ZEDS!
I love the original Z.
Here's a couple from my club (http://www.ndsoc.com.au)
This one belongs to the club president. I've yet to see it in action, but I've heard it and it sounds awesome!

The shopping list down the side is pretty tastefully done too. I'd almost be happy to run a list too if I colour coded it to the body like he's done.
He's also custom fitted a 240sx (Basically a 180sx from what I know) dash and centre console. I prefer the original dash from the 240/260z, but I can't diss what he's done. Looks bloody great.

Man that white one with the mountain backdrop is so farken hot ..........
it outlines the best angle of the original z in my oppnion
Yeah, that white one got totalled heh.

Best thread eva. It has made my day. :D
so hot and that sr one is amazing.
I'm trying to convince dad of building one with a GTR engine for when he retires.

That last Zed is hott! The chick standing next to it is even hotter! more pics pls.
I have a soft spot for these cars. There is an old guy 70yrs+ in my area that has one in racing red with a big number on the side and a stripe. Looks like an ex-targa tassie car or somthing. When ever he drives it he has this driving cap on whilst smoking an old pipe. I wanna get old in style like that 8)
Haha, obviously a total legend!

This car will soon be a bmw v12 powered 250gto replica.
The black GTO in the start of vanilla sky, is actually a Z.

If there's one thing I hate its butchering cars to make replicas of nice cars, especially when the donor car is hot.
Like the NSX someone in Japan turned into an F40. Why!?!?! The NSX is an awesome machine.
Sure, if you're going to hack up a VW Beetle to make a 959 Replica that's one thing, but not a good car!
The nsx--> F40: I agree was the biggest waste of money since Waterworld. Not only did it look fake and not have any extra go, it must have taken countless hours of blood sweat and tears to get it there!
The 240z > 250gto? I'm less inclined to not see the point there!
The 240z in america was a huge success and as a result they can be relatively inexpensive. You can pick up rusty unloved examples for not much money at all.Finding a genuine ferrari 250gto is nigh on impossible even if you do have spare couple of million burning a hole in your pocket.
In addition to this, if you did own a genuine 250gto you would generally be too scared to drive it like it was meant to be driven.
So couple this:
* 1 grand for the base car
* cheap as chips bmw v12 base engine which most sane people don't want to touch with a 20 foot pole(free!). The owner of the Z in the pic, has given it dry sumping, ITB's, motec
* velo rossa GTO bodykit and bodywork- give yourself 10-15grand for an immaculate job.
If you built everything with no expense spared you would still be up 100-200 aussie grand at the most(i'm being generous there).
In the end you would be left with a damn interesting and driveable car which you would have at least a chance of parts replacement or repairability on the day you do crash it. Unlike the nsx to f40 conversion, the 240z CAN look damn good as a GTO ( as shown in the movies!)
That being said, i personally would spend my money on other things. e.g. 240Z-R
http://www.yatsuzaka.com/gallery/PC/PHOTO/NR-S30Z.JPG
:p
how would u register it? recently i have developed a soft spot for a vintage cars. The 250gto is absolutely hot, i would own a replica any day, as long as its reliable :P
some jdm old school from TAS.

This is a $20,000 OS Giken L series Twin cam crossflow head. (no exaggeration on price! just the freakin head!).
The engine itself puts out somewhere close to 240hp from 1.8litres.
Not that special when compared to say the current Honda K series and F20 engines etc, but it still gives anyone into vintage race parts a boner.
Oh and if you want reliability with old school,
try this 'skyline':
http://www.tunerzine.com/coverage/2005/shows/TAS05/images/tas5.jpg
I've got several hundred more MB of japanese vintage motorsports stuff, but its not online. :(
If anyone is interested in this Zed stuff for real, the Datsun Zed nationals are at wakefield next weekend. There will also be two KGC10 GT-X Skylines present.
http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=7580
I'm a big fan of the Prince Skyline, but this is the Zed Thread cuz. ;)
oh yeh forgot bout that.
my excuse is that the skyline is the meathead older brother of the fairlady.
The 510 is something like the retarded nephew.
:p
*cough* except for the 510 above, with the tc16.... I just found an article about it on the OS giken site. It revs to 10,500 rpm and came first in a recent nostalgic car race in Japan (one of the runners up was none other than the 300hp nissan works 240z-r pictured above!)
to cut a long story short:
os giken worker finds damaged components of the infamous twin cam L series head in back of workshop during a cleanup.
Asks boss if he can try and fix these parts and build the complete engine.
Boss says ok, worker pieces engine together by hand after work over many months.
Puts engine in car.
Drives car and finds the engine very streetable.
Enters nostalgic car race, beats everyone easily and embarrasses the nissan works team.

There are two videos on this site.
and here is another pic of a Z to make up for it:
http://s-garage.hp.infoseek.co.jp/s30-2.jpg
Haha, those videos were awesome!
Got any links to Z vids?
GODDAMN this has got to stop
I have a whole bunch of Z stuff, but it's all in my harddrive or on vcd etc.
One of my fave clips is a Hot Version episode where Keiichi Tsuchiya takes the Spirit Garage S30z (the white flared monster 2 posts above) around a track for a few laps.
He becomes quite overcome with emotion...
anyhow try yahoo video search:
http://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?p=240z&ei=UTF-8&fr=FP-tab-vid-t&fl=0&x=wrt&vm=p
the first few are the darius Z ones.
whoop.
found some whilst I was typing:

You can definitely spot which skyline is a real GTR in the 2nd video. Nothing like the high pitched roar of the S20.

is that on the road yet?
i should hope so. it's been a while since those pics were taken.
Well, my love for the Z has been reborn. In true manga fashion, I'm going to find a S30Z that needs work, and then I'm going to do as much of the work myself as I can. Ideally I'd like to get an RB engine into it, but the first priority is to get the body and interior into tiptop shape. Once that's done, I'll focus on the performance.
Ungh, so pumped. I've always loved these things.

The 240 with the Sakuras was damn porn,so was the KPGC on the 2nd page.Nice pics all!
im loathe to say this, but my Z might be for sale at the end of the year. I'll be heading overseas to work for a few years and am currently renting a garage...
Ah that's a real shame to hear man, it's always a sad realisation when you have to make a sacrifice like that!
It's probably worth more than I've got available to spend (and I'm looking at a project car to work on from scratch), but I'd love to see some pics of your car if you've got some or posted some up already?

when is it going to start?
Good luck with project van, it shall be a looong and windy road- i recommend you get a complete car rather than a rolling shell. my camera is still fubar'd at anything other than macro zoom so no pics currently.

Ahahaha fo' sho!
I like this one, kind of a burnt orange/brown. Even the shopping list is somewhat tastefully done, not standing out too much.
Not a massive fan of the rim choice though, doesn't really suit the car in my book.

Have I posted this one? This beauty belongs to Will, a Canadian dude living down here in Melbourne. We went to Tafe together, though I've only had the pleasure of riding in this Z once haha. It is damn, damn nice though. Running an RB20DETT (or single turbo? I forget...). So damn nice.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y38/vinnie320/will.jpg
I remember Will :) When he bought it ... it has a RB20nics motor .... I think it was controlled by a Microtech, or or Haltech .. im pretty sure it wasnt using a standard ecu. I know he fitted a newer/bigger turbo not long after he bought it, but cant remember what type ... may of been one of an ECCS engine. I know he was thinking about upgrading to a ECCS motor, or an RB25 ... but i have no idea .... i havent seen him for about 3-4y :)
Yeah, it's been a good couple of years since I've seen him too! I sent him a message on the MCCR forums earlier this year, and then forgot all about it haha. I just logged in a minute ago and found his reply heh. Might give him a call and see what he and his Z have been up to!

Damn right!
Here's an RB26 powered Z from Brisbane, with 329kw at the wheels. He's aiming for 487rwkw once he gets his RB30/26 hybrid finished.
Personally I don't like the colour or the choice of wheels (although they are carbon fibre!), but I can't fault the guy's dedication!

awesome thread... i think everyone now wants one of these :)
Haha yeah, and with the upcoming Wangan Midnight anime, the price of these is going to skyrocket. They're quite expensive as it is, and now it's just going to be heeeaps more. They're worth it, but it means the chances of me getting one are a lot slimmer now!
SR20 powered 240Z for sale in the US, Buy Now price of US$15,000 and worth every penny. Quite surprised the bids are only at US10k at the moment!

I have a love-hate relationship with this thread, haha. Sometimes I wish I hadn't started it! To be staring at my dream car all the time, and not actually owning one, ack! And to know that it'll probably be at least a year before I can even consider getting one, gah! Haha.

van...maybe you should get yourself a S30 instead of a Galant.
Haha. It's a matter of money and practicality. I could get an S30Z for between 6000 to 15000k depending on condition, but in order to achieve the level I'd want it to be at, it'd take thousands of dollars more.
I will get one eventually.
I have to confess - and I hate to say this after the big hoo-hah I made about getting a VR4 - I'm very tempted to take a different path. To just keep my shitbox Camry as my daily driver, and once I can afford it, get an S30Z as my pride and joy rather than a VR4. I dunno.

I'd say get the car you really want. If that means driving a shitbox Jap car to save many to get that car, then go for it. So if driving that Camry means you will be able to get your S30 quicker, then go for it.
Remember to be realistic as well man.

I had a mate who restored a couple of 240Zs and having seen what needs to be done, I reckon it's one of those cars where, for every $1000 you save on purchase price you spend $3000 more later on work that needs to be done.
So given their propensity to rust, I would say pay thru the nose, etc and purchase the very, very best one you can afford, one that doesn't need any bodywork. If a $15k one doesn't answer to that description, then buy a $20k one :D
But...have you driven one yet? :)

absolutely babs.
Parts for these cars are notoriously expensive, compared to how much the cars are actually worth... This is a sign that they're appreciating
The trouble in Aus is that it is very hard to find a very good one. US it's not a problem - if you've got the cash you can have the car. Here you sorta have to just wait until one comes up for sale, and then try to beat the rush.
I just hope if you do buy one van you at least get one that's already been irreversibly modified. I hate to think of yet another good original Z butchered :(

Oh man. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that one was restored by The Healey Factory, out in Ringwood. Pretty sure I saw it for sale for around 15k on CarSales.com.au earlier in the year... Surprised it didn't sell! But then again, maybe it's a completely different car, and the one I'm thinking of did sell. Tough to say, haha.
Either way, that is damn nice. Wish I could afford a loan right now!
yeah i know what you mean van...
considering there is also a number of falcon GT's as well i think most of the attention would be on those cars...
i reckon you could get it for about $8k and no reserve means that it will be sold on the night...
Yeah, too bad I've gone back to fulltime study and can't possibly afford it, haha.

Love these cars more and more.
Might they be stylish enough to get exchanged with a WRX?
Depends on what you want it for, I reckon. I don't want one to track it, I just want it because it's a beautiful car. I'd just be driving it around normally, not tracking it and so forth.
That said, there are no shortage of people who track their S30s!

I am just a bit too cowardly to get a 30 year old car...
I fear they will create a massive black hole inside my wallet...
I think that's a pretty justified fear, haha.
Depends on the kind of person you are! As Babalouie has said many times, the more you spend on the purchase, the less you'll need to spend on restoration work. And if you don't need to spend anything/much on restoration, it then comes down to how you want to modify it. And let's be realistic, modifying a WRX or a Supra or a Skyline is no less common and expensive than modifying an S30.
If you're satisfied with the S30 in stock form (with perhaps some new wheels and sussy and exhaust), and it's not your daily driver, then you're all set. Yeah you'll have maintenance to think about, but I don't think that'd be any more or less expensive than maintaining your WRX. And if it is more, I don't think it'd be by much.
It shouldn't be your daily driver, that's for sure!
Omawari_San
03-06-07, 10:49 AM
Daily driver is a 3-cylinder-993ccm-race-engined-swift :)
So what ever I do, buying an other car or keep the present its only a car for sunny sundays and will never see a raindrop.
Well there you go then!
The WRX will be faster and will handle better, but that's just a given. So if you can handle taking an older car instead of a modern car, then it's all good.
It's always a tradeoff.

The difference between these cars and say, a WRX, is that you have to LIVE this. They rust, they smell and have been driven "spiritly" for more than 30 years. Also hard to drive by today's standards.
They are not expensive to maintain, BUT you can be guaranteed to have something to work on every weekend. HERE is where the cost of owning a classic comes in. It's TIME. When you start to modify things it can consume your life. Not only working on it but researching. Got a dull rear tail light lense on your wrx? Easy, just buy a new one. Got a crack in your 240Z tail light........ good luck to you.
But this is the attraction. It's the challenge.

I agree....and you either relish the challenge or you don't. And it's true that on old cars the list of things-to-fix really can be never ending.
For example, the front windows on the Luce clunk and rattle when they go up and down. The issue is that the plastic guide wheels that travel along the window regulator tracks have disintegrated, so it's all rattly metal on metal. To fix it, I'll take out the window and regulators, buy a block of nylon from a plastics supplier, have it machined to the shape of a wheel, drill out the centres, press in a crushtube, then figure out how to take apart the old regulator to insert the new fabricated wheels.
This is gonna take quite a bit of time and many lunchtimes of driving around to organise, and it is only one of the many, many little jobs you end up doing on an old car to make it as good as new.....and if you would rather be playing video games than doing mundane restoration like this, then an old car ain't for you :D

It looks like it's had a pretty shoddy blowover spray in white at some point (overspray on the rubbers) so the big unknown is what ferric evil lurks under that chalky paint...for all you know that paint is actually structural and the metal underneath is no good at all :D

Yeah but that old S30 might be years away from being in a driveable condition. So if you had any plans of cruising around in it then you gotta be patient :D
Sado-Kun
03-06-07, 05:43 PM
Yeah, thats why I'd recommend it more as a second S30. Meaning after you already have a nice, mint condition S30 that you love.
Bringing classic's back from the dead always seemed like a fun and for filling thing for me. I got a lot of patients. If there's a project that interests me, I could go at it for days on end, with only as a break...and sleep.
Yeah, I'm much the same way. But it's a good point, that buying it as a second S30 would be the wiser option, if one's in a position to do that!
Babalouie
03-06-07, 05:49 PM
Well to be honest, unless you bought a Zed whose restoration was someone's life's work, even your mint S30 will need work, so it's not like you ever have one car that's "finished" enough that you can focus 100% on the beater one :D

Rull of thumb when buying a old car is to buy someones money pitt. Easy rule not often followed that can save you a motsa!.
Obviously it's a waiting game but one well worth hanging in there for.
Entry level price into a S30 platform these days seem to range around the 7-9K mark. You could easily take that up to 15K with paint job, suspension, bits and pieces. Whilest you can still find nice ones going for just under $13K mark. Thats with only 6 months experience with these cars so im no expert.

As in..."a money pit that has had tons of money thrown into it already" :D
Reminds me of something Jay Leno wrote once. He said....when you go and buy a car, you don't go to a fancy dealership with pretty secretaries and marble floors, etc. You go to a guy who's house is falling down, his wife and kids are all dressed in rags, but he's too busy writing cheques to upkeep his car. THAT'S the car you want to buy! :D :D

You got me. I try to get a Haynes Repair Manual for 240Z on ebay at the moment.
Right now I am waiting for a reply from the netherlands and more pictures from the Z I posted before.
But I still have doubts....:???: :???:
I've only seen a few Z's for sale that have been done balls out properly.
One of them sold in Aus recently for 45g, and there was still more that could be done to 'improve' it.
Another one was for sale in the states for 30gUS, and ended up being parted out.
It's definitely a lifetime commitment dude.
Just say No hahahah.
Btw, if you just want the look and dont care about the driving expeerience, it still ends up costing a crapload.
e.g.
If you like the look of the ZG flares they are relatively cheap at about 250$.
But then you need the right wheels to fill in the guards. This means some fat low offset wheels that noone really sells anymore- bank on at least 2000 possibly with rubber.
Then you realise the ride height is all wrong. To do things properly you ideally need coilovers if you still want the car to handle properly. Sky's the limit here but at the minimum another 1200. If you don't want the alignment all out of whack you also need to look into camber adjustment, bump steer spacers, adjustable control arms.
Then when you have the car sitting nicely, you realise the wheels rub, and thus begins the painful process of cutting the rear arches and rolling the fronts.
And then finally you have a car that you can put the ZG flares on properly :)
Well said man, well said.
Back on track, we are after all in the gallery forum, not the discussion forum you tits! ;)

Hey, that's true. But I was under the impression that the used car market over there is/was really cheap.
My dad had a mate that use to privately import Ferrari's, Masserati's and the like from the UK in the early 80s. He made such a big profit.
Even offered my dad a Countach at some ridiculous price. I still give my father shit for not buying it. I tell ya. So damn cheap compared to the approx $200k ppl want now. I guess dad didn't have the money back then. BUT WHO CARES!!! COUNTACH! lol

Why is it that shows like "Overhaulin'" make the whole, take an old beat up classic and turn it into a show car, look so easy and cheap?
But it isn't cheap....they get tons of sponsorship, so the US$15,000 crate motors and US$2500 transmissions they put in the cars are free....and when you add up what it would cost to have 20 fabricators working 18hrs a day for a week, and 10 panelbeaters working around the clock for 3 days, I think you'll find that the cost gets up there....3000 man hours times say a labour rate of US$50/hr? :D
Austin Hoke's Z (the blue one that Wilch showed) didn't cost a massive amount, because he did the majority of work himself. What it cost - and this is what Alfadog mentioned - is time, lots of time. The only other cost was materials, and a few things he couldn't do himself, but he really did do the very vast majority of the work himself. So if you've got the time and the know-how, it's not necessarily a massively *priced* job. Still, prepare yourself for that possibility!

The price of restoring one of these beauties is going to give me nightmares...im already pretty scared at the moment, and I never even consider getting one...dam~
average rice of a Z in england- is 5000 pounds and up(for average condition).
However, the majority of Z's for sale are absolute beaters meaning that the owner should probably pay you to take it off their hands. Hence they rarely sell.
The one nice Z I saw went for 13000 pounds within 2 days of posting on pistonheads. It was a very mild tune samuri car in brilliant condition.
Ive seen a few people actually import z's from America, as it is much cheaper over there, less rust, and it is quite easy to register cars older than 10 years old. hence why you see full on rally cars etc with numberplates. Actually someone imported ben ellis's old 260z with 1jzgte here and it regularly runs the santa pod drag strip.
On the other hand, european 2nd hand cars are cheap as cheaps here.
e39 m5: 10000 pounds
e46 m3: 15000-20000 pounds
e36 m3: seen as low as 4000 pounds
lotus elise: 9000
Works built renault clio cup car 197: 20000 pounds (drool)
too much choice, too little time/money.
As a rough guide as to how far you can go with a Z budget,
I got quoted some prices for a turnkey 240z built by Stewart Wilkins Rallying.
This will be to the same spec as the cars that won the East African Safari Rally twice- (beating out works ford escorts, tuthills porsches etc).
$180,000 which includes
Engine- $30000. (includes billet crankshaft worth 6g, HP is not that impressive either, but it revs like no other L series I've seen).
Suspension- $18000- proflex monster 60mm
And the usual 100's of manhours it takes to prep the chassis etc.
The scarier thing is the safari cars are limited to quite simple modifications (carbs only, mostly period mods), so there is scope to go even crazier if you want to build an all out example with modern gadgets like efi.
I did a scary excel worksheet of a 'give no fark' budget for my Z and it ended up pretty close to 150 grand.
:S
oh and before Van gets pissed here is an interesting Z shot to balance out my 3 posts of non pic material.

You mean turkey? You never should buy a car from turkey. Normaly the roads are bad there, maintance is something people usually don't do and the way of driving there leaves its marks on the cars.
Haha nah, "turnkey" (turn key) means they build it up for you, sourcing the parts, doing all the work, organising everything, so that it's ready for immediate use. The complete package. All you have to do when you pick it up is turn the key, start it up, and drive it away. Unless it's a race car, then you put it on a trailer and tow it away haha. You get my point though!

ONARUN is looking impressive! Aus represent!
So just how much would a classic Zed in decent running condition set you back? Not perfect showroom condition...but something that will make a good reliable base for a project?
Expect to pay anywhere from 13-15k for one that's hopefully had the good majority of metal work done to it. There'd still be plenty of niggly little things to sort out, but the metal work is the main thing you really want to have sorted out!
KOnigg rewinds on that white one.

That's the ZG nose, yeah.
So was it a separate model, just optional, or what?
optional for racing... i personally think the ZG nose if fugly...
It was a factory option for racing, yeah. And I agree with Xero, it's not especially becoming. Depends on the look you're going for though. The open nose is definitely a lot more... aggressive? I do prefer that!

aha, fair enough. cheers for that.
A bit more info:
The HS30-H Nissan Fairlady 240ZG was released in Japan in October 1971 to homologate the 240Z for Group 4 racing. Differences between the 240ZG and an export market Datsun 240Z include an extended fiberglass ‘aero-dyna’ nose, wider over-fenders riveted to the body, a rear spoiler, acrylic glass headlight covers and fender mounted rear view mirrors. The 240ZG was available in three colours: Grande Prix Red, Grande Prix White and Grande Prix Maroon. The "G" in 240ZG stands for "Grande." Although the ZG was never sold outside Japan, in order for it to be eligible for competition in the US, Nissan sold the nose kit as a dealer's option which is known as the "G-nose".
So Van, when can we see pics of DEMONZ in the member's rides section?

if i had enough money i would buy a 240z 2 seater... pay a visit to the guy who built my 4AGE and get him to build me a 3.1l injected L28 for it... then save enough money for a stroker RB26... and some deepdish watanabes....

Nath, you're right, L6 with the OS Giken twin cam head. Very very rare + expensive.
O.S.GIKEN have had many requests over the years to reproduce these heads, but its not going to happen anytime soon. Most of the tooling and casting patterns were made from hardwood, which has warped and deteriorated over the years. Remaking everything would cost a fortune, and the heads themselves would also cost a fortune per-unit. I'm afraid there are very few people who would be willing to shell out for what they would cost............. we are talking many thousands of US Dollars each ( and I mean many.
I met the vice-President of O.S.GIKEN in Japan some years ago, and asked him all about it. Its clear that this is a project that they are not currently interested in reviving, and they have not got any unsold kits stashed under any workbenches anywhere either. They make some "O.S.Classic" parts for older cars ( piston kits, clutch kits etc ) but they don't have any plans to go any further than that.

Nath, you're right, L6 with the OS Giken twin cam head. Very very rare + expensive.
I always had a dream of going something like a OS Giken head on an L18 for my old 510, but as you say, rare and expensive. The closest compromise I could think of doing was FJ20 on twin 45s, but sold the car before I ever got around to doing it.
