DVD player with those USB port things

Ahoy there!

I'm not new on technology or anything so please don't flame me!

I bought this dvd player that allows you to plug in a usb/sd card.

I JUST realised after months of owning it, it can play mpeg4 or whatever. i dont know what that is but on my usb stick i have an episode of gossip girl and i shoved it on and TA DA! IT WORKED!

You might not understand but at this point in time my brain's going BEZERK with ideas now!

Seeing that I can shove a usb stick, can I buy a portable hard drive with usb attachment and watch movies/shows on there too!?

If so, TECHNOLOGY IS THE BESTS!!!!

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I pretty much watch all my divX movies off my iPod on my PS3.
