CF panels y0!
The R32 GT-R in dead stock form from the factory showroom is 1480kg's. That's a heavy mofo. The Group-A racing cars were 1200-1300kg's. The N1 version (only a few made) were the same as stock but without ABS, boot lining, stereo, rear wiper/motor + aircon to save weight (surely not too much).
I haven't bothered with saving weight as it's been so easy to add power but I have taken out some carpet/tar, rear wiper/motor, lighter seats but mostly I've added a whole lot of chassis stuff... full cage, bracing up top and under the car too.
After a weighbridge at Mascot (you pay $22 to get your car weighed) I got a figure of 1480kgs!
So spot on I've managed to keep the same weight as stock but have a gazillion mods on the car. I'm baffled as to how they get their cars down to 1200kg's though. I know I can save close to 100kg's if I took out:
completely remove hicas (rear wheel steering rack).
But that's a fair bit of commitment right there. Something I am thinking about in any case. SHame that when I put 6-pot AP's on the car my weight will go up again... 355mm pizza sized rotors have got to be heavy!!!
The main difference between race cars however is that they were usually 'white bodies', meaning that they are built from a chassis that hasn't been painted, and hasn't had tar and sealant put on.
Side intrusion bars are heavy as well, but I wouldn't be cutting that out on a road car
put some speed holes lol
cf panels will cost an arm and a leg man...... got for the freebie mods just strip the interior, things you dont need and take out aircon, power steering, abs, back seat, passenger seat, carpet, door trim, chop the dash, rip out the carpet, door trim, roof lining, spare tyre, jack, tools, stereo........... where's that tread whcih they strip the car to save weigh?
Also if you look at the Grp A GTRs there wasn't just things taken out, but also existing things like suspension uprights, etc made out of magnesium. Eg I have a ex-Grp A AP Racing brake caliper on my desk as a paperweight, and it's at least half the weight of a normal one. And the old race teams also did lots of illegal things to drop weight, like acid dip the bodyshells to make them thinner, etc.
Or you could go on a diet... No use stripping everything off your car if you are built like fat albert...
Then again... Justin doesnt look like he has much weight to lose (shaved head perhaps? Might knock off 110g or so there )
Is this what you were referring to Eggy?
Don't forget stuff like lexan instead of glass, and chances are their cages and bracing will be magnesium or other super-light materials. And, of course, you can get lightweight radiators / intercoolers etc to further reduce weight.
Personally, if I were you I'd retain the ABS. Its a worthwhile driver aid, and a lot of race drivers would retain it if they could (to allow them to trail brake with an extra margin of safety).
I think it was Sp33d did an interview with John Bowe, when he was driving for Prancing Horse Racing, and he loved the ABS in the F360 they were competing. They had to take it out for homologation, but while he had it it allowed him to brake deeper and turn in under brakes.
/\ yeh what he said
when you dump the ur engine oil at the waste management depot, they weight your car
The $22 weighing is a std thing that RTA-approved weighbridges do for purposes of engineering, compliance and rego (scrap metal sellers to it too). Basically you're paying for the certificate...
at least your wallet is lighter now J.F! Spend money... great weight reduction!!!
As Babs says you silly buggers. I had to do it for my engineers cert. You cheap asses.
And about ABS. I agree... that is if my ABS works at all, which it doesn't!!! I think ABS in R32 GT-R's is a load of rubbish. Have never felt mine ever and have locked up and, well, spun out a fair few times.
magnesium braces and cages ? is that new things ?
As far as i know Chromoly roll cages is the lightest affordable material for roll cages.
