View Full Version : Got any tattoos?

You folks got any tattoos? I recently got my first tattoo, about 3 months ago, I'm yearning for some more! The hard part is a) justifying the expense when there's so many other things I need to do with my money, and b) deciding on a design. As you can imagine, it's a big commitment, so you want to make sure you've got the right design.

Anyway, this is mine.

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o128/localmike/DSC00211.jpg

The part in red is the hanzi symbol (Chinese written language, the same symbol can be found in the Japanese Kanji written language, which Japan kindly jacked from China!) for "truth". My partner is half Chinese, and this is her Chinese name (though not her official given name). So, this is an attempt to represent my commitment to her and to our life together, while somewhat cirmcumventing the cursed name tattoo (the curse being that anyone who gets their partner's name tattooed on them inevitably ends up single again in the future)!

The black section is a hexagram from the ancient Chinese system called I Ching (the I is pronounced as an E). One of its interpretations is "After Completion", and it acts as a recognition of the trials and challenges I've faced, while also declaring that I am armed against future challenges. It stands for accomplishment, showing that I've achieved some of my most important goals and that I'm prepared to work to uphold them.

What about you yo?

that tat looks awesome van...looks very modern and has meaning!

i haven't got one yet but would like to get one...if i do i'm keen to get the penrose triangle on my right shoulder:

http://www.sightsavers.org.uk/images/f_1828optical-illusion-3.jpg

it reprsents 'impossibility in its purest form' but for me also meaning strength (the triangle being the strongest shape). i've always liked the design and relate to the impossible being achieved as ive been through some pretty trying times.

I made a tribal on my reight arm/shoulder. I am glad I made it hideable by a T-shirt. Otherwise I would have got problems getting the job I have now.

Back then I made it right after I got 18. Today I wouldnt do it again.
I wouldn't ever think about making a tatoo with a message or even a girlfriends name. Attitudes and girlfriends change. Would be hard to become a kindergarten-teacher with a scull on the arm or finding a new girlfriend who is named "Tina" too.

And you never know if the chinese letters mean what you think, or just "No. 45 without garlic and double rice".

"And you never know if the chinese letters mean what you think, or just "No. 45 without garlic and double rice"."

Yeah you do, it's called research. And as I said, there's little danger of worrying about the name factor, since at the end of the day it's just the symbol for "truth".

Sure, when you have a native asian girlfriend its easy. I know that. But I know too that my native asian girlfriend allways starts laughing when she sees someone with a nonsense japanese/chinese sentence on the arm or letters that look like from the first grade or even worse (i.e. mirrored).

Happens quite often here.

i still think that unless you have a clear understanding of a language then don't get it tatooed on your body. I have a few ideas, but they've all gotten a little boring after i've had them in my head for around a year so i've never pursued any of them. Always wanted to get the dragon badge off the old TA22 celicas tatooed on the back of my arm just above my elbow. one either side facing in towards eachother.

Tattoo's mark a time in my life for me. I only got them done when something super fucked up happened to me. I have a few. LOL.

Nice little collection there! I'm hoping to get a half-sleeve done in the not too distant future, just comes down to money and nailing down a design.

Ive always wanted a tat, been thinking about it for years but havent come across a design I liked.

Ive watched a few episodes of Miami ink and that has inspired me to finally get one... I was thinking of a jap themed Tat (possibly a Koi fish) but still undecided.

The Miami ink website has some pretty cool pics of their work thats worth checking out.

Miami Ink is such a great show, although it can be a bit annoying at times, listening to the rubbish stories some of the customers have. And Yoji - as much as I love the guy - is a shit artist and shouldn't be there.

Anyway, http://flickr.com is a great site to search for photos of tats! Thousands of amazing shots. http://bme.com is another good one too, though you can only see a certain amount before they block you and tell you to buy a membership haha.

I have always wanted a small tat.. somewhere that is not constantly visable. But i'm farqing scared it's going to hurt alot! Does it?

van
05-12-06, 02:12 PM
Yes and no. The first line they draw is the one that hurts the most, but then you - well, in my case - pretty much just grit your teeth and think "right, this ain't so bad", and by the time it's finished, you almost regret that it's over!

It's like a scraping on your skin. It's like they push down, and then drag it across your skin. That isn't literally how it works, but that's the feeling of it.

ok. That doesn't sound tooooo bad. lol. Expensive?

Hahah. Well my girlfriend's got one on her ribs, and that's one of the most painful places to get it. So if she can hack it, I'm sure you can. ;)

Cost varies. Mine was $180, and you can see the size of it. My guy charges around 90 an hour, which can be cheap or expensive depending on who you ask and where you are. Personally, I'm more interested in the guy's reputation than the price, and my guy has a top reputation.

No it doesnt hurt that much. You can easily stand it.

I was refused to enter a nice onsen in japan at holiday because of my tatoo:cry:

Yeah it wouldnt suprise me..

I have a friend who has massive dragon tatts all over his body, no way he would be able to go to Korea or Japan and enter a public sauna, bath or the hot springs as they would think he is a member of the Yakuza.

Speaking of chinese characters, a mate of mine was having some fun with his mates (all chinese and half chinese). They met this girl at bar and she had some chinese tatt on her abs and they played a cruel joke on her.

My friend went up to her and goes, "excuse me, but do you know what your tatt means ?"

girl: "Yeah it means truth and hope" etc...or something like that...hehe
friend: "Actually it means, Caution: Rude head"
girl: "No it doesnt, get out, I got this done at blah blah blah..."

My friend calls the other dude who is chinese "hey what does this say"
chinese friend: "Caution, Rude head"

By this time the girl was about to cry...and they let her in on the joke...

hahahaha cruel but soo funny...

I want a tat at some point, but im really waiting for something important significant to come to my mind before i get it done. Or something thats pointless, but people will still see it and say 'hey thats cool.'

My friend has alot of pointless tats, and i learned a lesson from him. He has a massive tattoo of Jesus on arm, and a massive tattoo of the Virgin Mary on the other arm. The detail in them is fantastic and its set out so if he puts his arms together, they are looking at each other.
But they have almost got him into a few fights, because he isnt religious and some people havent takin kindly to them haha.
The lesson is, get tattoos that look good and are possibly pointless, but make sure they dont offend other peoples beliefs haha.

Onto my tattoo, i really like Derek Hess's artwork. And his pictures would make fantastic tattoos, and ive seen some people with them and they looked amazing.

I was thinking about getting the heart one across my back. I just love the design.

and it doesn't just stop. after a while it continues until the art is finished. Mine took about 1hr i just went a little numb afer a while. It wasn't the pain that worried me. The sound of the needle......haunted me for months.
LOL

its not that bad really

Digging up an old thread because I didn't want to start a new one.

Anyone know of any good tattoo places/artists. If you suggest Tattoo Nation I'm going to plan an assassination as they are ones who did my tattoo, supposedly "fixed" it twice but actually didn't do any fixing...

Gah >:-(
