but my groups pretty serious so i reckon ill atleast pass

anyone got past papers for physical modelling? math modelling? intro to mech?

They are all on the library website.

first year 1st semester is easy.. but wait for maths mod 2, and fundamentals of mech.. failed them both :(

currently on internship, so assuming you pass maths mod 1 this semester, ill be seeing you in MM2 next semester :P

TONTON
27-05-09, 06:01 PM
ahh sweet thanks mate,

and yeah math mod 1 = death

so i reckon math mod 2 would be even worse :(

got any tips to study?

xolent
27-05-09, 06:11 PM
maths mod 1 and 2 are easy

fundamentals are easy also...the quizes are exactly the same as the inclass exercises lol

tips to study? don't go on jdmst?

you should realllllllllllllyyyyyyy focus your energy on psychical modelling, if you didn't study it in high school. they teach you apples in the lectures, and ask you about bananas in the tests!

i got 48 first time round and had to do a supp test!

TONTON
27-05-09, 07:05 PM
dammit, yeah im relearning physical modelling lol.

any tips on studying for that? do lots of past papers or....read?

and also dont you need like 40% only to pass?

on my assessments im sitting on like 40% and havent done the finals yet... ( june 10)

BU93YE
27-05-09, 07:12 PM
physical modelling was a joke.

they make it all sound soooo hard, and then the final exam ends up being all multiple choice, with questions similar to Yr11.

And yeh, some subjects only require 40% overall to pass, however, they also require a pass in the final exam to pass overall. So even if your sitting on say 70%, and you fail the finals by 1 mark, you fail the subject.

xolent
27-05-09, 07:52 PM
umm i dont even remember anything--sorry. shows how USELESS psychical modelling is. i remember i had to carry around a big massive textbook the size of a telephone book. fucked up my back i remember! honestly if i had that exam tomorrow i would dead set fail.

i would study on the last night for intro to mech. if you fail that then you should reconsider your future lolol just kidding! just study your forces and equilibrium and shit from what i remember....i dont remember too much on intro to mech. i'm doing civil now :S

minix3
27-05-09, 10:38 PM
Man Physics was BS. The entire final exam is multiple choice with no working and a 40% pass.
MathMod is easy also, just do lots of textbook questions.
Wait til you do IEE. Fuck I hate that subject.

xolent
27-05-09, 11:04 PM
IEE and EMA was the reason why i bailed out on mech eng and chose civil lawl

didn't attempt them yet but hearing people fail ema and not being able to get their degrees because they couldnt pass EMA overwhelmed me lol

OVTEC
27-05-09, 11:15 PM
yea physical modelling was easy as hell, 40 mulitple choice questions

math mod 1&2 are easy, im doing maths for physical sciences and thats a BITCH!

TONTON
27-05-09, 11:20 PM
lol ive calculated that i only need 40% to pass in physical modelling

so are you sure theres 40MC?

True that..
electronics and circuits sounds like a breeze compared to when i completed it 5 years ago.

although circuit analysis is probably still the hardest engineering subject. poor mofo's that have to do that

Yeah I repeated intro to mech this sem since I fucked it last year since Dad was in hospital a day before the final exams. Luckily it means I don't need to redo the assignments.

Unless they have changed the exam, it's 40 MC questions.

It's apparently the 2nd hardest subject in UTS.

IEE had an average of 0.8 out of 5 for the quizzes. And the annoying thing is that for some of the quiz's/pracs, you get marked in components, but can only either get 100% or 0.
