View Full Version : Initial D (movie) or Tokyo Drift?
I've just watched both of them this week and I can't decide which one I like more. At first liked intial D more, but am slowly swaying over to the side of Tokyo Drift?
Which one do you think is better?

I will the initial D movie better. Looks more real in terms of touge drifting.
there was some technique involved in the initial d movie, where characters at least stood around talking technical stuff, tyre wear, how to drift etc ... i mean you got a cool lil montage by bunta explain how takumi learned to drift.... there was less emphasis on skill by the end of tokyo drift that the race was just destruction derby
the cars in tokyo drift did not look good IMO, and there was better humour in initial d. and im sick of crime being related to car enthusiasts... in tokyo drift the loser points a gun at your head, in initial d the loser buys the winner a can of pepsi
initial d for sure, take away the special effects and fancy actors from tokyo drift and you have a bunch of ricers. initial d is also quite hillarious.
maby im just a jdm whore hehe
the first fast and furious is a different question tho.
Yeah, they're both pretty bad aren't they!
Still, $13 at JB HIFI = cheap entertainment.

There's very little CGI in Tokyo Drift. They did do some, especially in the last battle, but for the most part the reason their drifting is so much more spectacular is because they hired pro drivers / drifters to do it, and probably spent more money on each car than Initial D's guys did on the entire fleet.
And none of the actors in Tokyo Drift were that fancy. Who's the yokel? Bow Wow isn't exactly A-list Hollywood material. And the Aussie chick.....aside from Australia and the UK, who's heard of Neighbours?
Initial D had a pretty all star cast, but I still felt like it was a bit of a letdown. I loved Tokyo Drift, but I'm not stupid enough to say it's actually a good movie. I just loved the visual feast that it presented.

I like Initial D more. It looks more "japanese" then Tokyo Drift. Even if it was a hong kong movie.

There's little CGI alright, but it also have the most impossible storyline of all. Put a RB26 in a american car within 1 day or so. Learnt and beat the DK in drifting by a few wk or months time......

I'm not saying the storyline isn't stupid. But Initial D's isn't much better.
The yokel in Tokyo Drift is that little kid from American Gothic, and Xfiles.

If you're old enough you would've been sitting there watching it thinking, "I've seen that guy with the stupid accent before...except he was a kid with a stupid accent!"
Didn't they get Orido, and Taniguchi to be the stunt drivers in Initial D?
Reece Milllen did the drifting in Tokyo Drift. Apparently did the drifting up the curved ramp in one take too.

Initial D had an all-star cast for Hong Kong cinema (which isn't a put down) but given the international reach they're both about the same.
I remember reading that it was the kid from American Gothic - but he's still no Macualay Culkin or other A-list Hollywood child stars (not that I can think of too many now). That TV show wasn't as long lasting or as famous as others, either.
yep.. He was just a kid with a stupid accent... still is.
dude.. why make my car cry be enev comparing these two movies
with me, jay, chris... its like inital D everytime we go driving anyway

I prefered initial-d, tokyo drift had all those special effects and that, but initial d had a better story line and was put together better.

So THAT'S where I've seen Lucas Black from before! Thanks :D
I actually enjoyed Tokyo Drift, not because it's such an accurate film or anything but it as good fun and on a long haul flight to Seoul I watched it 2.5 times :) But the spiral ramp drifting bit is the only bit where I thought it looked a bit artificial...
Funnily enough Babs, the spiral ramp bit (from memory) was the one part in the film where the stunt drivers asked to be able to give it a shot instead of defaulting to a CGI solution.... The director gave them one chance, or something like that, to prove themselves, and well, I guess they did.
Most of the cars were purpose built to drift for particular scenes too. An interesting point made in the commentary was that at the last minute they wrote the 'love drive/mountain drift scene' into the script and as a result ended up turbocharging the chick's RX8 so it could look authentic, even though originally it was supposed to stay mechanically stock.
After hearing about how they set up the cars and then how they didn't want to use CGI I started to appreciate the film more than I had originally, and this was actually what was making me change my mind over Initial D...

Ha ha. Yes, Initial D does make you laugh doesn't it.
That scene for example, or when he wants to buy a GTR, is just down right hillarious! - The guy is actually a comedian, not an actor, which I guess is the reason why his character is so funny!

He is also the dude from "Friday Night Lights" and "Jeepers Creepers 2"
oh...and FF3 is crap. Initial D is cool.
as well as Rhys Millen, the mountain drifting scenes were performed by Kumakubo and Tanaka from Team Orange
