I think there seems to be a fine line between "Car enthusiast" and "Idiot" at the moment. I think a proper enthusiast is interested in cars/driving/racing and does not do stupid shit.

I'd like to know this too.

my mate recommended shannons as his missus drives an mx5 and got a good deal with them despite not being part of a car club or anything similar

When I called up, i got some bloke that asked me - "what car do you drive?"
    >me: "2000 honda civic"
    >shannons dude: "why are you calling us then?..."
    >me: felt so disrespected i hung up

By your logic, that's everyone lumped square in the idiots category.
Everyone who has any interest in cars at all has done "stupid shit" to some extent before, whether it be revving your car out in the first couple gears or a full-house brake job or street skids, doesn't matter. Anyone who says otherwise is lying out their arse.

Ive always thought a "car enthusiast" is someone who spends more time working on the car than actually driving it.

I think a large part of being an "enthusiast" is about respect. Respect the car, law and fellow drivers.

Many think they are "enthusiasts" but will be cutting skids and high speed runs on public roads. Also 100+DB system on a street car.. I dont agree with this.

    Just my opinion.

Anyway, I seem to have skipped around my definition of an enthusiast, so here goes.

People get so hung up on trying to shoehorn everyone into two or three different categories that they fail to realise that there are a million different subcategories of enthusiast out there, from the rich guy in his Murcielago that only gets driven to and from the track, to the kid in the $500 Corolla thrashing it about the twisties, to the bloke in the bone stock, immaculately kept base model 6cyl Commodore. It's the love that matters, love for your car no matter what it's problems. That, and the ability to appreciate the work that's gone into someone else's pride and joy, even if it's not to your taste.
Elitists can suck a fat wang, they'll be the death of the true car enthusiast.

From the above posts, I'll assume my opinion will just be seen as trolling.

    HEY thats me!! haha

Yeah I agree with what you say though, everyone is different. For example take music, you could play anything from a clarinet to the drums but regardless you are still a musician, similar thing in the car world.

(For clarity sake, smashing a guitar is not a musician, rather a musical hoon)
